Spicy Girl Roll (Spicy) and Salmon Avocado Roll
Meriya S.

I stopped by to grab some sushi to-go and had a pretty good experience. I ordered the Spicy Girl Roll and a Salmon Avocado Hand Roll. The Spicy Girl Roll had a nice kick to it, but for me it wasn't too spicy since I enjoy really spicy food. If you're more sensitive to spice, it might feel a bit spicy for you. Both rolls tasted good, and the price was very reasonable. For around $20, I was already full, so I think it's definitely worth the price. The restaurant itself is small and doesn't have a lot of seating, but the staff worked quickly. The atmosphere was nice and not too loud. When I went in the evening, the place was pretty full, but luckily people were still able to find seats and no one had to wait when I was there. Overall, it's a solid sushi spot if you're looking for something tasty without spending too much. It's not mind-blowingly amazing, but it's definitely good and worth what you pay. I would come back again next time.

49Er Roll + White Dragon Roll

I went to this cute little joint sometime last year with my friends when we were visiting our Alma Mater (SJSU) and got hungry. Saw this spot on Yelp and decided to pay a visit. Inside is very cute and small, I love the art on the walls with the LED lights. Very cute. The service is fine, very no frills from the moment you sit down. You get your order taken and it's very straightforward. For our group of four, we ordered: Miso Soup - 8/10 - Typical sushi restaurant miso soup, hit the spot on a cold night. 49er Roll - 9/10 - My favorite roll at any sushi place, so fresh, not heavy, and very citrusy. This was everyone's favorite of the night. White Dragon Roll - 7/10 - Not bad, just a little on the heavier side with the shrimp tempura and sauces. It's good though! Salmon Lover Roll - 8/10 - Not what I typically go for, but my friend ordered it and I was pleasantly surprised! Usually for Salmon, I love ordering nigiri or sashimi, but this was pretty good! What I really like about this spot is how affordable it is, too. I think it's smart considering that it's right across from SJSU (perfect for college students who want to stretch a dollar). I remember our group of four split like $13 each at the end of the meal, which was pretty solid. Overall, I think I would come back if I'm ever back in the area and craving sushi!

Sushi Roll Combo 2, Spicy Girl Roll (Spicy), White Dragon Roll, Hawaiian Roll
Maggie L.

My friend and I came here after going to the SJ Friend Fest and wanted something close by and saw Sumi Sushi. It was my first time here so I wasn't sure what to expect but I like it a lot. I think the pricing for a roll were pretty good, especially for the portion sizes. The rolls were pretty big, we ended up with basically 2 rolls to take home. My favorite was the Hawaiian Roll, I never had a sushi roll with pineapple before, but it was an interesting and delicious combination. The sweetness from the pineapple paired really well with the salmon. We also got a free roll (the White Dragon Roll) Which you can only get if you spend over $60. You order with a QR code and the at the end you can use it to call the server to pay too. The space is a bit small so I noticed a lot of people were doing takeout instead of dining in. But it looked like there were quick with that as well so not bad! I'm not a big fan of parking in Downtown but I would definitely come again if I'm in the area.

We came here for a vegan sushi & my kid loved it. We will definitely come again. Close to SJSU and open till 9pm

Nice little hole on a wall by college campus. Very hard working waiter. Probably very hard working chef too. Great food. Good ambience.

Its a super cute and cozy sushi restaurant, when you come in you get seated (if there is no wait). You scan the QR Code and you get ti ordering. They are fast and efficient with their service and the staff is AMAZING! The food is delicious too. The veggies in the chicken curry had texture and the flavor was delicious. Our favorite rolls were ALL of them, specially the scallop nigiri it literally melted in your mouth, and the spicy girl was definitely spicy but delicious. We asked to modify it and not add eel sauce due to a gluten allegy and it was still very delicious. Would give them 100/10 stars

It's ok!! We got a few rolls, the sauces make it. You should definitely try the secret sauce, we won't tell you what it is hahaha. Rice is a bit sticky though. Service is friendly and good.

One of the newest businesses/restaurants on the Paseo de San Antonio near San Jose State University. Nice atmosphere with tables for 2-4 people. First visit as I was in the mood for ramen so I decided to check it out during my lunch hour (short walk from City Hall where I work). I ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen with Pork Belly and it was delicious. They also have various choices of ramen on the menu. I also ordered a 6-piece Spicy Tuna roll, which was also very tasty. You can order at your table via QR code or with the waitstaff. I ordered via QR code and my food was served fast. Friendly waitstaff as well. If you're hankering for a traditional roll like Dragon, Spider, Unagi, etc. they have that too as well as some specialty rolls. Glad that Sumi Sushi opened here as the closest Japanese restaurant is in Japantown which is a 20-minute walk from City Hall. If you're looking for Japanese comfort food and are near the SJSU campus, I highly recommend checking out Sumi Sushi! I'll be coming back to try some of the other ramen bowls!

Amazing. Sushi is so fresh and affordable. Most places around here are charging an arm and a leg for all their roles. I loveeeee that they have sushi combinations! I hope they NEVERRRRR CHANGE, unless it's to add more sushi options to the menu.

Stephanie H.

The fish was so fresh! Wow, we were impressed. We ordered the Philadelphia roll, ramen, and salmon roll! For the food: - The Philadelphia roll was solid! It was a standard roll that compliments the cream cheese. - The ramen was a bit bland and needed a bit more seasoning. We added soy sauce to the broth which helped! It balanced out the flavor quite nicely. - The salmon lover roll was delicious and so soft! The food was overall affordable and delicious.

Snowy Mountain Roll (great value!)
Kate L.

The sushi was great for the cost, and I would potentially try take-out again for the affordability. However, the service was the main issue. We waited over an hour for two rolls, and I triple checked that our order went through. If there had been some communication, we would have totally understood.

Amazing sushi rolls with amazing value! Service is quick and efficient. The restaurant combined the modern American sushi experience with a bright, artful space. Highly recommend checking Sumi Sushi out!

Sumi Sushi has quickly established itself as a favorite for quality Japanese cuisine at 119 Paseo de San Antonio in Downtown San Jose. It has a casual Japanese pop-culture vibe with anime on the walls and fun lighting. Food wise they specialize in classic rolls, creative specialties, and generous Chirashi bowls. Service is super fast and efficient. You can order togo from a kiosk or use a QR code to quickly pick food the moment you sit down. Prices are reasonable, which should appeal to San Jose State University students and really anyone casually walking by. I got to try the Ladybug Roll (soft shell crab tempura, crab meat, torched salmon), White Dragon Roll (shrimp tempura, crab meat, cucumber), a nigiri sampling, and a green tea cheesecake. I'd recommend them all, but would likely go heavy on the nigiri next time since it was so good. The salmon and Hamachi especially were excellent. Don't let it's humble entrance and location fool you. Downtown San Jose now has six different sushi spots, and this might just be the new benchmark.

Rolls galore!

It did feel a bit cramped but fortunately I was just in and out. Service was great too! We got the Lion King and a sashimi platter. The lion king was SOOO good. I always get worried ordering this at new sushi spots because I feel like it can be a hit or miss (especially when they load waaay too much spicy mayo on it lol) - this roll had the perfect amount where it wasn't too overpowering. The ingredients tasted fresh too! As for the sashimi platter - every piece was thick and fresh. I'd definitely come back for takeout! Make sure you call ahead of time.

The service was good--the servers were very friendly and attentive, and our food came out pretty quickly after we ordered as well. We ordered two of the sashimi sampler alongside the hamachi lover roll. I liked the roll! The ratio of fish, rice, and avocado were great. The sashimi sampler, however, was a little disappointing. The presentation was a little awkward--long, thin cuts of fish folded up into little bowls and scattered with greens. 4 of the 6 pieces were seared, which I have never expected when ordering sashimi. The pricing was a little on the higher end of normal, and, while the food was decent, it doesn't outdo any of the other local sushi spots that I have visited in the area. The roll was ~$17 and the sashimi sampler nearly $18. Overall, I think Goku Sushi is a decent spot. If I'm nearby and craving sushi, it is definitely in the running, even if it isn't my first choice.
