I wasnt impressed. This place isn't horrible. But I was surprised and disappointed that they'd give you free chips and salsa but they charge you for pico de gallo. The free salsa is tomato flavored water. The Tuesday tacos are ok but if you want pico there's a 75 cent charge. Didn't make sense to me either. We visited here over the weekend and absolutely loved it! Great service, even better food at a cozy little place. We had the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans very flavorful and the margaritas are really good they only have the original flavor on the rocks or blended. I use to love this place ! Until I ordered a asada wet burrito, half way through the burrito my stomach started hurting and got sick IMMEDIATELY AFTER FINISHING IT. Threw up for 5 hours straight, couldn't sleep or drink anything and couldn't eat food for 4 days! I had to drink smoothies for a whole week before I felt normal. My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in this country. And it's a chain! It's got very little vibe or decor but the food is better than anything in L.A. The salsa is amazing but the absolute best thing here is the carnitas. The plate is great but I usually just get the "regular carnitas burrito." Which is tricky because there are three carnitas burritos. I am Mexican and I go to Mexico all the time, sometimes just to eat tacos so I think I know what I'm talking about. I go to the Atlantic one because it's closest to L.A. and it's not too far off the 91 FWY. The Downtown Long Beach one is the first, I used to ride my bike there after my Dad discovered it in 1981. The Belmont Shores one is great, the Sunset Beach one on PCH and Warner is great, but the Cypress one is less than great, with service to match. Some of the O.C. ones have different owners. The Fullerton one is kind of fancy with an underappreciated cocktail bar. Get the carnitas plate the first time you go there and then venture out from there. There are usually a couple cops in the Atlantic one but they actually have to eat just like civilians, and they are often good barometers for this kind of food. To be honest, I don't really like Mexican food. I came here with my boyfriend and his mom for lunch and I wasn't too excited about coming here because I've tried Super Mex at another location and didn't like it so much. I thought I would hate this place because it looks more of a hole in the wall type of place compared to a nice restaurant style like the other place was. You can tell this was one of the first Super Mex restaurants. I got the Super burrito, which is huge btw, and shared it with my boyfriend. Even sharing it we were super full. The burrito was OK, nothing memorable. You get free chips and salsa here and it is soooo good. They're definitely fresh and the salsa here is so delicious, just a kick of spice. They refill it for you when you're almost out. Which leads me to their service. Their service is the reason why they are getting 5 stars from me, which I don't give out often. The servers are so nice and quick to refill your drinks and chips. We ordered one burrito and they put it on separate plates for us without even asking. We also wanted an orchata to go so instead of charging us for it they just counted it as a refill. I would come back here again just because they're so friendly here and the service is really excellent. read more

I've been going to this Super Mex for almost 20 years. The service is excellent, the food is authentic, and the atmosphere is family-oriented. I fondly remember meals there when my son was a toddler and making a big mess -- the staff just took it in stride -- he's now in his twenties. I've taken several friends from out of town to the restaurant and when they return for a visit, they always ask to go back to Super Mex. Horrible service!! Didn't get greeted as we entered, 10 of us.. including kids. Fine. No prob. But didn't get helped, no chips & salsa, no water or even drink orders for bout 10 mins! Really. That's freakin long. I would've left but it was my sister's birthday. Place was dirty. Had to ask for menus. Had to wave for drinks. Never coming back. The extra 10 minute drive to 2 Near "El Toritos" would be well worth it.. same prices any way. I do NOT recommend this place. And very disappointed. + little a** burrito too read more
