If you're ever near Motor City Drive in Bethesda and have an empty stomach and are in the mood for good eats, go behind the Home Depot, beside the Five Guys. There is the Plaza Azteca Restaurant. The food is excellent. It's fresh, hot, and flavorful. They give you healthy portions too. I don't go there often because I consider the place a special treat. When I do, I'm never disappointed. The people who work there are very friendly and welcoming. The prices are appropriate for the portions they give you. I do takeout majority of the time; however if you want to sit down and eat it's beautiful inside. Definitely a hidden gem. read more

Went for a late lunch. Place was empty. Service was very good.Chicken taquitos were fresh and tasty. For lunch, I ordered the Bistec encebollado with white rice and black beans . The meat was very tough. My husband got the Plato típico, scrambled eggs with chorizo, white rice and pink beans. That was very tasty. Dessert was Tres leches cake and Sopapillas. Both were good. Freshly made . I like to go when there are not a lot of people, but the service is always good. There is low noise level and decoration is typical of a mexican restaurant. We had some friend's visiting with us and we took them to dinner here. There were 8 of us in total (4 adults and 4 kids). I had gotten takeout from here in the past but this is the first time that I had ever dined in. Our waiter and the staff were great and very attentive. I had the Chimichanga and my wife had the seafood soup and both were really good. The kids had a combination of taquitos and burritos. Also the kids' meals came with ice cream!! I'm a huge Plaza Azteca fan and absolutely came here for the name. My husband and I decided to take a day trip from Baltimore just for Plaza Azteca! Sadly this is very different from the ones we have been to in other areas. The menu is kind of weird and had more Latin inspired menu items. When I go to Plaza Azteca there are normally more Mexican food options but not here. The queso fundido was very disappointing and just an odd dish. The bathroom was very dirty and unkept. The service was friendly however it took a while to get what we needed. The margaritas were excellent but would have liked more but was hard to order in a timely fashion. The steak in the burrito was tasty but over all the burrito was boring. If you're looking for Plaza Azteca - this isn't it but still a decent meal. read more

The restaurant was dark so we thought it wasn't open. There was no ambience. It seemed unlike most Mexican restaurants that provide a cheery air. This was kind of dull. The service was okay, but not especially warm, the food extremely mediocre - while the portion size was good and they had all the basics, it was very bland. We had to request hot sauce as there was none provided with the meal. The habanero sauce, when provided, made all the difference. We had gone at the suggestion of neighbors, but won't be returning. This place is the fanciest looking Mexican restaurant, so I had high hopes! The bathroom was really clean and didn't have any smell, so that's a win! The staff weren't very friendly, but they weren't mean, more like they seemed indifferent. I order a shredded chicken taco with Mexican rice and beans. Chicken tenders and Mexican rice for my kids, and my husband got 3 grilled chicken tacos either Mexican rice and beans and added cilantro and onions to the tacos. I felt like the food was subpar except for beans, they were really good. The salsa was definitely not my family's style as it was watery and not very flavorful to us. The shredded chicken taco was very flavor either. The grilled chicken was decent but nothing to write home about. Overall, we definitely wouldn't go back, but glad we tried it. read more

Overall, I thought this was an ok Plaza Azteca. However, I was assuming that this Plaza Azteca would be like the locations in southeastern VA. Primarily, I was expecting the "white sauce" for our tortilla chips, but I guess the white sauce is not a thing in these parts. I thought the service was very good, and I have no complaints regarding the service. Unfortunately, I thought the prices were a bit high for the food because many of the plates were $30+. Perhaps, I was still used to the prices from the other Plaza Aztecas (typically the many of the plates were in $20 range) that I have visited in the past. Although the prices were a little higher than I expected, I thought the food was pretty good. However, I would not go out of my way (+15 minute drive) to visit this establishment. Since the restaurant is located in a somewhat busy shopping center, this could be a great place to have a margarita or three after shopping. read more

6 of us dined at this perfectly acceptable Tex-Mex on a busy Saturday night. It was pretty noisy, so I'd advise going early in order to converse if you have more than 4 in your party. We all really enjoyed our dinners. My 2 soft chicken tacos came with a small side salad and salsa. I also ordered a side of steamed broccoli which I could hardly cut. Not convinced this is THE "Plaza Azteca". They're just piggybacking off the name. Our server was sweet and super attentive, but the food was disappointing and the ambience is that "hole in the wall"-type joint. 15 bucks for an enchilada stuffed with canned chicken is theft. The tortilla was dripping wet and falling apart because of the water from the canned chicken. Was not good. The steak in my boyfriend's burrito was great though! My first visit, went with 10 other co-workers for a lunch gathering. We were the first customers at around 11:30 AM on a Tuesday. Got seated promptly and service was fine, for the most part. I ordered a Diet Coke, along with the Pollo Asado, without beans and extra rice. Food tasted alright. The Chips were stale, salsa was OK. Liked the hot sauce... A co-worker of mine had ordered Enchiladas Vegetables without Mushrooms, but when he received the food, it had mushrooms in it. The waiter said the veggies were already mixed in, so they couldn't just remove the mushrooms. Had he known that ahead of time, he may have ordered something else since he is allergic to Mushrooms. In any case, they replaced that with plain Cheese Enchiladas, along with sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo. He preferred to have the initial dish, but since it had mushrooms, he wasn't able to eat it, unfortunately... One of the waiters kind of spilled a refill of Diet Coke onto the table and to my pants, but it wasn't a bid deal. The refill of waters were in a very timely manner, so that was good. Another member of our Team had gotten the Lime Margarita, but it didn't taste that good. He said it was OK, just not as tasty as other Mexican restaurants. My food was alright, was mixing some flavor, though. Had to add a lot of hot sauce to make it more tasty. The chicken and rice were good, just too much onions, though. Couldn't finish it. We also ordered some dessert and had a Birthday celebration for one of our co-workers, which was nice. Tres Leches was simply OK, but not as good as Guapos or Gringos and Mariachis. I got the fajitas. I was shopping in the area and so I decided to stop by I'm not really sure what attracted me to this place but I think it was mostly out of convenience to the store I was at. The platter that I got was very sparse of meat. And nothing was particularly tasty except... The table chips that were brought to the table! Oh my God those were excellent I like them so much that I took a takeout container just to bring that back and left the food behind. service is great The waitress was very nice and brought me extra hot sauce. Ambience was sparse due to the Corona virus restrictions the bathroom was clean. I really liked their crispy tacos with "shredded" beef. I wish I had had more of them, and more time to savor them. The beef was not shredded when I got it, but it was totally fine with me because I enjoyed the large pieces of juicy, tender, delicious meat. They came with sour cream on the side and were surrounded by lettuce and pico de gallo (I think?). The whole time thing was just delicious. I also got maduros with sour cream on the side as my appetizer. I've never had maduros with sour cream. It was interesting. They were made perfectly. Customer service was quick, friendly, and helpful with the menu. I was on a time crunch and wanted to eat something quickly before going to my music classes, and the waiter that attended my table promptly guided me through the menu. He got the food out to me quicker than he promised so I was thrilled about that. Then again, I was the only customer at the time. Nevertheless, I liked the service here. The inside of the restaurant was very clean. All the tables had tablecloths and napkins folded up, and their glass cups are fancier than the ones in other Tex-Mex restaurants. Look, I'm not a fan of Mexican food. It's actually difficult for me to get excited about Mexican food unless there's chile relleno involved. So giving this place 5 stars is a big deal for me lol. This is my parents favorite Mexican restaurant and we dine here whenever we are visiting them. I cannot say enough great things about this restaurant. The staff is so kind, they go out of their way to make sure your experience is perfect. The food is so good, everything I have ordered has been full of flavor and perfectly cooked. Randomly decided to try this restaurant after a day of errands and happy I stopped here. As someone who predominantly eats vegetarian and is dairy free, finding good food is not always easy. Use to go there with my wife when they first opened and they just lost the energy in the cleanliness and the positive attitude that they had when they first opened. The carpet is dirty when you first walk in it smells like an old bar mat with sour mix in it, when you order your food, the cheese is rarely melted, and the plates can be cold. One time I complained about it, and the other owner came over, looked at my food and shook his head and walked off. He was mad I complained. I'll add something else about the owner and that is he speaks to his employees very condescendingly. He doesn't do it when he doesn't think anybody knows Spanish around. read more

This is definitely our favorite Tex/Mex restaurant. The food is great and the employees friendly. On our latest visit I am on a low carb diet, which restricted my options. We both had the Sopa de Pollo and they were kind enough to not add tortilla chips. I had my favorite - the Ranchero Platter - which is always delicious I couldn't have the rice but they substituted salad for it with no problem. My wife had a chicken tamale, black beans and Mexican rice, which was also delicious. And their Margaritas are to die for. I could drink them all night! This restaurant is off the beaten path, sandwiched in a small strip mall behind Home Depot in Bethesda. But parking is free and easy and it' well worth going out of your way to go there. read more

Chicken fajitas and chicken taquitoes ... yummmyy Food was Seasoned just right, chicken tender & juicy, beans were magnificent and the portions were great. I was able to create 3 fajitas with enough left to create a few more for lunch tomorrow. Definitely worth the price!! The only thing I'd say was lacking was the guacamole that comes with fixings ... i can't really say it was good or not bc it was really just a spoonful. So, I'll start off by saying that I'm not from the area.. I was craving some Mexican and saw there was a Plaza Azteca (a rather reputable chain of Mexican restaurants), so I decided to stop in. Now, I should have known something was off when I walked in and saw white tablecloths and fine-dining attire (although poorly decorated and boxes everywhere) in the restaurant.. I should have also been alarmed when the restaurant was very empty at a peak dining time. But, I decided to sit down since I was starving- To make a long story short, in no world am I willing to pay 25.00-50.00 for basic Mexican cuisine- and I walked out. It's a good little Tex-Mex joint in Bethesda, though a bit high priced for what it actually is. As a recent transplant from Texas I have to rate tex-mex places with a pretty high bar. Plaza Azteca has a solid menu with plenty of variety, including all your expected tex-mex staples: fajitas, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, etc. I really didn't enjoy the salsa very much, which is like a pizzeria not being able to do a pepperoni pizza. Service was prompt but honestly not very hospitable. I think they could be a bit nicer to the customers and explain things without feeling frustrated if the customer has a question. Overall it's definitely a good spot to go to for Tex-Mex if you happen to be right near the Home Depot and want some lunch. Otherwise if you're just in Bethesda I'd maybe go down the street to another spot. read more

If you have a gift card, I wouldn't recommend using it at this location. We ordered our food and when it came time to pay. We gave our gift card and it was declined twice. We went on the website and showed the waitress there was a balance but she insisted it was declined through Mastercard. We explained that it was a gift card, she kept asking for another form of payment. We tried to explain again that it was a gift card. She said she couldn't check the balance. We showed her again that there was a balance but she ignored us and kept asking for another form of payment. She was not helpful with resolving our problem. If I could give no star review, I would.
