Hamachi Mango Hand Roll with Soy Paper

Ever since I first heard about Ozumo's SF location years and years ago, I had been equal parts skeptical and hopeful about them. The former because it seemed like they might be a bit pricey for what they are; the latter because most of my friends that have tried them have spoken relatively highly about what they've had. As such, while they've been on my list of bookmarks for a quite a while, I never felt very compelled to try them either. And yet, somehow, we've managed to make our way to the one here in San Jose multiple times now! Sitting right in the heart of Santana Row, this particular Ozumo makes for a great spot to grab lunch during a day of shopping, happy hour after a long day at work, or a Friday or Saturday date night. Unlike your neighborhood Japanese restaurant and their array of bento box combos, the menu here is more like an izakaya's, with a much more varied array of options to offer - small bites, ramen/udon, entrees, nigiri, sashimi, and a mix of classic and house sushi rolls. In addition, they also have an interesting cocktail menu, featuring a lot of staple drinks that are infused with Asian flavors/ingredients. -- HAZAKURA - Umami Gin, Sake, Luxardo, Sakura Vermouth, Orgeat Cherry Blossom Elixir, Lemon, and Greek Yogurt Not only did this sound really unique (first time seeing a cocktail with Greek yogurt in it), but it was pretty tasty, too! I liked how the overall profile was light, semi-floral, and super easy to drink. Pretty solid! -- TOKYO VICE - Arette Blanco Tequila, Grapefruit, Ume, Fresno, Lime, and Togarashi This felt pretty true to a spicy paloma, as the Asian elements were subtle, and tasted pretty good. It was hard to separate the ume from the grapefruit, but I liked their combined tartness and the spice from the Fresno chilies and togarashi. -- HANABI - Sliced Hamachi & Avocado, Shredded Daikon, Leeks, and Warm Ginger-Chili Ponzu All in all, this was pretty solid. The hamachi was flavorful and I liked how every piece had ikura on it. The avocado was a little firm, but it still complemented the fish well, as did the ginger-chili ponzu sauce. -- KYUSHU KARAAGE - Japanese Style Fried Chicken with Red Yuzu Kosho Aioli While I certainly wish the portion had been larger, the taste of this was great. Each piece was surprisingly big, the batter was crispy, and the chicken itself was quite juicy. -- BROCCOLINI - Grilled Broccolini with Sweet Onion Sauce and Sesame Seeds Ehh...I wasn't a fan of this one. This was described as grilled, but it didn't taste that way. Rather, it felt like it was sauteed and overcooked at that. By no means terrible, but I wouldn't get this again. -- KINOKO - Roasted Enoki, Hon Shimeji, and Oyster Mushrooms with Garlic Tamari and Chives Aside from how the enoki mushrooms felt a little overcooked and stringy, this dish was pretty good! Loved how the mushrooms has a slightly earthy taste and how the garlic tamari added a nice umami. -- AGEDASHI TOFU - Crispy Silken Tofu with Kabocha Squash and Shiitake Dashi This was great! The tofu was silky and I liked how the batter didn't fall apart nor get gummy. The kabocha was good too, but the highlight for me was the shiitake dashi, which I wish every agedashi tofu dish had. -- SAKE YUAN YAKI - Grilled Salmon with Citrus Soy Glaze & Yuzu Togarashi Maybe it's just because I had a bad one just a few nights before, but I liked this one! The edges had a nice char, the salmon was super moist, and I liked how the glaze had a touch of sweetness and acidity. -- HAMACHI MANGO HAND ROLL with Soy Paper It was a little surprising to see this was left unwrapped, but this was no less delicious! The slices of mango weren't super juicy, but they were fresh, the rice was well cooked, and the hamachi was terrific! Across each of the visits we've made here, the service has been pretty good. Every server we've had has been welcoming and attentive (yet not overbearing). What's more, orders typically seem to come out relatively fast regardless of how busy the place is. As much as I enjoyed the vast majority of what we've tried, though, I do wish that the portion sizes had been larger, particularly the Hanabi, Karaage, and Agedashi Tofu. That being said, it was hardly shocking to see given how Ozumo is nicer than your average Japanese restaurant (and it's Santana Row of all places). In any case, it wouldn't stop me from coming back, despite how there are so many other restaurants nearby that I still want to check out. Or, at the very least, finally visit their original spot in SF to try their sushi offerings! All in all, THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.

If you are contemplating coming here, just come. Such a wonderful experience with exceptional service. Starting with the drinks: -lychee martini so fresh and tasty -and their signature lychee drink, tastes like bubble gum and is so amazing Veggie rolls are amazing! The care that they put into making them is so obvious. My partner loved his rolls (non-veg) Matcha tiramisu was very unique, but good. Vibes are fun inside too, very lively. So many vegetarian options and a little patio!

I've been here several times. The food here is always good. Their blistered shishito peppers are a nice appetizer. The beef tartare is good, but I probably wouldn't order again as it's pretty lackluster compared to the rest of the menu. Sushi is the way to go. Enjoyed the California roll made with real crab. Negi toro roll was also yummy. Belly trio is good. I love uni and theirs was good. All of the fish tasted fresh and yummy. Service is usually good but the last time I went I waited for a long time to be helped and get the bill. Granted it was near closing time, so I give some grace. Place is usually busy and has nice decor. Overall it's a great restaurant one of my go-tos on Santana row.

I've only been here for HH but that's also the reason I keep coming back! The vibes are good, and I really enjoy grabbing some cocktails and HH foods when the weather is nice and the window walls are wide open. There are a variety of HH drink and food options available, though they don't make it easy to view. Instead of a separate HH menu, they note it on the main menus up in the right-hand corner of each page. Happy house is every day from 4-6 pm. So far I've enjoyed the foods I've tried (skewers, karaage, ca roll). I especially enjoy their pandan espresso martini, and always appreciate when places make them unique. A must try! Lastly, the bartenders have always been great and are more than willing to let you try a drink and/or make you a new one if you don't love the one you ordered.

Dragon Crunch with swapped out salmon instead of prawns and no snow crab

We came on a Sunday late afternoon around 3ish for a super late lunch. It wasn't crowded at all and the restaurant definitely has a nice ambiance. Our food came quick and our server was super nice and attentive. I told him I had a shrimp allergy so he offered to swap out the prawn to salmon. We liked all the food we ordered. My mom got the Honcho, I got the Dragon Crunch and my son got salmon and ikura nigiri. We also got some tempura appetizers and some broccolini. Our food tasted fresh and we really liked it.

My friend got me a gift card for my birthday in 2025 and I finally got around to using it for my birthday in 2026. I avoid Santana Row because of the parking situation so came on a Monday evening, hoping traffic wouldn't be as bad during this time. Luckily was able to find parking pretty easily. I made a reservation on opentable but the restaurant was pretty open given that it was a monday so maybe it wasn't necessary. We decided to split the Negima skewers as an appetizer. I had the chirashi as my entree and my partner had the ozumo roll. Service was very prompt and friendly. The aesthethics of the restaurant was very romantic. Definitely a great place to have a date night. My partner shies away from raw fish and actually really enjoyed my chirashi. His ozumo roll was tasty and so were the negima skewers. Very lovely dinner spot!

Came here on a Friday evening for a date night. Got a reservation the day before with no trouble. Started with the hitokuchi and the edamame. The hitokuchi was the best thing I had the night. The salmon was melt-in-your-mouth fresh and the rice was perfectly crispy. The crispy rice will get stuck in your teeth. The edamame was a letdown by comparison. Way too salty for my taste. Moved on to the aburi and spider rolls. The aburi was fine, but the flavor was mostly coming from the sauce. The spider roll was the one to get. The crab was tasty and the sauce pulled it all together really well. I'm not usually a cocktail person, but the martini here changed my mind. Really well made. The space feels upscale. Dim lighting, intimate setting. Service was attentive without hovering, which is exactly what you want on a date. That said, I think this place might actually shine more with a group. Lots to share and explore on the menu.

The staff was incredible- polite, knowledgeable, and efficient. I ordered the hamachi collar and it was delicious. Great menu selection which included drink specials and sushi rolls. My only complaint was it was very loud and hard to hear conversations from your group.

    Broccolini, Hamachi

Came here for lunch on a Friday - I really liked the dishes I liked, and very much did not like the ones I didn't. There was not a lot of middle ground here. Let's start with the positives, because there were definitely some highlights. The Dragon Crunch roll was a favorite - great texture, full-bodied flavor, and just overall well executed. The hamachi appetizer was also excellent. Fresh, clean flavors, and exactly what I want when I order hamachi, and there was a lot too it that made it really interesting The broccolini surprised me in a good way too - simple, but flavorful and cooked well. Atmosphere-wise, it was a really nice spot for a weekday lunch. Very uncrowded and chill. We even got to watch the Winter Olympics on TV while we ate. Service was kind and attentive. Now for the negatives. I would not recommend the tartare. I couldn't finish it because I just didn't like the flavor at all. It came with a fried rice paper to scoop it with, but it didn't add any flavor and just made the meat taste even more oily. So overall, some dishes I would absolutely reorder, and others I would skip entirely.

Sat at the bar. Place is beautiful. If possible ask for Diego. He is the best! Let me pick what I wanted to watch on the tv. Let me use his personal phone charger. Sushi was amazing. Had conversation the whole time. What a guy! Absolutely world class service. I am coming back just for him

The "happy hour" gyozas for $12. Whereas normally it's $16 for 5. $4 per gyoza $3.20... super deceptive
    Rachel A.

This review is because they're deceptive with their pricing. We went for happy hour and their gyozas were $12 but actually 2 less gyozas than normal (3 instead of 5) so the price per gyoza is actually higher than regular price $16 for 5 gyozas. That's super shady. Added menu as proof. Our server (who was lovely) came to apologize cause he was also surprised happy hour only gave 3 gyozas cause he'd told us it came with 5. Food has also gone down in quality over the years which has been disappointing.

    Sandy Y.

Overall: B-/C+ Had a few rolls (rainbow, spider, and a specialty roll), tofu, karaage chicken, and tempura udon. Food quality was mid and the rolls were on the smaller side. Great ambiance for happy hour, so could see myself going back there with colleagues for a drink.

    King salmon nigiri
    Katie L.

For a sushi place, surprisingly I enjoyed their yakitori grilled skewers more than the nigiri. The pork belly was my favorite which also surprised me because I tend to like beef or leaner cut skewers typically. The pork belly yakitori is a must try, immediately melts in your mouth, chicken would be my second fave then salmon and sadly the Wagyu last as it was too overcooked and tough for my liking. We also got the dragon roll which was good with lots of crispy tempura bits. Hamachi tataki, like a carpaccio dish which included some seaweed and cucumber salad had a nice sauce and was refreshing. The king salmon nigiri was disappointing as it came with the salmon skin which was strange texture to eat and did not enjoy that one at all. The otoro was fatty but also had a different texture that I am used to. The restaurant itself is very chill, not crowded and very mood vibe lighting. The server was also attentive and checked up on us often.

Anywho, we ordered a variety of items to try: new stamina don, clam chowder croquette, kani chirashi bento, and a salmon kama bento. Regarding the food: New stamina don came with slice beef, sliced beef tongue, braised pork, poached egg, and kimchi over rice. The sliced beef was cooked to rare, and the braised pork was very tender. The rice also came with the poached egg, kewpie mayo and a lemon, mixing it all together with the rice made it have a nice creamy flavor. Clam chowder croquette was something I have never heard of before, so I definitely wanted to try it. This was delicious, would definitely get it again. A fried crispy croquette with clam chowder in it but also some mashed potatoes and tonkotsu sauce on top. Kani chirashi bento had snow crab, fish roe over rice, rolled egg omelette, sashimi, fried boneless chicken, and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The sashimi came with 4 pieces, 2 tuna and 2 salmon. the tuna was a little fishy but the soy sauce helped. The salmon was actually pretty good - good fattiness. The fried chicken was fine, a few pieces were dry. Overall this bento was good. Salmon Kama bento is salmon collar over rice, fried boneless chicken, takoyaki and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The salmon collar needed some salt in my opinion. For the food overall, it was a little bit under seasoned for me but for portion, price and quality are good.

I'll admit it might have just been the specific dishes we ordered, but the food overall missed the mark. On a positive note, the service was incredibly fast and the staff was very nice! However, the food left a lot to be desired. We got the wagyu beef plate, and the meat was unfortunately chewy and heavily over-salted. We also ordered the seared salmon ikura bowl, which wasn't anything special and really lacked flavor. The bowl was quite dry, and I kept wishing it came with some sort of sauce to tie everything together. Even the shishito peppers were surprisingly bland. While I appreciate the great service, the food just didn't live up to the hype for me.

They have some appetizers and drinks on the happy hour menu, so we tried the gyoza, mochi and side tempura. The mochi had a house made sauce glaze that was sweet and salty, and came with nori as a wrap. The texture of the mochi was really soft and chewy. The gyoza were really crispy with a soft interior. We ended up ordering a second round of them. The tempura was nicely fried with not too much batter. The shrimp was really succulent and I liked that they have mushroom tempura too. From their regular menu, we ordered a bunch of food. I tried the yaki-onigiri ochazuke with salmon, fried chicken skin, the eggplant and various skewers. The fried chicken skin was really nice and crispy, and came with a ponzu sauce and mayo to dip in. The yaki onigiri was nicely grilled and still had crispy bits when submerged in the soup. I was really excited that they have shishamo/smelt. It was nicely roasted and didn't have any overtly fishy flavor. Everyone at my table really enjoyed their food. I'd definitely come back here to try their other dishes!

As soon as you walk in, you're surrounded by the pleasant aroma of smoke and grilled meats cooking over the open grill. The interior is thoughtfully decorated, with street art covering the walls that makes the place feel like you've been transported somewhere far from where you actually are--especially considering it's located in a simple shopping center in Fremont. It actually reminded me of eating skewers in Asakusa, which is a nice feeling to get from a local spot. It's a fun place to grab some drinks, order a bunch of skewers, and just enjoy the atmosphere. Servers are kind and welcoming. It can get a bit pricey if you lose track of how many skewers you've ordered. They're tasty and easy to keep ordering, though, so it's a great place to splurge a little and treat yourself. Just not an everyday kind of place, at least not for me.
