Stopped in on a Saturday while shopping on antique row. Tacos don Perez is right on the Main Street and easy to find. Parking was a breeze as there are multiple lots and plenty of free street parking. I got the quesadilla, the chicken was lean and seasoned great, the cheese was flavorful and stringy, however there were big chunks of onion? In it. I wish I got just chicken and cheese. The chicken was also wet and the whole quesadilla was quite soggy. My friend got the tacos, there were also big chunks of white vegetable in her meat. My favorite thing was the corn, it was really delicious. The interior is decorated and the service is fast and friendly. You order at the front and they give you a beeper that rings when it's ready. Came here for dinner on a Friday night and enjoyed the lively yet casual atmosphere! This is a solid place for Mexican tacos and food. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with lots of art and vibrant colors. We got the birria tacos, Al pastor torta, and shrimp tostada to go and ate them in the small park nearby (Flinn Park). Everything was delicious and well portioned. The torta was really good and something we don't typically see on menus- so want to give that a shout out. The bread was toasty even with all the filling, which included meat, pickled jalapeños, refried beans, cheese, avocado, lettuce, and tomato - wow! We were so impressed at how good it was. The birria tacos were tasty too, and still crunchy when we got to the park. The shrimp tostada was okay- generous with the shrimp but I thought the tomato sauce it came in was too sweet. We also got one of their agua frescas which comes in a bag! Overall, a solid spot with a creative menu and great service. 5 stars every.single.time. I think we've tried literally every kind of taco/quesadilla/torta they offer, all the sauces, and all the drinks. The employees are kind and the layout is perfect for a group lunch/dinner. Or takeout. My favorite has to be the melon/cantaloupe or marañón agua frescas, an order of Birria or Flor de Calabaza or lengua tacos with a side of Hot Cheeto Elote. Topped with the green salsa if you're feeling snazzy. The elote is a meal in itself, so satisfying, and they're generous with the taco filling. If you're ever close by and in the mood for tacos or tortas, try them out! The elote is enough of a reason but the tacos will make you come back again and again :D read more

FOOD: 5/5 would totally recommend. I got 3 tacos and the corn with half spicy half not and it was quite literally the best corn I had ever had in my life. I've always seen it online but it's definitely something I'll be craving on a request basis. The tacos were yummy! SERVICE/AMBIANCE: very chill, calm, and a nice local spot! I would like to say I'm finally excited to find a true authentic taco place. I know cooking lengua isn't always easy however it was perfectly cooked best place so far for me. You can tell everything is extremely fresh ingredients. It's well balanced the torta or spicy in it with every bite. Only complain is having it wrapped white hot makes the bread soggy fast. Elote was generously coated and so good. Tacos was perfect with each bite. The service was fast and they are so polite with assisting you. The place is located on a street next to several cute shops nearby. There is only street parking available. the place itself is cozy, clean, and vibrant! I came here with a group of friends, but I didn't do a good job of remembering what everyone ordered this is more like a 3.5, but will round it up to 4 for their variety menu. so here's what I ordered and remembered: I ordered three birria tacos with consomme, shared a half and half esquites and chorizo con papa quesadilla. The birria tacos were yummy -- a little more greasy than other places with less cheese. I expected them to be more crispy, but they were very flavorful. The quesadilla was also a little oily, but still delightful to eat. Just harder to eat it as a quesadilla and used a fork/knife to pick up. I didn't taste the chorizo as much as the potatoes or cheese. Lastly the corn with spicy Cheetos tasted good while the other half was good! My friends recommend their other tacos and tortas. They were a little loud and cramped--if the line is long, it means that folks are standing right over your shoulder if you are in one of the four tables closer to the counter. I had the birria tacos and a chorizo with potato taco. The chorizo taco was quite good--not too salty, well seasoned. The birria tacos were good, but inconsistently filled. One was almost overstuffed (not a problem, as far as I'm concerned) and one was quite underfilled. I saw from another yelp review that at least one other person complained about a not-so-generously-filled birria taco, and I had that issue with one of the 3 tacos as well. But my experience suggests it is about being inconsistent, not about being stingy. read more

The brick and mortar location of the infamous food truck has finally come! I dream about the Quesa Birria tacos here. They are magical in every way. This place is definitely more authentic then any of the other taco places around here. They do the al pastor street tacos and the juiciest barbacoa... Found this cute little spot in Kensington I was in the area and in the mood for tacos and I must say, ten out of ten would recommend. Every Tuesday I pick a different area to do remote work and I had a meeting in Kensington and chose to stay stuck around. It was Tuesday and I wanted to get tacos for the family and this was it! The taco box came with 12 tacos more than enough for a family of 2.5 I added a side of guac and it was great. I definitely preferred the chicken over the beef for flavor but they were both really good! The guac was well made, and the chips were fresh. The staff was really nice and the service for carry out was pretty quick. There are tables inside to dine in and the are surrounding was super cute. Finally got to visit the brick-and-mortar location, yay! I recalled seeing on social media that they have a new menu item -- nachos! I was in the neighborhood for a Con, so I decided to use the opportunity to pay them a visit... and I'm so glad I did! Their (not so) new space is lovely -- plenty of tables, music cranking, and lovely decor. Ordering was a breeze, and I was delighted to see that the nachos can come with ANY option that is available for the tacos and other things. I decided to keep it veggie and do the squash blossom. They also gave the heads up that the sour cream is more like a chipotle sour cream... perfectly fine with me! The tray was LOOOOOOADED when I received it, and I had to split it into two meals. Shout out to my air fryer making reheating a breeze! It was an excellent chips to toppings ratio -- very few chips were left dry and I loved the flavors. I was a walk-in and did carryout, and it took about 15min to get my order which is not too bad of a wait especially since it was lunch time and I'm sure they are also busy with online orders and such. MISSING CILANTRO There are two types of people in this world: Those who love Birria Tacos, and those who have never tried Birria Tacos. Tacos Don Perez is responsible for introducing me to Birria Tacos for the first time. I heard about the food truck in Glenmont on the Nextdoor app, heard the tacos were really delicious, and so I drove down from Brookeville to try it out. This was summer 2023. Really, really, really good! This experience, out of a food truck in the parking lot of a strip mall, introduced me to an orchestra of flavors that is difficult to describe. It was a combination of textures that collaborate into one, and yet each displays its own unique attribute: lusciousness, spiciness, tartness, sourness, hotness, and tanginess; each distinct and independent, and yet somehow all working together in perfect harmony while producing a mouthfeel which only leaves you wanting more. In short, this taco is a flavor bomb. Most Americans have never tasted anything like this. It was so good that I had to find a recipe and begin making them at home. It's a lot of work and a lot of time! But worth it! They are my new favorite food. Better than sushi! So, when I heard about the brick & mortar on Howard Ave. in old town Kensington, I had to check it out. I did that today. I got there right when they opened at 11 AM on a Friday. Very charming, interesting neighborhood. Really nice clean establishment. Lots of color, neon lights, and bright cheer. Live plants at the window. Mexican music playing on the speakers. Small but intimate. Friendly staff. 26 seats (four 4-tops, two 2-tops, and six seats at a bar facing a big picture window facing the street). I ordered the three Birria Quesa Tacos with the consumé. By definition, this is a Birria taco of meat (slow-cooked beef, lamb, or goat) with melted cheese within a fried corn tortilla shell served with a cup of the same broth the meat was cooked in. I waited maybe 10 minutes or so and the order was ready! These Birria tacos included the classic fried soft crunchy tender orange shell with meat (I presume beef), chopped white onions and melted cheese. On the side were four cucumber slices and four radish slices. These are to be placed within each taco as one wishes. A packet of green Mexican hot sauce was included. Also, three fresh very juicy lime sections, one for each taco! Plenty of juice! And of course, the consumé. The consumé is a Birria soup/broth with a small amount of beans and rice. The broth is used sort of like a French Dip for tacos! Really good! The tacos were as described above. Absolutely juicy and delicious. Do not be put off by the fact that there are no tomatoes or lettuce included. Welcome the ethnicity of these Mexican tacos. Embrace the radish, cucumber and lime! Do not hesitate to jump in with both feet! These are not Tex-Mex tacos, and I warn you, you may never eat another Tex-Mex taco again. What was missing was the cilantro. Not sure why. Birria tacos are supposed to include cilantro. I had been to the food truck in Glenmont 4-5 times, and cilantro was included each time, EXCEPT the last time which was about two months ago. The guy at the window actually asked me if I wanted cilantro, and I said, "Of course!" I thought it was standard and wasn't sure why he asked. But then my order didn't have any cilantro! And this time at Kensington was the same. No cilantro. Not sure what is going on with that. Looking at the photos on this site, it appears some of the tacos have plenty of cilantro, some have no cilantro, and some have very tiny bits of cilantro. In my opinion, the cilantro should be large-leaf and plentiful because you want to be able to taste the cilantro. The flavor of the cilantro is one of the many things that makes these tacos so spectacular. And if the cilantro is missing or they are chopped too small, the flavor gets lost. Anyway, the tacos were still outstanding and still deserve five stars. Maybe I'll bring a little baggy of fresh cilantro leaves in my pocket next time. :-) read more

This is a great place! The mural-style painting on the inside is so very pretty -- it's bright and obvious, making it easy to find, with a large floral motif that's festive and reminiscent of where the food is from. The look outside and in is so happy! I really like the decorations inside -- especially the flowering saguaro cactus neon sign by the equally bright and pretty frozen desserts. The cashier who took my order was very nice and accommodating, letting the kitchen know I'd like a vegetarian version of their pambazo -- by chance I had somehow been looking at this on their online menu before I ever knew where this place was and then happened upon it, so that was completely awesome! -- and let me tell you, what arrived on my tray did not disappoint! It was delicious and filling, fresh and fried, crispy and warm, just the right amount and very flavourful, mmm! Best Mexican sandwich around! For me, just even seeing this place before walking in had the added benefit and bonus of reminding me of my time/s spent living and learning in the Southwest U.S. and Mexico .... The music is lively (enough to dance in your seat, ha ha! That's what I did!), and it's overall a very fun atmosphere inside this clean, bright, cozy, well-decorated place! There are things here I haven't yet tried and for which I must go back including the amazing-looking nachos I saw on someone else's table! Mmm .... I would say thank God this place is here, changing (or at least giving a break from!) an overall stodgy feeling that Kensington sadly has, in my opinion. Perhaps I have a soft spot for TDP; their tacos, as always, are so amazing and I love that they now have an actual store, so we can get tacos even when the weather is crummy out! Today, I wanted to get wild and crazy and try some new ones: a chorizo con papas, a mixed veggie, and my beloved birria of course. The birria and mix veggie were served hot and shells were still nice and crispy. The mixed veggie one was not bad (for any vegetarians out there), but I love my meat tacos. I would've loved to taste more papas in my chorizo con papas one. My pepino y limon agua fresca (they still serve it in their plastic baggies) was good, def could've used more pepino, limon, and sugar. They've now got room for lots and lots of desserts like arroz con leche, flan, choco flan, I saw a mango cake, and really about 3 more desserts. Service, even on a Friday during prime lunch time, was quick, which I really appreciated. The space inside was festive and clean. They've got about 6 high-top against the storefront window and seating for 20 more. *Street parking and perhaps free parking in the back, though I did not check. The food was sooo good! The birria consume almost tasted like pozole and seemed to have bits of rice and hominy in it. I got the three birria tacos and they were really good. the spicy salsa that come with it does have a nice kick and good flavor! The inside of the restaurant is beautiful and has such cool artwork and adorable little figures of Jesus and Mary. The gentleman taking our order was really nice and even reassured me that all of their tacos are completely gluten free. I ate all three tacos with no issues so I would say that the tacos are celiac friendly. read more

My first visit to Tacos Don Perez. I got the Mixed Veggie Tacos. They were absolutely delicious.. Perhaps the best tacos I've ever had. The service was quick and courteous. They were doing a good lunchtime business . But still plenty of places to sit. I don't think AC was working, but other than that, it was a terrific lunch. I will return here and recommend to others. I drove by this place for about 4 months before noticing it. Last day of school date with my daughter. The food, those tacos ....probably the greatest tacos I have ever ate in my life. We visited at a good time, before lunch rush. This time I tried the pamboza and it was delicious and it came out just as it looked on pics (sorry, forgot to take a pic). I just requested the lettuce on the side, because I don't like hot wilted lettuce on warm sandwiches, and they accommodated. Chorizo-potato filling was plentiful, full of flavor. The elote corn cob was huge and perfect....1/2 had hot cheeto bits....it was good, but I prefer the traditional one I had on last visit. My party of three came on a quiet afternoon, and ordered bistec tacos, lengua tacos, carne asada quesadillas, and Birria tacos, and piña, Jamaica, and Pepino con Limón juices. Best tacos in the DMV area, no doubt. My partner is from Mexico and struggles with the very limited quality options for mexican food in the DMV. Tacos Don Perez is her favorite and we were excited to hear that they'd opened a brick and mortar location (the OG location is closer to Glenmont and is located in a parking lot). The food still holds up, excellent and full of flavor. Don't come if you're looking to eat healthy. Only complaint was it gets warm in there during the summer. read more

My friends noted they didn't particularly enjoy the sauce packets due to them being in plastic bags. You don't have as much control as one would like when using hot salsas. Green salsa just tasted like guacamole, but the red salsa was spicy and flavorful! The complaint of the salsa packets is a minor issue, we all really enjoyed our food. I got the pambazo, which I highly recommend if you are wanting to try something different outside of tacos and tortas. Their tortas were delicious, my friends all got the same flavor, which was carne asada, but I imagine the other meats are tasty. We tried their arroz con leche served cold, it was very tasty. My friend got their hot chocolate they offer during winter season and she enjoyed it greatly. The restaurant is quite small, so be warned if you have a big party it's not the most ideal place to eat in, instead you should take it to go. They have another location in silver spring with outdoor seating. The service is fine nothing notable you aren't served your food, you pick it up at the counter.
