Honcho and Aburi specialty rolls
Karina G.

Ozumo is fine-- the sushi tastes good, but it didn't stand out from my usual spots. Nothing that made me think "I need to come back." What did stand out was the bill -- $200 for one app, two rolls, two handrolls, two desserts, and a cocktail is a lot to swallow, especially when the sushi is just solid and not exceptional. For a Santana Row location at that price point, you'd expect the ambiance to match. Instead the interior felt crowded and didn't have the vibe you'd want for an upscale sushi experience. The chocolate-Chan and matcha tiramisu were genuinely amazing -- easily the highlight of the meal. With so many great sushi spots in the Bay, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here.

Salmon crispy rice
Lizey N.

Great food, great service, love the moody vibes inside. Server was very friendly and made us feel comfortable, shared recommendations. When they brought the rolls out it was all scattered on the table and the server came over to rearrange the table and make it look nice so I could take a pic. It was a thoughtful touch. Food was incredible and pretty consistent with the last time I came here over a year ago. Salmon crispy rice was flavorful, lightly zesty, and fresh. I did enjoy it but the rice was a little too crispy and hard for me. The rolls were all so delicious and it was hard to pick a favorite because each one was so fresh, delicious, and melted in my mouth. Each had its own flavors and textures which were so good! Love coming here for a nicer sushi date.

Hamachi Mango Hand Roll with Soy Paper

Ever since I first heard about Ozumo's SF location years and years ago, I had been equal parts skeptical and hopeful about them. The former because it seemed like they might be a bit pricey for what they are; the latter because most of my friends that have tried them have spoken relatively highly about what they've had. As such, while they've been on my list of bookmarks for a quite a while, I never felt very compelled to try them either. And yet, somehow, we've managed to make our way to the one here in San Jose multiple times now! Sitting right in the heart of Santana Row, this particular Ozumo makes for a great spot to grab lunch during a day of shopping, happy hour after a long day at work, or a Friday or Saturday date night. Unlike your neighborhood Japanese restaurant and their array of bento box combos, the menu here is more like an izakaya's, with a much more varied array of options to offer - small bites, ramen/udon, entrees, nigiri, sashimi, and a mix of classic and house sushi rolls. In addition, they also have an interesting cocktail menu, featuring a lot of staple drinks that are infused with Asian flavors/ingredients. -- HAZAKURA - Umami Gin, Sake, Luxardo, Sakura Vermouth, Orgeat Cherry Blossom Elixir, Lemon, and Greek Yogurt Not only did this sound really unique (first time seeing a cocktail with Greek yogurt in it), but it was pretty tasty, too! I liked how the overall profile was light, semi-floral, and super easy to drink. Pretty solid! -- TOKYO VICE - Arette Blanco Tequila, Grapefruit, Ume, Fresno, Lime, and Togarashi This felt pretty true to a spicy paloma, as the Asian elements were subtle, and tasted pretty good. It was hard to separate the ume from the grapefruit, but I liked their combined tartness and the spice from the Fresno chilies and togarashi. -- HANABI - Sliced Hamachi & Avocado, Shredded Daikon, Leeks, and Warm Ginger-Chili Ponzu All in all, this was pretty solid. The hamachi was flavorful and I liked how every piece had ikura on it. The avocado was a little firm, but it still complemented the fish well, as did the ginger-chili ponzu sauce. -- KYUSHU KARAAGE - Japanese Style Fried Chicken with Red Yuzu Kosho Aioli While I certainly wish the portion had been larger, the taste of this was great. Each piece was surprisingly big, the batter was crispy, and the chicken itself was quite juicy. -- BROCCOLINI - Grilled Broccolini with Sweet Onion Sauce and Sesame Seeds Ehh...I wasn't a fan of this one. This was described as grilled, but it didn't taste that way. Rather, it felt like it was sauteed and overcooked at that. By no means terrible, but I wouldn't get this again. -- KINOKO - Roasted Enoki, Hon Shimeji, and Oyster Mushrooms with Garlic Tamari and Chives Aside from how the enoki mushrooms felt a little overcooked and stringy, this dish was pretty good! Loved how the mushrooms has a slightly earthy taste and how the garlic tamari added a nice umami. -- AGEDASHI TOFU - Crispy Silken Tofu with Kabocha Squash and Shiitake Dashi This was great! The tofu was silky and I liked how the batter didn't fall apart nor get gummy. The kabocha was good too, but the highlight for me was the shiitake dashi, which I wish every agedashi tofu dish had. -- SAKE YUAN YAKI - Grilled Salmon with Citrus Soy Glaze & Yuzu Togarashi Maybe it's just because I had a bad one just a few nights before, but I liked this one! The edges had a nice char, the salmon was super moist, and I liked how the glaze had a touch of sweetness and acidity. -- HAMACHI MANGO HAND ROLL with Soy Paper It was a little surprising to see this was left unwrapped, but this was no less delicious! The slices of mango weren't super juicy, but they were fresh, the rice was well cooked, and the hamachi was terrific! Across each of the visits we've made here, the service has been pretty good. Every server we've had has been welcoming and attentive (yet not overbearing). What's more, orders typically seem to come out relatively fast regardless of how busy the place is. As much as I enjoyed the vast majority of what we've tried, though, I do wish that the portion sizes had been larger, particularly the Hanabi, Karaage, and Agedashi Tofu. That being said, it was hardly shocking to see given how Ozumo is nicer than your average Japanese restaurant (and it's Santana Row of all places). In any case, it wouldn't stop me from coming back, despite how there are so many other restaurants nearby that I still want to check out. Or, at the very least, finally visit their original spot in SF to try their sushi offerings! All in all, THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.

Matcha tiramisu

If you are contemplating coming here, just come. Such a wonderful experience with exceptional service. Starting with the drinks: -lychee martini so fresh and tasty -and their signature lychee drink, tastes like bubble gum and is so amazing Veggie rolls are amazing! The care that they put into making them is so obvious. My partner loved his rolls (non-veg) Matcha tiramisu was very unique, but good. Vibes are fun inside too, very lively. So many vegetarian options and a little patio!

the most expensive tiny mid sushi ever
Angel H.

This place was so disappointing to the point that it should be considered miscategorized. It's more of a lounge for provincial westerner palettes serving average cocktails for Santana Row's evening scene, which is fine; but it is NOT an izakaya and the Japanese food is completely fake, seafood is not fresh, sushi not properly executed, portions are tiny, exorbitantly overpriced. It's a hyped up imitation Asian fusion trend theme w lux entrée-priced dishes that are actually more like blah apps, like a costume culturally appropriated restaurant lol! such a scam, would NOT recommend.

I've been here several times. The food here is always good. Their blistered shishito peppers are a nice appetizer. The beef tartare is good, but I probably wouldn't order again as it's pretty lackluster compared to the rest of the menu. Sushi is the way to go. Enjoyed the California roll made with real crab. Negi toro roll was also yummy. Belly trio is good. I love uni and theirs was good. All of the fish tasted fresh and yummy. Service is usually good but the last time I went I waited for a long time to be helped and get the bill. Granted it was near closing time, so I give some grace. Place is usually busy and has nice decor. Overall it's a great restaurant one of my go-tos on Santana row.

I've only been here for HH but that's also the reason I keep coming back! The vibes are good, and I really enjoy grabbing some cocktails and HH foods when the weather is nice and the window walls are wide open. There are a variety of HH drink and food options available, though they don't make it easy to view. Instead of a separate HH menu, they note it on the main menus up in the right-hand corner of each page. Happy house is every day from 4-6 pm. So far I've enjoyed the foods I've tried (skewers, karaage, ca roll). I especially enjoy their pandan espresso martini, and always appreciate when places make them unique. A must try! Lastly, the bartenders have always been great and are more than willing to let you try a drink and/or make you a new one if you don't love the one you ordered.

Negima skewers

My friend got me a gift card for my birthday in 2025 and I finally got around to using it for my birthday in 2026. I avoid Santana Row because of the parking situation so came on a Monday evening, hoping traffic wouldn't be as bad during this time. Luckily was able to find parking pretty easily. I made a reservation on opentable but the restaurant was pretty open given that it was a monday so maybe it wasn't necessary. We decided to split the Negima skewers as an appetizer. I had the chirashi as my entree and my partner had the ozumo roll. Service was very prompt and friendly. The aesthethics of the restaurant was very romantic. Definitely a great place to have a date night. My partner shies away from raw fish and actually really enjoyed my chirashi. His ozumo roll was tasty and so were the negima skewers. Very lovely dinner spot!

Came here on a Friday evening for a date night. Got a reservation the day before with no trouble. Started with the hitokuchi and the edamame. The hitokuchi was the best thing I had the night. The salmon was melt-in-your-mouth fresh and the rice was perfectly crispy. The crispy rice will get stuck in your teeth. The edamame was a letdown by comparison. Way too salty for my taste. Moved on to the aburi and spider rolls. The aburi was fine, but the flavor was mostly coming from the sauce. The spider roll was the one to get. The crab was tasty and the sauce pulled it all together really well. I'm not usually a cocktail person, but the martini here changed my mind. Really well made. The space feels upscale. Dim lighting, intimate setting. Service was attentive without hovering, which is exactly what you want on a date. That said, I think this place might actually shine more with a group. Lots to share and explore on the menu.

Salmon and hamachi sashimi
Diana H.

Ozumo is one of my favorite sushi restaurants at Santana Row. The quality of the fish is consistently fresh, beautifully presented, and melts in your mouth. We ordered a variety of sushi, sashimi, specialty rolls, and gyoza, and every dish was flavorful and expertly prepared. The salmon sashimi was buttery and incredibly fresh, the specialty rolls were creative without overpowering the fish, and the gyoza were perfectly crispy with a delicious dipping sauce. Everything was plated beautifully, making the meal feel like a special experience. The atmosphere is stylish and upscale, making it a great spot for date nights, celebrations, or dinner with friends. The service was attentive, and the overall dining experience was excellent. Ozumo is definitely one of the best places in San Jose for high-quality Japanese cuisine, and I'll gladly be back.

We came here for our 11th wedding anniversary with our two kids because it looked like a nice place for a family dinner. Our first impression was good, and the food was okay. I did think it was a little overpriced for the quality, but it was our anniversary and we were there to enjoy the evening, so that really wasn't a big deal. Unfortunately, the service ended up ruining the experience for us. When our kids' food came out, they weren't given any forks or spoons. They're five years old and can't really eat a full meal with chopsticks yet. Their food was sitting right in front of them, but we had to wait about five minutes just for someone to walk by so we could ask for utensils. And just to be clear, we weren't sitting there quietly expecting someone to magically know we needed something. We were actively looking around for our server, trying to make eye contact with anyone nearby, and probably giving the most obvious "we really need some help over here" look possible. If the system here is that customers are expected to call out to a server across the restaurant or get up from the table and go find someone whenever they need something, then maybe I misunderstood how the service works. But at a full service restaurant, I normally expect someone to check on the table at least occasionally. Unfortunately, this wasn't just about the utensils. The same thing happened throughout the rest of our dinner. We needed more water, and our kids were still hungry and wanted to order more food, but no one came to check on us. Other servers were around, but they seemed focused only on their own tables and didn't really look around. At one point, the server who had taken our order was at the bar chatting while we had been waiting for quite a while trying to get someone's attention. After about 15 minutes, our kids were getting really hungry and we couldn't keep waiting. I finally asked another server, who was clearly busy taking care of their own tables, if there was any way we could order more food. They were actually very kind, stopped what they were doing, listened to me, and went to find our server. I really appreciated that, especially since our table wasn't even their responsibility. We were told our server would come over soon, but we still had to wait quite a bit longer. By the time our server finally came back, we honestly didn't even want to order anymore. We had already waited so long just to place an additional order, and we had no idea how much longer we would be waiting for the food after that. So we just got some more water and left. What was especially frustrating was that the restaurant didn't even seem that busy. Most of the time it just felt like no one was paying attention to our table at all. We weren't expecting anything special just because it was our anniversary. We simply wanted to have a nice dinner with our kids. Instead, we spent a good part of the meal looking around for someone to help us while our kids sat there hungry waiting to order more food. The only person who really seemed willing to help was the server who wasn't even assigned to us. It was supposed to be a happy anniversary dinner with our family, and we left feeling frustrated and disappointed. I really hope management pays more attention to this, because having to repeatedly search for a server just to get utensils, water, or order more food shouldn't be part of a dining experience, especially at this price point.

Dragon Crunch with swapped out salmon instead of prawns and no snow crab
Trisha L.

We came on a Sunday late afternoon around 3ish for a super late lunch. It wasn't crowded at all and the restaurant definitely has a nice ambiance. Our food came quick and our server was super nice and attentive. I told him I had a shrimp allergy so he offered to swap out the prawn to salmon. We liked all the food we ordered. My mom got the Honcho, I got the Dragon Crunch and my son got salmon and ikura nigiri. We also got some tempura appetizers and some broccolini. Our food tasted fresh and we really liked it.

Broccolini, Hamachi
Kristen B.

Came here for lunch on a Friday - I really liked the dishes I liked, and very much did not like the ones I didn't. There was not a lot of middle ground here. Let's start with the positives, because there were definitely some highlights. The Dragon Crunch roll was a favorite - great texture, full-bodied flavor, and just overall well executed. The hamachi appetizer was also excellent. Fresh, clean flavors, and exactly what I want when I order hamachi, and there was a lot too it that made it really interesting The broccolini surprised me in a good way too - simple, but flavorful and cooked well. Atmosphere-wise, it was a really nice spot for a weekday lunch. Very uncrowded and chill. We even got to watch the Winter Olympics on TV while we ate. Service was kind and attentive. Now for the negatives. I would not recommend the tartare. I couldn't finish it because I just didn't like the flavor at all. It came with a fried rice paper to scoop it with, but it didn't add any flavor and just made the meat taste even more oily. So overall, some dishes I would absolutely reorder, and others I would skip entirely.

Amebi is Aji Ebi Shrimp in the menu. If you want raw fresh and natural seafood sweet shrimps flavor. 2 pcs $15.

Anywho, we ordered a variety of items to try: new stamina don, clam chowder croquette, kani chirashi bento, and a salmon kama bento. Regarding the food: New stamina don came with slice beef, sliced beef tongue, braised pork, poached egg, and kimchi over rice. The sliced beef was cooked to rare, and the braised pork was very tender. The rice also came with the poached egg, kewpie mayo and a lemon, mixing it all together with the rice made it have a nice creamy flavor. Clam chowder croquette was something I have never heard of before, so I definitely wanted to try it. This was delicious, would definitely get it again. A fried crispy croquette with clam chowder in it but also some mashed potatoes and tonkotsu sauce on top. Kani chirashi bento had snow crab, fish roe over rice, rolled egg omelette, sashimi, fried boneless chicken, and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The sashimi came with 4 pieces, 2 tuna and 2 salmon. the tuna was a little fishy but the soy sauce helped. The salmon was actually pretty good - good fattiness. The fried chicken was fine, a few pieces were dry. Overall this bento was good. Salmon Kama bento is salmon collar over rice, fried boneless chicken, takoyaki and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The salmon collar needed some salt in my opinion. For the food overall, it was a little bit under seasoned for me but for portion, price and quality are good.

This was her first time…read morehaving Izakaya, so it was extra fun to experience it all through her excited, first-time eyes. Spoiler alert: She LOVED it! I made reservations for a Friday night at 6 pm. It was pretty empty when I arrived, but by the time we left, it was packed. We were seated in a booth at the back of the restaurant. It was very dark back there, but that didn't take away from our experience. My friend tried the house-made ginger ale, and she couldn't stop raving about it. She especially loved eating the whole slices of ginger at the bottom of her cup. I tried a sip and agreed it was refreshing. Since this was my friend's first time at a Japanese Izakaya, I ordered an assortment of dishes for us to share. Okay, I HAVE to tell you about the garlic edamame. It was one of the stars of the night. It wasn't just covered in chunks of garlic, like I've had at other restaurants. It was charred over the flame, so it had a salty, garlicky, and smoky flavor. DELICIOUS! We also got the Grilled Mochi. That was another hit. The chewy squares of mochi were covered in their special Enka sauce & served on crispy nori. Yum! We only ordered one item from their special menu that night. Their Garlic Fries were perfectly light, airy, and crispy. My friend said she had never had anything truffle-flavored before. I was surprised that my least favorite dish of the night was the salmon sashimi, as sake is my usual favorite. For some reason, the pieces we had weren't tender and melt-in-your-mouth. The Wagyu Steak Yakitori was super flavorful and tender. That was another great bite from the grill. We both loved the Grilled Salmon Belly w/Salt. It was flaky, juicy, and fatty. The Unagi Don was really good flavor-wise. It was interesting that the egg wasn't a wet scramble, but strips of cooked scrambled eggs. It was served with some pickled veg, which added a nice acidic crunch. We tried the Chicken Thigh Yakitori w/Enka Sauce. Again, such a simple ingredient, but it packed a ton of juicy flavor. The last savory dish was the Assorted Tempura. My friend doesn't usually eat a lot of fried food (I know, what's wrong with her?). hee hee But even she enjoyed the light and crispy shrimp and veggies. For dessert, I tried a scoop of their Yuzu Sorbet, and my friend tried their Green Tea Ice Cream. The food at Enka was great! My friend had a blast trying so many new things, and I enjoyed all of the tasty bites. Enka is definitely one of my new go-to favorites.

The grilled squid is also delicious and a fun item to order. Everything comes out pretty quickly, and the food is consistently enjoyable. The staff are friendly, too. One thing to keep in mind is that the bill can add up pretty quickly. With so many tempting skewers and a fun atmosphere, it's easy to lose track of how much you've ordered. But I think it's worth it for a good night out with food, drinks, and conversation. My only minor critique is that I wish the skewers had a little more of that smoky, chargrilled flavor. I'd love to see some of the meats spend just a bit longer on the grill to develop a deeper char. It's a small nitpick, though, and doesn't take away too much from the overall experience. Overall, this is a great place to hang out, enjoy some Japanese-style grilled skewers, and unwind after a long day. Definitely worth checking out, and I'll be back.

This is a classic izakaya but they are known for their homemade soba noodles which did not disappoint. We had the soba at the end to finish off the meal. Not to miss dishes included: 1. Housemade tofu - this was super creamy and soft. A great way to start the meal. 2. Yuba beancurd. I love this dish so when I see it on a menu I always order it and you could taste the freshness of this one. 3. The ebi toast added a nice fried appetizer alternative to the usual fried/heavy apps 4. Though not pictured, we ordered the duck soba which was really good. The unctuous broth from the duck fat coated the soba noodles and gave it a great depth of flavor. Much more unique than the regular tempura soba we also ordered. 5. They had a special salmon belly dish that was really good and would definitely order again if it's on the menu. 6. While I do enjoy a matsutake mushroom and it's in season right now, the price tag was a bit steep for the amount of mushrooms you get. Okay to skip this one. 7. The beef tongue was just okay, it's a nice presentation where you grill it yourself tableside but we've had better. 8. Save room for dessert! The soba pudding was so unique and super tasty. Like most Asian desserts, not too sweet and the toasted sesame seeds added a nice crunchy texture. We will definitely be back again to try more dishes.

Really enjoyed this cute and cozy izakaya in an unassuming strip mall. Made reservations for…read moreSaturday night dinner so we didn't have to wait at all. The staff was friendly and helpful. Food was pretty solid and delicious although a little on the salty side for me (but not for my friend). Tai chazuke - comforting, not too heavy, good opener. The salmon is apparently more popular if you're looking for stronger flavors. Agedashi tofu - good frying, liked the piece of mushroom that we had, broth was too salty /sweet for me Simmered gindara - fish was buttery and beautifully done. Broth too salty for me but my friend wanted to lick it up. Grilled Salmon belly - melt in your mouth fish. Pressed mackerel sushi - mackerel was buttery and tasty. Overall, I'd come back here with my family.

I feel…read morelike when the staff are happy and welcoming, I can even overlook food that isn't great But the food was actually good! We liked their sister restaurant a little more, but since we live in Mountain View, we'll be coming back whenever we're craving ramen. We ordered the Spicy Tantan and Chicken Paitan Deluxe. Our server recommended medium spice and I'm so glad we listened! It was spicy enough for us, and we actually love spicy food. I don't think we could've handled the spicy level One thing I didn't love about the Chicken Paitan Deluxe was that it only came with chicken on the side. At their sister restaurant, we had chicken both in the ramen and on the side. Here, without the chicken inside, it felt more like chicken broth with noodles. That's why I'm taking off one star. The kids' menu was good too. We sat outside on Castro Street, so I never actually went inside. It looked nice from the outside, but I can't really comment on the indoor atmosphere since I didn't experience it. Outside was just the usual Castro Street vibe, pretty much the same as everywhere else. Overall, we liked it! Not amazing, but definitely good.
