I came to the restaurant with my friend (both of us are wheelchair users) for brunch. We were given the option to eat inside or outside and were told the inside was a little crowded so outside would have more room so we opted for that option. The patio did get a bit hot as we weren't in much shade so I would choose to potentially sit inside next time. The food was good, and the staff were excellent however the overall accessibility of the restaurant could be improved. The lip to get through the main door wasn't a super smooth transition, and the tables were a bit close together for me to move through freely. In additional the bathrooms were not accessible at all. The bathroom that was not labelled as accessible had a door potentially wide enough for me to fit through but a step to get inside, yet the door on the bathroom that was labelled as accessible was to small for me or my friend to get through (And my wheelchair quick compact and small). The signage indicating where the bathrooms are and which one is accessible could have also been improved and more visible from the front of the restaurant. My friend and I would love to eat here again, but due to accessibility it probably won't be high on my list of options or a place I'd recommend to my other friends with mobility needs. read more

I loved the atmosphere of this place! I biked here for brunch and was able to sit on the patio and enjoy the ever so limited - warm summer morning. I had the breakfast sandwich on special for $8 and was extremely satisfied. The bread on that sandwich was bomb - nice crunch on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. I paired it with a homemade chai tea latte $5 and well worth it! It had an amazing spice and aroma and a good touch of nuttiness from the speckles of pistachios on top. Lastly, I shared half of the giant cinnamon bun with my partner and was pleasantly surprised. It tasted great, but I did miss the cream cheese frosting that cinnamon buns usually come with. Just visited SugarBowl recently with my bff, where we had charcuterie and salad, along with a bottle of wine, before Pecha Kucha night at Metro Cinema. It had been a long time since I visited the SugarBowl, and my positive experience reminded me that I should go there more often! We scored an outdoor patio seat, and the ambiance was wonderful. Being in the university area, surrounded by trees, interesting people, and a large variety of sights and sounds was relaxing yet uplifting! The service was impeccable and we very much enjoyed our server, as well as her wine recommendation. The charcuterie and salad was well-priced, and we enjoyed every last bite. Our server even gave us extra bread as we ran out before we finished our charcuterie meats and cheeses. For the future - I also noticed there are MANY very intriguing and delicious beers on special for happy hour, so I will need to make sure to return again :) There is a reason the SugarBowl has been open forever! read more

A great place for breakfast with a variety of offerings to satisfy whatever you're craving. The restaurant is small and was quite packed on a Sunday morning. We arrived around 1030am and there was a pretty long list of people waiting for a table. Because there were only two of us, we opted to sit at the bar since it was first-come. To be honest, I liked this seat because you had the chance to watch the bartenders in action while checking out all the food heading out of the kitchen. They have great specials that change from day to day and on this particular morning, it just so happened to be bison bratwurst with poached eggs and potatoes. I had to try it and was excited to try this meat treat. When it arrived in front of me, it was a huge sausage with two perfectly cooked eggs. I made sure to break them close to the starchy side to help soak up all that delicious yolk. I imagined that the brat would be gamey, but it had a great smokey flavor to it. I had a few bites of Jenny M's chicken and waffles and they were great. The chicken was perfectly crispy while the delicious Canadian maple syrup that accompanies the selection complimented everything just right. She got full and I finished her dish... Couldn't let good food go to waste! They have an espresso menu as well as a full bar with a great list of beers. I really wanted to try their house made cinnamon rolls, but they were out already for the day. They're apparently all the rage and go super quick. It was cool to be right near the UofA campus and I guess we lucked out with our late lunch, that we didn't have to wait to get a table at SugarBowl! I loved the casual atmosphere, and the food did not disappoint. While I didn't get to try the famous cinnamon buns or choose from the crazy huge list of beer, I did enjoy lunch and would totally return in the future. I went with a tuna melt sandwich and the soup of the day, which happened to be a chickpea curry soup of sorts and was very tasty. The sandwich, served open-faced on a whole grain bagel was huge and filling. I recommend requesting some fresh sliced tomato on the side! Came here with my best friend on my birthday back in May. The service was prompt and our waitress was pleasant and observant when my BFF mentioned it being my birthday. My bf ordered a glass of with lunch but sadly it had turned. She opted for a glass of Sangria after I told her how great it was. It wasn't to sweet and was really quite boozy! Just about perfect if you ask me! I had a hard time trying to decide what to have so she mentioned having a scoop of the Bison Chilli on top of the Mac and Cheese! Absolutely HEAVENLY!! We decided to share the Banana Cream Pie for dessert and I would have licked the plate clean if it wasn't so busy! I will be back for sure! Now, this place packs up quickly so be prepared to wait. I saw an ad for Sugarbowl in Edmonton's weekly alt-mag Vue last week. It claimed the hip, local fixture bakes up the city's best cinnamon buns - so I had to see and taste for myself. I wandered in there Sunday, mid-morning, and the brunch crowd had the place packed and humming with coffee-fuelled conversation, clanking cutlery and lots of greasy, hungover smiles with mouthfuls of smoked salmon and avocado omelettes, home fries and eggs benny. I stood at the bar, where several patrons sat on high stools sipping cappuccinos from tall glass mugs, and ordered my cinnamon bun. As I waited, I caught a glimpse of one of the sugary treats on someone else's side plate (it needs its own plate!!) and it looked sugar-rush worthy. When my own bun came, still warm, and wrapped in cellophane, I cradled it in two hands (it was bigger than my one hand!) and immediately started salivating at smells emitting from whirlpools of rolled and layered cinnamon and doughy goodness, destined for my mouth. Grandmas who are permanently dusted in flour, and have clocked a lifetime of kitchen hours and have pudgy, little grandchildren, bake cinnamon buns like these. This is a popular restaurant in Edmonton, so my boyfriend and I stopped by yesterday to see what the hype was about. It was quite croweded but we didn't have to wait too long for a table. The dining area had a lot tables so it felt pretty cramped and difficult to maneuver around the tables. The women's restroom had no toilet paper and a large roll of papertowels was used as a replacement. But the bathroom was clean and, overall, the vibe was pretty laidback. I ordered the chicken and waffles, which was tasty and happened to be a very popular dish. The chicken was moist and savory. My boyfriend had the jerk chicken and avocado burger that we both agreed was the bomb diggity. The typical "cafe" beverages are pretty good, although I didn't care too much for the hot chocolate. SugarBowl is small, and has an open kitchen/bar area. While the main area of the restaurant looks good, the back area is less than clean. The vibe in here is great; very relaxed with a good crowd. There's even live music on some nights. I paid my first visit to the Sugar Bowl for brunch and I cannot believe it never occurred to me to try the place before. The selection of brunch items are mouth-watering in their descriptions, affordable at around $12, and include unique ingredients like avocado and non-standard items like a chicken waffle. I had the special, which was an avocado and smoked salmon omelet - the combination may have seemed strange at first, but these are two of my favourite things and they tasted great together. The accompanying potatoes were moist without being greasy, but they weren't all that hot and a few were hard. The bacon and cheese omelet my friend ordered was equally appreciated. We also shared a cinnamon bun to start, and it was arguably the best I have ever had - huge, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, with lots of oozing, buttery cinnamon. I was very impressed with the selection of beer. There were about twelve beers on tap, including ones not typically seen such as a microbrew from Quebec. There were so many bottled choices, I lost count. It almost seemed like too much. I liked the bohemian atmosphere and location. Sugarbowl needs no introduction. With an insane amount of likes on Urbanspoon (over 2,300!) and the most blog posts I've seen for Edmonton, I guess it's my turn to chime in. But first, guess whose never been to Sugarbowl? ME. I tend to avoid places filled with man buns and brunch fanatics so that's pretty much why I haven't hit up this uber popular student hot spot until now. It was my friend's birthday so we braved the hipster Friday crowds and attempted to get in. Be prepared to wait. Our group had to for an hour and half. Insanity! I can say with 100% confidence that there's no place in Edmonton where I would ever wait that long for a spot. It also doesn't help that Sugarbowl has the smallest entrance foyer but at least there's heat lamps outside? Here's some advice - either get there early or don't go with a group bigger than four and you'll (probably) have a chance. There were seven of us so everyone ordered a dish or two to eat. Exception was us, we ordered three to share. Hashtag winning. Nonetheless, my friend was in food comatose after that. Lucky I didn't order the daily soup (carrot ginger), haha. There were a lot of dishes but I'll only go through the ones I have pictures of and that I tasted. - Flights of beer ($18.00 for 6 samples) - two of my buddies ordered this and they were able to try a bunch of different beer flavours. Cool way to sample more beers if that's your thing! A bit pricey though. - Sir Perry pear cider ($8.00) - the pear taste is subtle but this cider grew on me the more I drank it. - Charcuterie platter ($14.00) - cured meat, artisan cheese and olives. Comes out on a long, fancy wooden board. There were three different types of meat and five cheeses along with a couple pieces of pita bread. Nice starter to share with friends. - Chicken and waffles ($14.00) - buttermilk, spice marinated chicken breast, waffles and a maple butter dipping sauce. One of my buddies recommended me this dish, which he loves, so I knew I had to try it. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. The waffle and chicken didn't have that "no one touch my chicken and waffles, it's all mine" factor to it. The waffles weren't light and fluffy. The chicken was a bit chewy and I didn't get much from their spice marinade. It was decent but I wanted mind blowing, like my buddy claimed. - Wild sockeye salmon linguine ($14.00) - shallot, garlic cream sauce and parmesan. This was my favourite of the three dishes we ordered. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the linguine was al dente with a rich, creamy texture. - Red coconut curry laksa ($16.00) - PEI mussels, tiger prawns, and mushrooms. Don't expect a real curry laksa but for what it's worth, it was reasonably decent. The prawns were tasty but there wasn't a hint of spice to the dish. Comes with linguine noodles as well, which I wasn't expecting. But it's what my friend was craving so I guess it hit the spot for her. - Mac n' cheese ($12.00) - pretty good bang for your buck. The mac n' cheese is massive and you could easily share this between two people. - Bread pudding ($6.00) - the desserts were huge! This bread pudding had a bunch of raisins inside of it. - Banana cream pie ($6.00) - I don't normally love banana cream pie but this was the winner of the two desserts the group tried. Light, creamy goodness. We could have licked the bowl clean (it may have happened). Maybe Sugarbowl is better for brunch and lunch. They have $10.00 daily lunch specials with a beer - not to shabby. For us, dinner was good but when you factor in the whole evening and the wait, I can't see myself going anytime soon. Sorry Sugarbowl, sugar you later. read more

Tables were sticky and servers were overworked and unhappy. Food was not worth the price but not super bad. If you can snag a table outside on their patio, it's the best place to be on a beautiful sunny morning... Oh and get there early as the place fills up fast and they don't take reservations - so be prepared to wait otherwise. Parking is also a pain in the butt in this area. The Sugar Bowl is a "mature" campus haunt, if you know what I mean. While almost every university student has been here, it's a bit of a classed up place to come to (and on a side, I certainly don't consider Earl's to be a "mature" campus haunt). With an exceptional selection of beers which is far from a boring list of Stella, Grasshöpper, Blue Moon and others that seem prevalent on Whyte, Sugar Bowl has a lot of respect for their beer choice. I might be wrong, but they have about 40-50 beers with a frequently changing chalk board of drafts that come and go. The food is decent with a few surprises like the lamb burger, some Indian curry influenced stuff and of course, their tasty bbq flavored popcorn. Although a strange choice for an appetizer, it really does justice to its name. Their popcorn is perhaps the healthiest appetizer I've had at a bar! They have interesting stuff on their wall which periodically changes too. The morning coffee is good and I'm not big on cinnamon buns, so I haven't really tried it. Do go for their omelette of the day. It's always a nice surprise if you're someone who likes surprises. Else at least ask them what the omelette of the day is on that day. read more

I know it's drenched in some butter syrup concoction, but the waffle should still have a crispy exterior and soft interior, but it was chewy and hard to get through. I also wished the chicken was crispier, and yipe, the salad looked like a wilted after thought. Well I have a love hate relationship with Sugar Bowl. It's so outta my way, but when I want to grab a coffee on Whyte Ave on a weekday, this place opens late; sometimes till 1:00am! There's a lot of trendy University students here enjoying each other and talking about there studies and the future. The servers here are sophisticated and have a good social attitude. I haven't had much of there food items and I seldom come here for there meals, but the coffee here is great especially with continuous refill! I've always been a little on the fence about SugarBowl. On one hand, I love the rustic look, the wide open windows, the great beer selection.... on the other, I hate that it's always silly busy, that it's so crowded it's hard to walk between tables (fire regulations, anybody?), and that, oftentimes, the servers are unkind. On my latest visit, there were a bunch of open tables so I asked a bus boy if I could grab one or if I should wait (they seem to switch between "seat yourself" and "wait to be seated" and they never have any signage indicating)... anyways, he said to wait to be seated. The hostess came by a moment later and told us there would be a 10-15 min wait. I found it odd, since there were tables open, but whatever. There were some guys behind us so we couldn't get back outside to wait (if you've ever been, you know how crowded that door area gets...). Anyways, after less than a moment the hostess comes back and very harshly tells us to go wait outside. Yikes! Anyways, we eventually get a table, and our actual server was a very friendly (British? Australian? Not sure..) man. He offered drink suggestions and advised on the menu when asked. Service was quick and he asked if we wanted more whenever our drinks were dwindling. Anyways, as I said, hit or miss. I've also been and had really terrible service. I find they tend to hire disenfranchised university students who really don't want to be there. As far as the food goes, I find it a little hit or miss. I've had quite a few menu items over the years... Smoked Paprika Popcorn - delicious! It comes with a slice of lime, too! Mac n' Cheese - really really good, would definitely get again. Very cheesy, warm, and homey. Meatball Sliders - WAY. TOO. SPICY. Not just a little spicy. Inedible spicy. Which would be fine if they indicated on the menu that they're spicy. But they don't. Jerk Chicken Burger - Also too spicy for me (though at least they indicate it... I mean 'jerk' is usually spicy Cinnamon Bun - good, but I don't really get the hype? My friend and I went at an off-peak time (we thought) of 4:30pm and aside from a couple seats at the bar and a large table the restaurant was packed. Granted the pace isn't very big, but if you're going for dinner, or lunch, or brunch, or breakfast know it could be busy, and you might need to wait (they don't take reservations either). We sat down and after a couple minutes a waitress brought us some water and menus. The SugarBowl has a fantastic beer selection, both domestic and imports. I got an organic Pinkus hefeweizen, which is a German wheat beer and it was excellent. My friend got a raspberry beer (can't remember the name) and she really liked it. If you are looking for gluten free beer they have about five to choose from, which is five more than I would have expected. Normally I don't get appetizers at restaurants, but I'd heard the smoked paprika popcorn is quite good. At $4 my friend and I both agreed it's probably the cheapest appetizer we've ever had. You don't get a ton of popcorn, but we were only able to eat about half. The popcorn is a bit sweet, almost like kettle corn, and the paprika adds a nice spice. They bring the popcorn out with a lime wedge. Would have never thought to squeeze a lime on popcorn, but it works really well with the sweet/spicy combo. I might have to try to figure out how to make this at home. The main course my friend and I both got the lamb burger, she got fries (which she said were quite good), and I got the curried veggie soup (which was also good). The lamb burger is probably the best burger I've had in a long while. I don't eat a lot of lamb (maybe once or twice a year, if even that), but I didn't find it had a lamb taste to it. It just tasted like a really good burger that's served with lettuce, tomato, pickles caramelized onions and goat cheese on a brioche bun. I love goat cheese. Why doesn't anyone else put goat cheese on their burgers, it's so good. Only downside is the burger is quite messy, but who cares. It's delicious. This burger will be haunting my dreams again tonight. read more

Last time I was at Sugarbowl I really enjoyed the food, so I made it a vow to return... and ordered the exact same dishes I had, hahaha. I have been craving for the wild salmon linguine since I've had it! Wild Sockeye Salmon Linguine - $14 shallot, garlic cream sauce, parmesan This is one of the best pasta dishes, ever. You get such a hearty portion of everything and the cream sauce is just flavored spot on! The pasta, although not handmade (can you even get handmade pasta at that price?), is perfectly cooked to al dente. The sauce is creamy but not heavy, and not too strong on the garlic. The salmon is cooked just right and not dry at all. Oh man, I'm thinking about how tasty this is as I'm typing up my post. I should've gotten a few orders to go and stock them in my freezer! Chicken & Waffle - $14 buttermilk, spice marinated chicken breast, waffle, maple butter Sadly, I was not wow'ed by this. I know it's been two years since I've had it, but I'm so sure they changed the recipe for the chicken. It just did not taste the same and I didn't really want to eat it anymore after the first bite. I'm not saying it wasn't good but I didn't like the spice they used. The waffles were also a bit hard. Cinnamon Bun - $4.25 Every single table had at least one order of this (to stay or to go) so I decided to try it out. It was soft, pillowy, and not very sweet. Definitely much better than the ones at the mall! 2 Eggs Any Style - $8 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes, toast Simple breakfast for my son. My favorite part was actually the potatoes - they were seasoned very nicely and cooked just to the right doneness! The restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere and is very family friendly. It was pretty busy on the day we went and at around 11:00am, most people were still enjoying breakfast. I made sure we got there around 10:45am just so we could get the lunch items as the lunch menu starts at 11:00am! I'm sad that I didn't like the chicken and waffles this time, but I will definitely return again (and again) for that pasta! read more
