Thurs., 7/16/26 ... quick outing with my daughter and a few others. I soooo wanted to enjoy this place because my brother has repeatedly raved about it. Sadly, I'm not a fan (yet). Cute, trendy, safe, family-friendly restaurant/bar. Clearly a neighborhood fav so my opinion will, undoubtedly, not be a popular one. #SorryNotSorry #TruthHurts We had subpar, sloww service from a slightly unpleasant server. The trivia pursuit game in action sounded super fun. Next time, maybe I'll just sit at the bar. The chips were decent, our margaritas were forgettable, the pina colada may have been better frozen (server never even offered that option); buttt the quesadillas were impressive. Pics attached. The food is good value, and the restaurant is slightly above a fast-casual place. I would have given it four stars, but for the service. Although the waitress was very nice, she was totally inattentive and failed to deliver one of the sides. I ordered birria tacos online for pickup inside the restaurant. I didn't realize there is a separate area for to-go order pickup but the host at the main entrance directed me to that area. There was no wait. I was helped right away. The order was ready at the ready time, the employee was friendly, the contents were secure, and the food was neatly packaged. The birria tacos were superb--well seasoned, not overly salty, cooked to perfection, a good balance of flavor, yellow plain rice and lemon wedge on the side, and a delicious sauce for dipping. My friends and I really enjoyed our experience here. We sat indoors right by the outdoor patio. Our group dined on a Tuesday where the taco Tuesday special was an extra taco with the 2 tacos that are already included. You can pick and choose whether you want the same kind of taco or something different. We ordered the Island Nachos, birria, Cabo San Lucas and Maui tacos. The consume broth was so rich and the Branzino was cooked perfectly. Everything was delicious and made fresh. The food came out very fast. A very tasty restaurant in Tenleytown DC! My friend and I devoured the dip trio and the enchiladas. I also loved that they gave us a water pitcher to start the night! Stacking up on fees. Watch out for the 3% surcharge on all checks. They do have the legally obligated small print but obviously want to lure you in with lower prices. I didn't like the deceitful nature. Decent place. Very chill atmosphere. I enjoyed my St. John sandwich! We also had the Tres Leches and I really liked the cake, but they put this fake strawberry corn syrup thing on top. Either put a real strawberry or don't put anything. Staff were friendly but mixed cocktails, such as the passion fruit margarita leaved B much to be desired (alcohol content-wise). Similarly the Martinique (Shrimp Burrito) entree was quite flavorless. Salsa galore and a spare cilantro pesto sauce I had handy (from a purchase ) added depth to the what could've been a well grilled shrimp & avocado burrito. After an afternoon of estate sale shopping, my friend and I stopped for a lovely lunch at Surfside. Being a beautiful day, we sat outside and took in the sunshine. I enjoyed. The BELIZE $16.95Grilled marinated steak, grilled poblano peppers and onions, and Monterey Jack cheese in a grilled flour tortilla. There was enough food for me to take half of it home. The waitress was quick and efficient and the staff was very friendly. The only negative thing was it was difficult to get into the parking lot without getting someone to open the door from the restaurant, fortunately we were able to park in the street. So I come here for lunch pretty much everyday but I guess Charlotte missed the memo. I tip very well and really don't like the way I was treated but the other people around me let's say got special treatment. I had to send my salad back because oh I forgot my steak was raw because she failed to ask me how I wanted it and after I told her I wanted my dressing on the side she so graciously forgot to put it in. I waited for her to come back to me but I had to walk back up to the course tee and because they know me the nice man took it and had it remade. With larger gatherings, we often opt for takeout. It is more comfortable to enjoy the great food at home. Some of our favorites include the Aruba Salad, Tahiti Salad, Pork Belly Sliders, and Street Corn. For larger groups, the Fajita Box is an excellent choice. If you're a fan of seafood, Surfside's grilled shrimp dishes feature large, perfectly cooked shrimp. Parking Tips: Set your GPS to 3977 Van Ness Street NW, Washington, DC 20016 This is a small surface lot which is quite busy. The restaurant validates free one hour parking for the garage at 3959 Van Ness Street NW. Weekdays: The first hour is free with validation; $2 per hour afterward. Located inside a massive space once the site of a Ruby Tuesday, Surfside sells tacos and more. Most nights they have specials like on Mondays when kids eat free or buy two, get one free Taco Tuesdays. If you love shrimp, get the "Nevis" on flour tortillas. They are large tacos that come with jumbo shrimp and side of really good yellow rice. Service is attentive and prompt. read more

I've been visiting Surfside's various establishments for over 9 years. Surfside is just a solid restaurant for brunch, lunch, and dinner. I like their Tenleytown location because they have parking so it makes it easier to meet up with friends who drive. I love their tiki drinks, and I haven't tried anything on their menu I haven't liked. My favorites to order are: Martinique (shrimp) burrito, O'ahu seared tuna bowl, Nevis (shrimp) tacos, Buck Island (salmon) salad, and Belize (steak) quesadilla. For appetizers, I LOVE their queso and Island Nachos. I wouldn't order the Bermuda Triangle because the bowls with the salsa and queso are just so small, it's not worth it. My favorite cocktail there is their Mai Tai. Makes me feel like I'm on vacation. :) Definitely a solid casual restaurant to visit. I'm also a fan of their taco stand in Dupont Circle. read more

I82 surcharge in 2025. Just raise your prices a measly 3% or charge a service fee in lieu of tip and stop insulting the intelligence of your patrons. You guys already managed to lobby the city electeds to disregard the will of the voters. Anyone else ever notice it's the "hospitality group" establishments and never the actual mom and pop restaurants they purport to be fighting against DC voters on behalf of that are charging these dishonest and manipulative fees? This is about investors, not workers. This place doesn't even pretend the fee is paid to workers (it's to "offset labor costs")--so they are just stealing tips from employees anytime anyone reduces the tip (because labor costs are covered by that amount) accordingly. Surfside Tenleytown is a gem. The food is really good, the service we've received has always been great, and you can't beat the beachy Tex Mex ambience. It's a large airy space with garage-style doors that can be rolled up in good weather to essentially turn the entire restaurant into open air dining. There's also a back room for private events and a large patio, which has plastic curtains and heat lamps for colder weather. The menu is all solid, with bright flavors. I loved the Malibu tacos for a vegetarian entree, and the kids' entrees were both sizeable enough to take home for leftovers -- which they happily ate both days. It's family friendly; bustling but not overly loud, good kids menu options, and coloring place mats. There is a parking garage that I think is free for Surfside patrons after 5:00 pm but we've always grabbed street parking pretty easily. read more
