So I come here for lunch pretty much everyday but I guess Charlotte missed the memo. I tip very well and really don't like the way I was treated but the other people around me let's say got special treatment. I had to send my salad back because oh I forgot my steak was raw because she failed to ask me how I wanted it and after I told her I wanted my dressing on the side she so graciously forgot to put it in. I ordered birria tacos online for pickup inside the restaurant. I didn't realize there is a separate area for to-go order pickup but the host at the main entrance directed me to that area. There was no wait. I was helped right away. The order was ready at the ready time, the employee was friendly, the contents were secure, and the food was neatly packaged. The birria tacos were superb--well seasoned, not overly salty, cooked to perfection, a good balance of flavor, yellow plain rice and lemon wedge on the side, and a delicious sauce for dipping. My friends and I really enjoyed our experience here. We sat indoors right by the outdoor patio. Our group dined on a Tuesday where the taco Tuesday special was an extra taco with the 2 tacos that are already included. You can pick and choose whether you want the same kind of taco or something different. We ordered the Island Nachos, birria, Cabo San Lucas and Maui tacos. The consume broth was so rich and the Branzino was cooked perfectly. Everything was delicious and made fresh. The food came out very fast. Staff were friendly but mixed cocktails, such as the passion fruit margarita leaved B much to be desired (alcohol content-wise). Similarly the Martinique (Shrimp Burrito) entree was quite flavorless. The BELIZE $16.95Grilled marinated steak, grilled poblano peppers and onions, and Monterey Jack cheese in a grilled flour tortilla. There was enough food for me to take half of it home. The waitress was quick and efficient and the staff was very friendly. The only negative thing was it was difficult to get into the parking lot without getting someone to open the door from the restaurant, fortunately we were able to park in the street. Located inside a massive space once the site of a Ruby Tuesday, Surfside sells tacos and more. Most nights they have specials like on Mondays when kids eat free or buy two, get one free Taco Tuesdays. If you love shrimp, get the "Nevis" on flour tortillas. They are large tacos that come with jumbo shrimp and side of really good yellow rice. Service is attentive and prompt. read more

I've been going to Surfside since their original Glover Park location. I typically only get takeout now that they have moved farther up Wisconsin. I've been visiting Surfside's various establishments for over 9 years. Surfside is just a solid restaurant for brunch, lunch, and dinner. I like their Tenleytown location because they have parking so it makes it easier to meet up with friends who drive. I love their tiki drinks, and I haven't tried anything on their menu I haven't liked. My favorites to order are: Martinique (shrimp) burrito, O'ahu seared tuna bowl, Nevis (shrimp) tacos, Buck Island (salmon) salad, and Belize (steak) quesadilla. For appetizers, I LOVE their queso and Island Nachos. I wouldn't order the Bermuda Triangle because the bowls with the salsa and queso are just so small, it's not worth it. My favorite cocktail there is their Mai Tai. Makes me feel like I'm on vacation. :) Definitely a solid casual restaurant to visit. I'm also a fan of their taco stand in Dupont Circle. read more

This place doesn't even pretend the fee is paid to workers (it's to "offset labor costs")--so they are just stealing tips from employees anytime anyone reduces the tip (because labor costs are covered by that amount) accordingly. Surfside Tenleytown is a gem. The food is really good, the service we've received has always been great, and you can't beat the beachy Tex Mex ambience. It's a large airy space with garage-style doors that can be rolled up in good weather to essentially turn the entire restaurant into open air dining. There's also a back room for private events and a large patio, which has plastic curtains and heat lamps for colder weather. The menu is all solid, with bright flavors. I loved the Malibu tacos for a vegetarian entree, and the kids' entrees were both sizeable enough to take home for leftovers -- which they happily ate both days. It's family friendly; bustling but not overly loud, good kids menu options, and coloring place mats. There is a parking garage that I think is free for Surfside patrons after 5:00 pm but we've always grabbed street parking pretty easily. read more

Had a good experience at Surfside the other day. I have frequented their other locations, but this was my first time sitting for table service. It took a while for someone to come and take our order, but once the ball got rolling, we had a really enjoyable meal! We tried the Nevis (grilled shrimp tacos) the Cabo San Lucas (steak tacos) and the Birria tacos. All were delicious, but the Nevis was my favorite. The steak tacos had good flavor, but the meat was tough, so I probably wouldn't order those again. I also had a spicy margarita that was not for the weak. I will give them one more chance and try something with what I hope will be seasoned meat. This is probably my favorite taco place in the DC area (though the lengua taco from Taco Bamba gets an honorable mention). We've ordered to-go orders several times and they are always neatly packaged. My go-to is the Antigua (fried rock shrimp) tacos entree ($16 for two) which also comes with a side of fluffy yellow rice. I like the texture of the fried shrimp, the crunchy slaw, creamy green goddess avocado dressing, and acidity of a freshly squeezed lime. There are some consistency issues with the order - sometimes it comes with two tortillas per taco, while other times I have only received one. It used to also come with a small side of frijoles, but it looks like they recently cut that from the menu. I enjoy their crunchy tortilla chips but they are on the greasy side. I actually prefer Chipotle's chips and guac over Surfside's because I prefer Chipotle's stronger lime flavor. The last time we ordered, it was Taco Tuesday, so they threw in a free Cabo San Lucas (steak) taco with my entree! I generally avoid steak tacos because the steak can be too chewy, but I was pleasantly surprised by how tender the steak was. The price points can be a little hard to swallow for tacos, but it's pretty consistent with other DC prices, and the tacos are delicious! read more

A favorite spot to hang out for my friends. The location isn't perfect but there is a small parking lot on Van Ness down the hill a bit from the restaurant. Plenty of street parking across the street too. Taco Tuesdays are by far the best time to go. You get a free extra taco of your choice when you order a taco entree. I'm a big fan of the Nevis but I have enjoyed every type of taco I have ordered here. For me, the only happy hour food that's worth it is the pork belly sliders. Delicious for sure. Personally I'm not a fan of the chips but I know friends that like them. I need a higher salt to tortilla ratio. Although I don't drink, my friends have complimented the house special drinks including their frozen ones. The space is great. A big patio area when the weather is nice, and they enclose it when it's not. The seating area inside the bar itself is smaller but they do have a private room too. I'm also a fan of a separate area for take out food. Very efficient for sure. As for the service, I would recommend getting table service instead of the bar. The bar area is generally crowded while the tables have rarely been full when I have been here. We have become regulars so I'm sure I'll be back soon! read more

I love their vegan/vegetarian options and the nachos are always a hit for me and the awesome thing is some of the locations are 24 hours so you don't have to limit Eating at Surfside to just taco Tuesdays or just a lunchtime quick fix.
