Delightful speakeasy with remarkably cozy vibes, super friendly service, and delicious cocktails. This small, no-reservations-allowed space is hard to snag a spot in (unless you're willing to wait in their multi-hour-long waitlist), but it's 100% worth the hype and effort. I'd recommend trying to come a bit earlier in the night or on a slightly off day -- we came by around 8 PM on a Thursday -- and you might be able to slip in with no or minimal wait. We were initially placed at a standing table, then relocated to a proper table when one opened up after about 30 minutes. It is a smidge loud, but still manageable, and I love the cozy, homey atmosphere created by the dim lighting, almost industrial architecture mixed with old fashioned bookshelves (which double as bathroom doors), and candles. They have a short menu of custom cocktails you can choose from, or you can also ask for any of the classics and/or tell the bartender what you typically enjoy and let them come up with a good fit. We tried a smattering of cocktails, including two from their menu, a whiskey sour, and a bee sting (which the bartender selected for us based on our general preferences). OKPB is a popular speakeasy, a pretty small space. You show up and use the ring doorbell to connect with the host. They will add you to the waitlist and give you an estimated time. I generally will add myself to the waitlist and then head out to grab dinner. If you are called before dinner is finished, they are generally good about moving you further down the waitlist. For drinks, they have a small cocktail menu but the whole appeal is to let the server know your typical preferred drinks/flavor profile and they will create a drink for you. I generally always go that route and have been happy with my drinks. I even requested a non alcoholic drink once and I felt like i got the same fun experience. read more

They change their menu often, but also let you describe the vibes/type of drink you want and they'll use their magic to make something perfect for you! We stopped by OKPB around 11 PM on a Saturday and were lucky enough to get seats without a wait (they close at midnight). This spot is easy to miss -- the door isn't on the main street and there's no large sign to mark it. You'll need to keep an eye out, then ring the doorbell to be let in. It adds to the speakeasy feel and makes the experience feel a little more secretive. For this visit, we sat at the bar, which I'd definitely recommend if you're planning on doing bartender's choice. It's easier to describe what you like, watch them work, and get some conversation in. The bartenders were friendly, and while the drinks they made were enjoyable, I did feel the "customization" leaned more toward picking from a set of known cocktails rather than fully creating something unique on the spot. This leaned very sour -- passion fruit forward, tangy, and refreshing, but missing the sweetness I was hoping for to balance it. I've been to this speakeasy twice and both times have been amazing. This place has some of the best cocktails in the city. If you are planning to go especially on a weekend, I would recommend showing up right when they open at 5 otherwise, you'll have a 1-2 hour wait. They are very communicative though when they put you on the waitlist. The service is pretty fast at the bar especially and while they have a limited daily menu, the bartenders were willing to make something off menu. The hostess was very pleasant and transitions in and out were smooth. For an ideal experience, come as pairs. 3 or more will be waiting a while. I really wanted to love this place after hearing so much about it, but the experience just fell flat. OKPB is a speakeasy in Mount Pleasant. It's fun finding the red door and ringing the doorbell to be let in. Staff was super friendly and the space was cute. Their gimmick is that they have a rotating list of cocktails every night or a bartender's special option where you tell them what sort of things you like and they make a drink for you. This is what they're known for and what I'd had people recommend trying. Unfortunately, it didn't work that way in practice. I asked for a drink made with tequila and got a drink made with rum, the one alcohol I'd asked not to get, that also didn't include the only flavor I'd asked for (coconut, which I feel is not a crazy unusual flavor for a bar to have?). In the end, they weren't confident they could make anything with those components, and I didn't want to have it not work again, so I gave up and just ordered an amaretto sour. I wish they'd just told me they couldn't do it from the beginning instead of bringing me something that was the complete opposite of what I'd asked for. The amaretto sour was good (well, it's a drink I already know I like), but it was just like what I'd get at any other bar. I was kind of sad because I don't think I asked for anything too demanding or out there, and I'm sure they have tequila in the bar, but in the end it didn't come close to anything I'd requested. I wouldn't go back based on my experience. I feel like I paid $16 for a drink I didn't want and that just wasn't that good. I had a good time with friends and the space is cute! There are no reservations and space is limited, so get here early if you do want to try it out. Honestly, though, I can't recommend it. Okay, I see why people talk about this spot. The speakeasy vibes are ALL there! As long as you have the address, it's fairly easy to locate, though it may not be immediately obvious. When you arrive, you will be asked how many are in your party... and thankfully everyone doesn't have to be present. I see why they ask this too! The place is SUPER small! I'd say it can maybe fit 15-20 people max? The bar has 5 seats, and there are a few tables that I'd say can fit no more than 3 each. Also, it's dim, but not so much that you can't see things. Anyways, the drink selection looks lovely... but none of those are on happy hour Happy hour is from 5-7 and includes martinis, manhattans, mules and Fitzgeralds, a tasty Gin-based cocktail. I settled for the latter and was a huge fan! I later had a dry martini but the Fitzgerald was my favorite. I arrived around 5, and it got crowded around 6. If you're sitting at one of the tables grouped together, it can feel a little tight... during the peak of COVID, I feel like this probably wasn't okay. Anyways, the staff were super attentive, and the vibe of the place was awesome. Definitely a top speakeasy -- and affordable (especially during HH). We got a very cute booth (the only one) in the back. There are also some seats at the bar and some two tops. The menu of the day was pretty short: a rum swizzle, a gin and sherry cocktail, a bourbon cocktail, a riff on French 75, and a rye brandy cocktail. Our waiter suggested we go with the Bartender's Choice, which all four of us did. They did a good job making cocktails based on our description except for one. My companion specifically asked for a drink like the first one on the menu, except sweeter and more like a tiki drink. Instead, he basically got the drink on the menu -- rum, lime, mint, bitters, and crushed iced. Basically, the exact wrong thing. I would have sent it back, but he demurred. Hole in the wall GEM! It's a speakeasy, so ofc it's a hole in the wall but I was so impressed with this little place! We got there late on a Thursday so ofc there was a wait time which was worth it. I've heard a lot of people rave about OKPB and for good reason. Hearing the popularity of this place I was honestly shocked that going on a Saturday night we were even able to get a spot for 2. There are no reservations so after ringing the bell on the nondescript door, we were kindly told the wait would be about an hour and a half. I believe we got a text our table is ready in less time than that which was a pro. We were escorted up the dimly lit staircases into a small but very cool space. Even the restrooms were hidden behind bookcases, just another interesting twist to the set up. Our waiter was very friendly and the whole concept of having a daily rotating menu is so cool! Even if nothing on the menu speaks to you they will still help you find a drink that you would want to order which was awesome. One of my favorite cocktail bars in DC. The service is warm, friendly, informative, and attentive. The cocktails never disappoint. I typically order off menu and tell them I want something with tequila that's sweet or something along those lines. Every concoction they've handed me has been delicious. A no frills speakeasy with damn good drinks is a lost art, one that's found at OKPB. Yes it's in that jank unmarked door - ring the bell and you'll get on the list. But once you're upstairs, you're transported to a dimly lit bar maybe 100 years back - real intimate place that's good for 2-4. And best part obviously is the drinks. Very small menu that changes daily, but what makes this place great is they can basically make you anything. That's not even a privilege exclusive to sitting at the bar. Tell them what you like flavor-wise, liquor-wise etc. and they got you covered. It's to the point where even some of the virgin drinks are that damn good - you can feel the effort and thought that goes into them, which I appreciate when I'm driving! You'll go up a narrow flight of stairs and you will get transported to their small well-decorated and dimly-lit bar where you forget what time of day it is. Not for big parties so best to go with just 1-2 other people. If you do have to wait, there are plenty of restaurants and other bars nearby to wait after you put your name down. The 5-7pm happy hour for $8 select drinks is an amazing deal. The handwritten menus on lined paper change every day and you can also get whatever your heart fancies with getting bartender's choice. I love the little touches throughout the space, like a Snoopy embroidery and the bathrooms that have a bookshelf as a door. The servers and bartenders are awesome too! There is only one large group table that I'm aware of, and the line forms quickly, so I highly suggest going early. Happy hour runs from 5-7, including 4 different drinks that are half off ($8/each). The drinks are strong, and made with care! My favorite was my Moscow mule, which had a stick of ice rather than typical ice cubes (see picture), and was very "earthy." I have been to OKPB probably 7-8 times and my last visit will be my last one. I show up with a party of 4 ring the bell and get told about an hour wait. No problem, we go a couple of doors down to Purple Patch and have a great meal. Right as the meal is over and we pay I get a text saying our table is ready. We walk over and get taken up. Well turns out the table was not ready. The host places four of us at a tiny side table thing behind the bar seating to the left. If you've been there you know it's a "table" about 18"x18", I look at the host and he says don't worry a table will open up in a minute. I kind of wonder why they texted me if the table was not already ready. Again been there multiple times and know it can take a minute to get your drink but it turned out to be closer to 25 minutes before we got our first round. Note we are still uncomfortably grouped around a tiny place to just rest our drinks. Two 2 tops open up next to us so I figure ok they will push them together and those will be ours. Nope the toast just brings in more people. when this happens I go and ask what is going on. The host then tells me that technically the tiny table we are standing next to is technically a spot. I just kind of look at him in disbelief and ask for our check with takes another 10 minutes. I give the place 2 stars because it used to not suck. OKPB is definitely a unique gem. Let me count the ways. (1) It's an actual speakeasy, not a faux-speakeasy. Get the address and push the doorbell for entrance. Word to the wise, the place is tiny, so unless you have the luck of a thousand genies on your side, you will be waiting. We came around 5:30 on a Saturday and waited about 90 minutes before we got the text to come back. You can't go far because once your table is ready, you've got 10 minutes to get back. One last note on the tiny-ness of the space - they pack you in tight. Uncomfortably tight. We were literally touching thighs with the people on either side of us, a situation that is never comfortable, especially if one of them gets a bit antsy, and who doesn't after a couple cocktails? (2) Their bathroom doors are fake bookcases. I was confused at first, but then I pushed in and felt like I was in a Scooby Doo episode searching for a villain dressed like a ghost, or maybe in a knight costume. But in this version, you take off the mask to reveal it's actually a suspender-clad bartender mixing up something delicious. Buzzy and highly recommended by every local bartender we asked for speakeasy recommendations. You may be looking for a trip to the dentist but there's no anesthesia needed for this bar experience. We opted for one specialty cocktail off the menu each, as well as a bartenders choice for our second drink. The "smoking jacket" "mint daiquiri" and both our bartenders choice drinks were phenomenal and unique. They make their ice in house and it was an underrated detail!! The front of house staff, our waiter and the bartender were all kind and helpful. We can't wait to come back for their happy hour. No reservations accepted but there are so many amazing local restaurants nearby if you need to be added to the wait list. This place is more than "OK" in our books. read more
