    Kao soi chicken
    Stuart M.

We recently visited Thailand where we had great food. Birdsong matches some of Thailand's best dishes bite for bite. We had khao soi, a dish with coconut milk and curry. The chicken was tender, and trimmed free from fat and gristle. Noodles , mustard greens, lime, and chilies round out the dish. The heat is there, but not overwhelming. Our other dish was massaman curry. The beef was melt in your mouth tender, with potatoes, onions, and peanuts to round out the. Again, just the right amount of heat. Finally, thai tea choux craquelin made a nice dessert closer. The cream puff dough adds texture, and the thai tea cream filling gives closing flavors without sugar. And it is so pretty to look at that you almost hesitate to take that first bite.

Great decor in the dining room.

Birdsong is a new Thai spot in Chevy Chase, on a stretch that could sorely use a top notch dining experience, and based on my first visit, they nailed it. They are still in their "opening phase," which means a limited menu, but it just makes me more excited to see what they have in store down the line. To start, I have to compliment the space. They have a very inviting patio out front that looks like it is going to be so nice during the summer. They gave it a really fun and bright paint job. The interior is warm and welcoming with tons of wood and a standout multi-color mural on the wall. Nicely done all around. We sampled a couple cocktails to get things going, and they really impressed. These are as good as what you'll find at more cocktail focused bars, possibly the best mixed cocktails in this part of town. The uncle boonmee is an old fashioned variation with peanut and banana notes. With these flavors, it easily could have been overpowering or overly sweet, but it isn't - it is all balanced so perfectly, I loved it. My wife had the ha-ha-ha, a highball with pineapple infused mezcal and a coconut foam. If you want a refreshing sipper, this one is perfect. Lots of zero-proof cocktails, too, if that's your thing. The food hits the spot, too. I appreciate that they serve dishes that you are not going to find at every Thai restaurant in town. The tom yum shrimp dumplings were a perfect start, very fresh. The basil shrimp appetizer looked too good to pass up, too, so we ordered that one. You get large, perfectly battered, tasty bites of shrimp. The clear champ of this meal, though, was the khao soi, a coconut milk curry with egg noodles and fried chicken (you can get it with veggies or shrimp instead if you prefer). I was spooning up the sauce at the end I enjoyed it so much. It had just a hint of spice and great flavor. I will definitely be getting it again. We didn't save room for dessert, but it looked like most tables did. The table next to us was raving to their server about the chocolate donut holes. They did look good. I can't wait to go back and highly recommend trying them.

White curry is my favorite and always delicious.

White curry is so delicious and my favorite. Fried Egg salad is an add on. You may try!! Both are not too spicy.

Superb from start to finish! Our server, Ryan, was super informative as well. We ordered the Thai Fried Rice and shrimp dumplings, as well as the sweet and salty radish. The menu items were unique and everything we ate was perfectly balanced and executed. We ended with the chocolate mouse cheesecake and my party loved it. The drinks are also prepared by a Michelin Star mixologist. 10/10

I'd recommend trying to come a bit earlier in the night or on a slightly off day -- we came by around 8 PM on a Thursday -- and you might be able to slip in with no or minimal wait. We were initially placed at a standing table, then relocated to a proper table when one opened up after about 30 minutes. It is a smidge loud, but still manageable, and I love the cozy, homey atmosphere created by the dim lighting, almost industrial architecture mixed with old fashioned bookshelves (which double as bathroom doors), and candles. They have a short menu of custom cocktails you can choose from, or you can also ask for any of the classics and/or tell the bartender what you typically enjoy and let them come up with a good fit. We tried a smattering of cocktails, including two from their menu, a whiskey sour, and a bee sting (which the bartender selected for us based on our general preferences). Each one was expertly crafted and extremely tasty, and made so much better by the ambiance.

I generally will add myself to the waitlist and then head out to grab dinner. If you are called before dinner is finished, they are generally good about moving you further down the waitlist. For drinks, they have a small cocktail menu but the whole appeal is to let the server know your typical preferred drinks/flavor profile and they will create a drink for you. I generally always go that route and have been happy with my drinks. I even requested a non alcoholic drink once and I felt like i got the same fun experience.

I have been to the neighborhood before but not this particular location. I arrive a bit early and get a table immediately. The restaurant is on the dark side so you have to tip your menu toward the table light. I was in the mood for spaghetti and meatballs ( not on the menu) but the waitress took the order without a problem. I also ordered garlic bread. She brought a glass of water and I decided on a glass of wine, pinot noir I think. The garlic bread and wine arrive quick. I'm enjoying the first piece of garlic bread and sipping the wine. Nice! The spaghetti and meatballs came out shortly thereafter. I was a disappointed with this part of the meal. Meatballs lacked flavor. No garlic, no parmesan cheese. The pasta was fine but the sauce was watery and didn't taste like gravy at all. I ate most of it, the garlic bread accenting the meal with the wine. I will probably go back. I like the small mom and pop restaurants like I'm Eddie Cano. Service was very good. I was able to get a reservation. The place was clean. It's coming up on comfort food season and I'm always in the mood for Italian.

And what a joy that is. Although it has been around for decades, Buck's has adapted deftly to our current inflationary environment. Perhaps a luxurious dish like steak au poivre is not longer affordable? Well then, how about Burger Au Poivre? With top quality toppings creatively prepared: grilled oyster mushrooms, gruyere and white cheddar cheese, and grilled vincotta marinated onions. Oh my word. All of it was beautifully plated on a bed of cracked peppercorn sauce. Of course the meat itself was of excellent quality, perfectly cooked to order at medium rare. At $31 it is not cheap, but I think a bargain for a meal that sends you over the moon. An equivalent quality steak would have been exorbitant. We paired it with asparagus tempura (also excellent), a nice bottle of Montepulciano de Abruzzo, and for dessert, apple crisp. I also truly appreciate that the portions are generous. Another thing that has become rare these days. Given the service and unique ambience, this is a special occasion restaurant that is fantastic bang for the "Buck," while also casual enough for date-night any day of the week.
