We always order from this truck. $50 and up every time we order but this is the last time. We ordered tortas, quesadillas, and tacos. They sent quesadillas with pork inside which I don't eat because of my religion. Obviously mistakes happen so it was not a big deal to ask for the mistake to simply be resolved by making the quesadillas of what I actually ordered (cecina). Instead we were met with a horrible attitude and a rude tone stating "well there's no more quesadillas" and the nerve to ask for the sauce back too when we also ordered other food. The refund was solely for the quesadillas. There was no need to treat us that way when it was your mistake. read more

Their tacos are A++++ for a reason; they know what they're doing and take pride in what they're doing. This is a no-frills establishment. That's literally a taco truck on the streets, but what separates them from everyone else is their impeccable service and their outstanding attitude... plus excellent food. Tonight we orders 4 tacos: Al pastor, pollo, carnitas, and chorizo. All equally delicious as they're placed in 2 soft tacos with cilantro, onions, and their specific meat (that's it). No matter what you're ordering, whether it's one of their amazing tacos or a chalupa or Tamale, you won't be disappointed. This taco truck is usually parked off 96th and Broadway right in front of Gristede's. There are usually only two people in the truck, one cooking and the other taking orders. The people are nice, however sometimes there is a bit of a language barrier if your order isn't straightforward/you are making special requests on your order. The truck has a long metal counter that a few people can eat at, but that's about it. So if you don't get a space on the counter, then you're left holding your food as there is no where to really sit near the area; unless you can find a seat on the benches in front of the 96th street station. The tacos are probably the most authentic that I've had in the UWS. Definitely a good choice to make a stop at before or after a night out. read more

It all really depends on what you get from this food truck. If I had no taste buds then this place would be a solid 5, but unfortunately for them I do and the food is generally pretty bland overall. For Mexican food, it definitely isn't anything to rave about and like I said some dishes have a little more flavor than others. I was a happy customer until I found multiple bones of various sizes in my chicken burrito and it smelled funny too. Felt sick after eating it too. Picture the scene - a quiet, sophisticated Upper West Side street around midnight on a Tuesday evening, and...what's that...not a sidewalk café or even a crepe truck, but SUPER TACOS! This substantial vehicle roared into the area to serve traditional Mexican street food to classy Upper Westers. My late night hunger pains were nagging away from my belly, craving to be abated. I decided to sample some truck goodies and see what all of the buzz was about. My tamale was a dry blend of corn meal, chicken, and tomatoes. I usually like the corn to be moister and less gritty. The Spicy Pork taco was a blend of crisp pork shavings and chunks. I thought the pork had a strong flavor that tasted exactly of what you would deduce from the word "pig". Maybe my lack of fiery hot sauce and unexcitable pork palate led to my uninspiring review, but, while I found the snacks a good deal for the money, I have had better Mexican fare. read more

This is a great place to grab some fresh hot tacos for $2 late at night. I nearly burnt my fingers trying to pick up the tacos the last time I was here. I've tried the lengua (tongue), al pastor (shredded pork), and chivo (goat). The al pastor is the best from what I've tried. The orange soda is fine but why do they tease me with guava when it's always out of stock? Crowds are minimal after 10 PM but I know I've stopped by after midnight and had to wait on line. Looking for a good late night bite? Only got a few bucks in your pocket? Take one of the red line trains to the 96th street stations and walk around the corner. This place was right next to where I was staying and was very happy it was there! Normally I would be apprehensive about trying street vendor food, where I come from in Miami the street vendor is usually a good place to get dirty food, or worse... But I was taught not to fear by a chef / traveling food junkie I often watch on TV. He was right, Mexican street food is awesome! (Thanks Tony!) This review is for the truck and restaurant on the corner of my block. The tacos are fresh and delicious, and there is a huge variety of proteins. That said, the non-taco items such as the burritos are pretty mediocre. They also take forever to make each order - I'm talking minimum 10 minutes. While this means it's fresh, there needs to be a more efficient way to get her done - maybe have the more common meats waiting on deck to be cooked. The restaurant is cool, but inconsistently open and sells weird stuff like Wonder Bread, because when you go for that late night taco run, you may be thinking, "I can use a loaf of mediocre white bread and a carton of milk". Maybe there's some kind of food stamp scheme going on there. Not too sure. I should also mention that my girlfriend had stomach issues after eating here, but it's unclear whether she got food poisoning as the food tasted fresh. read more

Review #300 goes out to my new favorite quick fix on the UWS. Operating out a truck on the Southwest corner of 96th and Broadway (across from a Gristede's), this unassuming operation makes an assortment of tacos that remind me fondly of a taco cart I had a love affair with in Playa de Carmen. Tacos are $2/piece and represent most of the menu. A generous amount of meat/fillings are provided on top of two soft tortillas. Gorditas and Tacos Durados are $3 (will explain those below). There are daily specials including soups and Tamales (Sat/Sunday). Two salsas are available. Red and green. Both are spicy - I prefer the green a lot more. Limes are also available. Here's what I've had: Tacos: Al Postor (Pork + pineapple) - My favorite taco so far. Carne Enchiladas (Spicy Pork) - Combined w/ lime and the salsa verde, this is really tasty. Bistec de Res (Steak) - Chewy chunks of steak not ground beef. Another winner. Chorizo (Sausage) - Really liked this as well. Not quite as much as the pork tacos but I'll be ordering this again. Barbacoa de Pollo (bbq chicken) - Not as tasty as the pork but a healthly amount of chicken and not too dry. Worthwhile if you're a swine-o-phobe but not a must-have. Pork Gordita - This is a grilled sandwich made of cornmeal bread, lettuce, a white cheese, and a choice of meat. I chose pork. This was good but not as satisfying as a taco. Tacos Dorados - Three rolled, deep-fried tacos that either are - or are very much like - taquitos. Chicken is the only choice and they are topped with shredded lettuce and white cheese. These are good but, again, not as essential as the pork or chorizo tacos. Tamales - Only available on the weekends, this was my least favorite thing I had here. Very dry and flavorless. Not worth it in my eyes. Orchata - This white beverage sells for $1. While it looks milky, I believe it's made of rice and has a nice cinnamon flavor to it. Definitely tasty and pretty refreshing. Service is pleasant and I didn't feel like too much of an ass for ordering in English. There's always a bunch of people hovering around the cart - let's just say they don't look like Yelpers. If you ask for it to go, they wrap each thing up in foil, add in containers of red and green salsa, and wedges of lime. This particular taco truck has been on my mind for various reasons...none of which are good or even sub par. What WAS this junk? We decided to spend the day at Central Peezy since it was a nice day out. Tacos, checkers, scrabble, vino (discreetly), laughter, sunshine, people watching...a grand old time. I ordered 2 pork tacos and tortilla chips with guacamole. The total came out to $10. Decent pricing. We headed over to the park and entered around the mid 90's. DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT make a right turn once you enter. There's a lack of big, grassy knolls where you can play in the sun. So, we entered the park and made a right turn. There were no grassy knolls...so we kept walking...just keep walking...just keep walking. 20 minutes later we passed the Guggenheim. WTF! After defaming my friend in my head, we finally sat down on a random bench to eat. It was nearly 4 PM and I hadn't eaten anything all day. I was trying to savor the tacos until we found a nice spot at the park to thoroughly enjoy them. I added the light zesty green salsa and took a BIG bite. First thoughts...chewy and bland. I looked inside the taco to find a TON of pieces of sliced up fat. Straight up fat! I tried to pick them out but I ended up emptying out the whole taco sans vegetables. Isn't food supposed to taste good when you're famished? I didn't even bother eating the second taco. Le sigh. The guacamole wasn't all that great either. It was lacking -- lime and salt. The texture was also pretty pastey and I'm no guacamole expert but I'm pretty sure the consistency should be smooth, rich and slightly tangy/zesty. ...I was cranky for the rest of the day. I'll start with the obligatory I'm from California, so all my ratings are skewed because nothing will taste like authentic Mexican food back home. This truck just made me sad. In LA, taco trucks are notorious for being even more delicious than their restaurant counterparts. This truck, by far, has the worst tacos I've tasted in NY. And that's saying a lot. I got Al Pastor Taco, Asada, and Carnita. It sucked. Man, the tortilla to meat ratio is horrendous. Every bite i took was ALL tortilla. Look, you go a Knicks game to watch Carmelo and Amare. You don't go to a Knicks game to watch Jared Jefferies. Who? yeah. No one knows because no one cares. Look. I understand the tortilla is very important. Especially because, that's one of the two things NYC taco places do wrong. (1. consistent and moist tortilla and 2. A good, spicy, hot sauce.) But, if you're gonna throw this flaky piece of crap in my face, might as well fill it with meat. Then, i'd at least be able to semi-enjoy it. Failure. But Cliff, what about the meat they gave?? it was DRY AS HELL. I felt like I was blow drying my throat. I could barely swallow the Carnitas. I had to drench it in their bland sauces. I bet the quesadillas here are pretty good, but WHO CAN'T MAKE A QUESADILLA? I am the worst cook on earth, and I can make you a quesadilla. Put cheese in a tortilla and grill it. There you go. Every night, a long silver van pulls up to the southwest corner of Broadway and 96th and serves some very tasty tacos. There's plenty of debate over which New York-based hole-in-the-wall joint serves the best tacos, but surely Super Tacos, for the nominated in the 2005 Vendy Awards, is in the upper echelon. There are daily specials, a regular list of sandwiches (tortas) and tacos, and occasional specials that are written down on the back of a paper plate and taped up to the side of the van. Personal favorites: the al pastor tacos (with diced pineapple, onion, and cilantro), tacos dorados (chicken wrapped in tortillas, deep fried and topped with queso fresco... three to an order), and the moles. I cannot spar on the merits of mole - I just think theirs is quite tasty and even better with their tortillas than the somewhat dry rice. If you get the food to go, expect to find quartered lime (sometimes lemon) wrapped in tin foil for sprinkling over your tacos, and a container of their lip-smacking green salsa. The red salsa, strangely enough, seems hotter. The tortas are good for a change of pace, but I wouldn't go just for them. They're served on mini sub rolls, flattened out, and seem to follow a similar pattern. Both sides have mayo, the filling goes in, and it's topped with some jalepenos that have been grilled on the cook top. Maybe some cheese, too. For a winter treat, ask for a cup of the arroz con leche. It's kind of like horchata, but hot. As the name implies, it's rice and milk, but warmed up with some sugar and maybe some cinnamon. Of all things, you can even get delivery from the van. There are a few bikes locked up on the railing outside Gristede's. However, the best way to eat the tacos, even in the freezing winter, is by standing out in front of the truck. When the wind picks up, they'll drop down plastic curtains. The food turns over quickly, there's Mexican music playing, you're in a diverse crowd ranging from kitchen help to businessmen, and your lips are tingling from the salsa. What more do you want? I don't know what time the van actually pulls up - I'm going to guess around 6 PM. I also don't know what time it leaves, but my impression is that it stays until the wee hours. read more

I had been reading a lot about the Taco Truck (NY Times article, May 16) so finally I had to see for myself. I am pleased to report that these tacos are pretty damn tasty. I had one each of barbacoa (chicken), bistec (steak) and al pastor (pork with pineapples). For $6, you cannot find a much cheaper, or more delicious, meal. This would probably cost $15 at a faux Mexican place downtown, and not taste as authentic either. I'm looking forward to trying the tortas (sandwiches) and tamales, but that will have to wait for the next time, or time after that. When you're addicted to tacos, like I am, it's hard to avoid ordering your usual. In any case, Taco Truck is worth a pitstop. read more

4.5 stars Ok, now I have seen the light and light looks like a taco. This evening, when after cooking the past few nights, we decided to take a walk down Broadway to the Super Taco truck. Today, however, it was located on Amsterdam between 96th and 95th, in front of the Associated grocery store. The menu is pretty big, by food truck standards and so it took us some time to decide what we wanted. The guys in the truck were friendly, had some nice music playing and the smell was intoxicating. Here is what we came up with (half vegetarian and half meat dishes) -Lengua Taco - delicious, and really packed with meat and only $2. A great deal though i did find the tongue a little bit dry. -cheese and chili tamale - I tasted it and while it was a bit spicy, it was a tad on the dry side. Good but not great -quesadllas de maiz -- corn tortillias filled with beans, cheese and lettuce and covered with more cheese. These were excellent. The cheese wasn't over done and it was creamy and melted nicely. -special of the day which was steak with peppers and onions, rice, beans and tortillas. This was huge and not easily finished after that tongue taco. Overall, I was very impressed by the food and considering it was $15 for that feast. The spice level on most of the dishes was a bit tame, but I suspect you could ask for more sauce of chilies. I noticed a number of poor review, usually trying to compare this food to that of Mexican carts or places on the West Coast. Is it possible that the food you ate there was better? Sure. Is it also possible that the style, toppings or dishes are actually different? Yep. For what it is, price, quality, taste, this place delivers (literally, they actually also deliver). read more

Where were you on Oscar night? I was hanging out with the mexicans huffing exhaust fumes and eating tacos. My first visit to Super Tacos "Sobre Ruedas" I had the sweet tamale($2) it was good it has raisins on it and some red color to it but no meat or other ingredients. The al pastor tacos($2 each) were just ok kinda dry. To drink I had the Agua de Jamaica which is a red juice, I've had it at other places but this one wasn't very sweet. Maybe I just caught them on an off night. ---- Second Visit was much better. The special was posole but they were out of it cause I got there about 9 pm and they had been open since noon because it was Sunday. It was cold out like last time but they had a small folding room built up around the window that could fit about 10 people in it, problem was they had their truck running and the carbon monoxide was getting thick. So I ended up ordering a tostada de tinga($3) which was real tasty. I then ordered a mexican sandwich with spicy pork inside(Torta de Carne Enchilada). It was very very yummy probably the best thing I had there on both visits. I also got another sweet Tamale because they were out of all other 3 kinds. This tamale was much bigger than last time and again very tasty. To drink I got Agua de Horchata which was sweet and had cinnamon or nutmeg in it, YUM! I might try to get there earlier in the day when they have tamales with meat. They are there at 6 pm every day except for weekends when they are there starting at noon. Every day they have a different unique dish such as Mole Verde on Monday, Guisado de Res on tuesday etc. Go try em out and hopefully you catch them on a good day. You can call ahead for pick up. What do I miss about my travels to mexico? Good street food! How else was the taco intended? Something about ordering from an authentic mexican food truck makes the food taste better. They've got a great variety of tacos, including a large numbers of ones you'd find at a taqueria in Ciudad de Mexico. My personal favorite would have to be tacos al pastor, meaning shepherd style which is the mexican take on kebab style grilled meat which originates from Arab immigrants that went to Mexico. (except made of pork) If you want more proof as to why this place is so amazing, just look at the crowds that form around this place from 8pm through the whole night. Fom the mexican community following to wall st. bankers and night shift workers, this place screams authenticity and dedication. The tacos are priced to attract all hungry passerbys. 2 dollars gets you a double padded flour tortilla accompanied by your choice of meat and accoutrement. Al pastors are served with pineapple and cilantro. And if you're a true hot sauce fan, I believe their two picantes, green and red make for great additions to any of the meals. They also serve a variety of daily specials varying from different Moles to tamales on the weekends. Make sure to pair your dish or taco with a good drink such as horchata (a milk like beverage made of ground rice or almond - have to try it to appreciate it) All in all - Authentic, cheap, good community eat, in the heart of the Upper West Side. "Sure, try it while I am away on a business trip" was the usual banter when my co-habitant and I used to pass by this truck; the underlying implication being "suffer the ignominious consequences in the bathroom gracefully in one's own solitude, in privacy and without undue and unwelcome obstruction." Years later, prodded by favorable reviews and the emergence of food truck as the pre-eminent gastronomic destination, one night after dinner at Il Matto, with our stomachs three-fourths full - the pleasant dining experience leaving us in a semi-contented mood - rather than despondent one-quarter empty, we decided to give the truck its due examination. First, a serious debate of which of the fourteen intriguing selections of meats on offer - chivo (goat) or lengua (tongue) - was commenced in front of the three truck guys, much to their amusement. A stoic decision was subsequently reached - an order of mere two tacos and one tamale. Not accustomed to the practice of eating on one's feet, an unnecessarily heated debate of taking-out in favor of comfortable sofa against immediate consumption to avoid the food getting cold ensued. However, before a satisfactory resolution could be reached, tacos con lengua were placed on the rickety metal counter in front of us, which promptly got our undivided attention. I do not subscribe to the Tex-Mex custom of the West Coast where the taco shell is fried: What is then the difference between flautas and tacos then? In addition, flour tortilla is an abomination that should be banned; soggy, under-cooked and thoroughly flavorless, it has no place in my culinary world. Super Tacos' tacos were properly doubled up - two layers of soft corn tortillas. The lengua was nicely tender and adequately seasoned, while tacos al pastor was a little too lightly seasoned; a problem easily solved by a hefty scoop of the unexpectedly delicious green salsa and another of the hot red salsa. Thinly sliced radish was also provided for the patrons, just as at any taco stands in Mexico. The tamale con queso had such a fragrant aroma of the corn and sweet polenta-like consistency. I was happily occupied in the repetition of cutting up a piece of the tamale and prop it into my mouth without wasting it to the sidewalk for a while before I realized; "Where is the stuffing?" The queso turned out to be a reddish log of indeterminable substance; its taste was sorrowfully similar to some kind of low-fat cheese stick. Discarding this vaguely offensive object, we proceeded to divide the rest of the tamale in companionable comfort. read more

The vegetarian tacos didn't live up to the hype that is "best tacos on the uws" were they tasty? Yes. Were they a decent portion for the price ? Yes. So I'm good. I wish they tasted better. My problem is that we order well in advance and I still had to wait at the truck. The service was nice which was cool. I scored a free beverage and I as used it was because I spoke Spanish with the woman and was a new customer so I like that. The guacamole lacked salt but the salsas were right on the money. My kiddos loves the burrito ( veggie ) and the cheese flautas..I tried one as well and the cheese they used on that was amazing. This is the best $2 we've ever spent on food in Manhattan. It's an (extended) family-run biz that's not a restaurant but a small taco truck parked on 96th between Broadway and West End. They're open from noon till the wee hours, sometimes past midnight, perfect for a post-drink grub. As far as Mexican food goes, this seems to be one of the most authentic hole-in-the-wall-style taco places in NYC. They've got a bunch of different kinds of tacos, from shredded chicken (Pollo) to more uncommon like goat, but our favorite is the spicy pork (Enchilada), with beef (Rez) as a close second. The Torta is a super tasty, filling, warm sandwich layered with lettuce, jalapenos, melted cheese, and a meat of our choice. We like the beef Torta. Their tamales are pretty good too, either chicken or cheese w/jalapeno (sweet'n'spicy). And Horchata (a cinnamon rice drink) for a dollar!
