Stopped into Sumo Sushi on a Saturday afternoon. Since I had my pup, my friend and I chose to sit outside. He had to go inside to let them know we were on the patio, which I understand, but it did add a little extra step to getting service started. Our server seemed a bit inexperienced. She didn't bring plates for our appetizers, and we also had to ask for utensils. Even after we mentioned the missing items, it took a while for them to arrive, and we were already halfway through our appetizers by the time we got plates. We ordered the steamed gyoza, shrimp tempura, and a teriyaki chicken meal that came with miso soup and a salad with ginger dressing. The gyoza came out quickly, followed by the shrimp tempura, and both were good. My friend enjoyed his teriyaki chicken with no complaints. The miso soup, however, was pretty bland, and the ginger dressing on the salad was a bit overpowering. If you're not a big ginger fan, I'd recommend asking for the dressing on the side. Overall, the food had some highlights, but the service could definitely use some improvement. read more

I was pleased when I discovered the Maki Combination I ordered came with Miso Soup and Ginger Salad. The former was kind of underwhelming, considering hot soup on a cool night is #goals. Miso Soup is generally plain, but this was just bland. Ginger Salad redeemed itself - the dressing was spot on! Onto the main event: All of our sushi plates were wonderfully presented. My tablemates enjoyed their specialty rolls more than I did. Maybe I ordered off the basic bae menu? They were all middle of the road in my opinion. Plus, I didn't receive any of the spicy goodness that was promised. I'm no sushi connoisseur by any means, but as far as my experience was concerned, it was just good. This is such a charming little place. I love it's location (funky, friendly Park & King district in Riverside) and it fits right in. The prices are comparable to other sushi places nearby. It's clean and smells delicious inside. My husband loves sushi but every time we go to a sushi place, he wants noodles for some weird reason. Well, we lucked out with Sumo Sushi because they have a nice selection of noodle dishes on the menu. He didn't know what to choose, so I chose the "Curry Pork Katsu Noodle Bowl" for him. Mmm, he loved it. The panko encrusted pork cutlet was melt in your mouth tender and the curry sauce with noodles and vegetables were delicious. I ordered three rolls (California, Jaguar and Rock & Roll) expecting to share but he only had a couple of pieces because he didn't want to stop eating those noodles. (It was a huge serving and he took 1/3 of it home.) My rolls were delicious and generous and no, there weren't any leftovers. The waitress surprised us with a complimentary dessert - two fried Oreos. It's always great to find a good sushi restaurant. My husband and I took my parents to Sumo one afternoon to give it a try. It was such a treat. We started with some hamachi sashimi appy. Then we ordered a couple of rolls to try. After complimenting the server on how good the rolls and the sashimi are, the server suggested we try a chef's special, live scallops prepared two-way. They came out pretty quickly with beautiful presentation. My bf went with the beef udon which was loaded with tender pieces of meat and tons of fresh veggies. The broth was simple yet so flavorful. Extra star after tonight's visit - we ordered six rolls off their special (formerly "red") menu - it's now part of their normal printed menu, so you don't have to know to ask. I appreciate that - you should offer all of the options to every guest, every time. However, although you can order online, you still can't order their special rolls from the website. The extra star was for the quality of the special rolls that I hadn't previously sampled. We had the sweetheart roll, and it was delicious. It came out in cute little hearts, and we thought it highlighted the tuna well. We also tried the honey roll, caterpillar roll, magic fire roll, fire dragon roll, and yummy roll. The yummy roll really did live up to its name! It was the "heaviest" of all the rolls we tried though, so we struggled to finish all of it. (Really big pieces, cream cheese, fried - not light and fresh at all. Still tasty though!) The magic fire roll used to come out on fire - they would put it all in foil and then light it on fire, but they stopped doing that, so it just comes out plated normally. Our favorites were the honey roll and the yummy roll, and our "least" favorite was the fire dragon roll (but really, nothing wrong with the roll, it just didn't stand out as much to us as the other ones did.) I'd recommend giving this place a try for some awesome specialty rolls - or giving it another try if you hadn't ever found the red menu! read more

Although there are a ton of sushi restaurant in Jacksonville, I try to look for ones with good recommendations, excellent service, reasonable prices, and quickness. This place fits all of these. The lady who served me didn't hesitate to get my order, a water, and my check in a timely manner. The sushi was superb and beautifully displayed on a wooden board with a banana leaf underneath the sushi rolls. Since I'm trying to eat healthy, I chose the salmon roll and California roll. Both were made perfectly and had plenty of flavor. They have special rolls too, so make sure you ask about those. I think a lot of people don't realize it is here, since it is near the busy Park Street intersection, so stop in and enjoy a quiet lunch or dinner. read more

As a sushi lover Sumo sushi is my own personal ol faithful of goodness. The rolls are always fresh and the lunch specials are super affordable! Personally my spice tolerance is way less than theirs so the spicy rolls get me right in the kisser every time! The service is very attentive and checks on me constantly, I like that for extra eel sauce. And just a heads up they do not take walk ins 30 min before they close, but you can get take out, so win some loose some. This has been the worst sushi place I have been too. Orders take 45 min or longer. The food there is terrible. Rice is very wet like soup. There noodles are some 5 foot long slimy uncooked spaghetti strings. There about 4 of those the rest is broccoli and other vegetables. There water taste like it came from the toilet and I'm not even going to dig into the sushi theme. It should be called SUMO SOUP because they don't know how to prepare sushi. I, too, have been to Sumo Sushi about 5-6 times over the past year and a half or so and I am actually glad I waited to write this review. I had heard a lot of hype about the place, but our first visit was, eh, so-so, with slower service and rolls that were good, but a bit on the smaller side for the price, but nothing to write home about. I was at a party and talking to a mutual friend about our experience here... and she told me... "That's because you have to ask for the red menu." Now, I am not 100% sure this isn't given out most of the time, but Sat. we were given the normal menu and then asked for the red. It is filled with all of the chef's special rolls that you don't want to miss out on! So the past 2 visits have been really, really good. Presentation is excellent and well executed and gorgeous.. (Man, I need to post these pics soon... I'll get there.) Not the best sushi in the entire world, but consistent, fresh and our service has always been on point. So, in two visits we have tried the Butterfly, Sumo, Caterpillar, Black Dragon, Fire Dragon and Lemon Fish rolls and they have all been fantastic. The Lemon Fish roll was spicy red snapper, cucumber, crab meat, tuna, salmon, yellow tail and lemon on top.... it had little crunchies in the middle and when dipped in the soy sauce, it was a wonderful mix of lemon, salt and crunch and reminded me a bit of fish and chips. Amazing! Perfect for a warm summer day and excellent with a Sapporo. Side note, we just got a new puppy so walked her up to Sumo and sat outside with her. What a great variety of sushi, sashimi and sáke here! I'm very happy I finally had the chance to check this'd place out. I love sushi but don't have it often, and everytime I do have it I say the same thing: I gotta eat more sushi! Haha Tonight trying their Cali, dragon and pink rose rolls. The red menu is where it's at if you are in the mood for something totally different and delicious. There are so many to try, I'm going to have to drag my beach friends here so we can crack down on this list haha. Very clean place with efficient service. The ladies are sweet and fun. After asking her what her favorite roll was (since I didn't know what basic rolls were any good) she handed me the specialty roll menu. I DIED FOR REAL! OMG! I started salivating as I read every roll. So besides being embarrassed and starving I now had to choose only a few rolls to share with my boyfriend and scarf down ASAP! Finding a good sushi restaurant in Jacksonville is a tough feat -- but I think I have found mine. Sumo Sushi makes me smile. Their spicy tuna hand roll is the perfect texture; I've tried numerous hand rolls at different restaurants from east to west coast and honestly -- Sumo's spicy tuna hand roll has my heart. I appreciate how small and intimate Sumo is. Though, their service is always just okay. The servers aren't rude, but they don't ever seem excited to see me like many other sushi restaurants. And quite frankly -- that's the only reason I haven't given Sumo Sushi a five star rating. I've sampled multiple items on their menu and loved almost all of them. We went back to Sumo yet again the other night and tried a couple of new rolls. The Magic Fire Roll (actually comes out on fire... scared me at first... lol...) was AMAZING as was our old standby The Manhattan and another new roll, The Lemon Fish, which we ended our meal with.... it was refreshing and satisfying with a nice kick of lemon. If you want a darn near perfect sushi meal, start with the Manhattan... then have the Magic Fire and end with the Lemon Fish. ;-) You will be very satisfied!
