I have to say the food was just ok nothing special and I have had much much better. I would not go back for the chicken parm, But because the service was so good I will go back and try something else. My wife and I look forward to dining at Sunny Jim's every 1-2 times a year we can get back to Pittsburgh, so that made tonight's visit to the tavern with our family particularly disappointing. Truly poor service, and subpar execution in the back of the house. We arrived about 6pm, having decided to go tonight for the Wednesday BBQ special. The kitchen had run out of the special options even by 6:00 (it's obviously popular, I get it), but we didn't find that out until we'd been seated for about 20 minutes and not even received all of our drinks by then (the place wasn't even half full). The server just sort of laughed when she finally told us this. You'd think that when there's a huge color monitor sign outside the restaurant advertising the special - you know, the thing that got us and probably lots of others in the door tonight - there's a reasonable expectation it would still be available by the time you go in, or at the very least, we'd be advised soon after arrival. And the sign was STILL advertising the special when we left 90 minutes later. Why didn't the server tell us this when she first greeted us? Why wasn't the sign changed when the kitchen ran out? Throughout dinner, the server was absent for 15-20 minute intervals, so it was hard to let her know about mistakes in our orders, and when I tried to catch her attention once to get a water refill, she jumped like she'd never seen me before. Meanwhile, we noticed two other servers were taking care of fewer tables in the room and making the rounds much quicker. A couple of us ordered the strawberry salad with feta and bacon. The feta was absent from both, and so we asked the server about it. After about 20 minutes, we FINALLY saw the server again, had to flag her down before passing up our table again, and remind her about the feta. She again chuckled and said, oh yeah, they ran out of it. (Not sure why that was funny.) WHY didn't the kitchen advise the server of this, so she could offer us a substitution or some other option? That is such a simple and routine function for a server. There were other errors - wrong dressing brought with another salad, a burger cooked well-done when ordered medium, slow/forgotten water refills. Simple stuff that shouldn't be hard to get right, and individually, not the worst thing if missed. But the sum of all problems tonight made for a pretty awful experience. After a certain number of mistakes, it was obvious there was no point in calling them out. Again, we have always looked forward to our visits to the tavern, for the great food, atmosphere, and service. But if our experience tonight reflects the new standard of service and quality at Sunny Jim's, we definitely won't be back. read more

Drive past all the time but can't believe I never tried before. Going to definitely add to rotation. Staff is super friendly. Smoked wings were super flavorful and cooked nicely. The $2 taco Tuesday was a bit forgettable but the blackened salmon PGH style salad was cooked to perfection and was a great pairing that I wouldn't have ever thought of. Ehhh wasn't too impressed. Ordered a Cuban sandwich w/ fries and an order of chicken tenders w/ fries for takeout. Cuban was ok. Wasn't terrible, but wasn't anything I'd bother ordering again. Chicken tenders were not good at all. Severely overcooked, burnt oil taste. Dry and chewy. Fries went in the trash. Could have been due to the fact that we ordered takeout and they steamed a bit in the box. Probably better fresh. Feel like I'd have better luck eating at the restaurant. Looking back at the photos I've uploaded, it appears that I've ordered the chicken panini with mixed vegetables before. The veg are always over cooked but flavored well. Tried the Friday Night Prime Rib Dinner. The beef was flavorful but was a little tough. I trimmed a lot of fat off, but I guess that is expected. The dinner comes with two sides. After ordering it took the waitress almost 15 minutes to tell us that the ribs were unavailable. Ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich instead. All of a sudden our missing waitress shows up and takes the credit card from the other waitress and charges us $33. In looking at the two checks, apparently they forgot to charge for one drink. Stopped at Sunny Jim's on Camp Horne Rd. for lunch and to use a gift card that we had been given about a year or so ago. When the bill came we were told that the gift card was old and no longer valid. A year old with no expiration date??? When we asked why, we were told their system wouldn't process it. Again we noted that there wasn't an expiration date on the card and pointed out that there is a federal law that states if there is no expiration date, the card IS valid and must be accepted. There wasn't a manager available, so we told the employee who addressed our concern and stated that she is the owner's daughter, that we would pay the difference between the gift card balance & the bill's total, which we did. She then stated that the waitress would be responsible for the gift card amount if we didn't pay. We then pointed out, since Sunny Jim's received the money for the gift card in the first place, it would be wrong for them to make the waitress pay it, aside from the fact that this is an egregious business practice on the part of Sunny Jim's. As we were heading to the door and she was returning to the kitchen, she loudly remarked to anyone in earshot that we were a-holes & next time we should go to McDonald's. Decent food at okay prices. This place is extremely popular in the area, and I can understand why, but the food isn't really something worth writing home about. I ordered online on Uber Eats and got to try the cheesesteak/hoagie and a side of coleslaw. You get to order one of many sides for free along with your order of an entree or a sandwich. A few of the potential side options include soup (for an up charge), cottage cheese, apple sauce, fries, chips, baked potatoes, vegetables, salad, and so on. I thought the coleslaw was quite good. Creamy, vibrant, and just overall very satisfying. Getting it as a free side was nice. It was very creamy but a bit sweet as well (also some carrots). The steak hoagie was pretty substandard. It did not contain much cheese, and the little bit of cheese it did have was not very flavorful. They also did not have mushrooms. The bread was thick and not that toasty. The steak was chewy and relatively flavorless. Price was okay for the portion. All in all, the food wasn't that great, but it wasn't bad either. I thought they made a great coleslaw and the portion was fantastic for that slaw! Definitely recommend that. But, the hoagie itself wasn't that flavorful. read more
