The only reason I'm giving two stars is the nice woman that politely greeted me this afternoon as I walked in the store and thanked me for coming in when I exited the store. Other than that, waste of time. I went in thinking since this is a kitchen store, they should have a mold for an English steamed pudding. I looked around and as usual for this particular Sur la table store, not much inventory. I understand the company is in BK, but reorganization. Hopefully, they can successfully pull out of it and start stocking their stores again. When asked if I was finding what I needed, I said no, and I explained what I was looking for. This person apparently is an instructor for the cooking classes. She led me to a corner where baking pans etc. were shelved. I didn't see the item needed. She pointed to souffle dishes and said this is what they use. But they didn't have any appropriately sized. I again explained I was wanting a mold with a center ring. She very matter-of-factly said I know what they are. I thanked her for her time. I then put the few smaller items I had selected to purchase back and exited the store. For the last time I might add. I have lived in the Houston area for about three years now. Prior, I lived in Seattle Wa. I shopped at the Sur la Table store in Pikes Market as it was six blocks from my apartment. I also shopped at the Kirkland Wa store, were I had enjoyed many cooking classes. My set of All-Clad cookware and most of my Le Creuset pieces came from either the Seattle or Kirkland stores. The staff at both were extremely competent, helpful and courteous. I also had good experiences in the San Francisco store located in the Ferry Building complex. I have gone out to the other Houston store in the City Centre a few times where the experiences were better. At this point, Sur La Table needs to put the River Oaks store on Gray St. out of its misery. I know I'm done there for good.... read more

Today was our 2nd cooking class here. Each time it has been well organized and the instructors clear and speak loudly. Our first class was paella and 2nd fresh made pasta. During the class the instructor pays attention to each group making sure they are on task and things look good. IMO the class turns out how you approach it. If a sauce or dish isn't looking right then speak up. Also, they give you 10% off anything you buy that day, your whole basket not just 1 item. We look forward to attending more classes. read more

Took a cooking class this past weekend. It was phenomenal! Chef Nick taught us a delicious Middle Eastern feast! The staff helping him and including himself was so nice and professional. This was my first cooking class at Sur La Table. My friend and I enjoyed learning small tips and even how to properly use certain knives. My favorite part was being able to use certain kitchen tools that I never knew existed like the garlic silicone roller. You roll the garlic with your hand in this silicone roller and all the peel comes off! Lol. I will definitely be purchasing one and coming back for more classes with Chef Nick! read more

My wife and I took a cooking class and it was an amazing experience. We love to cook, but our skills are.. to say the least.... lacking. We learned how to make a delicious Italian meal. We started with prepping an ice cream, then a nice salad, but the best part was learning to make fresh pasta. Our instructor (I feel bad, but I can't remember her name) guided us on how to prep the dough, roll it out, put it through the machine and answered all of our questions, as many as we had. Her sous chefs were amazing as well. Overall, we had a great experience and had a wonderful dinner that I am proud to say we made ourselves! read more

The wife and I came for our anniversary, for something different and overall we enjoyed our time together, but the instructor was just okay, and his helpers were just okay. There were about six couples and during the class the instructor seemed to pay attention to one side of the class, and when we did get his attention, he seemed to be kurt with us, but fortunately we had a good couple with us and we worked it out. The wife and I enjoyed the BYOB, and meeting new people, and our dinner turned out pretty good. Our meal was gumbo, shrimp and grits, and for dessert bananas foster, overall a good meal. Would like to return, but hopefully we would have a different instructor with assistants with better attitudes. read more

I can't believe how bad this online shopping experience could be with them. Worst nightmare during a time that you can get almost anything online the next day with a simple click. First of all, this father's day sale event is a huge scam to customers. They literally raised the price by 50% and then dropped it to attract orders. False advertisement! How did I find out after I ordered from them? You literally just need to search the brand they carry using Google. I ended up ordering from the official website of the brand because Sur La Table's father's day arrival has not even been shipped after a week. On top of that, their after-sale price is literally the original price from the brand's official website. And the band's website is having a holiday event too, I paid 60 dollars less to get the same thing. Such a waste of my trust, my time and money! Personally, I will never buy anything from them again, such a bummer, I kinda like their local stores. Hope this honest review will save you some trouble too! read more

My husband and I decided to try a cooking class for our anniversary, the class went so fast that he did not feel like learning, according to the covid restriction the class was for 8 people but when they arrived there were 16, in a space so small that we did not see it. that the chef did. they took us out in 1 hour and 15 minutes. definitely not recommended. we went to city center location. read more

First and foremost, I love Sur La Table. I can literally spend an entire hour just browsing at all the cool kitchenware and fancy espresso machines. In fact, that's what I did today! Fanciness doesn't come without a price, but price doesn't always come with quality. What's disappointing is that I noticed a lot of the items sold here are made in China, yet cost the same as something made in India, Japan, France, Germany, or USA. Take for instance the Rösle Ladle with Pouring Rims. The 7.8 ounce version costs a nominal value of $40 (or $43.30 after tax) and yet its still made in China. There are positive attributions about the ladle that make up part to the steep price such as the 18/10 stainless steel material (18% chromium and 10% nickel content), but even then manufacturing in China is dirt cheap and does not cost but a fraction of the price to build. In comparison, I can find an 8-oz. stainless steel ladle on Amazon for $7.25 plus free shipping, plus made in India. To compare a similar build, Amazon also shows an All-Clad T109 stainless steel ladle for $23.95 (made in China but more appropriately priced). With all this said, just keep in mind of where something is made from and ask yourself if it's worth the cost. In my opinion, I rather spend a little more on something that's made in a country I can be proud of (USA!) and/or a country with a solid background in craftsmanship. If you don't mind where it's made and just want something cheap to use, I suggest shopping at Wal-mart and saving yourself some extra cash. Sur La Table falls under the category of "Coupon or Bust". Similar to Best Buy, Kohls, REI, Bed Bath and Beyond and department stores, it might not be wise to shop here without a sale or coupon. Items are always marked higher to adjust for sales or coupons. Always search your smart phone for coupons before you check-out. I saved 20 percent today by doing so! I purchased something for a friend as a gift and noticed it had a crease on the box so I tried to do a quick exchange at the counter. The manager told the cashier (in a stern manner) I had to do a refund for it so I ended up just keeping it. What a hassle. Swapping it out should have been seamless since each box isn't unique and has the same UPC code. I haven't even walked out with the box yet. Other than that, help is always around the corner. I was asked at least three times by different associates if I needed any help. They are all very knowledgeable and knows the store layout well. Just remember their name and who helped you so that way you can let the cashier know later. I think they get an incentive when they help you. read more

I've taken multiple classes here: Homemade Christmas Treats, Spring Macarons, Homemade Ravioli, just to name a few. The classes are well-done. The recipes are correct and tested through to produce excellent results. At every station, the necessary equipment is provided, and all of the ingredients are measured out in advance to speed things along. In most classes, you'll share stations with others. The classes and instruction are technique-driven, with lots of tips and tricks along the way. I've always come away with something new to try or do at home. By the end of class, there's more than enough food to go around. Sur La Table provides water, tea, and coffee. If wining and dining is your thing, remember to BYOB. read more

I have to admit that after perusing their online site for quite some time now, I was a little disappointed by their actual store. I just thought that there would be more fun stuff. Not that there wasn't plenty there to keep me busy and tempt me--but I'm an impulse buyer and I ended up leaving the store empty handed. For Mother's Day this year, I bought both of the moms this cool oil and vinegar pouring art piece--sounds stupid, it was awesome. Evidently. Both the moms gushed over how fun and artsy it was, but how practical it was to take apart the glass into separate sections. When I went in yesterday, I was hoping to see something similar and splurge on an unnecessary gadget for my own kitchen. (Un?)luckily for me, they had mostly practical items all around their store and I only wavered in the knife section. There was a nice sale section, but nothing too impressive there--and the discounts were negligible. I'll be honest, this place will have any type of useful kitchen gadget you could want--and the prices weren't that over priced. I did get to peek into the classroom they use for the cooking classes and I was glad to see it wasn't some huge auditorium and they kept it nice and intimate. The prices for these classes are on par with what you'd find at Central Market and they had quite a bit going on for kids during their summer school. In the end, I'll head back when I'm looking for a really nice knife, but otherwise, I think I'll just order from their online site. read more

I bought the most adorable set of Christmas ornaments at SLT this year, chocolate covered strawberries, pickles, asparagus- etc etc. All food themed, with a couple of sommeliers and chefs thrown in. So cute, and they were on sale for 60% off! That's the main reason I go to Sur La Table- for their sales. My bf got a knife bag for $29 (originally $65) and they have a 15% discount program for those who work in the restaurant/catering/drink industry- just show a pay stub or business card and you're in. They also have one of the best Le Creuset stocks (multiple bright colors, multiple sizes) I've seen in Houston, along with the look alikes from Mario Batali and other companies. Their staff is always very helpful, searching for a certain food chopper or wire cheese slicer when we can't find them, and always offers a basket for the little kitchen tools you walk around stockpiling before hitting the register. Most weekends they also have an espresso company in store making drinks (yum), and a kitchen in the back that's available for cooking classes. Sur la Table has been a favorite shop of mine for years. I have never enjoyed Williams-Sonoma, but I always find what I need at SLT. The clearance section is chaotic, but if you are willing to dig, you can find a great deal. The cooking classes here are always fantastic. I have taken about eight or so and they never disappoint. I do prefer the old format where they brought in chefs to teach each class instead of having instructors who work at the store, that kept things more interesting. The classes are hands on and you really get to do a lot. I do find that they always run long, so be prepared for a 2 to 3 hours of cooking. You can bring a bottle of wine in to enjoy while you cook. read more

I and my girlfriend just spent $22 on knife sharpening at the West Gray Sur la Table. Our Chicago Cutlery knives are cheap, but they will take a good edge, and are supposed to be easy to sharpen. I used to live with a scissor and knife sharpener, so I know what a good sharpening should look like. It looks like they just ground these sloppily on a rotary wheel. Clearly no work with a whetstone. 3 of the knives have nicks, and my girlfriend's Chef's knife now has a reverse curve on it where the blade used to be flat. I guess they only treat $100+ import knives with respect. I'm going to buy a stone and sharpen them myself next time. read more

They will help you find what you need & offer advice & recommendations on products. Their classes are a lot of fun and the instructors teach you the techniques as well as the recipes. Everything for your kitchen, except the kitchen sink. If you love browsing through kitchen and dining supply stores, as I do, then this is the place for you. A great selection of top brands. Knives, pots, pans, tools of every shape imaginable--even if your thoughts trend toward diabolical. Prep dishes, baking trays, and dishes, dining ware, place settings. The list never ends. In fact, it works against them a little bit, because finding things is a bit difficult. Parking is a challenge--it's best to come when the crowds aren't swarming over the shopping center. The cooking classes are a load of fun, and well planned. I did a class there that was an homage to Julia Child on her 100th birthday. At this location I was not a fan of the person who greeted us which was also the person who check this out she was not friendly and we felt as if we were not welcome or she was trying to get us out of the store, we are paying customers and did purchase the items we were looking for. I love this place, and that's why I stay away as much as possible. If you enjoy the culinary arts, then this place will be heaven to you. Not kidding...you'll walk through the doors, hear angels singing and playing harps, and then realize that there is any and everything you could possibly need (and not need) for the kitchen. Last night I went there with two things that I needed and the knowledgeable staff was able to point me in the right direction as well as give their advice on what was best. I had to make a strong effort NOT to buy the adorable mini spoonula, the turtle beer bottle opener (but seriously man...you put it on your pint glass, pour your beers over it, and its supposed to make the perfect black & tan...C'MON!) and lots of other adorable things that I do not have room for in my overstocked kitchen. But I really do need them all!! Seriously though, if you need specialty things and other items to put sur ta table this is the best place to find them although I'm sure if you do your homework you could find a better price (hence the 4 stars). I recently took a 3 hour knife skills class where a 6" Shun chef knife was included in the tuition. Totally rad class IMO and I got a rockin' 6" Japanese steel blade to practice with and take home with me all for $100! That's good value in my book. The class was great. Set in the store's teaching kitchen, our chef instructor and her assistants provided us with some great demonstration and application lessons in various cutting techniques ranging from simple dice, mince and rondelle to the ever elegant supreme and ciffonade cut. There were more cuts shown and practiced too. Overall the class was fun, entertaining and I learned a lot of good stuff to immediately practice! I'm looking forward to another one. I recommend taking a class with a good friend. That's what I did and it made for incredible bonding time and good sober fun. Beware! You may be tempted to spend loads of cash after class. Sur la Table has great items in the store and if you love to cook, it's best to either realize your weakness and feed your need for more cookware or put your blinders on and immediately leave the store. There's always something that you need at Sur. To make things better, if you take a class you get a coupon for 10% off anything in the store good for multiple uses during a week after your class. I LOVE browsing the store to find some gadget or kitchen accessory I need (or mostly don't need). I found the cutest mini cupcake papers and matching toppers for a bridal shower on clearance (!!!) when I was there last. But, my favorite thing is their cooking classes. I have taken at least 5 classes in the past year. The date nights are super fun. Bring a bottle of wine (no corkage - I'm looking at you Urban Chef...) and you'll share your station with one other couple as you learn how to make a full meal start to finish. The food is usually pretty simple - things I could actually make at home if I put in a little effort - but delicious. I always learn something new. The knife skills class was incredible too. It's not "fun" in the way that date night or girls night is, but I picked up a whole new set of skills that I use all the time now. Same with pasta making. It's always a fun night out and best of all I don't have to do any of the cleanup! read more

Sur la Table is a great store for the home cook or baker that like to get fancy sometimes. It is an upscale cooking store. Especially for baking, they have many obscure baking things that you can not find anywhere else unless you go to some cake warehouse out in the 'burbs. Go to Williams Sonoma when you want to pick out china or silverware and maybe a few doo-hickeys. Sur la Table is good for the following: *Great selection of KNIVES. Every cook needs one good chef knife and I recommend Japanese. In my opinion, for simple home cooking you can get away with a good chef's knife and a paring knife. (and perhaps a long serrated knife for breads things, but that doesn't necessarily have to be the best quality) *great selection of everything for BAKING from cookie cutters to different size pans to icing paints, marzipan, fondant, etc. * Their COOKING CLASSES look great *great selection of DOO-HICKEYS for the kitchen, for chopping and preparing anything. The best selection in town for this kind of stuff. ***Note for home bakers: splurge and get the more expensive cake pans (not the Sur la Table brand-those are a little cheaper but they are crap), the heavy aluminum ones. Your cakes will always come out even, not with a mountain in the middle and they are easy to clean. read more

Oh.. my... lord... this is kitchen supply heaven! They have anything and everything you could ever need for your kitchen. Many different types of pots and pans, knives. Every type of kitchen accessory you could imagine, banana cutters, mortar and pestles, serving spoons, BBQ equipment, ect... There is also tons of baking supplies and several plate settings. Of course everything is of the highest quality. They also have cooking classes that seem really great. The cooking classroom is quiet large. I haven't had a chance to take one yet. I have to keep myself from going too often because I will always find another kitchen gadget I MUST have. But when there are sale signs in the windows... I just can't help myself. read more

Four Stars because I want to be greeted everywhere I go. During my trip to La Madeleine and Macaron by Patisse, I decided to stop by Sur La Table. Recently I have been immersed in the Downton Abbey drama, which led me to one of my favorite blogs, which led me to an awesome pastry called a popover; come to find out, I'd had it a couple of months ago at Ouisi's Table. I am a fanatic of bready things (LOVE BREAD PUDDING), I decided I wanted to make these at home, maybe for Mother's Day Brunch for my mom. I soon realized, I did not have the proper pan for them-I didn't want to use a muffin pan, it just destroys their popoverness. So I walk into Sur La Table for the first time ever, I always pass by, but I never needed anything from here. I'm not greeted as I meander my way around the tightly stocks bakers racks full of merchandise. I didn't mind the eclectic nature of the merchandising. I then find my way to the baking section, picked out the popover pan I liked, and walked to the register. I was THEN greeted as I was walking up. I checked out, signed up for the email list, and received my merchandise. The store is awesome and amazing, I will definitely return for a few more kitchen gadgets and place settings that I came across. This place is addictive. Every time I go I find things I want to get. They are masters as putting out very interesting displays that draw you in and make you want the new gadgets. I've also taken two classes here. The most recent was gluten free baking. The class was excellent. The recipes are great, the practice kitchen is well stocked, and the teacher was excellent. Great fun. My Bride and I attended a Jacques Pepin cooking class themed on Thanksgiving favorites. We were there along with a few "Bechtel-ites". I cannot say we learned anything new but we did enjoy ourselves. The Chef helped us create a Mache salad with pecans, pears and goat cheese, roasted turkey with standard stuffing and gravy and topped off with an apple tart with almond filling. I do believe we will repeat the experience the next time they offer something similar. read more

I love Sur La Table. I could put a hug dent in my bank account in here. My husband and I went to exchange a gift the other day, and we went up and down every aisle trying to make up our mind. There are so many things in here I didn't even know existed or that I could want! They even have cooking classes! I am totally going to check into those and see what they are like. Variety of colors, brands, sizes, and prices on kitchen items. The employees are really helpful, they seem to love what they do. The location of this being in River Oaks shopping center does mean that parking is a bit tough to get though, so be aware. I'm a huge fan of stores like Sur la Table and Williams & Sonoma. I was in a huge need of tea filters and I had trekked to a lot of different stores looking for them. Random ethnic grocery stores, as well as big named groceries didn't carry them, and so I was off to the one place I knew had them. Sur la Table. There's one in River Oaks, and one in Sugar Land. The River Oaks one (surprisingly) had bountiful parking on a Saturday afternoon at around 2:30 pm. Maybe it's because the weather was ridiculously hot today and nobody wanted to go out. Either way, I walked in and almost instantly found what I was looking for. Amazon price comparison: $6.05 (Amazon) vs $6.95 (Sur la Table). I'm willing to pay the extra $0.90 for instant gratification. I like these kind of stores because I can get lost in them for quite a long time. Their wood cooking-ware always feels comfortable in your hands, not bulky or rough like some other cooking utensils that I've purchased from various other stores in the past. I think some of the stuff they sell is completely ridiculous. Such as the silicone cylinder that you put garlic in, and then roll, and ::poof:: your garlic has lost it's outer skin. Seriously? Just hit the clove with a knife, and you've done the same exact thing. read more

Debated between 3 and 4 stars for this place. Yes, it is pricey, however they have a TON of stuff. Things that you can't really find anywhere else. Need multi-sized and colored knife guards? They got em! Need silicone-lined omelet spatulas? Yup! (Btw, these are pretty much my favorite item in my kitchen. Holy moly. Love.) They had some nice creme brulee dishes on sale, I really doubt I'm going to make it anytime soon... but juuuuuust in case, I picked up 4. =) There was also a Nespresso rep there giving out free coffee. It was too late in the evening, or else I would've definitely taken advantage of this! Staff here is super knowledgeable. My gf loves this place and we are here all the time. We usually buy on sale items because the sales are so good. The selection is fantastic and the sales staff highly informative. Items we can't get at Bed and Bath we can get here for sure. My best experience was with the knives. A couple of years ago I decided to get a good set of knives and shopped all around. The knife expert here did help me clarify my choices and we got a set that we think feels great to hold. They also have knife sharpening deals every so often that we come back for. My gf has taken some of the cooking classes here. I have not so I cannot comment personally but she did enjoy them and is trying to pressure me to go to one with her. Parking is tough. Forget parking in front, park around back because there is usually plenty of space and the valet reservation doesn't kick in until later. read more

I usually get my utensils, pots, pans and knives at department stores, you know because of the price, but the quality suffers. Then, my wife told me about this place. We stopped by just to browse and my jaw dropped, pricy? yes, but the quality...oh the quality, French, American, Japanese and Italian made kitchen products. For many years and for all the years to come, I have spent my hard-earned buck$ at SLT for the following reasons: (1) quality of merchandise and service after the sale, (2) knowledgeable, helpful staff, (3) the best selection of kitchen fundamentals such as knives, cookware, bakeware, gourmet items in addition to the 'frills' and decorative items, (4) great sales on things like Staub and Le Creuset! and (5) the feeling of welcome and recognition every time I visit. This store far and away surpasses all other gourmet and cooking shops this side of the pond. Then there's the coffee...yum! If you're not a foodie, you still owe yourself a treat to a very special store. Buy a little something for a friend who cooks for you. If you're a foodie, GO. Enjoy! read more
