This is our family's top destination for a fun, casual dinner out. Been coming every couple of months since it opened, but since we were just there for my mother-in-law's birthday, I figured it was time to drop a review. One of the first attractive features is how airy and light the dining rooms are -- there are plenty of outdoor tables (with heat lamps for winter, covers for rain), which was especially good during the pandemic. We're also big fans of the extra large booths that easily fit six. Of course, if we didn't love the food, we wouldn't keep coming back. There are other Tex-Mex options near by, but their food tends to be a bit heavier and less innovative. Surfside has a range of salads and bowls with chicken, shrimp, and fish that won't leave you overstuffed. I'm also a big fan of the fajitas, which are a bit heavier by nature, but delicious. My daughter's must have is the street corn smeared with cheese and spices. She's also a big fan of the (non-alcoholic) frozen drinks, which come in a cup shaped like a little man whose backside is showing, which the kids think is hilarious. (Sadly, she received a regular glass on our most recent visit.) I'll say that service is a bit hit or miss. Always friendly, sometimes great, but there are days when it seems hard to track anyone down for a refill for.your soft drink or some other minor request. Bottom line? Kids happy. Grandparents happy. This review is long over due. Surfside's new(ish) location was open and serving us with delicious to-go orders all through the shut down and now their patio seating is open! I've must have eaten here at least 7 times since March and I've never gotten anything I haven't absolutely loved! You can tell they use the best/high quality ingredients, and they have an open kitchen so you can see how clean they are. Lastly, get the steak fajitas!!! read more

Ive gone to the Surfside stand plenty of times in DC. The was my first time visiting the restaurant and it was a dope vibe. The tacos I indulged in were the Nevis, Cabo San Lucas, and Birria! Nevis: on point and immaculate as always! That mango salsa...speechless Birria: Between the cheesy meaty tacos and the consume, its like heaven to your taste buds! Cabo San Lucas: If you havent been to cabo, visit! Now for the tacos, the tacos were full of flavor, the only issue the steak was overcooked. Steak shouldve been cooked to medium. Had a very nice brunch here. I've eaten here many times. We ordered the huevos rancheros, edge Benedict minus the pork, and waffles. Everybody enjoyed their brunch. I did think that there was way too much cheese on the huevos rancheros so I won't get that again. Also had the tuna pokey appetizer, which I really like and I've had many times. The ambiance of this Surfside location is PRIMO. The indoor/outdoor feel truly makes you feel like you're near the beach somewhere far away-- and not on busy, traffic laden Wisconsin avenue. Strings of lights are hung up around the patio and the walls are covered in colorful decor. Such a unique spot in the middle of NW Washington DC! My friends and I enjoyed a bunch of dishes including the Negril tacos, the jerk chicken bowl and an appetizer of tortilla chips and guacamole. While the prices for some of the food items were a bit high, the cost is worth it for the fast and friendly service, the wonderful ambiance and the delicious offerings! The drink menu offered many local and popular beers and a slew of fun sounding cocktails! Would recommend this spot for a group dinner, an enjoyable happy hour or even a first date. As we live less than 100 feet away, Surfside was our go to place to eat . Alone or with friends. We have been there well over 10 times. I get that Covid affects business and good service is harder to find. This said a few weeks ago ordered my usually plate along with a beer. The food came but I had to ask 3 times for the beer that came well after I finished my meal ( and was warm). Not even a sorry . Today we had lunch on the patio. Ordered my usual taco and a beer. Unfortunately there were wasps ( absolutely not surfsides fault ), and while swapping 2 wasps I inadvertently knocked the beer and my kids coke to the ground. While the staff did mop the table nobody came to ask if I wanted to order another beer ( I would have paid as my mistake!) or ask my kid for coke refill. Then something caught my eye : the bus boys while cleaning off other tables used the water pitcher ( with water ) to dump trash off the table . I know that normally the pitchers are supposed to be cleaned each use , in theory but still ... Sadly in spite of a perfect location for us we will try something else. read more

I've always liked this place, both for the vibe and the food. I hadn't been in years for some reason. We ordered through doordash. The aruba salad was good enough, although the lime caesar needed a lot more lime! My daughter's birria tacos were awesome. I had high hopes for the queso, it tasted good but had an odd chalky texture. The prices are really out of control, but so are the prices everywhere these days! The nachos are delicious and massive ! Drinks are watered down and pretty expensive, so I would ask for less ice or maybe a shot on the side. Tacos are ok, not "authentic" but cool flavors. Regardless I would definitely go back. read more

We are big fans of Surfside. We generally stop by the Dupont location for Surfside but this location is closer home so doing takeout works better for us from here. Calling in for takeout was easy and we were able to place our order within a few minutes. The order was ready for pickup within 15 minutes, which was great since we were there a few minutes before the 15 minute mark and were able to pickup our order right away. We ordered our Surfside favorites - Nevis, Cabo San Lucas, and Punta Cana. Nevis - good combination of shrimp and mango - the mango provides a good compliment to add on hot sauce! Punta Cana - the chicken is fried perfectly - not too much oil and works best with the other ingredients Cabo San Lucas - the pepper provides a nice kick to the taco and the steak is cooked well! This was a good experience with Surfside and the food was up to our expectations! read more

Yeah!! this is good.... I ordered the Nevis taco (shrimp, pineapple salsa, avocado), side of braised beans, side of cilantro white rice, and gaucomole (8oz). And EVERYTHANG was delicious and flavorful! Came here for lunch last Saturday! I'm so glad they opened! I ordered the Negril tacos (2 tacos). My boyfriend ordered the Martinique burrito bowl. The food was served fairly quickly. We used to love this place, but after a recent birthday celebration here I'm writing a one star review. My husband wanted to gather about 15 friends for dinner on the patio for a random wednesday birthday celebration. So we brought a crew of people and a cake to celebrate the occasion. We spent over $600 on food and drinks, yet they charged us extra for bringing our own cake. I didn't notice this on the bill when I paid, so I waited a day to email the manager and asked for a refund on the cake charge (because that seemed obscene). No reply back to my email. The service was also pretty sub par, but I wanted to give them some slack given covid and hiring shortages. I'm more upset about the unnecessary cake charge on a very large bill and that I didn't get an email back. They also charge extra for chips and salsa when it would be nice if it came standard with the meal. read more

The service at your takeout window is going downhill. First and the biggest problem is that your phone is broken. FIX IT so that your staff can take orders. The online app is not functional enough to manage substitutions on orders, so if you want people to order there, make that work better. Last night, on a Wednesday at 8:30pm, I called for 20 minutes and no one picked up. I finally walked over there to order, there was no wait and people were just sitting around and was told the phone works fine. It most certainly does not. I ordered, waited 20mins for food, and then went to leave only to find they hadn't put everything in the bag. I live a half mile from the place and got him at 10pm. 90mins to order and get my take out home. If you don't fix these issues ASAP, I'll be taking my business to Taco Bamba when it opens. For what you charge for food, you should be rolling out the red carpet for guests. read more

There is nothing about Surfside that I don't enjoy. I'm also fascinated how the owner knew to leave their smaller indoor location to a new place perfectly suited for COVID-era. Amazing timing. Great Mexican food. Excellent drinks. It's family friendly, and has the safest, cleanest COVID-era patio seating I've seen anywhere. I am here ordering the Mackinac weekly, which almost no one pronounces correctly, but is a delicious breakfast burrito. Thumbs up! read more

Highly recommend Surfside on Wisconsin Avenue, NW in DC. Near Tenleytown. Great food, delicious cocktails, and superior service. Clean, casual atmosphere. You feel like you're at the beach. Best tacos in DC! Fun place to hang with friends or to bring the family. Great location, ample surface parking and a nice, covered outdoor patio too. For appetizers, I recommend the shrimp spring rolls (Asian/Thai flavor), and the tuna poke (just like in Hawaii). Both were fabulous. The best taco dish was the "Birria" with fork-tender beef brisket and a pan fried corn shell, followed closely by the "Rio" taco with succulent al pastor pork shoulder, pineapple, and avocado. Both tacos were off the hook! Orange Crush and Soggy Dollar were among the best cocktails I've have in DC. You gotta try them Wow! Finally, the service was first class. Ask for Caroline. After a couple of great takeouts last month, we decided to eat @ Surfside on Monday night. I felt as if I was eating food from a completely different restaurant. I ordered one of the chicken quesadilla entrees. It was o filled with gloppy spicy sauce. My friend ordered an appetizer where the dipping sauce did not match the description on the menu and not in a good way. More alarming was the service. My friend ordered a Coke and then watched the server stand at the bar chatting with one of the bartenders instead of bringing the drink. We had to remind her about the drink order. When the bill arrived, we noted the total. Yet when the credit card charge arrived, it was $20.00 more than the initial slip. My friend mentioned the difference and brought it to the manager's attention. We found out she had not included our dessert order in what we perceived to be the total bill. While the manager made it right, we were uncomfortable about Surfside's credit card practices and how their servers are trained. I could be wrong, but I felt there was a whiff of ageism in the way were served, Bottom line: check your bill carefully before you sign your charge slip. read more

The decor is gorgeous and the vibe is fun. The food just leaves me underwhelmed. It's suffered since the move from Glover Park. The "queso" in the overpriced three dip trio is like unflavored mayo, and the Mexican food (and all the food) at Millie's is better...which makes no sense, since same owners and Surfside is the one focused on tacos and burritos and Pacific meets Caribbean. The dishes are under seasoned, don't come together, need more sabor. I can't think of one thing I crave in between visits. Still, glad it's in the neighborhood, easy place to meet friends, easy for a casual dinner or happy hour, and the basic chips and salsa and drinks are decent. Love the spicy margarita! We got ceviche which it was just ok. Corn was good. It was my favorite. Nachos just a pile of chips with a bunch of ingredients on top. Anyone can make that at home. Margs not very strong. 1star service. Very very slow. It took forever to get a beer. She even forgot a few orders. I love coming here as they have some of the best quesadillas I have ever had! Whenever you visit, really consider trying out their St. Croix quesadilla as it is packed with delicious shrimp and grilled zucchini. The homemade ranch that comes on the side is to die for! The chips and guacamole are the perfect way to start the meal as the homemade guacamole is incredible and pairs perfectly with the quesadilla if you have it on the side. Have been eating in (or rather out, on their spacious patio) at Surfside for the last few months so this time decided to try a takeout for a change. This is a restaurant set up nicely for this service - takeout stand is separate from the restaurant. You can place orders there or order online directly from the restaurant for pickup only (have to sign up for an account first which is a bit inconvenient). Also on the pickup page you don't get to see pictures of the food whereas you do on the delivery page. Another thing is the pickup page has Apple Pay as the default payment and doesn't automatically show you an option for credit card payment so that's a bit tricky. Anyway we got our favorites - fish and steak tacos (there is an option for adding 1 additional taco per order for $4.45 which was nice), and flans (they make the best creamy flans!). Order was ready at the appointed time and pickup was a breeze. So glad to have this restaurant in the neighborhood! read more
