I was craving German food in the Bay and came across Suppenküche in Hayes Valley. The vibe immediately transports you to a Bavarian Wirtshaus -- a cozy, rustic tavern meant for beer, hearty food, and long communal meals. It was bustling when we arrived, with options to share a long communal table, sit at high tops, or wait for a private table. I especially loved the heavy wooden material focus throughout the space from the wooden beamed walls and tables. - Pretzel with Obatzda -- my favorite dish of the night; I haven't had an authentic pretzel in years, and while this one was smaller than those in Germany, it had a crisp exterior and soft interior; the obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread) was rich, savory, and the perfect complement - Wienerschnitzel -- classic breaded cutlet served with bratkartoffeln (pan-fried potatoes); nicely crisped without being greasy, and a comforting, savory plate overall - Jägerschnitzel -- available breaded or unbreaded; the champignonsoße (mushroom sauce) added great depth and moisture to the meat; it came with a small portion of käsespätzle, though I did notice the schnitzel itself was noticeably smaller than the Wienerschnitzel - Buttery Lettuce Salad -- simple but surprisingly delicious; fresh greens with a light, clean dressing that balanced the heavier dishes well The interior is cozy and tavern-like, definitely capturing that old-world German pub feel. Amazing ambiance like a cute Bavarian resturant, and a really fabulous tap list of German beer! The service was good and the vibw was very fun. I loved the pretzel and the potato cucumber salad. The obatzda was very Camembert forward. I got the potato pancakes, which were a little disappointing. They were so thick that the edges were too crispy to cut through, and the solid was very gooey. The secondary waiter took my order and was quick the other server who was the main one, rarely came outside. I get it's cold outside. For our first visit, we enjoyed everything--from the cozy, stylish space to the incredibly friendly service with thoughtful recommendations. I was relieved to find solid vegetarian options, and the pea soup and Brussels sprouts were both delicious. Many items do have meat, but expected. The only German place I've tried in SF, and I'm pretty happy this is located in the heart of the city in lively Hayes Valley. I've been to Suppenküche a few times and always get the same thing -- Jägerschnitzel (which is a pork loin with nice and flavorful mushroom gravy and spatzle on the side) and potato pancakes! I've had better jägerschnitzel on the East Coast, but I like the balance of flavors here (and it's not too salty!). The potato pancakes are very scrumptious esp with the apple sauce and I've often contemplated ordering several more... It can get pretty loud and crowded in here (a lot of groups) and service is on the slower side - but definitely worth a try if you're looking for German food in the Bay. read more

I came on a weekday for a late lunch so it wasn't too busy -- to be honest I think going at night would probably be a better vibe. I have found that good central European food can be rather hard to find in the US, so as a huge fan of schnitzel, I was really quite excited (and cautiously optimistic) when my friend told me about this local German restaurant. We came by for an early-ish dinner (around 5:30 or 6) on a Friday; the place was quite empty, and most people actually wanted to sit outdoors, so there was only one table other than us in the indoor dining area. They had a few daily specials that the server introduced to us (the schweinshaxe sounded really yummy), but obviously we had to order the schnitzels. For the two of us, we picked the wienerschnitzel and jägerschnitzel to share. The wienerschnitzel came in a surprisingly large portion size and was super delicious. The breading wasn't too heavy (wasn't too oily when fried), and the pork was tender, flavourful, and just a very solid cut throughout. The side roasted potatoes were fine, but nothing too special (ditto for the side salad). The jägerschnitzel was also amazing :) I really loved how rich and fragrant the mushroom sauce was without being too heavy, and it went really nicely with the juicy sauteéd pork. This one comes with a side of spätzle, which is also a particular favourite of mine (and similarly hard to find in good quality in the US). Much like everything else, it was fantastic - not too oily, really well cooked, and tasted really good with the mushroom sauce. They also have a great selection of beers (on tap and otherwise), we went with the Hefeweizen which is always a solid choice (when it's the correct Weihenstephaner brand, of course!) Drink prices were pretty reasonable throughout, from what I could tell. I did think the price point was a bit high, but I suppose that's inevitable nowadays. Regardless, it was such a lovely meal with excellent, helpful, and efficient service. Their menu isn't that big, but I was actually intrigued by almost every main dish they had, so I'm really excited to come back and try more of their menu soon. read more

It was a beautiful day for outdoor seating, especially since we had our dog Kona with us. The service was friendly and quick, and the outdoor ambiance was great. Our group of seven, plus Kona, enjoyed the Saturday brunch menu. I ordered a side of bratwurst and a potato pancake, which was perfect for my appetite. The potato pancake was crispy on the outside and hash-like on the inside, with a golden crispness that suggested clean oil. Comes with sour cream and apple sauce on the side. The bratwurst was delicious, especially with mustard. My cousin ordered the donuts, which were more like big, fluffy donut holes. They were delicious and filling, despite only being three. The others ordered the chicken sandwich, which came with German red slaw and a perfectly cooked sunny-side-up egg on brioche. The dill pickled cucumber salad was fabulous and perfectly pickled and refreshing! The portion was perfect, and it was delectable. The place has a cozy atmosphere, and the chicken schnitzel and Spätzle are absolutely amazing. We usually prefer sitting at the counter, because we can get immediate service and a more intimate experience compared to the communal tables. My only downside is the quality of the wines, which is disappointing. While I understand that, as a German restaurant, the focus is on beer, they could really make an effort to offer better wines. The current selection feels like $7 bottles from Safeway, which is a shame.
