This used to be one of our favorite spots when we visit Charlottesville, but this time the experience didn't quite live up to expectations. The appetizer was very good, we ordered Sigara Börek and for entree combo Lamb and chicken but the entree was underwhelming, small in portion, a bit bland, and quite pricey. It had few pieces of bread which felt a bit dry. The service was fine, but nothing particularly stood out. On the bright side, the atmosphere was still very nice, with tasteful decor and the option for outdoor seating. We arrived during the early dinner hours, so it wasn't crowded. While we've had great meals here in the past, this visit left us questioning whether we'll return next time we're in town.
Can't say anything crazy here. The kinefe was nice. The pomegranate tea was delish. Vibes were great and clean. Kind of quiet for student move in day. The platter was plentiful and yummy
We stopped by Sultan Kebab for dessert and coffee. We ordered a kunefe; a warm, crispy dessert made with shredded phyllo dough, melted cheese, and sweet syrup, topped with pistachios. The service was friendly, the restaurant was beautiful, and the dessert was absolutely delicious. A perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a sweet treat or a full meal.
Best rice I've ever tasted never had less than a wonderful meal at Sultan Kabob and the owners are fantastic!
Stopped in while driving through Charlottesville based on the reviews. It was very good - the döner sandwich with fresh bread was great. The chicken shish was also good. The doner meat was not what I'm used to but was still good. Outdoor seating was a very nice.
High quality meat and great food all around, especially the kunefe which is a must have! Service was great and well-timed, plus it was a beautiful day outside -- highly recommend the outdoor seating if the weather is good. I'd say the only (slight) con was the price, but for this quality of food it's definitely worth it. The combo platter was more like 1.5 meals rather than 2 meals (if you're hungry).
We were super excited to eat here when we saw they had Turkish pizza which we haven't really seen on a menu since being in Istanbul in 2022. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday and were starving. They weren't very busy - probably three tables - the gals inside were playing on their phones and my husband had to go get them after we waited 10 minutes and no one came to get our order. We chose to get the Turkish pizza and hummus appetizer with a Shepherd's Salad. They have a ton of appetizers and a large selection on the menu if you love this sort of food - which we do. The salad was disappointing... more onion than anything else and not a lot of cucumber on a smaller plate than I expected. The pizza was delicious - hummus was good but we could've skipped it bc we went with a two protein entree that came with a small salad and hummus and pita bread. They have a single protein entree option or a double protein option which is a great price for two people to split so we went with two and chose the lamb and Köfte. Both were delicious. Lamb was great quality and hubs loved it. It was good - but service wasn't good - and the hummus and salad weren't amazing. Great option to have in C-ville but our experience was like a 3.5 at best. Parking can be an issue but there are plenty of parallel and paid lot options around.
Really great food! Had the lamb and it was amazing as well as the lentil soup to stay. The service was good, seems like a family owned business. Would definitely come again if in C-ville
Very authentic kebab place! Had the Doner kebab sandwich. It was good, the meat felt more processed than I anticipated but I'm sure it was fresh. I wish I would have known my sandwich came with sides because 1) I wasn't entirely sure what they were and 2) I would have substituted them for something else. Everyone else got the chicken shish kebab platters and loved it. The service was a little slow but overall atmosphere was nice. Wish we got dessert - they looked delicious!
One of the better meals we've had in Charlottesville so far! Stopped in on a Saturday night without a reservation and were lucky enough to be seated quickly. We started with the Halloumi cheese appetizer which was delicious but for the $7 price, we were hoping for more than two pieces of cheese in some sad looking lettuce. The chicken kebob platter and Adana kebob platter were both good and the portions were large! The four star review is solely due to the fact that a sauce or dip would have elevated the flavor of both entrees. The meat had good flavor but was quite dry. The table next to us were offered spices for the rice which would have been a nice way to add some depth but we were never offered any. Overall, a solid meal!
Small. The ambiance was ok. Expensive. Our meal came to $60 (including tip) for 2 people at lunch time! The chicken shish kabob was bland. The lamb was so so. Our server seemed distracted and had to be flagged down by another staff member. However, the hot pomegranate tea was great as well as the baklava! I'd go back just to have both. That's why there are 3 stars.
Sultan Kebab was an accidental surprise, and we absolutely loved it! I put in a semi-large order for my son and his grandparents (when we realized Sticks was closed on Sundays) and they did not disappoint. I should also say the dining room is world-class fancy -- not something you'd expect in downtown Charlottesville. They forgot to include our order of grape leaves but we didn't mind since the chicken skewers, rice and sides were so great. highly recommended!

Stopped by fall afternoon - group of 8 of us and we got a nice large table outside. For the COVID part - decent outdoor seating, all the waiters were wearing masks. There were people eating inside and spaced apart. Very cool atmosphere on the inside, would love to come back sometime post pandemic and really enjoy everything in there. STarted out with the turkish coffee - very strong and slight bitter taste, good fuel to continue the rest of the day. I was rather hungry and just went for the lamb and beef sausage combo. Lamb was very juicy, full of flavor, sausage slightly smoky, thin, not too greasy at all. Topped with bread and hummus and a light salad - this is the way to go for lunch all at the reasaonble cost of $18. My friends got the veggie platter and other variations of meat. IF you aren't feeling as hungry you can get the same combo just with one meat for $12 - but I fully suggest the double meat combo. The baklav looked perfect too, so will be definitely back for that at some point. read more
This is an authentic Turkish restaurant. We are outside, so no comment on the inside. The menu has many Turkish favorites (Iskander kabob, lamb kabob, etc). We got a lamb platter to a share. The lamb was moist and had real nice seasoning on it, the hummus was good, and the salad fresh with pickled onions--nice touch! We had to ask to have the lamb be done medium rare, normally they cook it well. Others got lamb kabob and chicken kabob wraps, which were equally delicious. read more
Sultan Kebab had become synonymous with a pit stop in Charlottesville for me over the years. If you can't find street parking, there are paid parking decks in walking distance. I've always loved the fresh food and the open, colorful vibe. The service can tend to be a bit slow here so i recommend ordering a specialty drink such ad their turkish coffee. This time i tried their yoghurt drink which is served cold and tasted like a mild buttermilk. My absolute favorite dish to order here is their lentil soup which tastes delicious with their rice. read more

Ordered takeout from here and it was delicious! I got the chicken kebab which comes with rice, salad, hummus and a big thick piece of bread. The entree was great. The chicken was flavorful and cooked perfectly.I also got the kenefe and baklava. The baklava was perfect, but the kenefe had a sort of weird phyllo to cheese ratio, but still pretty good! I would love to try their other kebabs. read more

Had to look for outdoor seating due to having taken the dog on the Shenandoah Sky Park. They were very accommodating given no reservation. Incredibly hospitable, food was delightful. Beer was served cold with a glass, ideal. read more

My partner die took a day trip to Charlottesville and settled on a sultan kebab for lunch. The staff was super friendly and we had zero wait time to be seated. We both opted for the sauté lunch sandwiches. I got the shrimp and my partner got the lamb. The bread for the sandwiches was incredibly soft and the sandwich itself was delicious. The sides however were the star of the show. Both were exceptionally flavorful and I definitely order it all again. I also ordered the lemon lime soda which was a perfect compliment for the sandwich it was light and not overly sweet. read more
This is probably one of my favorite places ever!! Right in heart of Charlottesville is this Gem. Beautiful place with extraordinary flavor infused dishes. Parking can be a little bit if a hassle because it's right along the main streets. For those that practice Halal eating, this place is for you!! I recommend the shrimp casserole. Enjoy!!!!! read more
Finally popped in to Sultan Kebab after a morning spent in town doing various errands and I'm glad I did! We sat down with our toddler son and were greeted by our friendly server who took our drink order and left us to stew over the menu. When he returned I asked him for his recommendations or personal favorites, as everything sounded good but I didn't have a great concept of what each dish would actually look/taste like. He recommended the Iskender Kebab Platter (ground beef and lamb sliced kebab style and served over rice with sauce), and also said the Izmir Kofte meatballs (veal) were really good, so I went with the platter, and my husband ordered the Izmir Kofte sandwich. We got an order of kid's chicken and rice for our son. The Kid's meal wasn't listed, but when I asked if we could just get a side of something for our son, our waiter said there was a variety of smaller portions offered as kids meals and asked if we'd like the chicken and rice, or a couple other suggestions. All of our portions were large, including the kids portion! My meal was lovely with the flavorful meat covered in a savory tomato sauce and yogurt for dipping it all in. I couldn't finish it all and left with enough meat for a tasty sandwich the next day. The sandwich was also very tasty, and the veal meatballs were tender and flavorful. I would get either option again. The kids chicken was still spiced, but after the first shock upon putting it in his mouth, our son loved it and ate 5 pieces plus a lot of rice, so it's safe to say he enjoyed. (I will caution parents with pickier kids/kids that can't take as much spice --not heat, just spice-- to ask about less seasoned meat or opt for meatballs or something instead.) We ended the meal just sharing a Turkish coffee as we were too stuffed to do a real dessert. I definitely want to come back and try something sweet, because the Turkish Delight and other sweets sounded really interesting and tasty. Definitely recommend: good service, delicious food, fair prices and generous portions. read more

This food is soooo yummy. Highly recommend. I ordered the chicken platter. The chicken was so tender and tasty. It comes with salad which is also so fresh and delicious. I came to this place from a friend's recommendation, and it did not disappoint. From the moment I walked in, the restaurant's decor and aesthetic took me to another place. I knew just from that, that the food was going to be amazing. The staff were so friendly and accommodating, even giving us lessons about Turkish food and history; they even gave us some free Turkish Delights to try out. When the food and drinks came out, we were stunned by the beautiful presentation of the food. We were even more shocked by how phenomenal the food was. Although I wish we could've gotten more meat with our entrees, the food was great nonetheless. This place has incredible staff, aesthetic, and food. If you want to try a new place and discover a new cuisine, come here and you will not be disappointed! read more

Yummy! This is an amazing spot for Mediterranean/Turkish food with a lovely area to dine outside on the deck/patio. There is also indoor seating which is nicely lit and decorated with beautiful artwork! We of course chose to enjoy the weather and sit outside! Upon sitting we had a few different employees help us with sitting, ordering drinks, and ordering food. I believe they may share responsibilities here which I love! We both ordered our favorite soda, ginger ale, and an appetizer of the hummus casserole to start! Our drinks came out promptly and our appetizer was around 5-10 minutes! The Hummus Casserole was baked with fresh tomatoes and a uniquely delicious kashar cheese! It was so much better than I expected. The hummus (bean dip like) part was warm, easy to spread, and topped with a melted, gooey, cheese. It honestly reminded me do a bean burrito type filling you dip their soft, fresh, bread into. You should definitely give this appetizer a try! I wasn't too hungry this night for anything large and I had been really wanting to try the chicken soup out! I knew I would like it so I ordered the bowl size! The soup came out hot and yummy! I loved the chunks of chicken and noodles along with all of the seasonings and spices! The soup also had a faint taste of lemon and perhaps a bit of yogurt (not too much) just enough to make it the slightest bit creamy! My husband ordered the Doner kebab sandwich which came thinly sliced, and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a side of yogurt sauce! The meat had a great lamb and beef flavor and was seasoned perfectly! His sandwich came with a white been salad served chilled and a tabouleh salad. Both were very nicely prepared, flavored, and portioned. We will definitely return to this spot for its quality food, proximity to downtown, friendly employees, and most importantly the awesome, authentic, Turkish food! read more

Pomegranate apple hot tea was so good! No honey needed just delicious crisp tea. Lentil soup was fantastic and delicious on a cool day. Halloumi was a delicious fried cheese. Adana and Chicken platter was bountiful and delicious too. Finished the meal with a delicious serving of Baklava. Overall excellent Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food. Will be back for more! read more

sultan kebab was my first introduction to turkish food and i have nothing but good things to say about these dishes. the hummus casserole was perfectly warm, cheesy, and nutty (my only complaint is that i wish there was MORE pita bc it was so good!). the lahmacun (a sort of turkish take on pizza that's topped with ground beef and a flavorful tomato sauce) was oh so crispy and delectable. for the main course i ordered the iskender platter and it was enormous! it came with rice, salad, yogurt, and meat drenched in tomato sauce on a bed of pita. the meat reminded me of greek gyro meat. not only was the meat juicy and tender, but the rice was PERFECTLY cooked. it's hard to come by perfectly cooked long grain rice. the servers are quite attentive of patrons' needs and the speed of service was adequate. i also appreciated the murals and other pieces of artwork they had around the restaurant, as it gave it a nice welcoming open feel. read more

3.5 years in the Middle East really gave me a desire for middle eastern/Mediterranean dishes and this place does not disappoint. We ordered the lentil soup, Halloumi and Sigara Borek as appetizers and both were delicious. I really like the unique taste of the cheeses from this region. The lentil soup was great, especially on a cold day. For the main course, we ordered a Adana + chicken dish and the flavors were perfect. You always have to end this kind of meal with baklava and it really hit the spot. read more
Came here on a date and we opted for outdoors seating because the weather was surprisingly nice in November. I liked the ambience of the outdoor area especially with the string lights they had hanging on the trees. I tried the chicken shish kebab platter and was pleasantly surprised by how much food came on the platter. I thought that everything was well executed and balanced on the platter but the chicken in particular was the star. The chicken was so juicy and had great flavor and a nice char! There was enough food for me to have leftovers the next day. read more

This was my first time having Turkish food and I was very impressed! I had the chicken kabobs, which were very good and comes with a good amount of food. The lamb and beef kabobs were also good. I would recommend getting the yogurt sauce as well. Inside the restaurant is clean and has nice art on the walls. I would sit outside if it's a warm night. Our waitress was also nice. read more

I cannot say enough great things about this place! The food is incredible-so many flavors. The food is hearty, filling and so tasty. This was our first time dining-in since covid and we felt so safe and distanced. The owners are extremely friendly and happy to share suggestions and describe menu items to us. We ordered the manti (meatball dumpling) and the vegetarian platter. It was too much food for just 2 people, but everything tasted amazing-I couldn't stop eating!! The vegetable mashed potato was so good. Definitely order the manti-you will not be disappointed!!! The babaganoush was also amazing! We will definitely be back every time we visit Charlottesville- highly recommend for takeout or dining!!! read more

When looking for a place to eat in Charlottesville, the last place I would think to go is Turkish! But since my friend had never had this cuisine, decided to try it out... And it did not disappoint! Started with the baked hummas and dolmas. Both very good. Spices on point. Then the Manti which the near was spiced just enough and completed with the yogurt and spices. Its best hit right when they give it to you so eat fast! Then the sausage and lamb kabobs... Delish! Lamb is standard but cooked well. The sausage is a dry Turkish sausage. Very good. Dessert of baklava is good. Pistachio and walnut varieties. Turkish coffee was a good topper for the drive home... Will be back! read more
Brought Mom for dinner here and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our service was excellent and the restaurant is quite lovely. They have seating outside (it was a bit too warm) and the inside is decorated nicely. Small and big tables available and the noise level was low. We each ordered a kebab platter, mom with just chicken and mine adding lamb. Very large portions. I was concerned that the big chunks of chicken might be dry but they were not. Delicious. Great taste, too. The rice was excellent and the hummus was very flavorful. We had enough room to share a dessert. The baklava is three pieces with a small dish of very good frozen yogurt. Ours were two with walnuts and one with pistachios. I liked the pistachio one more. Definitely would return to Sultan Kebab. Yum. read more

Some quality Turkish food served up at Sultan Kebab!! My party shared a few apps (dolma, baba ghanoush, kasarli mantra), all of which were good but certainly not the stars of the show. The combo platter entrees were HUGE and had plenty of food for leftovers. My favorites were the Adana kebab and lamb shish kebab. The side salad was the perfect light complement, and the hummus and pita were delicious. We finished the meal off with some yummy baklava and vanilla ice cream. A winning meal in my book! read more
