I have been there 2 times. The food is very good. Ambiance is a typical Chinese restaurant, nothing fancy just good food. We ordered the spring rolls which were piping hot and flavourful. Our order food the main courses were; breaded lemon chicken which was white meat, the lemon sauce came separately so you can choose a little sauce or really load it on. The wonton soup for one was free. We had the ginger beef which was cooked properly and not tough or grizzily. House special rice noodle was plenty but shrimp, squid chicken Ann pork was lacking. I've been coming here for 20 years (when it was the Austin Heights Diner). Extremely good customer service and wonderful food. My favourite restaurant. I really like the large portions and the flavours. The owner, Heidi, is very hard working and she is a great host. I like that there's a diverse mix of Chinese, Canadian and westernized Chinese food. Lots of vegetarian options too. My favourites are the Bean Sprout Chow mein, the mushroom fried rice, the French fries, and the garlic broccoli. They also serve alcoholic drinks and good tea and coffee. The breakfast menu is really good too. They also offer a kids menu and a lunch menu. Nothing else seemed to be open so we tried again The Sweet and Sour Pork was absolutely disgusting! So much sauce we couldn't taste anything else. Texture was pretty bad too. We asked for no peppers and still got a few! Chicken balls-who taught them how to do this shot have their credit score lowered! These were flavourless and doughy. Beef chop suet was great!! Usual typical chinese restaurant, interior is more updated than the exterior. They have a private room for special occasions. The food is so so your typical chow mein , sweet & sour pork, beef with broccoli but the only thing that stands out is the roasted pig which wasn't in the menu. If you're familiar with Chinese food, and want decent quality chinese food, this place ain't it. The majority of the patrons are non Asian for a reason. Restaurant was spacious, and there was plenty of seating at 10:45 am on a Friday. I went here for their lunch menu, and ordered their sweet and sour pork and also ginger beef. Portions were good. Came with a small bowl of fried rice and soup. One bite though, and I had buyers regret. Food wasn't hot, only warm. Pork wasn't crispy. Sauce wasn't sweet or sour enough. Same with their sweet and sour soup. Ginger beef was breaded a little to thick. Basically the idea was there. You know it's supposed be a sweet and sour pork dish, but the execution wasn't good. I'd say the quality would be of T&T take out tier, or maybe even less... because I never seemed to get buyer's remorse for an $8.50 meal at T&T. The only thing that I'd say was good was their fried rice that came with the lunch meal. Just eggs, rice, and soy sauce, but it was done right. Not too salty, fragrant, each bite leaves you wanting to eat the next bite. Does this place deserve a 1 star? No. Did I get food poisoning? No. Did I break down and cry like some of the other yelpers here (you know who I'm talking about), no, I did not break down and cry. The service was normal. The redeeming quality would be the portion size for $8.50. Sure beats eating ramen at home. I only came here because I saw the other reviews talked about dim sum, but I don't think I'll ever come here again. Tough Yelpers here, it's as authentic as it gets in that they're Chinese chefs. While they do cater to the Westerners, they're making the popular tasty dishes: just here to get filled up, right? Lol Ordered the Ma Po tofu. Even had more preserved veggies than I expected. Good value for $12 or so. Smooth pieces (guess tofu can't be hard) and lots sauce. Kudos for using environment-friendly takeout. It's a new location from North Road due to Skytrain, where they were there for 10+ years or so. This one is spiffier, 3 tv's and booth seating. I have eaten here on a number of occasions but mainly ate the location on Austin before when it was Austin Heights Diner which was well known for its value breakfast. We have come back for the breakfast and then Chinese (cantonese) food a couple of times. They have now moved to Lougheed Hwy. Not sure if they still serve Breakfast. This is your kind of standard medium to low quality Cantonese place that is reminiscent of your 70's and 80's North Americanized Chinese food establishment. Its geared towards the non Asian or non Cantonese clientele. I have ordered all kinds of dishes like Sweet and sour fish, Satay Chicken, Singapore noodle, and Beef in Black bean sauce fired rice noodle. Its hit and miss. First time food was flavourless. Second and third has been better. They use lots of veggie fillers (especially onions). So if you want your standard deep fried with tonnes of batter Cantonese "sweet and sour pork" type fare. Go for it But the real down side is the price. You are getting low-medium quality for expensive prices. I don't like paying $15-16 dollars for lots of onions and batter. But it seems like so many of these places are heading down that route more and more. read more

I've been here twice - once enjoying their breakfast hash dish, and once again recently enjoying a $8.95 sweet and sour pork with rice dish that comes with a individual sized wonton soup. The food has always been delicious, and the ginger beef, always done to perfection, and has become our favorite. I was a regular customer until today. Very disappointed they got my order wrong. It should have come with Beef chop suey and instead I got some dried up rice that was 3/4 of the meal. Breakfast is average. Nothing bad or poor nor was it unique or great. Sausages were good quality. Pricing for the standard breakfast of toast, 2 small eggs, 3 sausages and shredded potato hash browns was just under 7 bucks. Interior looks newer with new tables, chairs and 3 large flat screen TV's but nothing special. It's one of those slightly updated western Chinese restaurants. Service was polite. In my opinion one of the best Westernized chinese places in the GVRD. Meat dishes are excellent. Unlike other chinese restaurants when you order sweet and sour pork, you actually get pork, not breaded fat. Vegetable dishes are fresh and crispy. Noodles and rice are cooked just right. Prices are a few dollars higher than other places, but the portion sizes are also larger, so it balances out. The Restaurant itself is spacious with plenty of seating good for large groups or families. Decor is pretty standard. They also have a Bar and a private room for private parties. The one problem with Sunstar is communication. Most of the employees speak poor english. They have one lady working the phones who is unable to understand english at all. If that particular person answers the phone, I have to repeat my order 2 to 4 times before she understands, and mistakes are often made anyway. This is infuriating. There have been times I have gone someplace else because I did not need the aggravation. I want to give Sunstar 5 stars, but I have to knock it down to 3 stars because of the communication issue. No one should be taking phone orders unless they can speak and understand english fluently. read more

This place used to be Austin Heights Diner - a favourite cheap eats place of mine that I had been going to and ordering delivery from for years. Recently they closed down, renovated and reopened as the New Sun Star restaurant. Contrary to what reviewer "B. H." stated in their review this place is not better, in fact it has gone horribly downhill since reopening as Sun Star. While the menu has mostly stayed the same they changed many of the recipes - the once delicious and perfectly deep fried pot-stickers are now soggy lumps of dough, which was a huge disappointment because they were my favourite thing on the menu. Many of the menu items have shrinked in size but expanded in price. Everything just kind of seems to be slapped together without any care at all. Even with all those changes I still ordered from them on a weekly basis, but after the last delivery order I have officially blacklisted this place and they will never see another cent from me. The woman who answers the phone is completely incompetent. In the 10 times I have ordered from this place since it reopened they have screwed up my order... 10 times. Yep, every single time they mess it up. Even if I have the woman on the phone read the order back to me to make sure they have it right, they still fuck it up. The last time I ordered from them they not only sent me the wrong burger (again!), the burger was put together in such a way that I could tell they realized they had made the wrong thing but didn't care. I had ordered a Hawaiian burger and they send a Mexican burger with pineapple thrown on top of it, probably hoping that I wouldn't notice they made the wrong thing. I will not ever eat here again and I would not suggest it to anyone I know. read more

Went there for lunch. Almost drove by it because it didn't appear on any searches online for Chinese food close by. When I walked in I was addressed and waited on right away with a cheerful attitude. Very nice. The atmosphere is a big and open and most of the patrons were Caucasian seniors ordering western food such as burgers and fries. They have a Chinese lunch specials menu as well, featuring about 20 Asian dishes for $8.95. The regular menu was very extensive with over 157 Asian dishes and 23 Western dishes. Wow, what a lot of different foods to make. I ordered the Curry beef and potato with rice lunch special. I was was immediately served the Hot and Sour Soup that comes with the special and it was really good. The curry beef arrived soon after and it is authentic and medium spicy with onions and peppers. The taste was better than good and the beef was moist, soft and not chewy, fatty or sinewy. The vegetables were firm and fresh. I am impressed, and give it a 9 out of 10 for the food and service. The Country Music playing overhead did seem a tad out of place however, with the large screen TV's playing on as well, which distracted from the overall atmosphere. The furnishings were old but clean and there was some clutter in the back corner, but only noticeable if you look for it. Overall it was comfortable. The price was good at just over $10, including the green tea. I will be back to try other Asian dishes. read more

When this place was the Austin Heights diner I used to order from here a few times a month and I enjoyed it. Oh how I long for the days of yore... This has been the 5th time that I have ordered from the New Sun Star with my wife and this has been the 5th consecutive time that they have messed up our order. We literally did not get anything we ordered made correctly. We ordered a hawaiian burger with no ham and a teriyaki chicken cheese burger. What do we get? A mexican burger that had pineapple added to it and a cheese burger with bacon. I immediately called the restaurant back after our food had arrived and the kitchen was closed. We were offered credit in the form of 1 free burger next time we ordered. Normally I would be fine with something like this as it's friday night and mistakes can happen. But it is the FIFTH FREAKING TIME IN A ROW! Now, not only that but when I placed the order I asked the woman taking it to repeat it back to me. She had missed one of the items so I reminded her and asked her to repeat back the order once more to make sure she had it right (normally I'm really not that kind of guy, but from our past experiences ordering here I just wanted to be sure our order was right this time). I'm really not sure what more I could have done...They probably have better service in hell. Past mistakes have included giving us gravy instead of soup (or maybe they just thought it was the most delicious, greasy soup ever... I'm not here to judge), on a separate occasion we were given a mexican burger instead of a hawaiian burger, and another time they forgot our drinks. You get lots of food always take home a doggy bag and it's delicious so many choices the special war wonton ( see pic)is awesome I love The chicken and mushroom chowmain. Came by for a late dinner on the Monday of May long weekend. Ordered chicken chow mein, chicken with vegetables and another chicken dish with some side orders of some rolls. Food was hot, fresh and not to greasy just the way me and my hubby like it. The servings were big and we ate it up pretty fast. Service was really good and fast- always checked up on us and how food was tasting and for refills for water. Price is moderate to on the lower cost. Three dishes and some appies cost us about 45$ with left overs for a few days aswell. Thank you for the great food and great service! read more

Dropped by on a very busy early Saturday afternoon. Menu shows that they offer continental breakfast, too. We ordered their Lunch Specials at $8.95 that includes rice. Portions: pretty good for the price. Can be shared. We ended up packing some after in take-out boxes. Service is good though I don't like that they just dump the utensils right on the table without a napkin wrapping them or placed under them. And really, holding the tea cups with fingers inside them? Sorry, you lose a star for these. 1) House Special Chicken is tasty but way, way too much onions and bell peppers with only several pcs of chicken. More like House Special Bell Peppers. LOL. 2) We liked their Ginger Beef a lot! Nice texture. Not chewy. Lots. 3) Kai Fish is good. More like in sweet and sour flavour. 4) Seafood Chow Mein is just okay with veggies and shrimps. Broccolis seem to have an aftertaste, though. I've had better chow meins. 5) Kai Coconut Chicken is fine though wasn't popular in our group. Good that the coconut sauce isn't watery. Presentations on Ginger Beef and Kai Fish were so plain that they could use the excessive onions and bell peppers from the House Special Chicken. LOL. Extremely poor service. This is the 3rd time I ordered take out and got home only to find my order incorrect. I brought it back and they offered to compensate me with some spring rolls but only after they brought back the same incorrect dish. At this point I was insulted by their idiocy. Then they took away some of the spring rolls saying " we give you too much ". Are you serious?! Been an avid customer until now. If they go out of business, it will be because of how unprofessional and ignorant they can be. The food is less than average if you take out because they give you old stuff. We have ordered from this place twice. The first time delivery was pretty quick and most of the food was good. We ordered sesame chicken, bbq pork chow mein and ginger beef and everything was good, but the ginger beef was not as good as we hoped. Last night we ordered again through the Just Eat app and I didn't realize I had to add a tip when ordering as I thought they would run my credit card at the door or have a line to add a tip. The driver was 20 mins late and when I asked if he needed to run the card he said no and asked for a tip. I only had a loonie on me and apologized, but who does that and he was quite rude about it. After he left we started to open up the food. We again ordered the sesame chicken and bbq pork chow mein, which were good. We decided to try the Szechuan beef and it was all big hunks of vegetable with only a couple small pieces of beef. It was very disappointing. This restaurant is located on a well established neighbourhood, and it's evident that it's part of the community. I came in around dinner time. Very friendly, attentive service. I'm guessing that it's a family run place. Gramma was sitting at the back keeping and eye on things. ;) The staff did a Happy birthday thing for a party with pre recorded music. I ordered mahbo dofu on rice. Very good in quantity and taste, except the rice was hard. The mahbo tofu itself was perfect. Nice heat coming from the chili.
