Being new to the city, L'Annexe was on the list from multiple people as a place to try. Last night was the end of that 7 month wait. Needless to say, the seven months could have been 14 and I would probably have been okay. I'm giving it one star for the ambience, it's clean, lit well, and has an amazing decor. A little tight, and you can definitely hear other tables if they are speaking loudly. My group met for drinks and it was not great. Our charcuterie featured cheese that was drowned in the overwhelming olive oil juices on the plate, which, while some may love, provided a sour experience for anything else that touched it. After this, we each got inconsistent drinks during both rounds. Whether it was too sour, or too sweet, there is an obvious lack of standards at the bar that translates into your experience. You'll probably be okay if you get a wine or liquor straight, but the cocktail experience will leave you wanting to go somewhere else. For a location that is already out of the way due to lack of transit options, it did not leave an experience that makes you want to go back. read more

Perfect vibe for a catch-up, nightcap, or date. L'Annexe is located in the heart of Georgetown and their cocktails were well worth the visit. Inventive with creative takes on classics (the rotating old fashioned included duck fat - yes it was delicious), L'Annexe provided a great atmosphere with light music, a casual buzz from the conversations taking place, and friendly and attentive bartenders working their magic and making great recommendations. This bar has three distinct areas. One is the bar, which is the first thing you see, and, in my opinion, the most chill area. The second part is the dining area, which is incredibly loud if it's full. The last area is this library-like section in the back, which seemed really cool and the most speakeasy of it all. But according to the staff, they charge by the hour there. I was first, and I briefly considered relocating from the dining area to the bar, but we just stayed there. It really was loud, lol. I got the Benny Blanco and shared a taco and slider with my friend. Benny Blanco was fantastic, and, while the Korean taco had good flavor, it fell apart. For almost $10/taco, they should definitely not be falling apart! Layering up extra saucy tacos should be a given. Slider was good too. I had a good time, but I wouldn't call it one of my favorite city speakeasies. I could hear the music from down the block... and it's really not hidden, haha -- but that back room? L'Annexe is beautiful, cozy and sophisticated with incredibly innovative and thoughtfully made cocktails! I've been here a handful of times now, often after dinner somewhere nearby. Twice I've been seated in the main dining area, once in the lounge space and most recently at the bar. Truth be told, I've had a wonderful visit every time. But as someone who truly likes to experience the magic behind the bar, I would say that I had the most fun I had was this past visit when we were seated at the bar. Of course it helps that a bartender that I've known over the years from other establishments was holding court that night, keeping us entertained and dazzling us with "surprise me" cocktails. The first cocktail I tried was Queen of the South (cilantro macerated reposado tequila, lime,habanero-cilantro shrub, egg white.) Although it wasn't something I wouldn't usually order it was delicious and packed quite the punch. My second cocktail was a PB&J Old Fashioned and THAT, my friend was my jam (er, jelly?) Ivan was bartending and as always, so professional, so knowledgeable, so hospitable and always 100 percent good vibes. It seemed like everyone else seated at the bar was having the exact same experience we were, enjoying themselves. Seriously, though this place is top notch if you enjoy craft cocktails. I won't rate it a 1 because we didn't get actual service but dealing with this place was awful. We walked in for a party of three expecting a wait and they told us it would be about 45 minutes. We put our name down and received a text confirming our spot. We went to a different place to get a sweet treat while we waited. After an hour with no text we went back. The host said "at most it will be 40 more minutes". I'm not sure where he was getting these times from but 40 minutes on top of the hour was not the 45 minutes we had been told. We were pretty frustrated because if we knew it was going to be almost two hours we would have went somewhere else for drinks but at this point it was getting later and we didn't think many other places in Georgetown would have room before the 40 more minutes. We sat at the nice Italian place across the street and waited an hour while having a glass of wine. After that second hour passed without a text we left the area. By the end of the night we never revived a text from the bar. This would be a different review if we had been told off the bat "we're full tonight sorry" or when we came back to check after an hour he apologized and said it was looking like there wouldn't be room. However we were told 45 or 40 minute and then NEVER heard back. Very disappointing. Terrible service. Will not attempt to go there again. read more

This is a cute bar. Very small, but cute. It's located right on M St in Georgetown, so I can imagine that parking is a nightmare. The inside had a lot going on, but I like it. It looked like a classy bar, a log cabin, and a speakeasy all in one, with a huge map of DC on one side of the bar. We walked in without reservations on a Friday evening, and it was packed. There were no seats available at the bar and all the tables were taken. We waited for a few minutes, and luckily, one of the tables left, so we were then able to sit. The staff was mostly nice, but out server seemed very timid and confused. The drink menu is very creative and exciting, with drinks ranging from $18-22. I opted for the Wild Margarita Chapter VII. It was supposed to be like a spicy cucumber margarita, but it was surprisingly on the bland side. It wasn't bad, just a little disappointing. My friend opted for a mocktail since she was driving. Although mocktails aren't listed on the menu, the server said that they did have one. Unfortunately, my friend did not want it because it sounded sweet. A manager walked by, so she asked the manager if the bartender could come up with something creative. Luckily, he did, and she liked it. We didn't stay long, but I am looking forward to coming back and trying more of the drinks because I'm still intrigued and liked the vibe of the bar. read more

I think the portion that's shown online (the gorgeous library vibe) doesn't match the normal experience here. First, you only get sat in the trendy portion if you have a group of 6 or more. The front bar was cute but the middle part we were sat in was cold and very millennial. I was quite bummed that we couldn't be sat in the nicer atmosphere but whatever. Drinks are all $20-$25+ which I guess is normal for the area. For $19 you can get three burger sliders without even a side of chips or fries. The burger quality was good but they were too messy and they want to up charge you for a 4th slider so a party of 2 could both split and have 2 each. Make sure to specify Tap water and not just still- their still water is $8 Evian. Service was ok but was never sure who was our true waiter or waitress. We were the only people in the middle room at 5:30 and they decided to sit another two top directly to our right. The tables are about one foot apart so it ruined the date night vibe (and there were 9 other open tables they could have been sat). The drinks were a bit too funky- a few were OK but duck fat bourbon drinks didn't sound too tasty. Overall the ambiance wasn't what expected, we basically ended up with over priced water and sliders and sitting directly next to strangers in an empty room. read more

Visited on a Sunday afternoon to try the craft cocktails and small bites. We were seated in the front bar area near the window which was open and nice with lots of table space for a group. The service was great - Connor was great and was very knowledgeable about the menu providing us with drink recommendations and food recommendations of some of the restaurant favorites. I truly enjoyed the shrimp ceviche and goat cheese lollipops. We also had the burrata flatbread slices which was a little tough in texture to eat and had an overly healthy amount of toppings which was a little messy to eat. This is a craft cocktail bar so the drinks are very thoughtful and have interesting flavors. I tried the Beach Blanket - blueberry macerated rum yellow Chartreuse allspice and cinnamon and nutmeg. It is smoked with a cinnamon stick and was full and sweet. The team was prompt in clearing the table and bringing dishes as well as checking in on our table. I came here for the first time for a double date with friends. It was a Friday night, we didn't make reservations but we were able to be seated in the backroom which was amazing. Service: Ivan and the rest of the team were fantastic. They seated us with a group of other folks that were strangers, but because they made the experience seem so friendly. It didn't feel awkward at all. They checked in on us and made sure that we were cool, and I never felt isolated from the overall restaurant experience, even though we were in the back. Ambiance: this place is truly chic. Perfect for a date night or a special occasion. The main restaurant has dimmer lighting so it's kind of romantic while the back room with a little bit well better lit, and had a conversation style seating with books and tchotchkes all around the room everywhere my eyes looked I saw something new and interesting, which I loved. There was upbeat music playing in the background that wasn't overpowering, and really set the tone for good vibes. Cocktails: the drink menu was a true, true cocktail bar. Super interesting mixes from savory to sweet to tangy. There was definitely some thing for every pallet. There are small bites you can order to go along with your drinks but they aren't super great - just something to nibble on. Came here for a drink. Drink which I tried was the FTC won't let me be. Actually it was a pretty good drink Mount water down but had a good flavor. I'm digging this vibe of this place it did get a little noisy when I left with a very big crowd in the back. Ambiance is nice. I wish that this bar would have some kind of snack mix or nuts to notch on when you have something to drink but sadly it did not. And the only thing they really had for appetizers was bread. The menu was a a bit challenging to get in a hard copy version. They prefer digital menus which I'm not a fan of. The prices a bit high but that's what you get when you're in Georgetown.. Best cocktails I've had in DC in quite some time. We ordered a few, including: - Excuz-Ume - Japanese whisky, crème de banane, black walnut bitters. This one was my favorite by far. Incredibly smooth and slightly fruity. - Queen of Diamonds - Vodka, hibiscus, mango, rose, saffron, lemon. Nice flavors but too much froth (and I love frothy drinks, so that's saying something) - Enough Already - espresso martini with a spicy cayenne and chipotle kick. Loooved the flavors here; the vanilla and chocolate really came through, but beware if you don't love spicy, because it definitely is that. - Shishito Shiso Mojito - Pisco pineapple mojito with a chili kick. Very spicy, very delicious. The nuance of flavors of each of these cocktails was unmatched compared to most DC cocktail bars I've been to. The drinks are pricey but worth it. We stopped in early on a Friday evening and were immediately seated. It was starting to fill up by the time we left, but still a good amount of space left. Environment is nice as well. There's a library-esque lounge area in the back I hope to snag a seat in next time. read more

Have been really excited to try this place. Came on a Saturday night for a drink at the bar. The decor was a bit of a let down. The bar area looks really cute and dark and sexy in pictures but is more of a basic dimly lit bar. The bartender greeted me immediately and started me with some water while i looked over the menu. Ordered the Excuz-Ume which is a plum whiskey drink with banana, raisin, walnut bitters, lemon, and egg white. Overall I enjoyed my drink but couldnt pick up on any of the flavors except the raisin and lemon. The lemon overpowers the drink a bit so the whiskey and banana are lost. The drink was surprisingly super strong despite it being a sweeter drink. One was definitely enough for me super potent! The cocktails are pretty pricey, once you add in tip about $22. Not sure it was worth it but glad i gave it a try. Would be curious to give the other cocktails a taste. Its too hard to judge on one alone. The food looked and smelled amazing. Wow!!! I was absolutely blown away by my espresso martini, the decor, and the skilled bar staff. This place was jam packed, and for good reason. I highly recommend getting here early or making a reservation, if they're taken. My martini: atypical espresso martini. It is made with chipotle and cayenne, so it has a spicy after taste some people may not care for but I loved. It was a "one and done" for me, but I enjoyed every drop! It is expensive but I think a worthwhile experience if you're looking for something different and want to have a special night or even time with whomever you're with to just chat. The shelves of books added a warmth to the room and sparked conversation. My drink was called, "Window Shopping" which was described as a white Negroni. Wow! It was delicious. And a good description. I was way too busy enjoying my cocktails to take pictures of any :( My husband and I love cocktails and actually just finished watching that Neflix show 'Drink Masters', sooooo.... being the nerds we are, we saw that the staff were experimenting with fat washes and milk punches and all sorts of techniques we had just seen done in some stunning concoctions on TV... so of course, we were dying to try this place out. (Side note - for loving cocktails as much as we claim, it is embarrassing that these aren't exactly new techniques... makes me feel like a poser... so I will just say that I am a fan of the "classic" cocktail... yeah that's it...) We sat at the bar where my husband, being the social butterfly he is, immediately made friends with each and every bartender, meaning that he was tasting every new concoction that they were experimenting with - a scientific experiment of flavors, textures and aromatics that he thoroughly enjoyed. My mother-in-law and I stuck to menu items, and thought I don't recall the exact drinks, mine were mostly gin-based, well-balanced and flavorful. We enjoyed every minute of the 3 hours we sat there sipping drinks and eating bar snacks - the mushroom toast thing we ordered was excellent :) The one thing I would say that this place has going for it -- every server is a bartender and they rotate between dining room and the bar. This means that there is always something new to try, they are passionate about the craft and are willing to experiment. The one bartended made us a take on bailey's (they don't carry it), but their impersonation matched the flavor profile to a "T"! If that isn't skill... I don't know what is! All that said, they were a little in disarray with getting drink orders out, so I would go in with the mentality that you will most likely wait a little in between drinks. There is definitely room for improvement there, but as a whole, it was a blast, we had a great time and we will definitely back. read more

Don't come here expecting a full meal though (unless you get the burger which comes with potato wedges), otherwise you'll be hungry when you leave. I gave 4 stars because the bartenders were VERY strict with their cocktails. They would not allow me to get sugar on the rim of my margarita instead of salt (weird), and we could not order just a side of the potato wedges...they only come with the burger. read more
