I came here for a quick dinner today and wow, what a find! The restaurant immediately reminded me of a taco place in Miami I loved, which already set the right tone. The hostess was very sweet and I got to take advantage of the nice weather and sit outside. It's taco Tuesday, so the hostess and the server both reminded me it was "buy one get one free" - a great deal! I decided to go big and try four tacos, and all of them were very good! I'm from Southern California, so usually am picky about tacos, and some of these really exceeded my expectation. Al pastor: very tender and flavorful. A teeny bit dry, but perfect with the red salsa they brought for the table. Beef birria: nice and crispy tortilla, the consommé was very fragrant and not too salty, and they were generous with the beef. As normal with birria, it's a bit heavier/oilier, so one was enough, but it's very good! Baja fish: probably one of the favs! I made the mistake of leaving it to last, so the outside of the fish was a little less crispy, but if you eat it sooner, that shouldn't be an issue. The piece of fish was very large and cooked perfectly (very flaky). The flavor was great, especially with that red salsa. Avocado tostada: generous toppings, great flavor balance, fun crunch with very soft toppings. If you've ever eaten a tostada, you know you have to approach it like I imagine people approach skittish horses: with total confidence, even if you know it'll end up as a mess on the place. Otherwise, service was very quick and friendly and they didn't come and bother me during the meal, which I love. It really filled up while I was eating, such a testament to how good this place is. Stopped by Tacombi on a Sunday to use a $25 gift card. One of the servers was very kind, took the time to walk me through the menu and invited me to sit wherever I wanted. He suggested to visit on Tuesdays for BOGO tacos. I ordered a mango margarita ($14), which was just okay, along with the Baja crispy fish taco ($6.99) and the Sinaloa shrimp taco ($6.49). A decent place for a breakfast burrita among several options in Bethesda. The two choices for the inside of the burrito are al pastor or vegetarian (a la Mexicana). I got the roast pork and you get plenty of chunks of meat throughout. Besides the meat, my favorite part honestly was the tortilla. It held up the contents of the burrita well! What could really help would be more meat options or offering some sauces on the side, especially for $14.99. It might not look big from the pictures, but the burrita was enough of a lunch for me. The construction partially blocks the view of the entrance from the rest of Bethesda Row, but I still see people finding it! It's a big spacious dining room inside, even if you close off the part of the area meant to host parties. The Tacombi decor actually does a really good job of transporting you somewhere else, in my view for a fast casual restaurant. Tacombi off Bleeker Street in NYC was a my go-to spot circa 2017. Fast forward now being in the DMV and seeing this spot pop up on my map on a Sunny Saturday - can you say EXCITEMENT!?! Visited the location @ Crystal City and it did NOT disappoint. The Vegana taco and Baja Fish taco didn't stand a chance - also you can tell since the Vegana never made the photoshoot . Spices were spicing, everything came out fresh, and the locale was super nostalgic. I love how every location is kept with integrity in design and aesthetic. It was pretty packed when we got there so the wait time was a bit elongated, but a super attentive waiter who bussed the outdoor seating made it their business to take our order and ensure everything was exactly what we needed. Truly, I can't believe I have to write this. The quality of Tacombi has dropped severely. I don't know if it's the Bethesda location or in general. I went last week and was so so disappointed. The carne asada was DRIPPING in oil, it was bizarre. I couldn't finish either of my quesadillas (and as a fat woman, let me tell you that is rare). I didn't even manage to get a picture of the shrimp taco I ordered before devouring it because it was so good. The Al pastor was also delicious. As a Mexicana from California, I have high standards for Mexican food, especially in the DMV. But Tacombi truly blew me away. I knew it was going to be delicious as soon as I saw the house made tortillas. Came by for a small bite. Was alright but not that impressed. I got the birria, shrimp tacos and mezcal mule. Birria and shrimp were good but nothing extraordinary. I enjoyed the slaw on the shrimp taco though. Mule was very strong. My friend got the califa de Leon. It didn't look like much. He said they were alright, but wouldn't say it's worth the price. Tacombi Bethesda is delightful little gem specializing in its namesake dish. With bright and cheerful ambiance plus courteous and welcoming service, Tacombi is fun getaway from the bustle of Downtown Bethesda for quality tacos--particularly on Tuesdays when the least expensive half of tacos ordered are free! Having tried nearly all of their tacos and one of the two from the *Taquería El Califa de León pop-up, me and my dining companion's favorites are clearly the Tacombi's Birria and Sinaloa Shrimp. The Birria is quality braised brisket that is flavorful, rich, and gooey with cheese and accompanied by a decadent consommé made of beef oil and the same spiced braising juices as used for the beef. The gratis salsas (a mild and smoky red plus a chili-loaded green), particularly the spicier green one, work as refreshing contrast to the rich taco. The Yin to the Birria's Yang is the Shrimp+Avocado Taco, which is bright and refreshing with nice tang from the pickled onion and elevated further by a spicy and creamy green sauce. Terrific on its own, either complementary salsa also adds another accent to the party of flavors. For those wanting something milder while still on the Yin side of things, either the Baja Crispy Cod or Seared Cod Tacos are delicately flavored and enjoyable. *Speaking of the aforementioned pop-up collaboration with the Michelin 1-Starred taco stand from Mexico City, the Costilla taco (ribeye) was well-marinated and fine. Since it was literally just sliced meat in a corn tortilla, the concept appeared to about perfect execution of simplicity. However, the Costilla taco did not come anywhere close, was not particularly well-seared, and felt doubly disappointing as it was over twice the cost of Tacombi's priciest taco. Good, but not amazing taco place in downtown Bethesda that reminds me of some of Los Tacos No. 1 in NYC, but not quite as good. The place is bright and spartan inside which gives it a bit of an authentic feel and the tacos, menu and ingredients definitely have the bare bones taqueria feel as well. It took a long time to get our order taken and get our food. For a good long while, it just seemed like they had forgotten about us and we couldn't get anyone's attention. When the food came, the shrimp taco was fantastic. The (non-fried) fish taco wasn't as good. The special ribeye taco was good with the toppings, but my son and his friend didn't seem to like it (despite liking steak), although they had it without the toppings. All my daughter ate was the rice and a tiny bit of beans. My kids' pickiness probably isn't a slight against the place though. read more

I haven't dined in at Tacombi yet, but I've ordered carry out from them several times. I have always received excellent service: while I wait for my order I'm always offered a place to sit and some water - even if I'll only be there for a minute or two - and my order comes up hot & fresh quickly. My go-to order is a chicken quesadilla, which comes with a side of salsa of your choosing. You can also get some of their Truff carry-out packets, and I highly recommend the green truffle hot sauce to take your quesadilla to the next level. I decided to give Tacombi a try, as I'd never eaten there before. Initially I came here for the pop up event which was Califa De Leon (Michelin Star Taqueria) from Mexico City, but was told the event won't start till 5pm. Being from California and having explored many of the popular taco spots in Southern California and Mexico, I consider myself a bit of a taco connoisseur. The interior of the restaurant was very nicely set up, and was very spacious. I tried a variety of items--some were fantastic, and others weren't bad but didn't quite match up to places I've been before. Starting with my least favorite, the Al Pastor taco didn't have enough flavor for me. It wasn't bad, just not memorable. The Birria taco was decent, but honestly, in the DMV area, no one compares to Nono's Taqueria--they've mastered Birria tacos, and no one can see them period. The Esquites (corn) were definitely among the best I've had. My favorites, however, were the Baja Crispy Fish, Carne Asada, and Sinaloa Shrimp tacos. Their corn tortillas were excellent, and the Agua de Sandía (watermelon drink) was absolutely amazing. One big surprise was their hot sauces--all three were incredible. Most taquerias in the DMV area usually have just one good or decent hot sauce, but Tacombi nailed it with all three. Went here for the first time and it was a mixed bag. Service started out fine and the food trickled out pretty quickly. We tried various items to mixed reviews. As others mentioned, it is pricey for the portion, especially compared to other excellent taquerias around. The beans and rice, corn esquites and tostada were pretty good but very small for the price ($5 each)! I really like the Baja fried fish taco but the seared fish taco wasn't good at all which was disappointing since those are usually my favorite kind. My husband enjoyed his sweet potato and black beans tostada, but I didn't like the overpowering sauce on it. Now for service...our waiter disappeared and my husband had to wave down a different one who very apologetic. He brought my husband the extra taco he ordered and gave it to us on the house. Then we waited again to get the check and had to ask the other waiter again to bring it. The restaurant wasn't even busy! He brought us the check and then lo and behold, our waiter showed up to ask us how things are going! We told him we couldn't find him and had to order with and get the bill from another waiter and he just shrugged and walked away!! Never had that kind of bad service, no apologies, just attitude. We would've told the manager but at this point just wanted to leave. We tipped the other waiter on the way out. Based on the food and service, we won't be back. This is literally a hidden gem. There is a lot of construction so you have to look for it. My spicy marg was perfection. Well balanced spicy and a tajin rim Geo the manager was beyond attentive and brought us over a free appetizer that he insisted we HAD to try- corn esquites. He was right, this was DELICIOUS and the right balance of sweet from the corn, creamy from a little cheese and spicy from the sauce. YUM!!! And I would make sure to order this again. We walked in on a Friday night for a table of 5 and were seated within a few minutes. The ordering process was fairly easy as you were given paper menus and you marked off what you wanted. The fish has absolutely no seasoning and is extremely bland. The rice is mushy, bland, and has a bitter aftertaste. Beans weren't much better. A can of beans from the grocery store taste better.
