I have been taking painting classes at Art League for the past 2 years. I really enjoy it. The…read moreclasses last 8-10 weeks and are offered with a variety of themes, times, and teachers. The first year, I had two classes with a teacher that had a more relaxed approach and more of a focus on fun. Now that I have gotten more serious about honing my skills, I have been attending a more structured class that has a specific goal each class and a homework assignment. Don't worry, you're not getting graded! Some weeks, homework just doesn't happen. *glances at the stack of 4 finished and 3 unfinished pieces from this semester* :) Classes run around $30/class, which is perfect. It may seem a little rough when the full price hits the card + that expensive trip for supplies, but remember that you are getting 3 hours/week with an accomplished artist in a studio. Being an ALH student also gets you a discount at the art supply store on Main St. Don't forget to show them your supply list when checking out for this discount. Zac organizes the classes and is very helpful. He's the person to contact with any questions. Friendly guy. As for the actual art displays, I am not always a fan. I always check out the latest exhibition and it's a mix. Right now there is a wooden beehive-type thing. I'm just not feeling it. There have been some very cool pieces that came through in the past. Mix bag. They also do separate shows with the artwork of the individuals that participate in Healing Art, the students in the classes (like me), and the teachers. Healing Art is an art program for people with severe illnesses that is paid for by the donations and membership fees (being a member gets you discounted classes and is annual). The openings of new shows are a lot of fun. Even if you don't paint/draw/make jewelry/collage, just come check out a show.

I traveled from Austin to Houston for a 3 day workshop at W-ASH. it was totally worth the trip…read morejust to discover how wonderful the space and people are. The people were very nice and welcoming and the event was well organized and communication was excellent! The venue was the best I've experienced any where. I've attended a lot of workshops and classes and gir in instructions and demos all students are usually tightly clustered around the presenter trying to get a view of what is happening. Even though I'm a taller person I'm usually unsuccessful and find myself craning my neck and bobbing around as those in front adjust their positions. Very frustrating! But not here!!! You have the option to do that or you can stay at your OWN 6 foot table and watch one of the 3 huge screens the demonstrator is projected upon. There's a W-ASH person managing the camera zooming in and out on the work or the pallet and sometime both. It works really well. And if there's a new tool involved sometimes the artist will demonstrate for fewer people again and again. The space is truly amazing. Parking was easily had on the street. Note: the elevator is out but is being worked in. The workshop is up one flight of stairs. oh.... and downstairs! there's a gallery showcasing watercolor works and there's a sales area too. Great place! so glad I took the effort to get there! And my work from the workshop didn't turn out too bad either! I hope to go back!
