If you are thinking about planning a trip here, I want to let you know about the high risk you are taking in booking here. My family and I flew from across the country and were supposed to stay 5 nights. Tropical Storm Elsa was forming the day we were leaving and I called the Sunset Cottages and asked what the plan was. They assured me that they are "monitoring the storm, but are not worried". We finally arrived after a long day of travel and about 12 hours later were told that the Coast Guard has made the decision to evacuate all of Sunset Key to Key West. The disclaimer they don't put on their website: Since they are a private island, the Coast Guard makes the evacuation calls, and will evacuate for even a tropical storm. We were to evacuate 48 hours before the storm even hit. They put us up at the Opal Key, which - while has nice rooms - has no beach, a very small pool, and we were split up in hotel rooms rather than a cottage... We definitely would have never flown across the country to stay there. The storm only lasted about 6 hours, but my family was so upset because the vacation was not what we had imagined nor saved up for. I just wish I had received honesty about the chances of evacuation when I called the hotel, or it was posted online. And to top it all off, I did not receive any sort of credit... I somehow owed about $500, which I believe if you're calling yourself a 5 star resort there should be some sort of compensation for the inconvenience. But they obviously believe otherwise. **I especially would like to alert anyone who is thinking about getting married here that in my opinion is way too much of a risk! read more

What a beautiful and special hotel. We came for a 3-night vacation from Miami with our 4 kids. We stayed in one of the 3 bedroom cottages, and it was just perfect. There was a special greeter at the Margaritaville hotel, who showed us the way to the Sunset Key ferry. It leaves every half hour from the main pier for the quick and easy ride to the hotel. Bruce met us as we disembarked, and his warm and gracious personality made for the perfect greeting (in fact, every time we saw Bruce during our stay he always said hello and remembered us). After explaining a little about the hotel amenities, Bruce walked us to our cottage and showed us around. There was plenty of room and even a kitchen. We loved how close the pool and beach were, while we still had privacy and our own space. We loved Flippers the pool bar, where we ate our first dinner and lunches. The bartenders were fantastic and the food and drinks we good too. We loved the hourly snacks at the pool, everything from fresh fruit at noon to the ice cream man at 3. We especially loved the adorable picnic basket delivered to our cottage every morning around 8am, full of (warm) croissants and muffins, fruit, jelly and butter, and juice. With the complimentary coffee in the kitchen, it couldn't have been better. We ate one night at Latitudes, which is beautiful and has the best place to watch the sunset. We played hours of corn hole and skipped rocks on the beach. We went parasailing one afternoon. We did not get around to fishing off the pier or any snorkeling adventures, so we will have to return. Even our teenagers loved it and took many social media worthy pictures :-) read more

We had a beautiful experience until 2 hours before check-out. I looked out the window of my v expensive cottage to see a golf cart with housekeepers waiting outside to turnover my rooms. I received a semi hostile call well over an hour prior to check-out time asking me when we were leaving. Very unusual and unnecessary since we were already packed and nearly ready to go. I wrote management a message later to express my disappointment and they never responded. Mind you, we had spent several thousand dollars at the resort and had a wonderful experience until they ruined it at check-out. Very short sighted on management's part. Makes no sense. The facilities on Sunset Key are great, getting there is another story.. upon our arrival we checked into the Margaritaville resort facility, NO bell hope was willing to take/ transport our luggage to the island. We took our own luggage in tow, NOT something you expect to do when paying this price for a room. REALLY SHITTY! Tonight we elected to spend some time on the town the ferry was suppose to be at DOCK 29.. after waiting over an hour it was identified that Dock 31 is where the ferry docked. A REALLY BIG ISSUE WHEN THR LEFT HAND HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE RIGHT HAND IS DOING, can I say TOTAL CLUSTER FUCK! not impressed read more

We spent a week at this Westin "resort." Turns out "Sunset Key" is not the real name, the real name is Tank Island, just to highlight what a facade this location is. These cottages were built on top of dredged up sea floor so that the massive cruise ships can come and dock between you and Duval Street, definitely not romantic. The Navy used this landfill for holding the oil tanks, hence the true name Tank Island. The few guests we spotted were geriatric and probably are not filling out the favorable reviews you read here, so I highly suspect all the glowing reviews are fake and invented by the marketing machine from the Westin. In fact, I am pretty sure the reservation manager spends his time filling out fake reviews rather than helping customers. We travel quite a bit to Europe, Caribbean islands, Hawaii over the last couple of years and generally stay at five star properties. At the price we paid ($1000 per night), we were sadly misled on several points. First, I booked through Starwood SPG. I was told we were getting 35% off rack rate, so with taxes, a bargain $1,000 USD per night for 5 nights for a partial ocean view cottage. As a Gold SPG member I asked for upgrade at check in if available, but this request was not honored, the girl that checked us in wouldn't even check availability. I was tired from the flight, so I didn't make a fuss. Well, just out of curiosity, I checked online for the rate and found that I could have booked online through Westin and got $850 per night. So I was charged over the internet rate when I was suppose to get a "deal?" When I brought this to the attention of the front desk and then SPG, nobody is sympathetic, what would you expect, I am the sucker that got scammed. Then the Sunset Key Westin property itself, quality of Comfort Inn service dressed up in Westin garb. At the Four Seasons everyone smiles and knows your name. Here, everyone seems miserable, no smiles. The lone person "tending" the beach acts like he is doing you a favor and wish you would leave his beach and the dreadful pigeons that litter the small sad beach. The 50% gravel 50% sand beach is not combed at all, littered with cigarettes everywhere, really quite disgusting. We spent ten minutes and left. Nobody goes to Key West for the beach anyway, but this stretch of gravel is not worth walking on. The sand was supposedly brought in from the Bahamas, of course they had to, since this resort is built on landfill without natural sand. Well, over time the imported sand has eroded. Then the Sunset Key Westin cottages ... there is a serious ant problem. Small little critters came to visit as we checked in. They swarmed to any residue toothpaste, which was leftover from the last occupant. This tells you how much house keeping pays attention to details. We have a video of the ants swarming, which I will post to You Tube later. We called the front desk about the ants right away, and the girl was not surprised. But to our dismay, they also did not take care of it during our stay so the ants visited reliably every night. The Sunset Key Westin cottage is stocked with junk food at the standard gouge rate, just pick something up at CVS on Front Street and save a few hundred bucks. The room service and the restaurant Latitude are very average hotel food, the expected gouge price, with view of the neighboring petite landfill (just check Google earth to see for yourself), better you hike on to the island and have a real meal at A+B. The positives ... the ferry captains are nice guys, the pool is fairly empty as the island appeared fairly sparsely occupied. I learned this lesson the hard way, the waste of money really pales against the waste of time I spent at Sunset "Tank Island" Keys. The sun set on this mistake of land development sometime ago. Buyer beware of this Sunset Key Westin! read more

If you are the sort of person who has never been at a real 4 or 5 star resort and can be duped into believing that geographical separation from the crowds of Key West is somehow exclusive, then this is the place for you. Pay too much, take the little ferry boat out to the private island, and sit in your exclusive cottage. They all have picturesque names, not room numbers, so if you call the concierge, they won't know where you are. Like when you call because a toilet is running, you have ants in the bathroom, or the in room safe does not work. You can call. Or not. There is no real customer service so it doesn't matter. Forget something? No worries. You can get crappy minibar quality stuff. Want a meal? The one restaurant on the island serves decent food at New York fine dining prices, about $100 per person all in. Oh, but you will get the breakfast basket in the morning. A couple of cold muffins and some underripe fruit. Enjoy. We will be at a real resort. In fairness, I must now add that they sent two guys out at night to replace the safe. After two days and three phone calls to two "concierges". Easier than what we went through to get room service. And perhaps the most annoying thing about the place is that the only way to get off the island is the ferry, which only runs every half hour. Kind of ruins vacation spontaneity, but hey, it's so exclusive. . . read more

Three years ago this place was perfect. The service was impeccable. The second time is a different story. Around the pool for 4 hours and the landscapers still haven't stopped mowing, edging, blowing and cutting my husband's leg. There have been more excuses and apologies for not getting things done and corrected then I have time to disclose. Management here is awful. For the money spend don't expect the service to translate. Apologetic and impersonal is more like it but no real concern, just more excuses. read more

This is a great place off the main island. Secluded enough to not feel hassled by the hustle and bustle but close enough to be included in the great food and fun whenever you want. Danilo and Aaron at the pool bar are incredible. Great service, great conversation, all around great people to hang out with. The beach service, on the other hand, could use some work. Victor seems overwhelmed working the beach by himself and takes a long time to take/bring drink orders. I felt like he was avoiding me a lot of the time. Overall a great place to stay. Definitely made better by Danilo and Aaron at the pool! Loved hanging out with them. read more

Lattitudes restaurant has amazing food. It is very pricey, but if you are looking for a beautiful view, excellent service, and gourmet food this is the place for you! The lobster tail was served out of the shell and was incredibly fresh. The crab bisque is thick and creamy with amazing flavor. The wedge salad was fresh and crisp with excellent dressing. The beers were served cold. The view of the sunset while dining was amazing! The restaurant was Immaculate. Book a reservation, you will need one. Whatever time your reservation is is what time you catch the boat over there. The boat is located behind the Westin hotel. read more

Swank. Luxurious. Comfortable. Big emphasis on comfortable. Overall an entirely ridiculous place to spend a vacation (read: luxurious), but straight comfortable. The beaches, the hot tubs, the fishing rods on demand (thanks Phillip!), the restaurant. Oh, the restaurant. Normally I would be turned off by Christmas-light-wrapped palm trees (sounds kitschy, no), but not here. For some reason Sunset Key pulls it off. Maybe it's the white herons stalking nearby. Maybe it was the spinner shark...spinning out of the water. Or maybe it was the ridiculously thick, nutty and rich coffee each morning. Whatever the reasoning, Sunset Key killed it. read more

Expensive but worth every dollar! My husband and I went on our honeymoon here. They greeted us at the dock and walked us to our cottage. Made us feel very cared for. The island is beautiful. Just stayed at sunset key cottages in a two bedroom Cottage that was beautifully appointed. It was very serene which is exactly why I chose it the restaurant latitudes was delicious. All of the staff was fantastic with the exception of one beach attendant. Been 4 years since I reviewed this very special place in Key West. I think I may have put it on the map. Not just from my review but I tell everyone about SSK. I'm a regular. I make this a destination no less than twice a year enjoying the November Power Boat Races and then back in March or April for more fun. I'm an angler at heart and there aren't many better spots in the US for fly fishing, light tackle, offshore or inshore than KW. Since coming down in the mid-90's I have only stayed at one other hotel. I just will not go if I can't stay here. Pricey yes, but do the math. Come down with another family and share a cottage. I usually stay in one of the 4 bedrooms and fill each one. Kitchens are great, bedrooms very large, big decks, and incredible landscaping at the cottages. Latitudes is one of the finest restaurants and settings in Florida. Sunsets are spectacular; service impeccable and chef Todd is amazing. All you have to do is ask here. They just simply aim to make your stay perfect. The pool is nice and shallow for kids, but not for doing laps. See Jan or Louis for drinks at Flippers! Wake up in the morning for a unique breakfast basket of baked goods and fruits delivered to your deck by 8AM. Travel on the Island Time Ferry for 5 minute ride to KW. Get away from the madness and come back to SSK. Only drawback are the homeowners on the island. They are not the friendliest bunch. This is also a perfect spot to reward employees, do corporate events and extend! Has a beach and we love fishing off the marina dock. Shark and Tarpon right there. Do not go there though as I like it to myself. read more

I love it here. I stayed in the Sunset Key cottages...just a 6 minute (or so) boat ride from Key West, FL. Excellent service, friendly staff, total seclusion. Every morning, the staff delivers the best muffins and juice you'll ever have in a basket. Every evening, for turn-down service, they leave a fun postcard and chocolates. The beds are amazingly comfortable and there is even up-to-date plumbing on this island! There is a pool (heated) with hot tubs that is the perfect place for lounging all day (including hot waitstaff walking around throughout the day giving out fruit kabobs!). There is also a beach here (duh). The view of the sunset is indescribable (they named the island after the sunset...that should tell you something!). There are no cars on this island...therefore no traffic noise! The boat is up 24 hours a day to and from Key West...so you are never more than 10 minutes away from a party or relaxation. I HIGHLY recommend this place for any special occasion. Totally worth the money. read more

This establishment is definitely the best place you can stay around Key West (It is also the only one that has a beach with sand). My wife and I stayed here for a week and the accommodations were amazing. The cottages are spacious, cozy and clean. It feels great to have a separate living room, kitchen, multiple balconies and a bedroom. The bed was very comfortable and all appliances were brand new. As far as the resort goes , the grounds and surroundings are well maintained and it feels big while it is a small resort. Free offerings of breakfast baskets, chocolate delights and rum tastings are part of their luxury collection perks that definitely sweetens your stay. Taking the boat to the island adds an additional level of serenity, yet it is only a 5-10 minute ride and accessible 24/7 if you fear being too isolated away from main land. The two restaurants on the island offer decent food options. However if your stay is going to be longer than a couple days, the menu starts to feel limited (did I mention you can do grocery shopping and stock up your fridge in your own kitchen in the cottage). A dinner date at latitudes is worth just for the views alone, and the food is not exceptional but good. For activities there is beach volleyball, and tennis and a great size swimming pool that is shallow on all ends (3ft). For water sports you have to take the boat to main land and where the boat docks you can rent a jet ski to take an island tour, or book a snorkeling trip or parasailing. All in all this establishment offers a very comfortable cottage to have the comfort of home with the amenities of a 5 star resort. Key West has amazing restaurants, so if you were to want more food options it is definitely available and it was not a con for us. Being able to walk and lay on the sand and dive in the ocean definitely puts this resort above the competition in that area. Things (food,spa, room service) are on the pricey side on the island, so if you are looking for a bargain stay this will not be for you (the services they provide are quality so although expensive it is fairly priced). I would recommend checking the cottage layouts to book one that will serve your needs (All one bedroom cottages are by pool side so if you want to stay at a cottage on the beach side you have to book a 2 or 3 bedroom one). If you are heading to Key West and want to see the best Sunset views and enjoy privacy in comfort I would recommend booking a cottage on this island. It lives up to its name and I would consider going back to stay here. read more

We just got back from 3 nights here in a 2 bedroom, 3 bath cottage & are already planning on returning. Unlike some reviewers, I did not find it isolating as there were people around, whether checking out the sunset, residents walking their dogs or just having a good time. Our cottage was perfect, absolutely charming in blue & white with rattan, done very casually. Almost everything one could need was there & I can't think of much to change. I would suggest bringing aqua shoes for the very rocky beach & load up your e- reader prior. Even with free wi-fi, mine did not load - oh well... We ate 3 times at Lattitudes & frankly when we had it delivered to our cottage, we enjoyed it best. All staff was helpful & cordial, but the restaurant was busy & we sat for a while but their delivery was prompt & exactly the same. The morning breakfast baskets were like getting a basket from the Easter bunny, full of good things & charmingly presented. I really enjoyed visiting this resort. read more

Every staff person here is wonderful--melissa and jennifer were awesome as well as the people who worked at the beach and all the nice men and women who came to our room. beautiful place...cottages are close together but you never feel crowded. good food. and they bring water and food to your cottage everyday and all the beach chairs and cabanas are free--so the $100 daily fee is totally worth it. we had a lovely time. Let me start by saying that I stayed in an ocean front two bedroom cottage for reference. The view is amazing! I was fully shocked when I first arrived and realized our cottage was actually on the beach, just steps away! The water is warm and beautiful and you can even see many fish it is that clear! The sunsets here are AMAZING maybe the prettiest I have ever seen. I never had an issue with towels at the pool/beach not being restocked and the interior of the rooms is beautiful!! Also the ferry's run quite frequently(every 15 min) so that was never an issue of waiting around trying to get to the mainland. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept. Only criticism is that the pool water is very warm so we did not spend as much time there, however since it is so hot here in general, I am not sure if the resort can do anything to prevent that. In addition to being very clean the staff is friendly and efficient with making sure the room is cleaned at a reasonable time each day. If you want to be truly in the "night-life" at key west this might not be the place for you since it is pretty secluded but for my family who enjoys beach time and was usually back pretty early this was the perfect place for us! We ordered room service for lunch since it would be a hassle to take a ferry over to eat if you plan on wanting to spend the day at the beach and while it took long the food was very good and it is the same food that is served at the pool bar so you do have options for lunch if you want to stay on sunset key. Expensive but worth the money. read more

My Sister & Brothers brought our Father here last year for his 94th Birthday. As a family with several handicap persons, our trip last November was an interesting one. Although The Sunset Key Cottages aren't set up for wheelchair access, the staff went over & beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Maintenance came & set up ramps & ext. cords for scooters. Room Service stocked our frig with the grocery list we provided. As well as leave our morning basket inside for us. The restaurant is 5 stars across the board on their culinary genius & accommodations inside & out of the Dining & Bar area. The lobby always had wonderful refreshing water & great prices on gifts. Didn't do the spa. They don't do pedicures????? Priced higher than others in Key West. Housekeeping brought shower chair & small frig for bedroom downstairs. Every staff member did what they could to help make it an easy stay. Their level of service took this resort to a 6 star for us. We travel all over the country and have many stories about the accommodations. None as great as this one. Even the Ferry staff were wonderful. It was a learning experience for the entire staff and they rose to the occasion and surpassed our expectations. I hope they are ready for us again. We now have reservations for 2-2bedrom one level cottages for a 10 day stay in November to celebrate our Fathers 95th Birthday. The Family is stoked! read more
