Service was fast and food came out quick. The tea was very good but also very sweet. Pad Thai also very good however extremely oily with few vegetables.

We were looking for someplace to go to Dinner on a Sunday night in Albany and I've since been told that, most places are closed. However we stumbled upon Sukhothai and decided to try it out. It is a hole in the wall kinda place with just a few tables. Seems like they do a lot of take out from the amount of people I saw coming in and out to pick up. Every table was taken we were lucky to get a table and not have to wait. The dining area isn't anything special and is very small but it's clean. The staff were friendly and service was quick. The menu is sufficient and pricing is reasonable. I thought the food was fresh and decent. I wouldn't say it's the most flavorful Thai food I've ever had but I enjoyed it. I don't like a lot of spice or heat so I like Thai food that is milder, someone else who likes more spice and heat might not enjoy this or might have to ask them for more spice. All in all a good experience.

I am not sure if they have a new cook in the kitchen but Sukho Thai used to be one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Albany. It is highly unlikely that I will go back. I ordered the Massaman Curry with Duck. It is my go to meal in any Thai restaurant. This time, I was very disappointed. The curry was salty and there were only 3 pieces of duck, two of which had bones. In the past, the dish was enough that I would take home leftovers; not any more. But then again, with the quality of the meal I had, I probably would not have wanted leftovers a yw

We hadn't planned to have lunch at Sukhothai but seeing the 4-star rating, we thought we'd give it a try. We were initially the only patrons until three other tables arrived shortly after we were seated. Our server was extremely helpful and courteous as he answered our questions and offered suggestions. We chose homemade dumplings as our appetizer and Laht Nah and Pad Thai as our entrees. The dumplings did seem to be 'homemade' rather than a staple product from a food purveyor. They were flavorful and the dumpling was cooked well. We enjoyed both sauces which came with them. The Pad Thai had a different flavor or spice than we're used to which was interesting and good - a dish we would order again. Our server stated the Laht Nah was 'soupy' and it was which made it somewhat difficult to eat in the shallow serving bowl. It might be better if they served it in a soup bowl. The restaurant looked to be clean and was comfortable enough. We enjoyed our visit and look forward to going again sometime soon.

The food here is not meant for Asian people. The taste is for the American only. Look at that pad see ew. The pictures said it all. Tasteless and bland. This id sad because this is an Asian restaurant and they're not going to pass to an Asian customers. They should taste their food first. I think the chef is not Asian. That's why? I see latinos cooking in the kitchen. But dont order any pasta. The curry is ok. The service is 3/5

Maybe it's me. I have to say, though, that my quest for a local Thai place that consistently knocks my socks off remains unfulfilled. I was really wanting some Thai soup and ended up here when I found out that my first choice was closed. Split the chicken satay with a friend and found it very dry and tough. My soup was perfectly edible, but nothing about it struck me as super fresh or flavorful -- they're probably not grinding spices back in the kitchen. Service was slow and scattered: I got the sense that they didn't have enough staff to keep up with both takeout and dine-in orders. The Thai tea with lemon was tasty, and portions were very generous. Not a terrible meal, but not my favorite option around either.

My friend and I walked here to get some Thai food after visiting the state capitol. Service was good. I had pad Thai with chicken and shrimp which was on the point. I really enjoyed the sauce. My friend had curry and she said it was good too. We had mango sticky rice for dessert. Mango was kind of raw so not very sweet. The sticky rice with condensed milk was yummy. Good place for quick lunch but nothing very outstanding.

Hole in the wall with a few tables & lots of takeout. I'd be willing to try half the menu. I ordered seafood noodle soup for a bit over $10, expecting a small soup, hung about of seafood wonderful prepared. My spouse ordered green curry tofu with mixed veggies. Big portion there as well.

This is a great hole-in-the-wall place for Thai food with what looks like less than ten small tables inside. The service is friendly, efficient, and attentive. You will be surprised with the choices here including fried rice, pan fried noodles, noodle soups, curry rice plates, soups and salads. It kind of reminds me of the Thai food courts in Thailand's mega malls where theres just so much to choose from...especially since the portions are large and prices are small. There's something for everyone with choices of tofu, vegetables, chicken, beef, pork, and duck. I love getting the noodles and curry ..anything with a good kick of spice as well. The drinks are very good and similar to what I've had in Thailand...I recommend the Thai Iced Tea. Dessert wise I usually go for the sticky rice with mango. Just keep your party small (2-4people) and it will be a good time. If you're looking for more space they have a second location on Central Ave.

This place is fire. The subterranean location on Lark Street is small but cozy as heck. When I came here last, it was freezing and windy and I was craving some real stick-to-your-bones, hot food. So we hiked over to Sukhothai and got us some joy. We came pretty early in the evening and it was pretty quiet. There was only one other couple in the restaurant but they were very busy with takeout orders. We sat at a table and the waitress immediately took our order for some hot sake. After perusing the menu a bit we decided to share a couple of items. Bae and I ordered some kind of bbq pork and Thai red curry because we basic. The BBQ pork was ok but the curry was some of the best I've ever had. My friend ordered duck noodle soup and that was really good too. The service was quick and our food came out in not time. We split the bill 3 ways and each payed less than $20 AND we all had leftovers. For value, service and quality, this place definitely crushes it.

Jessica P.

My friend and I had dinner last night and for only $35 we had a delicious appetizer of samosas which were blazing hot when served and satisfying when eaten. We added two entrees--I had to try the Pad Thai & we had curry salmon-and OMG ate it all!!! This place is super small but amazingly busy and had great service. Highly recommend you check it out even though it looks so unassuming from the outside.

I was underwhelmed by my experience. The décor and the cramped quarters were downsides, and friends told me to expect that going in, so all that aside, I'll focus on the food, which was abundant (huge portions) but pretty pedestrian. I ordered the Pad See Ew with duck and it was far from the best I've had, just a big bowl of brown sauce and noodles, and I twice had to pull bones out of the chunks of duck. The duck was kind of rubbery too, which I haven't experienced at other Thai joints. Overall, this is a pass. Not the worst, but there's far better Thai out there. read more

Excellent good and lots of it for the money! We ordered three main dishes thinking there'd be enough leftovers for another meal and there ended up being enough for two more meals! The spicy bamboo was great, but be warned that it is truly spicy. The pumpkin curry was probably our favorite, although the cilantro fried rice was delicious as well! The servers were also very nice and attentive, despite the restaurant being busy on a Sunday night. The food came fast as well. A wonderful dining experience all around! read more

Ordered the classic pad thai with chicken, glass noodles. I thought the flavors were robust, but the noodles were drenched in flavor (wetter noodles, harder to separate from the mound of noodles imho) which isn't what I wanted. I think discrete noodles is a personal preference after eating thai for a long time in different cities. Agree with previous posts that the quarters are cramped but service is probably ok for small groups. I would explore other Thai places (check out Kinnaree) on Lark and larger restaurants for a more spacious seating arrangement. Drinks here such as Thai ice tea is standard. read more

Best Thai food in the Capital Region. Truly fits the tale of the 'best' food found in a hole in wall place. Seriously has the best thai iced tea I've ever tasted - and you get a nice, tall glass too - they don't skimp on size! Prices are decent as well. We've been able to share a curry (ordered extra rice), two iced teas, and an appetizer for under $25. Service is great - expect big smiles, courteous service throughout the meal, and a big THANKS FOR COMING when you leave! The only issue is that parking can be a bit of a hassle on Lark Street...but it's worth it if you want authentic Thai food, great prices, and great service. read more

I hate to give them 3 stars when the food is worthy of 5 stars, but since they closed their location on Central Ave, service has taken a SERIOUS turn for the worst. First, they significantly increased their prices by $2-3 per entree. Ok, fine. The last time I went there, I called in my order and was told 30 minutes. I showed up 40 minutes later and half of it hadn't even been made yet. I had to sit for another 15 minutes and wait, which isn't a huge deal, but they acted annoyed when I made it a point to ask why it hadn't been made yet, after I had come past the time that THEY gave me to pick up! I wish they would re-open the other location. I don't really have the desire to go anymore, considering they don't have the staff necessary to keep business moving. Too bad, I really, REALLY love their food. read more

Many people get take out from here which I will admit, we have done twice but we really enjoy dining in at the restaurant because it's fun. The staff is really nice and extremely helpful. When we say vegan they know what we mean which is difficult sometimes because a lot of people have misconceptions about what that entails. You have to think about what ingredients the noodles were made with, do they contain egg or not. What sauces are traditionally used, is it a fish sauce? Is something cooked with butter? So just saying no meat, eggs, or dairy doesn't always make people think about everything but this restaurant gets it. Also people ask well what about gluten? It has nothing to do with being vegan it is related to having celiac disease. Bottom line, if you have food allergies or sensitivities, they know what is in their food and they will tell you or offer suggestions to help you out. The spring rolls, the gyoza, the crazy noodle (drunken noodle), curry rice, fresh rolls, all of it has been good everytime we go. This review is long overdue, Tamarind is just so good if you need vegan or vegetarian options they have a lot of plant-based menu items. The unsweetened iced tea, that's my jam! Love it!

Tengu Asian Bistro - Take Out (4.5/5)…read more After trying numerous different sushi spots in the Capital Region, Tengu Sushi has become my go to sushi spot. If you are looking for some really good sushi for a reasonable price at lunch time, Tengu Asian Bistro is definitely a place to check out. I go to Tengu Asian Bistro pretty frequently for their 3 roll lunch combo. This past time I ordered a shrimp tempura roll, spicy tuna roll, and a Philadelphia roll. The Philadelphia roll here is probably one of my favorite versions of the roll. I've ordered sushi from many places and this still holds up as either my number 1 or number 2. The spicy tuna roll again is excellent with great flavor and a good amount of crunch from the tempura flakes. The Shrimp tempura is another roll I always struggle to not order since it is quite good. I've also ordered the spicy salmon and eel avocado rolls here before among others, and they are all really great. The 3 roll lunch combo comes with your choice of either a side salad or miso soup. I prefer the salad which has an awesome dressing that comes with it, but the miso soup is also very good. Overall, I would highly recommend trying Tengu Asian Bistro if you are a fan of sushi and are looking for something to eat for lunch!

Great lunch today with my daughter. Food (lunch specials)…read morewas five stars plus. Service was five stars. Always searching for good Thai food, and this small restaurant did not disappoint. Not only does it have excellent Thai food, it also has one page of their menu offering Korean choices. There are separate lunch and dinner menus. Both menus are easy to navigate and clearly written. Their menus state designated spicy dishes can be modified on a scale of 1 to 5. There are numerous lunch specials offered. They come with miso soup or green salad. The waitress (owner?) was friendly, helpful, and attentive. We started with Spring Rolls and tea. Tea bags were placed in large mugs. I would have preferred a pot of brewed tea and small handleless cups offered at a few other places. We ordered lunch specials: Drunken Noodles with Tofu and Pang Kamee with Chicken. The soup broth was flavorful but could have had more tofu pieces. The Spring Rolls were average. My Pang Kamee was seasoned perfectly. Very tasty, it was seasoned nicely with spices, but not hot. I liked the perfectly cooked wide noodles and thinly sliced carrots. The chicken was moist and tender. The Drunken Noodles was also enjoyed by my daughter. What was exceptional about it was the Tofu! There were large pieces of tofu that were sautéed or grilled slightly. Delicious! Best tofu she has eaten in a long time. Our portions were generous, and both meals were finished because they were tasty. The restaurant has nine uncrowded tables and does a lot of takeout. I'm from the Bay (SF, Berkeley, Oakland) and Los Angeles areas of California with food scenes that are absolutely incredible. Upon moving to Albany, I was looking for a favorite local restaurant to become my new go-to place. I found one in Sukhothai. My expectations were low (read first sentence), but I was so so soo surprised to find such a BOMB Thai place in Albany!!! YES. Food is awesome. I have tried about 8 different entrees and 3 different appetizers, and their Thai coffee and Thai tea. Everything has been awesome. Favorites are: duck soup, pineapple fried rice, and basil chicken over rice with a fried egg. Very flavorful, great portion size, and perfectly priced (especially with lunch specials). Ordering online and by phone is super easy and efficient and they always have it ready to go before the time deadline. The restaurant itself gets pretty packed for dinner time (people know wassup). Ambiance and decor are a little tacky/cheesy, but the food and exceptional service make up for it. Great responsive staff. Love. read more

Next, the beef pad thai, the pad see ew noodles dish combo that had pork beef and shrimp as well as the tom yum noodle soup with seafood and it was all very good! To finish off, I decided to try the seasonal mango with sticky rice. It was definitely something different and in my opinion an acquired taste. We were told when we went to pick up, that the phone line is on the same line as the credit card machine, which is why the calls kept going right to voicemail. I love a good Thai curry, and went for the Red Curry with Tofu ("Thai curry prepared with green beans, zucchini, red & green peppers, peas and basil in red curry coconut milk sauce. Spicy.") We ordered for dinner, and my meal was $14 and came with a scoop of rice. I was a bit unimpressed with the sauce, which seemed a little watery, and I would definitely describe it as watered down. I think it would have been much more flavorful if it was thicker or more concentrated. The menu also says this dish is spicy, but I only detected a little bit of heat to it. Normally I find myself needing rice to go with curry, but this was not the case. There was some fried eggplant in the curry, which was fantastic, but the green beans seemed undercooked and overall, I was underwhelmed. (I get some very flavorful and delicious Thai Red Curry with tofu for almost half the price at the Chinese place up the road, so I was disappointed with both the food and the portion). My husband ordered the Pad See Ew, a Thai standard that he has enjoyed many times over the years at different establishments. We both tried this and agreed that like my dish, this was also a bit bland. The menu has a lot of choices on it, and I hope that the issues we had were simply an issue of this restaurant getting their bearings, but I don't see us ordering in the near future.
