We had a wonderful dinner at Sunset Grill in Moab. The restaurant sits up on a hill with beautiful views overlooking the area--perfect for a relaxing evening, though since it was a cloudy night, we didn't catch much of a sunset. The weather was still lovely, and the atmosphere felt special. At first glance, the restaurant doesn't look that big, but it's actually quite deceiving. Once inside, there are multiple rooms and cozy spaces with tables spread throughout, giving it a much larger and more inviting feel than you'd expect from the outside. For drinks, my husband ordered a beer but was a little disappointed that they don't serve any on tap. I tried the Summer Sunset cocktail (Tanqueray Gin, mint, and lemonade), which was light and refreshing, and later enjoyed a dirty martini with dinner. We started with the escargot appetizer. The flavor was good, but the mushroom and sauce overpowered the actual escargot a bit. For entrées, I had the special--Atlantic salmon stuffed with king crab, served with asparagus, rice, a side salad (highly recommend the blue cheese or honey poppyseed dressing), and homemade bread. It was fantastic, even though I'm fairly sure the "king crab" was frozen since it likely came from Alaska. Regardless, it was delicious. My husband had the seared tuna in an amaretto mushroom sauce, which he thought was decent but a bit too sweet for his taste. Luna was able to rest with us while we ate, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. The service was excellent and really added to the experience. Dinner wasn't cheap--about $150 before tip--but overall, the quality, service, and atmosphere made it worth it. read more

Would give it two stars if it wasn't so expensive. Food was mediocre. Medium steak was fully well done and as dry and bland as the licking the Moab sand directly. But it took so long that I didn't bother mentioning it. Not to mention they brought the wrong order the first time. Ambiance was terrible apart from the view. Echoey and loud inside. Kid at the table behind me was watching cartoons with the volume on the whole time. I wasn't going to say anything but somebody who worked there should have. The vibe was very much Applebees on stilts. I'd say drive up and enjoy the view, but there are plenty of drives and hikes with as good or better scenery. Definitely don't bother eating here though. The only reason we came to this restaurant is because my wife is a sucker for a good view. We came from Arches after a whole day of hiking and we were famished! We came right before opening and were the third to be seated. The table was wobbly but it didn't really matter, I asked for a piece of cardboard and it solved the issue. The patio has a nice view overlooking the town of Moab so it was a pretty relaxing. Unfortunately, our server Gio (the one who gave me the cardboard) was not told that we were his table so he never came to our table until about 10 mins later when I asked someone to get our server. We didn't bother with the appetizers and just went with main courses. I ordered a medium rare prime rib with the balsamic vinaigrette for my salad and my wife ordered the chicken Sophia with the bleu cheese for her salad along with a Moscow mule. All the main courses come with a side of bread and a salad. Firstly the house-made dressings are nothing special, my balsamic vinaigrette was average and the salad size was appalling. It comes in a tiny saucer pretty much what you would use for a coffee cup. The bread was amazing though, crunchy crust and chewy inside. Secondly, the main courses were below average. I guess the competition here is so sparse that they're not working too hard to stand out. To be honest, you can get a better tasting steak at a Denny's at half the price. The chicken Sophia was at least decent, it's comparable to Olive Garden's chicken parmigiana. The Moscow mule was average according to my wife, a little light on the booze but that's nothing too surprising. Lastly, the only reason for the extra star was because of a Filipina server who was serving the tables next to us. I guess she heard us speaking Tagalog and greeted us in our native language. She had an amazing sense of humor and we had a nice chat while we were there. I can't remember her name but the bonus star just for you ate!!! In conclusion, the view is beautiful but the food is something you would get in a budget diner and the prices are closer to a mid range steakhouse. The quality does not justify the price point. This place is so fancy and special. The views are gorgeous, though I didn't actually catch the sunset because both times I went there was a wait that I didn't prepare for. They don't take reservations for groups of 2 so I ended up having to sit and wait in a spot that's comfortable but doesn't have a sunset view until they could seat us. The waiting area is very nice and they ended up seating us quicker than they said, but I would recommend planning for a wait if you come here and are hoping to catch the sunset. Regardless, the views of town from above are still beautiful and this place is still worth coming to even if you don't catch the sunset. They have great cocktails here, make sure to ask your serve about what the current specials are. I tried the atomic margarita and the cadillac margarita special they had which they were able to also make spicy for me. The atomic was too sweet and artificial but the spicy cadillac marg was delicious. They also have a solid wine selection. The artichoke bruschetta was to die for, I got it both times I came here and I highly recommend. I also got the salmon for my entree which came with bread and a small salad and the salmon was incredible, I definitely recommend this as well. Finally, for dessert I tried the crème brûlée and the white chocolate cheesecake which were both amazing. Overall this place is incredible. It's certainly expensive, mainly if you get dinner here but when I went with a friend we just got a drink, an app, and a dessert which didn't completely break the bank and it was a very nice treat for us. read more

First timers here and we came for our anniversary. The service was very attendant and very nice, Jorge M. was our waiter and we truly appreciated his hospitality and how very kind he was. He even took our photo for us. So, thank you, Jorge. We had the prime rib and crab with salmon specials. The food was absolutely fabulous and the sunset for ambiance was beautiful. It's a nice historical house made into a restaurant. The restrooms were very nice, the outdoor patio area very pretty and spacious and the views again amazing. In Moab for a couple of days. The town is nice, and the views are spectacular. It was my birthday, so we decided to check out the Sunset Grill for the special night. They don't take reservations, so we waited outside with a nice view of the lower area. After about 15 minutes, we got a table. The inside was full, but we wanted to sit outside anyway. We got waters right away, but it took a while for our server (who looked very busy) to get to us. She was very friendly and helpful. We ordered several drinks, and I had the Atomic Margarita, which literally glowed in the dark -- very fun! No appetizers for us. For entrées, we ordered the pasta, prime rib, strip steak, and the duck for me. We got salads before the meal. Nothing special: a piece of tomato, cucumber, and onion. After a bit of a wait, the food came. It was hot, and the portions were generous. However, most of us agreed it wasn't all that good. My duck had a layer of sauce that looked like it had "set" (too long under a heat lamp?), and it wasn't very moist. The strip steak was cooked correctly but was gristly. The prime rib was also tough and a challenge to chew. For dessert, we split a piece of tiramisu. It was finished with whipped cream and chocolate syrup -- both of which tasted like they came from a can, not fresh. We had really expected a better experience. There is so much to love about the location and the views. Unfortunately, the service was slow (although very pleasant and helpful), and most of the food was a disappointment. I definitely would've gave this place more stars for the view. I had a terrible experience with the service and rude comments from the server. I ordered a prickly pear mag which was average. For my second drink i asked for an espresso martini and they proceeded to being me another prickly pear marg. They took the drink back and said they would just give it to someone else and made me wait to get my actual drink. Then when my new york strip steak came out it was over well done instead of medium. When i asked for ketchup to accommodate because it was so mid it never came out. I ended up using the au jus sauce my bf had. He got the prime rib which he enjoyed. After i asked for the check while my boyfriend was in the bathroom. The server was like I'll wait until he comes out to pay the bill. Which was so rude because me as a female was paying the bill. Here's the good -- stunning location, great scenery, plenty of outdoor seating while you're waiting for your party to get called. Here's the not-so-good -- we were told over the phone that there would be a 5-minute wait for a party of two. We showed up and there was a 40-minute wait for outdoor seating and a 15-minute wait for indoors. We opted for inside, simply because of the shorter wait time. The food was pricey and the presentation was lacking. It tasted alright, but we expected a bit higher quality for the price. Here's the weird -- the interior decor was on the wackier side of eclectic. There was a Dalmatian statue and a weird green lamp and uranium glass in display cases. For the two of us dining, both meals were bland, not cooked well and served on these small plates that looked like they're from a college dining hall. Service was friendly. The atmosphere was lovely and why we came - amazing views of course. But even with the view, would not recommend for a meal, not worth the money you will spend. We were visiting Moab over the holidays and were fortunate enough to find a restaurant open on Christmas Eve. We had some difficulty trying to get through to make reservations but eventually were able to make the arrangements. We arrived a bit early and were able to walk around the restaurant and patio to kill some time while waiting for our table. We were seated at a window table so we could enjoy the beautiful view of Moab from our hilltop perch. Those sitting near the window noticed a bit of a draft so it was fortunate we had jackets to place on our laps. Service was helpful and pretty attentive. Our orders were brought fairly promptly too. Some of our orders were pretty good but some were not but we didn't complain because it was Christmas Eve and they were pretty slammed. I think our group ordered trout, Cajun shrimp and sausage fettuccine and prime rib. I don't want to be overly critical because I understand it was an exceptionally busy night but we still took a chance. Most in the group were satisfied so as long as the majority were satisfied I'm giving them 3 stars. I'm a huge supporter of local businesses so I wish them much luck and success. Aug 25. We came to Moab for the first time in probably 15 years and decided to try Sunset Grill and it did not disappoint. I started off with the shrimp cocktail and my wife tried the French Onion soup. Both were great. For entrees, she tried the trout and I had the honey pecan chicken. Both dishes were great! The service was wonderful and the views from way above Main Street are worth a visit. Overall, 10/10 and would definitely do it again. BTW, there ice tea was some of the best I've ever had. Pricing is reasonable for the quality of food and the view are a bonus. read more

Me and my family first get there and get seated fast, then we ordered some drinks. I was given the wrong drink, very wrong. I ordered a Dr Pepper and got a cocktail. Then, it took literally and hour and a half to get entrees. Two people in my group ordered both medium well stakes, one came well done, the other came rare. Our server then said he'd give us free desert, but perceded to put them on the bill thinking we wouldn't notice. We got half of our check off but still, horrible waiting time, food, and service. I will sadly not be coming back. If you do come, the Pasta Marinara is probably the safest option. Mediocre but fine to eat. read more

While Sunset Grill in Moab offers one of the best views in town, sadly, that's where the positives end. My recent visit was deeply disappointing--especially considering the premium prices and the reputation this place seems to have. I ordered the ribeye and shrimp special, and before placing my order, I asked the server if the steak was thick. He assured me it was. Unfortunately, what arrived at my table was anything but. The steak was extremely thin--far too thin to be cooked to the medium-rare I had requested. Unsurprisingly, it was overcooked and dry. I sent it back, hoping for a better second attempt, but the replacement steak was somehow even worse: tough as leather and nearly inedible. I gave up on the food entirely and opted for a margarita instead. My two-year-old daughter had the kids' prime rib, which, while nothing special, was at least properly cooked and ironically thicker than my adult entrée. My husband had the duck, which was a bit overdone as well, though he said the flavor was decent. The vegetables on the plate were forgettable, the service was polite but not particularly attentive, and the overall meal did not live up to even basic expectations. It's disappointing when a restaurant relies on its view instead of delivering quality food and consistent service. I look forward to returning to Moab--but I won't be returning to Sunset Grill. read more

After a busy day exploring Moab we were a walk in at 6:15 and they were able to seat us. This restaurant had been on our list so we were excited to try it. First of all, what a cool story! Just looking around the restaurant and seeing old photos of the original owner was amazing. We were there as the sun was going down and it was spectacular. Sunset and a cocktail?! Sign me up!! However, I am pointing this out for everyone who is not from Utah, if you drink you have to eat. I did not know that and I'm not hating on the restaurant for that state law, it is what it is. The problem I had was that it took over an hour to have a drink and a dessert. The waitress was the only one working the entire wing of the restaurant so she was spread very thin. Now what we did have, was very good. I will say, the menu is quite limited. The alcohol menu is longer than the food menu which is funny considering you can't drink and not eat in this state. But the service just needs some fine tuning for sure. read more

Very few gluten free options. Prices are very high and they don't allow substitutions. What they call a 50's vibe I call seedy and dirty, especially the bathroom. I won't be back. Came here for a bachelor party with a group of 4. Steaks were not cooked well or high-quality. Super stringy and I got maybe 30 to 40% of actual edible meat off of the cut . It was their prime rib special surf & turf for approximately 60 bucks and I left super disappointed especially for spending that much on a plate. Past that what really threw me off was three servers and a manager had to come over to our table and double check one of our companions IDs that sitting with us ,he was 27. It's just embarrassing and impolite to have to put us on the spot like that and cause everybody on the terrace to look at us as if we're causing an issue when the server couldn't have just done his job and scanned the ID and in the end of it and have to sit there and interrogate us and then have two more people come over until a manager finally came over with ID scanner to confirm it was legitimate. Super unprofessional how they handled it . The view was the best thing definitely wouldn't recommend anybody go there for the food or the service. read more

Stayed next door, or should I say under at the Hyatt place. We were starving after spending the day driving from flagstaff and being at monument valley. Drove up to the restaurant which is located on top of a steep hill overlooking all of Moab. The best location for a restaurant in the area, and breathtaking views from every vantage point. I live in Orange County, and for people in SoCal, it's similar to eating, view wise to Orange hill. It's that good. The food here is really good for the area. My prime rib, which I took a picture of was perfectly cooked and came with a mushroom sauce on top. Was absolutely delicious and started our trip out the right way in the area. Also very kid and family friendly restaurant. Also recommend having the chocolate soufflé. It was perfect ending to dinner. Our service here was also outstanding. Came frequently to check on us. About the only thing I would change, is that the cocktails could be improved. It's hard to get good cocktails in Utah unless you're in SLC. They were decent, and I experimented and tried an off menu cocktail old fashioned with scotch. Probably would stick with a good bourbon since scotch is better drank alone on the rocks. But when our top choice was closed for the entire week and the other place was close for a private holiday party, we decided to check out this place for my Birthday Dinner I thought the history and ambience were great! The drinks and food were awesome! And our waitress, Abby, AMAZING!!! I had no idea we were going to get a history lesson and learn so much! They have the whole story embedded throughout the menu about the rag-to-riches story of Charlie Steen. We got there around 6pm, just in time to watch the sky change over the rocks. Ordered drinks, my Raspberry Margarita (the special) was perfect with the colors the sky was changing to, really set the mood. My husband was happy with his Old Fashioned. I ordered the Honey Pecan Chicken and it was like dinner and dessert. Not, overly sweet, but done just right. And the asparagus were great size and cooked to perfection. Homemade bread was a great addition. I found this place delightful! I would eat there again! Abby was a great waitress! Been coming to Moab for years, I've never had the opportunity to visit Sunset grill until this past trip wrapping up Easter Jeep Safari week. The food, drinks, service, and entire experience was great. If you are coming after sunset in the spring or fall, bring an extra coat if you plan on sitting outside on the patio as it cools off quickly. Please don't waste your money on this place. We were seated at 6pm. We saw guests that were waited on that came in after us. It took forever to get served and they said they were out of the dinner item two in our party ordered. After finally getting our meal I found that the meat I ordered was totally inedible. When I say it was tougher than shoe leather I mean I couldn't even chew the first bite. It did not help that it was dryer than Moab sand. When we said that we were disappointed we were told by our server that it wasn't her fault. She said that she just worked there. I don't know when I've been this disappointed in a meal or service provided. It was so loud that we couldn't carry a conversation with our friends at the table. We had terrible time for dinner at this restaurant i ordered French onion soup for an appetizer and it tastes like watered down beef broth with like only two pieces on onion and a little bread and cheese on top. My dinner arrived before the nasty French onion wtf you pay for the view not the horrible food the serve and that was way overpriced the steak wasn't cooked to order for my wife and they wanted to give me my dinner alittle later and I sent it back. The waiter did come back to collect. No manager came to our table to apologize for thier horrible food. I do not and will not reccomend this overpriced place to anyone.
