Thanks to Yelp, I found a local gem. The Mexican restaurant offered truly delicious food, warm service, at a reasonable price! It was quiet when we got there, but soon were packed with customers. Nevertheless we got efficient service, and friendly vibes! We loved Al Pastor marinated pork taco, Suadero braised beef taco, and especially Lengua cow tongue taco! Tasajo platter is a nice combo. summary: a smallish taqueria located on the corner of Montgomery County, it thoroughly impressed with not just the food, but the "little things" along the way. Dining with kids can be challenging, so it's always nice when restaurants and staff are accommodating. The staff at Sabor Mixteca went above and beyond that. They were super fast with their service, but also showed warmth and kindness the entire time that made the meal delightful. The decor in the restaurant is vibrant and fun. They also had a clean, well-kept bathroom. The food was great. Everything came out in a timely manner and was excellently flavored and balanced. You could tell that this wasn't just like your run-of-the-mill taco joint. The flavors had a depth (especially the guisado) that brought things up a notch. But, like I was saying - although the food was great and memorable, I was really appreciative of how awesome the staff was and would love visiting again if we're in the area. Overall: small Mexican spot with welcoming and kind service, good food, fair prices, bright and fun decor, has a single stall inclusive restroom, a baby changing table, and high chairs I felt super welcomed by the employees here. They were all sweet, kind, and happy to help. The kids got cute kids cups with silly straws. Chips and salsa were not included. The chips and salsa were the only things we weren't impressed with. Everything else was delicious. My shrimp tacos were full and had great flavor. They fell apart while eating them, maybe if they had less sauce or the tortilla was grilled a little more it would have held up but they were so good I didn't even mind it. This is a very good Mexican restaurant. Our tacos had a rich flavor and came with 3 sauce choices for added heat. I thought there was enough heat without them. Then we had wonderful shrimp in a butter garlic sauce. Cooked to perfection then came with a hot dipping sauce that enhanced them. Toasted bread slices were good for dunking into the added sauce. Eating at Sabor Mixteco is like a warm hug. The food is superb, but the ambiance of Sabor Mixteco is warm, welcoming, and fun. The bright beautiful colors and decor are attractive. But, the personal service from the owners and chef makes this a memorable experience and you become part of the Oaxaca community. You are seated and greeted warmly by chef Juan Carlos, who gives you a lesson on the various sauces sitting on your table. His personal recommendations on food and drink are excellent. We started out with the red sangria. The sangria is a full bodied red wine with warm spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg You can taste a little bit of triple sec that adds to the flavor and fresh fruit. It tastes amazing. Then, for an appetizer, we had the guacamole and freshly made tortilla chips. The guacamole was really fresh and flavorful. We really enjoyed it! But, give me a drumroll please...the star of the show and the most popular dish on the menu is their house made, slow cooked and roasted mole. The ingredients in the mole include: raisins, cinnamon, almonds, chocolate, and dried guajillo and ancho peppers. It is thick, rich, and delicious. The sauce is served over perfectly cooked chicken and accompanied by rice and beans. Truthfully, this is the best mole I have ever eaten. It is irresistible! Chef Solano you have outdone yourself! It is truly amazing. We shared two of Sabor Mixteco's most popular desserts, the tres leches cake and the flan with Carmel sauce. The tres leches cake was freshly made in house. The rich, soft, buttery flavor made this cake taste phenomenal. Then, the flan with caramel sauce, also made freshly in house was cool, creamy, and tasty. It was fantastic! We loved Sabor Mixteco. I honestly enjoyed my meal here, but it wasn't anything crazy which is what brings the score down unfortunately. I got the flautas de pollo with all 3 items of the meal being good especially the sauce. I'm not personally a big fan of the beans being mushed like this instead of having actual beans. The service was great, with my server checking in often and having a warm presence. The ambiance of the restaurant is one of the things that truly stands out. This was my first time here very randomly just for drinks following a memorial service. They have Mezcalitas on the menu so I was sold. The service we had was excellent from when we came in until we left. The staff was friendly and checked on us repeatedly and appropriately even though at first we only ordered drinks and were seated in their outside seating. A staff member lead us in a little impromptu mezcal tasting and education which we both enjoyed. Eventually we order a quesadilla with braised meat. So delicious! If we had not eaten before we arrived I would have gotten dinner. Can not wait to come back! They are having their two year anniversary April 12 so I will be back. I'm so thrilled I heard about Taqueria Sabor Mixteco because the food and the service were both outstanding. The manager talked me through the entire menu, pointing out recommendations and helpfully accommodating my gluten allergy. He even let me taste their mole, which was super rich and full of warm spices, even though I ended up ordering a tlayuda. The tlayuda had perfectly charred corn tortillas, gooey cheese, rich beans, and well-seasoned chicken. I loved the accompanying salsas, especially the smoky one. I also had a mango margarita, which was well-balanced. The restaurant is small, but comfortable, with a large TV for watching sports (the Olympics were on when I was there). Simply excellent. I've been three times and each time my friends and I have loved the amazing food, fabulous service, and beautiful decor. Most recently, I had the guacamole, al pastor tacos, and the enchiladas divorcieras. All were delicious! It's a generous portion with a big basket of fresh, crunchy chips accompanying it. So good! I loved the al pastor tacos - the pork with adobo seasoning and pineapple pieces was fantastic. The enchiladas were great too - the green sauce on the pulled chicken was flavorful and a bit spicy, and the red sauce was so good (I think it might be the pasilla chile). The black refried beans and rice are a nice accompaniment. In addition to the great food, the servers are so nice and friendly, and obviously super proud of their restaurant (as they should be!). Thanks Washingtonian! I'd seen this spot in Wheaton for a while but had never stopped in. What a gem. The service was friendly and the food oh so tasty. We started with the garlic butter shrimp. The toasted bread was great soak up all the sauce. I can't wait to try their torta next time, that bread is perfect for it. We then shared an Alambre of beef and sausage. Such comfort food and appreciated the 3 sauces to amp up the heat a bit. This is the best type of neighborhood spot. Eat local!! read more

I stopped by two weeks ago on a freezing cold and rainy Thursday night. I was happy to be immediately greeted and seated. I've heard so many good reviews about this restaurant and was really excited to finally try it. The place is small inside and no frills but cozy. To start we ordered a mango margarita and a mezcal pineapple-peach margarita. Both good and pretty straight forward. For our appetizer, we got the queso fundido with chorizo to share. It comes with tortillas. It was very good. For our entrees, we got the carne enchilada and the chileajo mixteco. Delicious! The chileajo mixteco came with pork and creamy thick sauce, potatoes, and rice and beans. It looked so great the table next to us immediately asked what it was. The carne enchilada was sizzling, the pork tender, the vegetables perfectly grilled. Our server was attentive and nice. Service was quick and prompt. Overall, we had a really good experience I plan to go back often. I definitely recommend them for anyone looking for great Mexican food. read more

A favorable Washington Post review guided us to out-of-the-way, and easily-overlooked Sabor Mixteco on a drizzly Thursday and we came away highly impressed. Despite many local competitors for fast casual cuisine of many ethnic styles, Sabor Mixteco stands tall as a little restaurant not to be misjudged or overlooked by its humble storefront appearance and inexpensive, pedestrian decoration and ambience, bright colors notwithstanding. Culinary artwork with a Mexican flair can be found inside. Though non-fans of Mexican (and/or Tex-Mex) may wish to give this place a pass, if this cuisine is what you seek, Sabor Mixteco does what they do with excellence and charm. A large and varied lunch menu awaited us with surprisingly affordable prices. With lunch under $20 being difficult to find in the DC Burbs, here you can find many delicious and bountiful choices for less than $15, in 2025. Delicious bargains are rare indeed but exist here. One of us had the burrito, which proved too big to eat for lunch and we brought half home. I had the delicious Pastor Alambre Tacos off the lunch menu. We plan to come back and work through the other offerings too. Sabor Mixteco deserves more business. Maybe the recreational cannabis dispensary a few steps away brings them some? Great food and service! Good for folks with allergies as the menu has allergens clearly marker. Everything is homemade fresh, so they can make sure to avoid problems. I have a gluten allergy and also hate cilantro, so most Mexican places aren't great for me. But this place has all homemade Oaxacan food, which is hearty, subtle and delicious. They can do corn torkittas and even made sure to make my dishes without cilantro! I had the Quedo Fondido, which is not what you'd expect - it's better. My entree was the Chicken Mole Enchiladas, which was enough by itself to feed 2 people! They also have Mexican Coca-Cola (of course), and the staff is super friendly. I watched the owner patiently explain the menu to a Mom with two fidgety kids and he was great. Highly recommended. This will become one of my regular spots. read more

I returned on my own last week for Taco Tuesday when I was in the area checking out another business I learned about through Yelp! Poli (the owner) was very helpful. I placed a to go order for tacos. With the Taco Tuesday special, if you buy three tacos, you get one free. Not bad at all. I got two carne asada and two chicken. I really enjoyed them. The menu here looks so good. We were heading out of DC from visiting our family and was meeting my best friend in their neighborhood for lunch. They're frequent visitors to Sabor Mixteco, so we decided to meet there, since it was on the way north back home for us. There's no parking, but street parking was very easy to find. We started off with some drinks - two of us had the jamaica and one of us had a mango margarita. I ordered the queso fundito to split and it was so good. For mains, I had the lengua taco, braised beef taco, and al pastor taco. I think the lengua was my favorite followed by the braised beef. Everything was super tender and just so juicy. The tacos were also quite good--the Al pastor was especially solid. The Al carbon taco was good, too, but the steak wasn't particularly well seared/charred, but it was well seasoned. We enjoyed our meal at this Oaxacan restaurant! The place is very casual with no frills. We would come back and try other items on the menu. When we arrived for dinner, there were several available tables and they said we could sit anywhere. We sat at a table, and service was attentive. We were in and out in about an hour. Ordered the chips and salsa to start- costs $3.50. The salsa is thin but very flavorful and not spicy in my opinion. I would order this again. We also ordered guacamole, which took about 10 minutes to come out (I guess they were making it fresh), and by that time we pretty much finished our salsa & chips. Our entrees followed the guacamole by a couple of minutes, so we left most of the guacamole for after our entrees. The guacamole tasted fresh, but we probably wouldn't order it again, because of the pacing and the salsa does the trick. As for entrees, we decided to have something other than tacos. We ordered Mole enchiladas and the bistec con salsa pasilla that comes with thick housemade corn tortillas. Both were great dishes. I especially liked how sweet the Mole was, because at other places, it can be overpowering, but not here. They dropped off 3 different types of sauces at our table. I like the green sauce. We ordered agua fresca (fruit juice)- passionfruit and tamarind for $3 each. They were sweet and refreshing. Too full to try their dessert offerings- next time! I'm Mexican, and a California transplant, so Imma keep it real when I tell you it has been challenging to find authentic Mexican food spots on this coast. When I tell you that the rice was righhhht, the beans were creamy and delightful, the tortillas were good like my tia made them, the pasilla enchiladas were unique and flavorful (get cheese and chicken), and the tamarindo agua fresca was LEGIT. They also offer 3 salsas taqueras which is a rarity around here. The service was warm and friendly. They're also on Door Dash, so you know I'm gonna be a regular. Before you even taste any of the wonderful food, your eyes are fed by the colorful landscape of the beautifully decorated building. They really managed to fill up the space they have. On top of that, the service is very nice and easygoing, making it a piece of cake to order and making the experience that much better. I think the best part of this little spot is the staff. They are all very gracious, and nobody will rush you to order or to pay and clear out. I've only visited once, and I ordered the vegetarian burrito. It was good, nothing spectacular. It did have cactus in it, which was a very nice departure from what one typically finds in a burrito. I stopped by Sabor Mixteco for a quick bite to eat while running errands in the area. I thought my three tacos were pretty good. Three tacos were about $16 with an additional $3.5 for beans and rice, which isn't too bad. I was a bit surprised that the restaurant did not provide chips and salsa for customers dining in, but it is what it is. The lady waiting tables (I think she might have been a manager or even an owner) was super nice and friendly. Also, she seemed to have a great rapport with some of the customers. The restaurant itself is pretty no frills, which is always an A+ in my book for these types of places. Unfortunately (at this time), the restaurant is alcohol-free so you might be a bit disappointed if you come here expecting an alcoholic beverages; however, they do have non-alcoholic margaritas. read more
