Overall I'd give it a "MID+". The place was clean and the food was average. A couple things I feel could be improved upon: The server didn't ask us how we wanted our burgers cooked (ie well, medium, rare etc..). This is a critical error IMO. The meet was good quality but when you like medium/medium rare and it comes well that's a major bummer. The server also didn't mention that cheese, tomato, and grilled onion had to be requested on the "pt. Lobos burger. For the fountain drinks they give you cheap plastic cups that remind me of a 90's pizza parlor. The regular fries, garlic fries, and sweet potato fries were all great! The toppings on the burgers and buns were also really good. I also like the fact that fries and drink is included in the price. I didn't order beer or wine but the bar also looked nice. My husband and I stopped in to watch the World Series. We ordered chicken wings and fries as well as calamari. The chicken wings were oversized, crispy and delicious! We asked for buffalo sauce. I also attempted the Phoenix sauce. It was spicy as they said it was. The calamari was fresh and crispy with a sweet lightly spicy chili sauce. Honestly, the best calamari I've had in quite a while. I have never been more excited to write a yelp review. Husband and I both ordered The Works and shared a large chili con carne fries. Too much food but OMG! We went in and split a SUR Phoenix chicken sandwich. They aren't kidding the slaw is hot! But also sweet and crunchy, served on a soft Kaiser-roll type bun. I don't understand what these reviewers are seeing. Did this place change ownership recently? I don't want to be a hater, but if you think this is the best burger you've ever had, you need to go eat some more burgers. We ended up here on a Thursday night because it was literally the only restaurant on Alvarado Street that didn't have a wait. That's usually a terrible sign, but we were with both kids and just needed to feed them. The seating area is large but it's actually a fast casual, since you order and pay at the counter and find your own seat. I never like these type of places because I'm not sure how much to tip, and at least one other customer left confused after standing around without being greeted. My wife ordered the Sur Cheeseburger while I went with the Spicy Southern Fried Chicken Burger. I was expecting some type of crispy Nashville-style spicy chicken sandwich from the description, but there was absolutely nothing southern or spicy about this sandwich. It was basically a chicken breast fried in tempura batter and doused with Frank's Red Hot Buffalo Sauce. It was soggy on arrival and not good. My wife's cheeseburger fared slightly better, but the patty was not very juicy or tender or particularly flavorful. It was exactly average. The only positive thing about this place is the condiment bar, where you can load up on toppings and sauces to customize your meal. But honestly, there are no amount of condiments that can turn a mediocre burger into a good one. Maybe there just aren't many good burger places in Monterey, but when I'm paying nearly $60 for a meal, I expect it to taste better than what I can make on my own. We were looking for a premium burger in Monterey, and found SUR Burger on Yelp. They had many positive reviews, and it was just what we were looking for. Yelp came through again! We ventured downtown to the establishment which is on the quaint & energetic Alvarado St. Upon entering the restaurant, everything looked very clean & modern. The atmosphere inside is very pleasing & comfortable with large photographic images of ocean scenes, and brown wood throughout. Indie music was playing that most people would enjoy. The dining inside includes a booth-lined wall with tables & seating at the bar. There is also seating on the front outside patio. All looked inviting. The menu is large and varied. We noticed their "Signature Cheeseburger & Fries" on the menu. The burger is 1/2 pound of fresh, all natural, 100% Chuck, no hormones, no antibiotics, vegetarian fed beef. It is served on their SUBU bun. The cheese choices are: white cheddar, American, Swiss, blue cheese or warm queso. The description sounded perfect, so we ordered one and added avocado, along with a single "Just The Cheeseburger". The food was brought out relatively quickly and sizzling hot. Both burgers were succulent, moist & juicy, and had an excellent flavor. The crispy lettuce and flavorful tomato came on the side. The flavorful coated french fries were perfectly done, crisp on the outside and soft inside. At the SUBU condiment bar, there are sweet pickles, dill pickles, olives, pickled cabbage, peppercinis, pickled vegetable mix & creamy coleslaw. The food was great! We got the PT. Lobos burgers with garlic fries and the bacon was nice and crispy. The service was good, you get your own drinks and things so no real need for service in that aspect. The only complaint I have is the amount of gnats flying around. I had to keep covering my drink in fear of them going in and the majority of my time I was swatting them away. I probably won't come back because of that. Stopped by on a trip to Monterey, it was our first stop before getting to our Airbnb. We placed an order online and picked it up, they were super busy so the food wasn't ready at the estimated time. Upon first getting our order, opening it in the car, we noticed that we had an item missing. Luckily, when we called the manager/owner remembered our order and had realized we were not lying about it. He was super apologetic and gave us extra and then some to make up for it. We ordered two burgers, drinks, jalapeño poppers and mozzarella sticks. Everything was delicious. The burgers were not anything fancy, which I appreciated. Too many people do too much and leave you wanting. This was like one of those Tom's #3 (which is how I like my burgers, a la old school) but with quality ingredients. The only thing missing was an orange bang, but we cannot have everything in life, I suppose. The mozz sticks were some of the best that I have had in a long time, as were the jalapeño poppers. Great place to grab a delicious burger! I was looking for a great burger place where I could also sit outside with my dog. This was it. Crunchy, skinny fries were delicious and the Sur sauce with the grilled onions on my burger caused me to eat at this place 2 days in a row! They brought it all outside to me and even brought my dog some water. The only fault I could find: no Dr Pepper or Pibb at the fountain. We saw this place on yelp and decided to have a mid week casual date night who's not in the mood for a really good burger right? We decided to head down to downtown Monterey on a pre-covid normally busy Thursday night. We arrived there was one family finishing up their meal in the restaurant other than that it was pretty quiet noticeably pretty dark in there at first I thought they might be closing early however I think that is their desired ambience. You are able to sit and dine in the establishment however they do have a walk up order then pay and find a seat method which is totally OK with us they had a very well lit digital menu on the wall which is amazing due to the pandemic and not having to handle a paper/plastic menu. Lots of tasty burgers to choose from we decided on the works and the mushroom burger, jalapeño poppers and mozzarella sticks I had a fountain drink and the hubby had a Modelo which was on tap. The service was really good friendly atmosphere they have the basketball game playing as well as golf another gentleman came to dine at the bar he was watching golf he seem to be enjoying himself so all was good I asked for the food itself it was pretty tasty and extremely fresh definitely wish there was a little bit more mushroom on my mushroom burger however I was very satisfied and happy with my choice My Hubby also thought the burger that he selected was good it have fresh avocados which is always appreciated the only thing that was a little strange is they brought everything out altogether we usually get the munchies first and then the main course but it wasn't a problem as I said we really enjoyed everything and the people were nice.
