The employees were helpful, one of them offered to make me an espresso which was quite tasty and powerful. The two employees on the floor kept disappearing and I had to keep calling them over to assist me to find Something or to wrap up a gift for a nominal charge). I have purchased items from this Sur La Table over a span of about the past four years, but this past holiday season has made me rethink doing business with this brick and mortar location. In the past, I've bought holiday mugs, plates and aprons. One of the mugs I bought chipped really easily, which was disappointing. The apron is OK, but the colors have faded a bit. My latest purchase was a holiday mug, which is beautiful, and seems to have held up over a short period of time. Pitting Sur La Table against Williams Sonoma, comparative analysis-wise, I would say the latter wins in terms of customer service, selection and shopping experience. This past December, when I visited Sur La Table, the hot chocolate sample I tried was ice cold. Sure, marshmallows were available, but who wants cold hot chocolate? Williams Sonoma seemed to have a much better approach in this regard. Another issue with Sur La Table is the over-emphasis on cooking classes, to the detriment of customers' shopping experience on the floor. Oftentimes, there is no one around to help shoppers should they have questions. I had a question about a gingerbread mug, and the woman working the station nearby behaved like an unhinged moron, making wild gestures towards different parts of the store. She couldn't make a coherent statement to save her life, but communicated via strange hand gestures (Haha!). Unfortunately, she never answered my question. I did find the cashier who later helped me at checkout to be friendly and professional, but I think I'll just stick to mail order for Sur La Table...or just go elsewhere. Not impressed. And it would be a good idea for management to respond to all the negative reviews this location has received so there can be some improvement and upgrading of the shoppers' experience. read more

This location in particular tends to fall over themselves trying to help, but never pushy, more like socially conversive yet technically omniscient, they know or find out all my insane questions...which I have a lot of given all the culinary nuances; they make me feel comfortable in all my at home cooking adventures! The cooking classes are constantly ongoing and there are a huge variety you can attend like for kids or occasions or cultural foods, I had an amazing time and learned many new things and was surprised I could cook that well, I'd say they helped my confidence plus were very inspirational. One thing that's always a must are the free coffee samples from the most expensive espresso machines, I may take advantage a bit too much there sorry! One particular item I got here that I use 100% of time are the epicurean cutting boards since they're composite paper (used to make skate parks back in 90s) so no microplastics & they're super tough and washable (still like hand wash only) & have wells & silicone corners for no slip. We used to only shop here, but now we take kitchen-classes too (because it's not all for cooking)! We signed up for "Knife-Skills" class when our ceramic knife was chipped and we were arguing about what sort of knife to purchase next (and how much to spend). We decided to take a class to help us decide. And, what a lovely class with Chef Nick! I was made aware of some my knife-habits when cutting (just holding a knife, in what I thought was natural, but apparently it was dangerous), how to best chop and dice using a sharp knife, how to cut a bell-pepper (wow!), and the three types of knives we all truly need vs the knife-sets lots of merchants try to sell you. Since taking this class, my husband and I have been so inspired that we're cooking more, bought a knife from Sur La Table, and are definitely saving up to purchase more higher-end knives (now that we see a clear difference in their value). It was also eye-opening to see how to truly sharpen a knife, what angle to use, and how to best manage burrs (sp?) on a chef's knife. They take out all the boring work like dicing vegetables and measuring out everything, and focus on teaching you the unique aspects for preparing your dish. So fun!! Took the "pasta from home class" and have been making pasta from scratch ever since. Had a small issue during the class where the measured proportions were off but the instructors were very calm and able to help whip up a new batch no problems! Got some awesome recipes out of it and a super fun afternoon. BYOB and we're able to finish a bottle of wine while cooking! Haha would definitely recommend and a cute date night out. I'm a semi retired lab rep from the medical sector and wanted something to keep me busy, I was hired on as a seasonal worker for the Holidays and Started the end of October until Last Saturday 12/21/24... Wow .. The Pay is Horrible for what the Expectations are, over worked and constantly understaffed.. Two of their long time regulars just up and Quit.. The Atmosphere towards Seasonal hires, were Petty, Rude and Snarky, some of us seasonal hires picked up on the Negative energy. While the Store Manager was Nice Her, Leads or MOD's (Managers on Duty) Left a lot to be desired.. Would disappear in the bathrooms, chat with other co-workers, taking advantage of new hires piling on work and not leaving in a timely manor at closing.. Pettiness when you Mispronounce a item and the Pronunciation Princess will correct you, Stockroom is a Disaster, making it real difficult to find items for customers and it doesn't help either when you check the inventory on the register and it shows there is but isn't .. where did it go??? I constantly sold $2500-6000 daily and sometimes beat the regular Employees, can you say Jealousy?? You don't earn anything off those sales either.. The River Oaks location has only Two working Registers and one old one that hardly works, Horrible during this holiday season, With many customers leaving, waiting excessively to check out, so your sales go poof, They are gone... I worked many years ago at a real high end Store and was compensated well.. This company is neither..... Lastly the store's retail space is filthy, the Floors have never been moped, nor above fixtures dusted.. The kitchen oven/stove exhaust wafts throughout the store leaving a grungy film on store fixtures... What an amazing class we had today with Chef Nick! We had a group of 18 people, and all of our group felt like we had all the attention, all the help, he was so patient with us! They also gave us, snacks so we wouldn't be hangry since we were cooking for 1 hour and a half. They served water and coffee. Chefs Nick helpers were very attentive as well. We had the South American Kitchen Steak, we made pupusas with salsa roja, grilled flank steak with chimichurri sauce and warm corn salad and dulce de leche ice cream. My husband and I have taken several cooking classes here over the last few years, and before I even knew him, I would come and take classes with friends. It's one of my favorite things to do, and we love how engaging the chefs are with the students. We contemplated registering here for our wedding this past September, but since there isn't a Sur La Table close to where we were getting married (New Orleans), we didn't. I've told several friends who are recently engaged that these classes will help a ton with knowing the gadgets you're registering for. It was my fiancé and I's first time at Sur la Table and we thought it was great! Chef Nick was our instructor; he was charismatic, knowledgeable, and funny. He was helpful and demonstrated techniques up close, but we also didn't feel like he was hovering too much. I think before the pandemic, you'd be working with another couple. But now you & your partner have your own station, which I really like and hope they'll keep this way. Everything you cook in class is for 2 servings too, so you eat right after you cook+snap photos. This is a review of the cooking class I attended recently. Let me explain first of all that a few days before the class was going to happen, I looked at several reviews that people had posted. A lot of the ratings/reviews were not very favorable so needless to say, I went into this with low expectations. On the day of the event, I arrived about 15 minutes early and was met by the chef (Dominic) who was very polite and asked me (and others) to hang out at the store until we were called back to start. The class started on time (give or take a few minutes) and from the very start, Dominic (and his kitchen staff) did an amazing job! He described the menu and went through what we (the class) would be doing. In some of the reviews I had read, people complained about how little they actually got to participate in the preparation. That was not the case in my opinion. Yes, there is a lot of things prepared ahead of time, but when you are talking about preparing a full meal, teaching 13 people, and doing it in two hours, I for one am glad all that prep work was done. Plus, that gave time for the chef to explain techniques, what his experiences as a chef have taught him, tips and tricks, etc. It was all very well done (except the steak, it was perfectly medium rare :-) and very enjoyable. There are many other examples I could share but hopefully this helps paint a pretty good picture for anyone considering taking a class at the River Oaks location. My recommendation (if it isn't clear) is to do it. This won't be the last time I sign up for a class here and hopefully Chef Dominic (you rock dude!) is the instructor again. read more

Great place to learn cooking. I came here for an event the first time, and came back the second time because I loved how much I learned the first time around. Oh, the $20 discount on my second class was also an added bonus. The chefs who rotate and teach the classes here are really passionate about teaching cooking techniques that you can bring home. In just two classes, I've learned how to make a vinaigrette, prepare a compound butter, sear steak, double fry french fries, temper eggs, cut vegetables, mince garlic, butterfly a chicken, make risotto, and much much more. The tips the chefs teach you here, you can't read from any recipe. In my opinion, it has to be taught in person. I love that the chefs come around to each table to check on our progress and whether we're cooking our food right. I think the classes are definitely worth trying, whether it's with your friends, family, or as a date night. You'll learn so much. The only thing is I can't go as often as I'd like because the classes are quite expensive. My advice would be to get on their email list so they can send you discounts on cooking classes every now and then. Definitely take advantage of them. Otherwise, these classes have given me a new appreciation of the time and effort it takes to cook a delicious meal. I will be back again. read more

This past Christmas I purchased an Instant Pot all purpose pressure cooker and haven't used it more than 2 or 3 times. So I signed up to Sur La Table cooking class specific to learning and using specifically the Instant Pot. This was my first class attending here and what a very pleasant surprise on the fun and casual nature of the class. The store provides for the attendees free coffee, water and a small selection of chucuterie. Chef Nick the instructor did a great job of making the class fun, engaging and providing insight about the device and about pressure cooking. Other participants were also fun to chat it up with. The class we cooked 3 different dishes using the pressure cooker, including a desert which was suppose to be a chocolate cake but ended up more like a brownie. Never the less it was very tasty with some ice-cream. Anyone thinking on signing up for one of these instructor led classes I would encourage, if you can get over a bit of the sticker shock on the cost. read more

I love the store for having more and different things than Williams Sonoma. This is more upscale, and more gourmet. However, I must say that the clearance section is just downright awful. There's a million ways it could be better - it could be better organized, better priced, and well... the ugly things just should not be sold.
