    a sign for a bakery
    Anita L.

UPDATED 06/20/07: WOW I never thought yelp's exposure was getting this wide. This week, I've been getting a whole bunch of PMs from various sources regarding yelp. One of those was from Sunflour Bakery's owner Kathy who asked me to go into her store so I could give her some opinion regarding her products. When I arrived she immediately was concerned about the review I wrote (see below) and how I didn't like their cookies. Well... I told her that the cookies on that particular day were not good. I told her that I did give her cake a great review though. So Kathy stood up and grabbed one of the decorated cookies from the display and asked me to try it. I opened the package and took a bit off. Hey, it was a sugar cookie with frosting. For a sugar cookie, it was good. Then she nudged us to try the chocolate muffin. Well, for something which had no dairy in it, was vegan, organic, gluten-free etc etc, it was great. The muffin was moist and had wonderful texture. Same with the other one (I didn't get the name of that one) with the swirl in it. I told Kathy "hey these are good, but the one I had when I wrote the original review weren't". As I was told, they do not specialize in cookies, but rather, their focus is on wholesale. Kathy said she was not too concerned about promoting the retail side of it. They do get some foot traffic, but their main focus is on the catering side: wedding cakes, birthday cakes, breads which are sold in stores such as Mother's Market etc. They are the ONLY Kosher bakery in the whole of Orange County. Basically, Kathy was concerned about my less than favorable review, but hey, I didn't give it 1 or 2 stars. I gave it 3 stars. However, I'm impressed with a business owner who took the time to find out what her customer(s) were not happy with and tried to rectify the situation. Plus, the things we sampled today were pretty good. I'm upping my review. 4 stars for the products available in the store. 5 stars for filling a niche market not served by any other business. 4.5 stars total. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tucked away in a small street amidst a residential area, it was pretty hard to find and even with instructions, we weren't quite sure if we were in the right area. Lil guy was attending a birthday party here so we tagged along. The bakery specializes in cookies and this time of year, in gingerbread houses too. We bought some of the cookies and they weren't all that great in taste however, to be fair, the birthday cake they baked was awesome. The birthday party comprised of plain cookies and the kids would decorate them. They were given baker's hats to wear while decorating the cookies. The kids got bored after about 45 mins and then started running around hitting each other with balloons. The concept is good (kinda like the one I had for lil guy at those paint your own pottery places) but only in theory. The 3 stars is for the cake.

    Best all natural I've tasted
    Desert L.

The best all natural bread i have eaten in a while. I love to eat healthy and try new foods and experience new foodie restaurants as much as I can just to enjoy a simple life with food however I am a diabetic at the low end where it can be reversed but every once in a while I will like many many slip up and eat tasteful carbs lol.. its just life and we like what we like but we just have to eat certain foods in moderation . I am so guilty right now because I can't even show a picture of the bread because I ate it all‍

When we ordered the cinnamon roll, there was no option to heat it up, so we thought they would have done it already. When it was served, it was rock solid. So, we asked them to heat it up. However, after a few minutes, it still wasn't that gooey and the inner core was still pretty tough. Perhaps they could have warmed it up so that it was evenly softened. Overall, the cinnamon roll was alright. It was a brioche roll so you would think it might be lighter and fluffy, but ours was pretty dry. However, the cream on top was insanely good. It carried the roll. The hazelnut twist was kind of what you would expect. A twisted pastry but with a hefty amount of hazelnut-chocolate spread thru the layers. We sat in a little nook, where there was a magnetic black board, where there were word tiles you could rearrange in any way. It was a nice place to just look around at all the sentences the community wrote. Chess tables were also available as extra seating. Overall, the service was good, but could be better when warming up pastries, so that the customer can enjoy them properly!

The location of…read morethis well-known Japanese/French bakery was unusual in that it's isolated in a corner of the El Camino Plaza. I had expected the business to be in a more high volume area, however a benefit of their corner spot was that the parking lot had plenty of spaces. There's no indoor seating, but outdoor tables were set up along the north and east perimeters of the building. I was by myself at this latest visit, and it was close to the end of the day so the inventory was quite depleted. There was no line at all which was not a surprise. The famous Strawberry Croissants and prepackaged items were on refrigerated display to the left when you walked in. As the service counter rounded a corner, there were more fresh baked goods on display before you reached a register. Across from the registers were shelves containing bags of fresh bread products. I bought a Strawberry Croissant, a Sticky Bun, a Ham and Cheese Croissant, and an Apple Croissant. The quality of the pastry dough was very good, and I could see why the Strawberry Croissant was a favorite with the customers. The croissants were light and flakey, and the powdered sugar added a delicate topping to the strawberry version. If I were to rate on just the Strawberry Croissant, then it would be five stars. My overall rating was downgraded because of the customer traffic flow. The lines can be optimized so that if you wanted to buy a six-pack of the Strawberry Croissants and/or anything prepackaged, then a separate queue should be arranged for those customers. The cafeteria trays were of limited use if you were not getting a large number of items. As you advanced in the queue, other products had to be requested from a worker behind the counter and then those were not placed on the tray. Ultimately, I think they can configure the operation to more efficiently handle the higher volume periods of the day.

We've been coming here for a couple years now and it pains me to write this…read more As foodies who value high quality ingredients over everything else, we were thrilled to find somewhere that uses organic ingredients and even mills their own flour! A month ago we started milling our own flour at home and realized how hard it is, and how short the shelf life is, which made us appreciate Eller even more! Recently we came in for breakfast (which runs us $100+ for a family of 4) and asked Mickey (the guy in charge up front) if ALL of their pastries use fresh milled flour to which he responded "Yes everything uses fresh milled flour. This is the healthiest place you'll eat." Something was weird the way he said it though...he sounded almost defensive. Then we were eating outside and we saw a bunch of 25lb bags of flour stacked inside through the window. Obviously those were not fresh milled (and they didnt even say organic). Something smelled off. The next week we came in again, this time we were determined to get answers. We asked the cashier when they run the giant flour mill that's displayed next to the register. He said usually at night, but it wasn't working right now. Then we asked if they use 100% fresh milled flour in their pastries, to which he replied "Yes, everything up here uses freshly milled flour." Hmmmm. Then we asked if the mill isn't working, how are they getting all the fresh milled flour? He started stuttering, thinking what to say, then said they get the flour from someone else who's milling it for them. Oh ok... Then we asked about the giant stack of 25lb bags of flour sitting behind him, and he starting stuttering even more, then finally said "Well...not everything uses fresh milled flour. There are some changes going on right now. Only the items that say 'Heritage' use fresh flour" (which was 3 of the 12 or so items on display). We asked if these were short term changes and if they would go back to fresh milled flour to which he replied "No, these changes are permanent. That's all I can say right now. Sorry." So....TWO different employees lied to us about the ingredients they're using. Obviously the 2nd person had been coached on what to say. Now we are wondering how long this has been going on, and if they were ever using 100% fresh milled flour?!? I don't know what's going on at this place but, when it comes to food, honesty and transparency are MANDATORY. Had they been upfront about this I wouldn't have come to write this review. But if you're going to lie to customers faces, especially ones who have promoted you over the years, well, here's your review. Fingers crossed they wake up and start being honest with the people supporting them.

We had breakfast - an omelette, some bacon and lamb sausage, potatoes, and a cappuccino. we also had some pastries. All excellently prepared. We're going to try something else besides the omelette next time...it was OK but not "out of the park" so we'll try something else next week. Service - after we ordered at the counter our food was delivered to the table which are all located outside on a well-shaded patio. We always split our dishes - my wife and I can't eat an entire plate of food. It's not "table service" - they don't come back and check you or help with water or drinks, etc. Whatever you want you must return to the counter. But service at the counter is very friendly and helpful. The ambiance is an outdoor cafe....noisy neighbors, wind when it blows, dogs, all the regular stuff - good seating and umbrellas with some areas naturally shaded...lots of tables relative to the size of the shop. Very friendly staff. Why do my reviews get over 1,000 views every time we visit a new place? We don't know but it seems consistent. We feature very critical reviews - we rate high but include serious critiques. Maybe that's it.
