We met a couple here for lunch- they selected this location as they have eaten here before. It was at lunchtime and it was not overly crowded on a Saturday. My guess is with this location they are busier during the work week. Service was a little slow, but we were not in a hurry. I tried a Turkish beer which was pretty good!! We all had some different lunch entrees- I had chicken, my wife had a shrimp/cheese mix, another had a lamb entree and the last was a mix of beef and chicken. We also had some baklava for dessert. The shrimp were mini-shrimp and not very many in the meal. My chicken was ok The baklava was very good. The service is absolutely amazing. All the staff is so welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food is amazing and authentic. The ambiance is good, though it still looks like it was originally an old industrial building, like most buildings in the area it is welcoming and they have done their best to spruce it up with floor rugs, art, and objects. Sultan Kebab had become synonymous with a pit stop in Charlottesville for me over the years. If you can't find street parking, there are paid parking decks in walking distance. I've always loved the fresh food and the open, colorful vibe. The service can tend to be a bit slow here so i recommend ordering a specialty drink such ad their turkish coffee. This time i tried their yoghurt drink which is served cold and tasted like a mild buttermilk. Stopped by fall afternoon - group of 8 of us and we got a nice large table outside. For the COVID part - decent outdoor seating, all the waiters were wearing masks. There were people eating inside and spaced apart. Very cool atmosphere on the inside, would love to come back sometime post pandemic and really enjoy everything in there. STarted out with the turkish coffee - very strong and slight bitter taste, good fuel to continue the rest of the day. I was rather hungry and just went for the lamb and beef sausage combo. Lamb was very juicy, full of flavor, sausage slightly smoky, thin, not too greasy at all. Topped with bread and hummus and a light salad - this is the way to go for lunch all at the reasaonble cost of $18. My friends got the veggie platter and other variations of meat. IF you aren't feeling as hungry you can get the same combo just with one meat for $12 - but I fully suggest the double meat combo. This is an authentic Turkish restaurant. We are outside, so no comment on the inside. The menu has many Turkish favorites (Iskander kabob, lamb kabob, etc). We got a lamb platter to a share. The lamb was moist and had real nice seasoning on it, the hummus was good, and the salad fresh with pickled onions--nice touch! They took their order first and then ours and then serves them their food first. The staff checked with them frequently but never checked in with us. sultan kebab was my first introduction to turkish food and i have nothing but good things to say about these dishes. the hummus casserole was perfectly warm, cheesy, and nutty (my only complaint is that i wish there was MORE pita bc it was so good!). the lahmacun (a sort of turkish take on pizza that's topped with ground beef and a flavorful tomato sauce) was oh so crispy and delectable. for the main course i ordered the iskender platter and it was enormous! it came with rice, salad, yogurt, and meat drenched in tomato sauce on a bed of pita. the meat reminded me of greek gyro meat. not only was the meat juicy and tender, but the rice was PERFECTLY cooked. it's hard to come by perfectly cooked long grain rice. the servers are quite attentive of patrons' needs and the speed of service was adequate. i also appreciated the murals and other pieces of artwork they had around the restaurant, as it gave it a nice welcoming open feel. read more

Finally popped in to Sultan Kebab after a morning spent in town doing various errands and I'm glad I did! We sat down with our toddler son and were greeted by our friendly server who took our drink order and left us to stew over the menu. When he returned I asked him for his recommendations or personal favorites, as everything sounded good but I didn't have a great concept of what each dish would actually look/taste like. He recommended the Iskender Kebab Platter (ground beef and lamb sliced kebab style and served over rice with sauce), and also said the Izmir Kofte meatballs (veal) were really good, so I went with the platter, and my husband ordered the Izmir Kofte sandwich. We got an order of kid's chicken and rice for our son. The Kid's meal wasn't listed, but when I asked if we could just get a side of something for our son, our waiter said there was a variety of smaller portions offered as kids meals and asked if we'd like the chicken and rice, or a couple other suggestions. All of our portions were large, including the kids portion! My meal was lovely with the flavorful meat covered in a savory tomato sauce and yogurt for dipping it all in. I couldn't finish it all and left with enough meat for a tasty sandwich the next day. The sandwich was also very tasty, and the veal meatballs were tender and flavorful. I would get either option again. The kids chicken was still spiced, but after the first shock upon putting it in his mouth, our son loved it and ate 5 pieces plus a lot of rice, so it's safe to say he enjoyed. (I will caution parents with pickier kids/kids that can't take as much spice --not heat, just spice-- to ask about less seasoned meat or opt for meatballs or something instead.) We ended the meal just sharing a Turkish coffee as we were too stuffed to do a real dessert. I definitely want to come back and try something sweet, because the Turkish Delight and other sweets sounded really interesting and tasty. As a vegetarian, I LOVE this place!!! We get the veggie platter and split it between two people and get an extra piece of bread and sometimes an extra serving of dolmas. Every single part of the platter is DELICIOUS, I'm seriously not kidding. It's served on a homemade pita bread, except it's not your regular pita bread. It's soft, spongy and bready on the inside, and a great chew on the outside. It was generously filled with tender and smoky grilled beef & lamb meat as well as lettuce, tomato and onion. The yogurt sauce that came with it was fantastic to dip the sandwich in and provided a cooling effect. The hummus (bean dip like) part was warm, easy to spread, and topped with a melted, gooey, cheese. It honestly reminded me do a bean burrito type filling you dip their soft, fresh, bread into. You should definitely give this appetizer a try! I wasn't too hungry this night for anything large and I had been really wanting to try the chicken soup out! I knew I would like it so I ordered the bowl size! The soup came out hot and yummy! I loved the chunks of chicken and noodles along with all of the seasonings and spices! The soup also had a faint taste of lemon and perhaps a bit of yogurt (not too much) just enough to make it the slightest bit creamy! My husband ordered the Doner kebab sandwich which came thinly sliced, and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a side of yogurt sauce! The meat had a great lamb and beef flavor and was seasoned perfectly! His sandwich came with a white been salad served chilled and a tabouleh salad. Came here on a date and we opted for outdoors seating because the weather was surprisingly nice in November. I liked the ambience of the outdoor area especially with the string lights they had hanging on the trees. I tried the chicken shish kebab platter and was pleasantly surprised by how much food came on the platter. The Adana was strangely tough. I wasn't expecting that. We didn't finish it. The grain side (forget what it was called) was too sweet. Wife and I tried this out. We have eaten a lot of 'Mediterranean' food. This place wasn't *bad* but it was very underwhelming. For it to be rated so highly makes me doubt Yelp's users' food experience. Everything was just so bland - I'm not sure the sour cherry juice wasn't ocean spray cranberry juice to be honest. We got beef and lamb but pretty sure either they taste exactly the same (they shouldn't) or we never actually got any lamb. $6 for 2 little pieces of cheese was disappointing as well. The grape leaves were fine though. All of that being said, definitely the worst part was we called ahead to ask about dogs, they said they're fine. We show up and rather than seating us on the outdoor patio where everyone is, they seat us on the sidewalk and at the farthest table, even though all of the other tables were empty...we have a very well trained golden so it's not like he specifically was an issue, and it was just weird to choose that area and the farthest table away to seat us. This was our first time dining-in since covid and we felt so safe and distanced. The owners are extremely friendly and happy to share suggestions and describe menu items to us. Started with the baked hummas and dolmas. Both very good. Spices on point. Then the Manti which the near was spiced just enough and completed with the yogurt and spices. Its best hit right when they give it to you so eat fast! Then the sausage and lamb kabobs... Delish! Lamb is standard but cooked well. The sausage is a dry Turkish sausage. Very good. Brought Mom for dinner here and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our service was excellent and the restaurant is quite lovely. They have seating outside (it was a bit too warm) and the inside is decorated nicely. Small and big tables available and the noise level was low. We each ordered a kebab platter, mom with just chicken and mine adding lamb. Very large portions. I was concerned that the big chunks of chicken might be dry but they were not. Delicious. Great taste, too. The rice was excellent and the hummus was very flavorful. We had enough room to share a dessert. The baklava is three pieces with a small dish of very good frozen yogurt.
