    a sign for a bakery
    Anita L.

UPDATED 06/20/07: WOW I never thought yelp's exposure was getting this wide. This week, I've been getting a whole bunch of PMs from various sources regarding yelp. One of those was from Sunflour Bakery's owner Kathy who asked me to go into her store so I could give her some opinion regarding her products. When I arrived she immediately was concerned about the review I wrote (see below) and how I didn't like their cookies. Well... I told her that the cookies on that particular day were not good. I told her that I did give her cake a great review though. So Kathy stood up and grabbed one of the decorated cookies from the display and asked me to try it. I opened the package and took a bit off. Hey, it was a sugar cookie with frosting. For a sugar cookie, it was good. Then she nudged us to try the chocolate muffin. Well, for something which had no dairy in it, was vegan, organic, gluten-free etc etc, it was great. The muffin was moist and had wonderful texture. Same with the other one (I didn't get the name of that one) with the swirl in it. I told Kathy "hey these are good, but the one I had when I wrote the original review weren't". As I was told, they do not specialize in cookies, but rather, their focus is on wholesale. Kathy said she was not too concerned about promoting the retail side of it. They do get some foot traffic, but their main focus is on the catering side: wedding cakes, birthday cakes, breads which are sold in stores such as Mother's Market etc. They are the ONLY Kosher bakery in the whole of Orange County. Basically, Kathy was concerned about my less than favorable review, but hey, I didn't give it 1 or 2 stars. I gave it 3 stars. However, I'm impressed with a business owner who took the time to find out what her customer(s) were not happy with and tried to rectify the situation. Plus, the things we sampled today were pretty good. I'm upping my review. 4 stars for the products available in the store. 5 stars for filling a niche market not served by any other business. 4.5 stars total. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tucked away in a small street amidst a residential area, it was pretty hard to find and even with instructions, we weren't quite sure if we were in the right area. Lil guy was attending a birthday party here so we tagged along. The bakery specializes in cookies and this time of year, in gingerbread houses too. We bought some of the cookies and they weren't all that great in taste however, to be fair, the birthday cake they baked was awesome. The birthday party comprised of plain cookies and the kids would decorate them. They were given baker's hats to wear while decorating the cookies. The kids got bored after about 45 mins and then started running around hitting each other with balloons. The concept is good (kinda like the one I had for lil guy at those paint your own pottery places) but only in theory. The 3 stars is for the cake.

    Best all natural I've tasted

The best all natural bread i have eaten in a while. I love to eat healthy and try new foods and experience new foodie restaurants as much as I can just to enjoy a simple life with food however I am a diabetic at the low end where it can be reversed but every once in a while I will like many many slip up and eat tasteful carbs lol.. its just life and we like what we like but we just have to eat certain foods in moderation . I am so guilty right now because I can't even show a picture of the bread because I ate it all‍

When we ordered the cinnamon roll, there was no option to heat it up, so we thought they would have done it already. When it was served, it was rock solid. So, we asked them to heat it up. However, after a few minutes, it still wasn't that gooey and the inner core was still pretty tough. Perhaps they could have warmed it up so that it was evenly softened. Overall, the cinnamon roll was alright. It was a brioche roll so you would think it might be lighter and fluffy, but ours was pretty dry. However, the cream on top was insanely good. It carried the roll. The hazelnut twist was kind of what you would expect. A twisted pastry but with a hefty amount of hazelnut-chocolate spread thru the layers. We sat in a little nook, where there was a magnetic black board, where there were word tiles you could rearrange in any way. It was a nice place to just look around at all the sentences the community wrote. Chess tables were also available as extra seating. Overall, the service was good, but could be better when warming up pastries, so that the customer can enjoy them properly!

I've been a regular here at Eller since opening and I've always loved coming in for their coffee,…read morepastries and bread. I haven't been to Eller in the last couple months until this Morning. I've been told that there's new ownership and changes with ingredients (which doesn't bother me) yet everything tastes and looks terrible now. Croissants have huge gaping holes, there's a jalapeño cream cheese croissant and it's just a croissant with a block of cold cream cheese in it..., mushy carrot cake that's barely fully baked, the only pastry that I really enjoyed was the yuzu blood orange danish. Also the food for breakfast and brunch it's really disappointing... since opening they have had the same exact menu with no new menu items, no creativity and just outright bland it so desperately needs a change. The absolute ONLY reason why I gave this review 3 stars instead of 1 is because of the sourdough country loaves... WOW, I would say it's the best bread in OC and the only reason that I'd come back. So if you're looking for a quality sourdough loaf definitely come in for that.... Other than that stay far away from this place and it hurts me to say that now because I saw such potential in this place.

I really like this place. Their sourdough, loves, cinnamon rolls, chausson aux pommes (they don't…read morehave them anymore) were all excellent. You see everything is made with quality, and with a constant turn around of house made product. It is a cute and quaint spot with limited parking. We came here on a Sunday afternoon, ordered the benedict (perfect poached eggs, hollandaise pretty good), the egg sandwich (on croissant), and the breakfast wrap. The breakfast wrap really surprised me because it was wrapped in a crepe. Very good and tasty. Lattes and coffee are excellent quality. It's not often that I feel a business who does super well should be at 4 stars instead of 5, but I would say for how small this place is, the service is just okay, and I think the prices are quite high for certain things. You will be serviced quickly, at least in the time I've been here, but I think this place has room for improvement - but that's just my opinion. It's good, but I'm not blown away. I would still recommend giving this place a try, because their croissants are wonderful as it the bread - but hard to compete with a few other well known bakeries.

My two favorites are definitely the Celebration Cake and the Saigon Cinnamon. You also can't go wrong with the Huckleberry or the Butter & Salt donut. It's hard to pick a "best" because the quality is just always there, but those are the ones I find myself craving again and again. The staff is friendly every time, and parking is usually pretty easy. I also really appreciate that you can now order ahead and pick up, which makes it so much easier for me since I live kind of far away in North Orange County. If I think about it ahead of time and I know I'm going to be in the area, I'll absolutely place an order before I head over. I always look forward to the seasonal donuts and the collabs, and if you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend checking them out. Their coffee is also delicious, so if you're a coffee lover, you should definitely check it out too. I also heard they've expanded to Santa Monica--so even more opportunities to get your donut fix!

I got the combo, which consists of 4 churros, a hot chocolate and dipping sauce. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to choose the type of hot chocolate but he didn't ask. The churros were made fresh and tasted great except there were some pieces that tasted gummy/still raw. It's crispy and the sugar isn't too sweet. The hot chocolate was pretty good but very sweet. It is also scorching hot. I burnt my mouth twice trying to drink it. The sauce - I wasn't handed or asked what type of sauce I wanted. I had to ask for the sauce, which I was redirected to the ordering counter where there was a stack. Would have been nice if they had just given it to me or asked what I wanted. There's no labels or signs at all and I blindly chose what I assumed to be the cajeta- caramel but it didn't taste like caramel. At first I thought it was expired due to the sour taste, but after tasting it again a few times, it tasted like apple sauce? I'm not sure what it was but it was interesting with the churros.
