This place is forever packed, for obvious reasons. The food is good, the drink menu is vast and the staff are usually friendly. I've had the opportunity to pop in twice in the last month. As the lamb burger was so tasty the first time, I opted for it again the second and was not disappointed at all. I'm now trapped in one of those silly conundrums where I want to try the whole menu but I just love this dang burger so much! Pair that with the sweet potato fries (but ask for light seasoning as I find them too salty otherwise), and you're set for a great dining adventure. The Hubba Hubby tried the chicken and waffles, which I've heard so much about. He was a fan while I just can't imagine eating waffles in the afternoon (I'm not a breakfast fan to begin with). At 2pm on a Friday it was surprisingly busy. I find it busy every time I go, which is a sign that it is awesome. It unfortunately means that most often it gets pretty loud with excitement and energy of friends connecting, but if you can sit on the patio during the summer, the volume is easily manageable. I find that some staff are amazing while some are a little less enthused but in general, they keep the ice water coming and the food is at your table before you've even had a chance to wonder how long it will take. Fast food always (I've found). Of course, you can't talk about SugarBowl without talking about their beer selection. What a great place for a weekend morning breakfast! If you get there early enough you can find parking right out front. The servers are always pleased to see you and great you with a smile. My go-to breakfast place especially when out-of-towners visit. Many people start off their meal with an appetizing cinnamon bun; it could be a smart idea simply because it might take a while for you to get your food due to the volume of diners. I've been in love with the heuvos rancheros dish since the first time I sampled it off my friend's plate and have ordered it many times since. The few other times, it was chicken and waffles and eggs benny. WOW, the C&W is one of the most savouring and filling things you can get. The eggs benny is so so, perhaps because the corn bread didn't really do anything for me. All their dishes are reasonably priced, around $12-14 for most of the bigger brunch items. Check the specials board as well! One thing I am surprised by is that, given their extensive alcohol selection, they have a rather sad non-alcoholic variety. Juice is pretty much Everfresh juice from costco or something like that. It just seems kind of generic when you compare to all the stuff they have for beers and breakfast. (Great combination, amiright?) Some other minor things to note: Saturday mornings are obviously busy; there's a guy (or girl) at the front entrance with a notepad taking names (usually) so you can just hang around until they call you. The wait isn't too long even though it seems extremely busy. For parking, if 88th ave is not looking too great, it might even be a better idea to make use of the free parking east of 109 street (by 87 avenue or so) because there are more free/non-metered spots there. read more

And while its atmosphere is more of a cafe than a bar, the focus on beer, complete with a not-too-common selection of imports on its rotating taps. There's very little pretense, and the curved bar is beautiful. The quality of food varies. The caramelized onions, soft, yet mild goat cheese, and grainy mustard provided good flavour accompaniments. My friend enjoyed his not-terribly-authentic Laksa, though mostly because of the quality and preparation of the prawns, not because of the curry flavour (which is attuned more to the tastes of Albertans than Malaysians). And Sarah found her baked macaroni and cheese to be one-note - lots of gooey cheese goodness, but not much else. Vegetarian options are fairly limited on the menu, but the menu also indicates that the kitchen is open to modifying dishes for food sensitivities and the like. But the beer was awesome, and even served in the proper glasses, which is always fun. The Sugar Bowl is one of the best coffee shops in the city. It's a great place just to relax, hang out, or have great conversations with friends. The atmosphere is very cozy, yet trendy. I love the hardwood floors and the aged tables and chairs. When it's nice out, you can sit outside and enjoy the air. I don't really drink alcohol, but Sugar Bowl is licensed, and I know you can get some good ales and other International drinks. Personally, I like to get the Italian soda. The menu is awesome, because it is very healthy, and there are many vegetarian items. Last time I was here, I had a veggie wrap with humus for lunch; it was very good. They also serve breakfast and dinner, and there are specials every day too. In the evening, this place can get very packed, especially on the weekend, so you'll want to show up early, if you want to get a table. It can also get very loud, and it will sound like you're in a pub, so if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere in the evenings, you might want to head elsewhere. read more

Not enough mention has been made of the amazing beer selection! I have not seen a better list anywhere in the city. If you've visited enough times that you've tried all or close to all they have to offer, do not fear, there are unlisted offerings. One of my current off-list faves: Red Racer. We came here for Saturday morning brunch with a group of 4 and waited about 20 minutes for a table -- not bad. It was everyone's first time at Sugarbowl but I knew it had been on The Food Network's "You Gotta Eat Here!" Sugarbowl is tucked away just off 109 Street which is nice because it's far enough away from traffic that gives it a neighbourly feel. This isn't too common in Edmonton since most places are in a big box strip mall or right on the main street such as Whyte Avenue. Although it's still winter (actually, my calendar says Spring but you know Edmonton...) I can definitely tell the patio would be awesome during the long summer days and nights. I'm not a huge brunch person and was disappointed that they didn't offer lunch. This was a bit disappointing because the brunch menu is relatively small. If they aren't going to offer lunch on the weekends, might as well expand the brunch menu. I ended up with the Chicken and Waffles. I've had Chicken and Waffles before and it's just OK. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the chicken came and it was tender, moist and perfectly seasoned. The TV show did say the chicken is marinated over night... and then drenched in maple butter. Everything else looked pretty good including two Sugarbowl Bennies and a Brunch Special at my table and so I have no complaints. Service was attentive for a packed restaurant on the weekend. I've read here that service is slow but I think it was just fine. This place would get 4 stars in my book but the fact that I couldn't get lunch and had just a small brunch menu to work with, I'll take off half a star. Yes, this place is always busy but I don't really have a problem waiting for a seat. The Sugar Bowl brings a whole rush of feelings. Very quickly: food isn't as good as people hype it to be, beer selection is top class, and staff is almost always great. Contrary to my previous comment, the red curry seafood linguine tastes like a fresh suntan. It is a delightful dish. The part you care about, the beer selection is like a big library. There's tons of things that I love or will love but also beers that make me cringe, new experiences are good things, I guess. Lately though, they've been out of my favorites. Try the Erdinger Dunkel, La Fin du Monde (carefully), and the Baron. This is one of my favorite places in Edmonton whether I need to relax on the patio or wait out the rain. read more

As patio season approaches, definitely check out SugarBowl, one of Edmonton's finest. You can't go wrong with their wide beer selection and solid food options. Go early to avoid long waits and try to get an outdoor seat when the weather is nice. Some of my favorites include: Cinnamon Buns ($4.25) - MUST try. Usually sold-out by 11am, these beautiful creations are to this day, the best cinnamon buns I've ever had. Just one will usually fill you for breakfast, but pairs nicely with a cup of coffee or side of fruit. I usually buy at least 2 others to-go. SugarBowl Benny ($13) - Awesome brunch choice. Love the moist, grilled corn bread they use as a base for their Bennies. The hollandaise sauce is also of a lighter variety that rounds off the dish well.. Better than most Bennies out there. Lamb Burger ($14) - A crazily juicy, delicious burger that will leave you craving for more. Absolutely love the goat cheese spread with the caramelized onions. This burger will satisfy your burger cravings. Chicken & Waffle ($14) - If you're ready to eat 10x your intake of butter, you must try this SugarBowl classic. Waited in line only to be told they don't allow dogs on the patio. The patio is completely open with zero barriers and a lot of space for dogs to not be in the way and it's winter so it's not busy on the patio (there were also only 6 or 8 tables so this is not a crazy busy patio). I have not been to a patio in Edmonton that didn't allow dogs, some have barriers that the dogs have to stay outside of, but that is totally fine. I understand asking poorly behaved dogs to leave, but if you walk for an hour to go somewhere it seems only reasonable that you and your dogs could sit outside without disturbing anyone. Host was extremely rude and did not provide a rationale for their decision that dogs are not allowed. I will not be supporting this business again if this is how they treat dog owners. Would recommend Dogpatch or Little Brick as a dog-friendly brunch alternative. read more

It was a generous serving and it satisfied my sweet tooth, but the components (the French toast, blueberry topping and whipped cream) tasted pretty average. Often come here before/after a show at the Metro, or in the past, to study. Sometimes I've come by myself (to study) or with others (before/after a show). The place can get really busy and noisy at times, and my group and I have occasionally had to go elsewhere because we could not get seating in the packed place and were told that the wait would be something like 45 minutes. But I guess that's gonna happen when a place is a staple of a neighbourhood, which Sugarbowl totally is. My first yelp review and its a home run, lamb and goat cheese burger was simply amazing, jerk chicken burger was perfectly seasoned and cooked, even the sides, maple vinaigrette salad and Tomato and black bean soup, were just simple, clean, and fresh flavours, and finally (backwards review) the Poutine with bbq pulled pork was a prefect start to the meal! I want to go back already tonight and try something else. The only bad and it honestly can't be considered that bad for a Friday evening... is the wait was a little long and the lobby area is almost non existent, but something that I am probably more critical about than even the food, but it can make up for a long wait... the service, was very pleasant, welcoming, and attentive, again...perfect!!! As a new graduate, I can tell you Sugarbowl had been my staple over the duration of my degree. I haven't had a meal here, breakfast, lunch or dinner here I wasn't satisfied with. My favorite dish is their bison chili and corn bread, but at some point in their lives everyone needs to try their chicken and waffles. This in conjunction with their wide array of local brews (which they start serving at 10am, beer and bacon life doesn't get better than that), you can have the full taste experience at Sugarbowl. Have been here a few times for both brunch and dinner, the only bad thing I'd say is that they don't take reservations so first come first served but it means you could be waiting over an hour for a table. If that's your scene, then your in the absolute right place to look like you're writing the great Canadian novel or hang out inside with your Raybans half-way down your nose. Wear black. That's the vibe; it's not oppressive or really off-putting, but that's the vibe. It's also a bar, a coffee shop and a bistro, and respectively, it's got a strong beer selection (lots of premiums and micros with the usual suspects on tap), a nice strong brew - barista pressed and a quirky but tasty menu (lamb burger, baby). It's not the only place to have a beer or a coffee or a bite in the area. No by no means, is there a shortage of suds, beans or ciabatta in Garneau, but this place has atmosphere, vibe, kick and often tunes. Oh my Sugar Bowl, how you have forsaken me. This used to be my favorite watering hole until I went after a 2 month hiatus last night. The vibe, food and service are still good but my gripe is with the beer. I understand that everyone needs to make money, but the ridiculous prices they now charge for their beer's on the board is just gauging. A goblet of Seattle Pike IPA (12oz) is now 8.50. 3 months ago I had a pint there (20oz) for 6. Wild Rose, a local brewery goes for 7.50 on tap now. Time to find a new spot. read more

Sugar Bowl is a common name among students. I've heard it for so long but I never ventured there until recently. It's a very popular place to go to for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The Sugar Bowl is very small, but it's nice as it creates as cozy environment. This is the place to go to sit, socialize, and relax at the same time. I found this location great for brunch- I recommend their goat cheese and ham omlette. The goat cheese was never overwhelming, and their prices were reasonable. Of coarse, as the name suggests, they have great desserts. Their bread pudding was devoured in seconds, and the sugar(bowl) pie did not last much longer either. I can see why this establishment has such a positive reputation. They did not disappoint. Keep in mind though, there is not a lot of seating space, so you may be waiting for a while during the weekends. read more

I was showing my supervisor's new student around town, and I wanted to show her we weren't totally lame before she makes her mind up to move here. Enter SugarBowl. I actually really like SugarBowl, but I have terrible luck at getting a table. It doesn't matter what day of the week, what time of day, winter or summer--it just never happens. I am defeated, so I only go when I'm invited and someone else is responsible for scoring a table. I know it's not SugarBowl's fault, and if they somehow magically expanded the restaurant, they wouldn't be nearly as charming. Besides, I'm sure nobody down there's complaining that there's never an open seat in the house. Thankfully, as of last week I've discovered a new tactic, which is to send down a vanguard who will secure our seating arrangements. The friends who arrived early somehow managed to get a table at 4 in the afternoon, an impossibility in my experience. Beer and popcorn were ordered and delivered in short order. I always go for the Fruli on tap here, and I usually gorge on popcorn to the extent that I don't feel like eating dinner afterwards. But the meals I've had here in the past were wonderful, and maybe one of these days I won't be so close to gnawing off my own arm that I just go somewhere else. read more

Now, I will come right out and admit, that I haven't been to Sugar Bowl any other time than in the morning. "Why would he only go to Sugar Bowl in the morning?", you ask? It's simple... Sugar Bowl has the BEST (and I mean BEST!!!) cinnamon buns I've ever eaten. There is something about these doughy monsters that is truly magical. The dough is soft and well, doughy (which is a huge plus) and the cinnamon/sugar mixture is spot on. I'm convinced, also, that the baker sprinkles the top with a little salt that adds a whole new dimension to these buns. They are a perfect size for breakfast (at least for me) and are really reasonably-priced. At this point, I have to sheepishly say that I've not tried anything else at the establishment (perhaps it's time to do that). I will say that the interior is nicely decorated and has a cafe/pub feel to it. And, while glancing around during my last visit, I noticed a pretty hefty selection of beers on tap (a definite plus). So, if you are looking for THE BEST cinnamon bun in the Edmonton area, you MUST go to Sugar Bowl, hands down... no don't ask questions, just go. The place is always packed and I often wish I could make a reservation but if you can get a table it's still one of my favorites. Great selection of beers and a fun vibe. I like coming for breakfast, mostly because of the corn bread Benny. I also really like the local artists featured on the walls. There's a reason this is a bit of an institution in garneau. I came here with a couple of girlfriends and we had the Mac N' Cheese, Chicken & Waffle, Smoked Farmers Sausage, Bison Chili, Cheesecake, Bread Pudding and Banana Cream Pie. Nothing really stood out to me but I did like the Chicken & Waffle the best out of the four main dishes. I've had better since, however :-D Both the cheesecake and bread pudding were yummy desserts. This is a great cozy place to check out either for lunch or dinner. I love the wood flooring and no-fuss furniture that makes this casual place all the more inviting. I had the jerk chicken and avocado burger (scrumptious!) and my boyfriend had the baked mac and cheese. Its the perfect place for comfort food. other than the tables being too close together, I recommend this place to grab a bite. it can however get loud, so I don't suggest going there if you plan to carry extensive conversation. read more

I like coming here. I've never had a bad experience but only once was it a great one. Almost everytime I order the pulled pork and its different each and everytime. There's no consistency of flavor or, portion size of the pork itself. I've never had one I didnt really like but it would be nice to have a set recipe and portion. I get the soup EVERY time I go in but, not once has it been hot. It's always luke warm which is wierd since the kitchen is no more than a 10 second walk anywhere in the restuarant. After spending nine years at the U of A, I feel like I cheated myself out of something great by walking by this place so many times and only going for a meal after I was done school. As someone who generally eat out at chain restaurants more than local eateries, I was completely delighted by the food and atmosphere at the SugarBowl. I had seen SugarBowl featured on the Food Network's "You Gotta Eat Here!" so when I was out and about on a Sunday afternoon looking for food with my fiancee and a friend, we decided to try it out. They serve brunch until 3 pm, and lucky for us, we showed up a few minutes after 3:00 looking for lunch fare. We waited about 10 minutes for a table and were seated in a back corner by the washroom. Our waitress was great; attentive and friendly, and I felt we were well taken care of for the whole meal. The people were mostly university aged, and there was a nice independent, artistic vibe to the restaurant. I ordered the soup of the day, a cream of potato with corn and ham in it. Holy cow - I can't even remember the last time I've had a soup that good! The bowl was $5 so I ordered some hummus and pita to go with it. The soup bowl came with toast and was huge and I had to get help finishing my hummus. My fiancee ordered the baked macaroni and cheese and my friend ordered the chicken and waffles. All three of us cleaned our plates. The beer menu is extensive and I wish I had been in the mood for beer when we visited. I can't wait to return! read more

This restaurant reeks of hipster, in a great way. You feel hipster by osmosis.. everything that you're wearing, instead of looking cheap and gaudy, will look hipster and intentional under the great lighting's warm tones. Thus, come here for impromptu dates that catch you off guard! I love their vegetarian burger, the Portobello Mushroom burger. It comes with yam fries and is heaven on a plate, really. Their Wild Salmon Linguine is excellent when you want a plate that is a little lighter on the palate. Both dishes, however, are quite heavy as they are heavily doused in creams. Their lamb burger tempts me to .. pause.. my vegetarianism, and that's rare. It looks heavenly. Their cinnamon bun is truly a thing of glory. Always get it warmed up and butter liberally. I think the gentle snowfall and white landscape is what added charm to this semi hipster yet cottage like place. The wood furnishings, close up rock concert photos adorned on the wall, open kitchen and well stocked bar was perfectly cute and cozy. You know, the type of place you want to spend the afternoon away in. What came highly suggested and something I always have to order, when I see it on a menu, is the chicken and waffles. The waffles were divine. Slightly crisp upon biting, the batter was nice and sweet and the inside warm and fluffy. The maple butter, a bit dense and sweet but a fork drizzle amount, was tasty. The chicken.. ahh the chicken. I wanted it to be good, I wanted to love it, and it wasn't bad but just not quite there. The batter was quite scarce on the chicken breast, and I'm a firm believer that chicken and waffles should always have either the whole chicken or at least the legs. It was also a bit dry. I was also unsure what to do with the vegetables, as putting maple butter on a spring mix salad would be dense and awkward.. and I wouldn't really pair it with the waffles. Now the lamb burger, that was something else. Flavorful, not too gamey (although we like that) and perfectly cooked. I didn't eat the bun, but tasted the patty.
