I ordered buffalo wings & he ordered the short ribs Mac & Cheese. The food came out promptly despite it being very busy! I applaud the team for having a great operation! Hal's has some truly great bar food, and I hesitate to just call it bar food because their menu has SO many interesting options. My husband and I stopped in for a late-ish dinner a few weekends ago for the first time. We were pleased to see how busy it was, and we were seated very quickly. The space is somewhat bifurcated into a dining area and a bar area, but it's still one cohesive room, so it does get a bit loud (we did not mind!) during your meal. I tried the smoked turkey burnt ends panini, which was exceptionally tasty. The smoked feta and the smokey turkey pieces were so delicious, and the pickles were a great compliment. I also enjoyed the sweet potato fries quite a lot! My husband said the wings were great, and I would consider him to be a wing expert. All of our food came out very quickly, despite it being so busy! It was a really fun ambiance and had great energy, and our server was so friendly throughout our meal. We were too full to try dessert, but I want to return to try other menu items and a sweet treat. Stopped into Hal's with family and had a nice experience overall! It was pretty busy when we arrived, and they had the Pirates game on TV, which added to the lively atmosphere. I am so disappointed. I had a terrible experience a while back and said I would never come back. I finally did, and loved it. The food, the servers, everything was great. My friend and I would make a point to stop once in a while after work for a martini that usually were soo good. I bring my family and friends bragging about it. I would always tell people to stop for a martini and their amazing soup. But then. We stopped tonight. We sat at the bar table for quite a while before we were acknowledged. We finally ordered our drinks. After they were done, the bartenders and servers were so entertained by the guys at the end of the bar they couldn't pay an ounce of attention to their other customers. We waited and waited. We decided to go to the bar to ask for a drink. After making eye contact, the bartender looked away and continued talking to the boys. My friend kindly said excuse me can we order drinks. They laughed and rolled their eyes. A while later, We got our drinks after she slammed them down. So we then asked for our check. She added 20% gratuity for TWO PEOPLE! I quite literally tip over that even when I'm pissed off. But she didn't say a word. Just added it and walked away. This time, I'll never go back. If I drank and ate like a dickhead everyday, I would totally come here at least once a week We sat outside since it was nice. Seating was good, inside was packed but tons of seating The French onion soup was actually pretty fucking awesome. Packed full of onions, bread and loaded with cheese. PLUS it was cooked in a ramekin which all French onion should be. Tater tots ass, just a frozen bag from the store. The wings, two positives about these. One, the chicken itself was meaty. Two, fried SUPER well. A bonus, they were $1 a wing for wing night. Negative here is that the sauces were pretty subpar. The spicy park tasted like a bottle of Frank's and the Fiery Raspberry gave me spicy BBQ. Not a BBQ guy with wings either. I am told their black and gold is solid though. Bad sauce on a good wing is like having sex with a condom. That layer is covering the full potential of something great. Either way you're still gonna eat because you're horny I would actually come back in the future IF I want wings on a Wednesday and didn't want to drive more than 10min. I went here for my sons birthday. my son choose the location for the meal. We got there and where seated immediately. The person who sat us was very nice and friendly. I ordered a hamburger with fries and a french onion soup. The food was good not the best but very good What set this place apart from other places at least for me was the service. The gal who served us was amazing. She was super helpful super friendly and very attentive. She came back at least 5-6 times maybe more checking to see if we needed anything and that everything was ok. I have to say this was among the best service I have ever received at any restaurant anywhere. I would definitely go back again and I would highly recommend this Hal's Bar and Grill. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Hals. When we first started coming here, I thought the food was pretty good (loved they had vegan/vegetarian options) and the service was overall good. The first couple times we sat at tables then a few times we were at the bar and the service was very fragmented as our visits continued. Things I really like about Hal's. It's close, they serve seitan (bonus star for that) and a few draft craft beers and cocktails. They have a rather extensive bottle list, but I prefer draft if drinking a craft beer. Lots of TVs to view no matter where you may be seated, and an outdoor area that looks inviting. The things I don't like that have steered us to other establishments. The food can be inconsistent. We have ordered pizza here in the past and thought it rather good, then to order it again and think is this the same place? The bartenders have been known to leave for some time and leave you hanging for a refill. I completely get having to leave, maybe you need to use the restroom, or get a drink or supplies. But the place is too busy to have no one there for that long. To go along with this, the bartenders have come off to me as dismissive or annoyed at requests for refills. If I must ask three times for a water refill, I start feeling like I am not being listened to. Overall, cool place to come occasionally especially if I am craving some seitan! But it did lose its initial appeal quickly. read more

My husband and I had a fantastic meal at Hal's Bar and Grill! He ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and they were decadent--juicy, flavorful, and topped with an incredible house sauce that tied everything together perfectly. I had the steak salad with peppercorn dressing, and it was absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked just right and the dressing gave it the perfect kick. I don't eat them but my friends loved them and they looked good. I had the short rib grilled cheese, which was scrumptious. It was so meaty and tender. Loved it and will be dreaming about it. The French fries were very good. My birthday friend had the cod sandwich and fries which she really enjoyed. It looked really crispy and was quite large. First time visiting Hal's since my brother just moved to the area. Place is big with a nice outdoor patio and indoor bar area. Would be great to watch a game here. We were sat in their dining area in a booth. We ordered the nacho grande to kick things off and they did not disappoint, definitely fed between 3-4 people. For my entree I ordered the Italian hoagie and it was very good, the bun was toasted and I could tell the lettuce and onion were fresh. My brother got their wings and they looked very good. Fries and ranch also very good. Our service was kind of hit and miss. We were sat and 45 mins went by and no one came by to check on us lol. We love Hal's. The owner is a terrific community steward and often gives of his time and his enterprise to support fundraisers and other community events. That said, he knows how to run a business. This place is always packed on Friday and Saturday nights with younger folks enjoying the bar area and sports channels and a crowded outdoor dining patio and indoor tables. Expect to wait if you arrive at prime dinner hour. We often go to Hal's because it's close to us and we like their menu variety, beer selection and energy of the place. The waitresses are always fantastic too. This past time, I got a chicken salad and my wife got the Cajun fish which she really liked a lot. My salad was super yummy and really hit the spot. I also really like their wings a lot but was trying to be healthy so I didn't order any this time. We also really liked their steak hoagies too. Check this place out if you enjoy neighborhood joints with a great service team and a nice selection of brews on tap. They also have a bottle shop next door so you can grab a mixed six pack after selecting beer from several huge coolers of every kind of beer you can imagine. I had really high hopes for this place! The menu looked great and there were many other positive reviews for the restaurant. We were expecting to fall in love. The menu has your typical bar food with the exception of some nicer entrees like salmon or Cajun haddock. They have quite a bit to choose from. I went with a party of 4 and everyone got sandwiches. Everyone was happy with the taste, but nothing to write home about. The service was really disappointing. It took awhile for our server to even come to our table for drinks. It really didn't seem that busy, so we were kind of confused why the service was so slow. We hardly saw our waitress after finally getting our drinks. Even the food runner seemed annoyed to be there. We sat in a booth and it felt cramped and uncomfortable. It was really loud and hard to have a conversation over the music. The whole atmosphere was unpleasant. Overall the experience was just ok. From the minute we walked in we were treated rudely by the hostess. She discouraged us to even put our name in because it was going to be 'a long time'. We were quoted 50 minutes. When a table opened up that would be big enough for us (6 and a high chair), she seated 3 people even though within minutes a smaller booth opened up that would have accommodated them. That booth stayed open for 45 minutes. At the one hour mark a group of six people walked in and took the table that should have been ours, even though we were told we were next in line. When I questioned the hostess, she said that it was because they had a reservation. We left and will never return. Treated Matt to a date night last night. We went to Hal's for the first time. Walked in and was told of a fifty minute wait. We went back to the car and waited about 25 minutes for our text. We came back in and there wasn't a hostess around so we waited some more till someone noticed us. We got a table/booth thing in the back. We were greeted by our server (Emma? Emily? Emmie? Something super gen z I can't remember because she was looking at Matt the whole time) and she quickly brought us drinks. I got water and Matt got 2 bloody Maria's. He said they were good. We were ready to order and whatshername came over and just took our app order and ran off. When the app came back she came over and took the food order. I got wings and a pierogie and short rib flatbread, and Matt got wings and cod. Now here comes the waiting. The bar was full but the dining room was over half empty. The couple beside us got sat after our appetizer and was out the door and their table bussed and clean before we got our dinner. It was approximately 48 minutes till we got our food. And no sign of whatshername in that timeframe. Oh well. Staffing issues? Whatever. Just come talk to me. I digress. When we finally got our food, well, some of our food, it was brought by another server. We were missing my flatbread. When whatshername came over we asked where it was and she came back with "they must still be working on it". Hmm. An appetizer that takes 50+ minutes to make? You guys are super swanky. *eyeroll* don't BS me. She forgot. Again, I digress. The flatbread was out in 45 seconds and good. Everything was good. The pretzels, the cod, the wings and the flatbread, albeit the "sour cream drizzle" could have been more of a drizzle and less of a covering, and they def could have used some salt and pepper on the tables. Again, I digress. It was still good. When it came to the bill, I felt like I got the upper hand. Whatshername has basically worshipped Matt since we sat down. When she asked Matt if she could bring the bill and he said "ask her she's paying!" You could see that she got nervous about her tip. But even if you give me garbage service, you're still here to pay your bills, so she got her deserved 20%. If I could see her again I'd remind her that some women make more money than their significant others. Again, I digress. Good food. Crap service. I really want to like this place... the vibe and energy is top notch... but the service in the bar area sucks. It just does... maybe because I'm older, the bartenders, who all skew in their 20's, are indifferent. That happens in real life, for certain... but in the service industry, those are the customers who will tip better - or post reviews like this if you feel ignored. First, get rid of the damn scan to see a beer menu. They share a spot with the bottle shop next door, and trying to find what is on tap in that list of everything else is ridiculous. Print out a menu. Second, when somebody requests a food menu, stop back in a few minutes to see if the customer wants to order. I got the menu and sat here a half hour, and not a soul approached to take my order. Ridiculous. The food here is good. The draft beer selection is mehhh and in exciting at best. But the service is near the bottom for north hills establishments... and frankly, has been since Covid. They can and should do better... but it seems like they don't care. read more

I absolutely LOVE Hal's! My first experience going there was a few years ago, and we have returned on a regular basis. One time that stuck out to me as to why I love it so much is when we were attending a funeral of a close friend of my husbands, and between viewings, the family wanted to go to Hal's for dinner. It was a Sunday, and last moment, so we didn't think we could arrange something quickly. My husband called and whoever he had spoken to worked quickly, and when we all arrived about 10 minutes later, they had already cleared an area for us. We weren't sure of the total count, and as more family joined, the waitresses didn't fret, but quickly helped seat them and take their orders. There was a lot going on, but the staff didn't become flustered, and took excellent care of every single member of the family. I had only been to Hal's once before, and had found the food to be delicious, and the Bartenders to be very friendly and prompt. I have ASD and don't drink and can't deal with obnoxious loud drunks, and Hal's doesn't have that kind of atmosphere at all. It's very laid back, but not uptight, and because of that, we enjoy our time. Further, Hal is such great guy! No matter how busy it is, he's always out saying hello and working right along side his staff. My husband- as well as many friends and family- are regulars and have gotten to know him very well. i havent been to hal's in a bit but i have always liked this place...lively crowd...good ambiance...friendly staff...the owner almost always seems to b around, a very respectable draft beer and bottle list...and their attached bottle shop usually has a few offerings one cant find elsewhere...aside from sharp edge (belgian beer bar), where else in pittsburgh can u find all 3 chimays in 1 location? and their regular hot buffalo wings...my god...some of the very very best in pittsburgh...perfect heat, good-sized wings, came out crispy (without having to order them "xtra crispy")...up there with the pittsburgh wing giants...thankfully i came to my senses and spared one for a pic! read more
