I love an all day happy hour, but I wish Black Jack delivered more when it came to the food. Their happy hour schedule is a bit unusual, though it does run all day on Sundays. Black Jack sits above Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and we were ID checked just to head upstairs. The space itself is quite dim and a little worn, though the couches are comfortable. The servers were casual and friendly. Food took a while to arrive since the kitchen is shared with downstairs, but the drinks came out quickly and were generously poured. Note, there is a 4% credit card surcharge. *Oysters: require a minimum order of twelve during happy hour. We were not told the variety, and I would have appreciated more than a single slice of lemon for the table. The mignonette was quite diluted and lacked acidity, but the oysters themselves were plump and clean. If I had to guess, they leaned toward a West Coast variety with a slightly melon like finish. *House Spiced Potato Chips: came with a jalapeno ranch that lacked both heat and tang. The chips themselves were crisp with a nice onion and paprika flavor, but they deserved a dip with more personality and a stronger creamy or herby element. *Andouille Corn Dog Bites: three pieces came with pickles and mustard, but the batter was thick, oily, and overly chewy. The sausage added to the dense texture rather than balancing it. The mustard lacked sharpness, and the black pepper honey felt like an afterthought, making the batter soggier without adding much flavor. *Crush Burger: was on the smaller side and felt one dimensional for twelve dollars. It came with a few of the same chips, but the patty itself was under seasoned and tasted mostly like plain ground beef with a slice of American cheese. The toppings were simple, which made it come across like a less interesting version of a fast food burger. *Tamarindo Margarita: was refreshing and well suited for spring, almost like a spiked lemonade. The pour was generous and at eight dollars, it felt like one of the better values on the menu. Overall, the food was underwhelming with the exception of the oysters. Since the happy hour menu closely mirrors what is offered downstairs, this spot works better if you are looking for a quieter and slightly quicker option. I would call it a two and a half star experience, though I would round it up a bit thanks to the solid oysters, decent chips, and well priced drinks. read more

The food is also reasonably priced with decent oysters, burgers, etc. After 5:00 pm, they serve a regular menu with delicious fried chicken, gumbo, and jambalaya. I love their fried chicken, which is super well seasoned pieces of drumsticks (my favorite!) and thigh. The seafood gumbo is also well seasoned with good portions. Great customer service can be hard to come by and the bar tenders/waiters were very attentive, gave excellent recommendations, and were a good time! We lucked up on parking spaces as this area is notorious for poor parking availability. If you want a good drink, yummy eats, and good vibes, pay them a visit. It's great for groups or small parties. I am frequently in DC. I have been going here for over ten years when I visit. They have had the same happy hour deal for their steamed mussels since 2015 which are amazing. Even one of the bartenders has been there for several years and he always recognizes me when I come back. Their pizzas are also a great option. Had a great experience at Black Jack on Saturday night! Snagged a seat at the bar and spent an enjoyable evening with Eddy the bartender. He was extremely friendly, hardworking, attentive, and helpful! The downstairs Pearl Dive section was bustling, so the bouncer suggested we try upstairs. Vibes were a little quieter where we could sit and talk early afternoon. With dim lights, great music, and funky decor we knew were gonna have a good time. We grabbed some espresso martinis - these were SO good! When we told Eddy how much we loved them, he suggested we try his tequila infused martini! He explained how he soaks coffee beans for months and let us try - WOW! Every drink this man created was better than the next. As the night went on, we even tried the "mystery" drink which was a smoky dark liquor named "maybe the best drink of my life." We tried a few apps as well - a fan favorite were the lobster Rangoon! I was excited to try this unique twist, and did not regret it YUM. The cheese dip, blackened shrimp, and the pepperoni pizza were also great choices. I visited Black Jack on a Saturday night around 10 PM with three other ladies with the intention of eating dinner. We tried this place because one of my friends raved about the food, specifically the mussels. There was a gentleman checking ID upon arrival, and we headed upstairs to find a table. The walls were red with decor that included things you'd see in a card game. The environment was definitely your typical bar setting with pop and hip hop music playing and limited seating upstairs to dine in. Luckily, we were able to find a table near the rear section and bar. Unfortunately, we had to place orders for food at the bar, as there was no wait staff like in a traditional restaurant setting walking around to tend to tables. This made it challenging to order food because of the crowd, wait time to get to the bar, and noise level. I also had to provide my card to pay once the bartender put the food order in versus being able to pay at the end of my meal. I ordered the lobster ragoons and fried oysters initially, and decided to put in a separate order for an oyster po boy, since I enjoyed the appetizers. My friends ordered steamed mussels and gumbo. They really seemed to like the mussels and bread and thought the gumbo was decent (the friend that ordered gumbo had family from Louisiana, and was used to that type) However, my food was delicious and I LOVED the lobster ragoons. In hindsight, I would've tried to arrive a little earlier to eat at Black Jack, but loved the food. I also thought the music selection was pretty good, the restroom (The location had two individual unisex restrooms) was well stocked and clean. The bartender I had was literally just born. I don't think he has a clue what's going on. I ordered a margarita with tajin and the bartender kept asking me if I want a margarita with whiskey. When I repeatedly told him no he screamed at me "what the fuc* do you want" finally when he decided to make the drink he was pouring in soda water, sprite, and a bunch of other things that aren't in a margarita. He was extremely rude. He was some short guy with weird blue colored contacts -- do not order from him if you want even bare minimum service and I just recommend in general do NOT come here. This was a stop along our whiskey walk ! It was pretty crowded but we found a table where we could sit down and enjoy our food and drinks. Our new friend Damion- who we met during the whiskey walk- recommended we try the oysters from Black Jack! So we did ! Babe ordered a dozen oysters (2 of each of the following): WAR SHORE, BLUE POINT, CAPE MAY SALT, N JACK POINT, BELLE DU JOUR, CHUNU! We didn't know which oysters were which because the runners just dropped them off at the table and run away- so we couldn't really ask any questions. But we know we liked the ones to the left of the forks (if you're looking at the photo) the most ! they created a very delicious marinade for the oysters, which makes it very easy to dress them. I realize a lot of people don't know how to dress oysters that well... And that might be a reason they don't like them. You don't need much, but if you find a place with a good marinade, that makes everything so much easier! This is the place to go for a delicious marinade !! Although they didn't come to take the order, They did come by to clear the plates very quickly, which was a plus, and when they did that they took a drink order for my boyfriend. And he said he would come back for mine and never came back. This is the reason for the three. But the oysters were good, and our taste of whiskey at this location was good... That was the only drink I got they could've made more money how they took a drink water from me, but that's neither here nor there. Still don't know how to get to Tilt. Lol The Thyme to Drink cocktail is a tiki cocktail. It is tasty. I enjoyed the dance music they played. I wish I knew what station they were playing or the playlist. It seemed pointless to have the football game going on in the background since you couldn't hear it and the music was taking over. Came here for the happy hour with friends. Ended up being a pretty expensive bill so it wasn't quite good as of a deal as we thought it was going to be As part of the happy hour we ended up getting the margaritas which were just fine. The food itself was typical bar food and nothing amazing. They ended up giving us an extra pizza order which we didn't ask for but ended up on our bill. It was Mildy annoying but not sure why that happened I didn't want to take the trouble to send it back. The pizza's themselves were just okay. We also had mussels and they were just okay. Pretty racist space. I ordered two bottles of water and they misunderstood "vodka" and they blamed me for the order. The waiter criticized me and insulted me in front of me to all the other workers. I protested and they blackmailed me with kicking me out of the bar. To make it even worse after I left the bar they offered to my girlfriend a tequila shot and told her i was going to be kicked out. It was a traumatic experience and also a typical masculinity behavior of "we are over you". With no intentions of visiting this place, it was an after dinner (conveniently located) decision which ended up being a vibe. We sat at the bar, had a great drink and even better conversation. The decor is real interesting but cool, fun, and vibrant with a variety of seating options to accommodate any size party. Lengthwise, the establishment is a decent size but it's easily noticeable that by the location of the stairwell that it can get pretty congested and crowded at times. There are two unisex restrooms crammed into a tight space but serves the purpose. There is great size bar, good drinks, friendly bartenders.... but the music selection needs work. Since we just had dinner downstairs at Dive Oyster Bar, we didn't order any food so only spend limited time there... 3 stars seem appropriate. I'm a huge Black Jack fan. It's a fun, happening place with good food and drink. I like the exposed brick and big windows overlooking 14th Street, along with the dimly lit bar. Sunday afternoons are my favorite, due to their happy hour. I've also been on weeknights and most recently, a Saturday night. I was quite surprised by Saturday night--it was packed, with a line to get in. The crowd was really not my style, but the music was on point. Like, you could've had a dance party in here. I was surprised by that as well. Sundays and weeknights are fairly chill. I can't speak to their cocktails, but I do like the wine list, and tend stick to that. The pizza is great and oysters are fresh. The spicy shrimp and green goddess pizzas are my favorites. I want to try their chicken bucket. Finding the best happy hours in DC with my friends comes with a certain level of pressure, but Black Jack was a big win on a rainy Wednesday night! It is not terribly close to the Metro, but I don't mind a 15 minute walk to a delicious happy hour. With the bonus of serving happy hour throughout the restaurant and not just at the bar, I was excited before I even picked up a menu. The happy hour specials here were great for both food and drinks! I loved the Frosé (HH $8), and I could have enjoyed another easily on a warm day. For food, my friends and I split the Chips and Cheese (HH $7), Addie's Mussels (HH $11), and the Swine Lovers Pizza (HH $7). All of the food was delicious, although the Swine Lovers was too rich for me to have more than one slice. The cheese for the chips and cheese was delicious and the chips were salted perfectly. The mussels had a really unique sauce and were some of the biggest mussels I have ever seen. When we ran out of chips for our dip and bread for our mussel sauce, we were even given refills!!! There's one that says GOLF which is just kinda fun ( and it has interchanging relay) Deet 2: The small bathrooms remind you of being in like an old turn of the century hotel. What's the secret password? That's how I felt when entering the little black entrance door with no name or address attached. You DEFINITELY have to know where you're going because this lounge gets NO walk up business.. lol. Once you do figure out where you're at, you have to walk up about 30 steps and POW you're pleasantly surprised. This is a rustic spot with distressed hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. At that time there was a bocce ball court in the back, I'm not sure if that's changed since then. Regardless we always grab seats at the main bar. Food options here are limited, read: The menu oyster menu from downstairs . But the craft beer menu is solid. I rarely have anything that I haven't seen before, but it has happened. No matter where you were, you were running into people. The bathroom line curled into the main walk-thru to and from the bocce ball area, and you couldn't stand there waiting without getting constantly run over by people. Said differently, you couldn't get from one room to the next without running into people waiting for the bathroom. The bathroom was thankfully quite spacious once you were inside it, though. I organized an event for some fellow Yelpers to attend a happy hour here where about 17 showed up in total throughout the night. We had an amazing time, and really enjoyed the happy hour offers. I ordered 2 rose wines for $5 a piece, their 12 Barron Island oysters for $15, and the Swine pizza for half off the regular price. Everyone tried everyone's food. Overall everyone enjoyed it. The space is beautiful. I love the dim lighting, and the sexy ambiance of all the black and red. The offer bocce ball in one of the main areas, and then the other main part of the bar with multiple high tops and lounge seating for larger parties like where my group sat. They do split checks for large groups! This is a plus and made the transition very easy for dividing who got what. Our server... well, this is why I am knocking a star. I felt like she had a stick up her ass. A couple of people agreed with me. Maybe I am taking it too far, but I wasn't impressed with her attitude and didn't appreciate the 'tude provided. I WANT TO CALL her out, but I am trying to have more respect.... On the other hand -- Blake is awesome and a sweet heart. I met him on the way into the place. A local friend told me to meet her here for happy hour on a Thursday evening and this was my first visit. It's located in between Pearl Dive & Ghibellina. It's upstairs and u have to take a steep narrow stairway up. Doorman was friendly & funny. My friend was already seated at the bar, but because I brought 2 others with me, we switched to a high top table. The bar has a cool vibe and is dimly lit. Many people were enjoying the happy hour. We all had a couple of rounds of wine ($5 a glass). Wine was average, but servers were fast and never left a glass empty for long. This was a great spot to start off the evening. The bouncers here are quite frankly the worst people to ever exist. They assaulted my 5'1 friend, it was 1:45am and they screamed at me to leave while I was finishing a drink. My daughter has mild cerebral palsy and has had a gait since she started walking, The bouncer would not listen to her or her friends as they tried to explain the situation. We felt really bad after the waiter got us water but we all had to go back outside the restaurant, go next door, up the stairs and thats where Blackjack was. Really weird location if you don't look. Blackjack has a great bar with a good beer selection. They have great happy hour on Sundays too, I think domestic beer is half off. Not only are the drinks good but the food taste even better. Fried pickles are amazing, they are battered up and fried to perfection. The Earl is my favorite sandwich ever, its a BLT with a shit ton of bacon. What's better than that?! They also have pizza, sandwiches and salads on their menu. Haven't been here on a weeknight or weekend night though, only weekend in the day so we avoid the crowdedness.
