Hostess fail level 100 (Christina): told the wait was 30 to 40 minutes so we went for a coffee and returned at earlier than 30 and was told, by said hostess, that she had given our table away and asked us to wait outside in -15 weather! Shortly after this, she comes outside to tell us that there's room at the bar and before we could answer she gave the seats away!! Prior to that I inquired if we sat at the bar, could we move to a table when one opened. Her reply "not on Sunday". Even after she had us wait outside AND gave our original table away! The food was outstanding. We're so glad we stopped here for breakfast before we flew back. I had the breakfast sandwich that was rich and had unique flavors. Hubby had the eggs Benny which he devoured. My 3 year old (who is super picky) loved the HUGE cinnamon roll. Parking was a little difficult and it isn't very obvious to find. Great gosh ALMIGHTY! The meal that I had here was one of the best brunches I've ever had ... ever! EVER! Not the most accessible location (unless of course you are walking down from your dorm), but not too hard to find. This gem of a joint serves up some wicked food in an appealing wood-and-brick kind of environment. The beer selection is fantastic too. I only wish I could have had the opportunity to sample some, although I figured a sleepy Sunday afternoon (right before a long drive back to Calgary) might not be the best time to start unleashing the amber-eyed dragon. But the brunch? Pure. Bliss. Tried both the Chicken and Waffles (with a side of Maple Butter that if I could get my hands on an endless supply, I might consider trading my first born) and the Sugarbowl Benny (poached egg atop back bacon and cornbread, smothered in thyme-hollandaise with a side of potatoes). It is hard to describe how much enjoyment I got out of the meal except to say that most of my conversation consisted of saying "wow" after nearly every bite. Oh yeah, they also have house made ketchup (which had a flavor so familiar that I couldn't put my finger on it, and the servers were either uncertain about or sworn to SugarBowl secrecy) and good coffee ... although I forgot that quickly once the food came out and blew my mind. I can definitely see how the Sugar Bowl is such a popular place with the campus crowd in the area. It's cozy and laid-back with late hours and a menu full of delicious comfort food. My friends and I stopped in for some late night dessert and drinks, as we heard the cinnamon buns here are some of the best in town. While we didn't see them on the menu (maybe only in the morning?), there was plenty else to order. Not very hungry, we ordered the smoked paprika popcorn and charcuterie platter to share. It's the perfect combination to share among a small group of friends for a late night snacking get-together. Simple and totally share-able :) We were also able to order drinks not on the menu. It was a very cold night and all I wanted was a hot chocolate (with a shot of Bailey's, of course). Our waitress was cheerful and friendly. It was nice just to unwind and sit, chatting with friends and listen to the DJ play classics from our era in the background. Can't wait to come back for the rest of the menu! read more

Because SugarBowl. You need to get here early (if you're coming for breakfast) as this place fills up quickly. Trendy and eclectic, this place is a gem in the Garneau/University area. In the summer, a beer/drink on the patio is a great way to spend an evening. It can get quite busy though, so you may have to wait. It's worth it though! Tons of worldy beers and excellent food. We came here after a late night of reno's and not feeling the great urge to cook (lazy us) but sooo glad we chose this little Edmonton jewel to perch for a little while. It was pretty packed with the university crowd when we got inside, but luckily spotted a table near the window and got asked immediatly what we'd like to drink. This would be a good time to mention that this place has every type of GOOD beer and cider imaginable, with the glass to match it too! Anyways, we got a Bolmers cider and a Fruli and then scoped our sights on the paprika popcorn. So good. For meals, they have a pretty good selection, and my partner got the ol' fashioned Mac&Cheese and I tried the Red Curry Seafood Laksa. Both came in gigantic portions (Left overs for lunch!) If you like a good (not too much-but perfect) kick to your food, then I highly recommend it. ^__^ Before I bored you to tears, it was all in all a great night out, and I'll be back soon enough to try desserts! I visited Sugar Bowl last weekend for dinner with my husband and a girlfriend. The last time I had been there was about 9 years ago, when it was more of a coffee shop, less of a restaurant place. I used to while the days away at a table outside, drink coffee and play chess with a friend . Those were the days. All three of us were quite happy with our experience. We went on Friday night at 6pm. It was very busy, but we only had to wait about 2 minutes for a table. I did notice later on that there were more people waiting a little bit for a table. Our waiter was a nice young guy, no problems with the service at all. He was friendly and timely, but not overbearing at all. The beer list is amazing, and it makes me very happy that they carry one of my favourites, Desperados. Another perk about the beer list is that the prices are reasonable. They don't gauge people for the rarities, but charge appropriately for them. I ordered the paprika and lime popcorn ($4) to start off with, which my companions thought was hilarious and strange. They tried to convince me not to, but once it arrived they changed their tune. I never knew popcorn could be so tasty, and I will definitely be trying this combo at home. For my main I had the lamb burger, my husband had a red Thai curry dish (only $13!) and my friend had some kind of creamy pasta with salmon (for some reason the online menu isn't listing these two things, so I can't remember exactly what they were called). The goat cheese on my burger was friggin' delicious, and the salad that came with it was fresh and yum. My husband's curry was excellent, lots of veggies and big shrimp. I will be ordering that the next time I go. My friend liked her pasta as well. The ONLY thing I didn't like about this place was that the music was way too loud for dinnertime. I get that it's a hip place, near the university and all that jazz. I wanna jam as much as the next person, but I had to continually raise my voice to talk to my friend across the table. It's fine for a bar, but I thought it wasn't quite appropriate for dinner time. We were there for about two hours, and they did seem to turn the music down later into our visit, so I don't really know if it's always loud like that or what. Also, the ladies' bathroom was extremely freezing cold! I should also add that there is mostly only street parking, which can be very hard to find. You might have to drive around the block a few times. There is a dentist office across the street that you can park at once the office is closed for the night. Overall, great beer list, really good food, good atmosphere and impressive pricing. I'll be going to Sugar Bowl more often. read more

Every item I have ever had is absolutely delectable! Breakfast is scrumptious - my favorites are the French toast and, of course, the amazing, enormous cinnamon buns. Lunch/afternoon drinks are wonderful sitting on the patio. I cannot rave about the selection of alcoholic beverages enough - I think the list is twice as long as the actual menu. Evening has its own unique ambiance that is only created with the right clientele, in the right neighborhood, and a touch of magic. I will not say too much because this is a place that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated. This is an absolute MUST to go to and remains on my elite list of 5 star establishments. PS. The Sugar Bowl is probably one of my favorite pub/restaurants in the University area. I have never had a bad meal and I love the casual/trendy atmosphere. The cinnamon buns are definitely a must for breakfast, probably the best I have had! Even anything I have tried off the dinner menu has been great, the Mac & Cheese is delicious although very very filling and if you're not super hungry you can easily share this dish. Also one of my faves is the portobello mushroom burger, so yummy although a little messy but then good burgers (note: the mushroom is the patty, no meat) usually are! As a huge beer fan this place has an amazing selection, it's hard not to branch out from the familiar and sample some interesting beers from around the world. The only reason I give this place 3 stars was service, although my previous visits have had great service this last visit was brutal. Maybe we shouldn't have sat outside but the inside was full and there were others outside so it really isn't a good reason for taking 25min to take our drink orders and the server didn't seem to care that we had been waiting so long. Plus my hot chocolate and bailey's came w/o the baileys, she did bring me a another one but at the end of the meal I was pretty full and usually one hot chocolate is more than for me. To be honest we were very close to leaving as we could see our server inside visiting with other people/staff and we were outside starving. Hopefully this doesn't happen again as I really do like this place but it's hard to want to go back when service sucks. read more

Once upon a time I lived in Edmonton... mere blocks from SugarBowl in fact, and I had never ever been! Was it even there then? My memory wants to say yes. At any rate, I've been told it used to be much more coffee shop-esque. Now, it's much more beer-esque. I opened up the menu and for a moment I thought I had the beer menu in hand. I was about to ask for the food menu when... I looked on the inside left cover. What did I see? The food menu. Yep. Beer takes up most of the interior. Impressive! At that though, I didn't have a beer. There was a trip back to Calgary looming after my meal, so I thought better of it. What I did have was the Jerk Chicken and Avocado Burger. When they say it's a spiced chicken breast, holy toledo, they weren't kidding! I'm not the *WORLD'S* biggest wuss when it comes to spices, but I wouldn't say I'd win any spice eating contest either. At any rate, my mouth was on fii-ah! But I'd so totally eat that again. SugarBowl, I approve. You're full of yelpiness. I'll see you again next time I'm in town. We'll have a beer! read more

I was wondering why this restaurant is so popular among the UofA students. Pulled pork sandwich is awesome. Other plates are overall very good. But I think in general their menu is slightly over priced. Also it is quite noisy inside the restaurant. Patio is great, but I don't enjoy sitting inside because of the noise. read more

It use to be my favorite place for a pint. However, these days it is really hard to find a seat and I don't like to wait for 20 minutes to have a drink. Probably the best place for drinking beer in Edmonton. The food is okay nothing special. I recommend the popcorn. It is very different compared to typical popcorn. read more

Definitely one of my favourite spots around campus. It always feels nice and cozy in here. Their selection of beer is incredible and they always have fancy specials on tap as well. Having heard great things about SugarBowl, I stopped by around lunchtime on a weekday with a colleague in the summer. We weren't right in the middle of the lunch rush, but to my surprise there was a line outside and both the patio and the inside were packed. After standing at the entrance for a few minutes, someone came by and said they'd try to find us a table for 2. We waited about 10-15 minutes and a table on the patio freed up. The waitress cleared the table and told us to go have a seat. We weaved our way through the over-crowded patio and squeezed into our seats and sat for about 10-15 minutes, while the table beside us got half their food and were told the rest of their food would be out "shortly" - they were fairly vocal that they had been waiting far too long already. This was not a good sign. By the 20-minute mark of sitting, we hadn't received any menus or been offered a drink despite being out on the patio on one of the hottest days of the summer. There wasn't a server anywhere around to flag down, so we decided to leave and go elsewhere. While I was assured by my colleague that this was not the typical SugarBowl experience, it definitely left a poor impression. I have received poor service at places before but I think this was the first time I received absolutely no service. Had I been looking only for somewhere to sit unattended and uncomfortable, I'm sure the sidewalk would have been just as good, and probably even more indie/hipster. read more

This first time I came to the Sugar Bowl I was utterly underwhelmed. I went again recently with a few friends though, and the food was much better. My boyfriend got a whisky sour and I got a soho citrus, and they were good and really prompt. For food, he ordered the lamb and goat cheese burger which was average, but the fries were really great - crispy and seasoned well. I had the smoked salmon linguine, and it was just so delicious. We both really enjoyed it. My other friend had the creme brulee for dessert and it was pretty tasty as well (funny story: boyfriend thought you were supposed to take the sugar off to eat the 'creme'). Although I enjoyed the trendy atmosphere and quick service, I really couldn't bear the long wait, and I hated how loud the music was, especially with all the chatter. Next time I'm going to try the smoked paprika popcorn! read more

Definitely one of my favourite spots in Edmonton! The location: Ideally located in the university area, with a beautiful, yet a bit small, patio. The food: The menu doesn't have a lot of offerings, but whatever they offer is really tasty. They make a killer Chicken and Waffles, and a banana pie if you still have some room left. The drinks: A hidden gem when it comes to beer. The beer menu is simply amazing with over 150 beers. Bottom line, SugarBowl is my regular spot for a bite and beer. You'll be surprised if you order eats, that the food is generous and yummy. A friend of mine wanted to go for a beer, and suggested this place. Since she had me at "beer", I didn't much care where we went. I hate to use a cliche, but this place was Beer Heaven. The sheer number of choices left me looking like a slack jawed yokel, and I'm not usually the type to be easily impressed. The food was fairly decent, too. I tried the pulled pork sandwich, which was drenched in BBQ sauce, and came with a side of sweet potato fries that were so good, I would kill a man for a plate of them. The only issue I had with the meal was that the sandwich (served on a giant kaiser bun) was a little too messy to be eaten with your hands. Think sloppy joe, and you'll know what I mean. Service was ok, waitress seemed a little ditzy, and she never did bring me the knife and fork I asked for in order to eat the aforementioned messy sandwich. Parking is a pain in the ass, too. In the summer, it's nice to take a stroll in the area in order to get to this spot, but I doubt I would do the same in winter. read more

Sugar Bowl has a somewhat impressive beer list; somewhat less impressive is that the first three beers I tried to order were unavailable. At least the waitress knew of the unavailability and was able to give me the bad news right away. I tried to order 3 similar beers so it would have been nice if the waitress had proffered a recommendation. Anyhow, I was able to find a more than acceptable beer and, not being a big baby, had a great time. I had the bacon beer (aka Shakespeare Stout) and it complimented the mac and cheese well. What a wonderful late night snack. The cheese used is smoked and delicious. Sugar Bowl has a chiller atmosphere than other bars nearby. Proximity to a campus probably does that. I'll definitely be back to try some more beers and sample more of Sugar Bowl's food. read more

One of my favorite places in Edmonton. Particularly nice in summer when they open the place up and let the fresh air in and also have tables on the patio. My favorite feature is the beer menu combined with their happy hour before 7 pm. They usually offer my favorite beer (Erdinger), which they have on tap(!), at a very good price during happy hour. Now that I think about it, I should go there for a pint of Erdinger more often. Especially now that they have the Weiss bier on tap!! Mmm...! They have pretty good food too. I don't love every item on the menu, but there is always something that is good. The other day I had a lovely salad with goat cheese and smoked salmon. What I really wanted was a burger with fries, but since I had been eating out several nights in a row, I decided to be sensible and have a salad. Interestingly, I forgot about my burger-and-fries craving as soon as I started on the salad. It was really tasty! Nice staff too, always friendly and helpful. Only problem is that I'm not the only one who like the place so there is often a bit of a wait to get a table. It's worth it though! read more

The Sugarbowl is a definite staple in Garneau. In terms of food, it does well. I usually go for breakfast/brunch. The Benny is decent. The cinnamon buns are tasty. However, the prices are high. The service isn't the greatest and most times aloof. The lineups here are awful so it's best to go early. The front entrance is a bit confusing, but you line up outside the restaurant to be seated. I would recommend you visit at least once if you are Edmonton, but there are a lot of options very close-by. Doesn't make me want to leave my place to go visit here though. read more

The Sugarbowl has one of the best beer selections in Edmonton. This place is always bustling, so if you want to get a table with a large group of people (4 or more), get there earlier than peak hours or be prepared to wait a bit. If you're there for supper, grab yourself a beer. Once you've settled on a beer, check out their food menu, which has some good variety to it. One of my favorites there is the Baked Mac & Cheese. Oh, and this is one of the only restaurants in Edmonton that I know of that has chicken and waffles on its menu consistently. If it's a lovely summer's evening, Sugarbowl has a terrific patio, ideal for people watching, or relaxing under the hot sun. And if you're there for breakfast, make sure you try their cinnamon buns. Sugar Bowl is one of my favorite Edmonton hang-outs. It's got great music, local art work and fantastic serving staff I usually stop by on Sunday morning for brunch (love their Huervos Rancheros), as their cinnamon buns are nothing short of legendary. However, if you're going to do this I recommend going in early, or you will be waiting in line. Sugar Bowl is also great for late evening eats... Their beer menu is phenomenal and let me personally recommend the Frulii Margarita, best idea EVER. In short, Sugar Bowl is perfect for all times of the day. My favorite brunch restaurant in Edmonton, hands down. The menu for brunch is quite small but you can't make a bad choice. They also have daily specials that are very good. A lot of people talk about the cinnamon buns but I never have room to eat one after the delicious meal I have just had! Personally I recommend either the Sugar Bowl Benny or the Huevos Rancheros for some great brunch meals at a reasonable price. The Sugar Bowl always fills up, so make sure you have some time to wait in line. This place is the other end of the spectrum from Cora or Humpty's and that is a good, good thing. Everything is fresh and made on site. When you come in, a wonderful aroma of cinnamon buns and coffee greets you and sets the stage for a great breakfast or brunch. The cinnamon buns are legendary and actually live up to the hype. The coffee is great and is often refreshed during your meal to keep it hot. The breakfast options are numerous enough to satisfy most of us and there are usually a few specials making use of what is found at the market that week. If there are enchiladas on offer, have them. The staff are usually really fun and just the right amount of friendly. And I love that the art rotates to show off local painters or photographers. Only real issue is parking. BEWARE, read the signs on the street, about 25 feet from their door is regulated neighbourhood parking and you will be ticketed. read more

A perennial favourite with the university crowd, this hip and happening restaurant and bar is always packed to the gills yet manages to put out consistently great food and service. I've walked in here for an early dinner with a dozen people and not even had the staff bat an eyelash as we kept them busy by ordering more and more dishes and drinks over the course of two hours. The incredibly juicy and flavourful lamb burger with goats cheese is my favourite dinner here, while the sweet potato fries and cornbread are must-have additions to either your dinner or breakfast. Don't forget to check out the drinks menu: Sugar Bowl has a wide selection of delicious and exotic beers, martinis and other mixed drinks. There's even a selection of socially acceptable daytime drinks for those who feel like washing down their omelet or cinnamon bun brunch with sangria or a mimosa. My only complaint with the place is that the juice is bottled Everfresh junk and there aren't many coffees available. I'd also avoid the place on a Sunday morning, as the quality of the food isn't so good that day as the rest of the week (different chef perhaps?). overall, however, SugarBowl is a consistent and satisfying favourite that's a great place to hang out with friends if you don't mind some noise! So as Carolina was in town, we wanted to go out for breakfast. Remember it's the most important meal of the day. Originally we were going to head to Highlevel Diner but since their breakfast ended at 11, we picked Sugar Bowl. The atmosphere was a mix of young and old and reminded me of the U of T crowd at the Annex - very eclectic and artsy fartsy. But I guess that's the south side/Whyte Avenue for you. But of course sitting beside us was a couple that seemed like they were on their first date. You can just tell. LOL So we ordered coffee and orange juice. I was a little disappointed with the Everfresh bottle. Carolina said her coffee wasn't too strong, but that's her Tim Hortons' taste.LOL. Then we ordered the Sugarbowl Benny and French Toast. She wasn't too fond of the corn bread with the eggs benedict and I didn't mind the french toast all that much. I ended up eating the remainder of her corn bread and some of her potatoes. The potatoes to me didn't seem too seasoned at all. My cinnamon french toast wasn't too shabby. But after seeing the size of the cinnamon buns, maybe we should have ordered those for breakfast and would've been satisfied. I could go back especially for their line of Euro brews, which are more along the lines of my taste or maybe just for their cinnamon bun. I just wasn't wowed by this place. read more

Since the restaurant opened in the 1940s, it has changed its style (and ownership) from a burger joint to an international-style cafe. They now offer an impressive selection of international beers and ciders, with import beverages from throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. The food menu is also surprising, with choices ranging from Bison Chili, to a Lamb and Goat Cheese Burger, to an Oyster Sauce Stir Fry, to Hoegaarden and Bacon Mussels. Random, but delicious. Don't forget their Cinnamon Buns, for which the restaurant is famous; you're lucky if they still have any left after the morning rush, though. One thing to note is that, while the Sugarbowl might be a fantastic spot to meet some friends, down some drinks, and share a few appies, it is not a good place to hold a business meeting (as we quickly discovered). Simply put, the place gets rowdy after work hours. And there's nothing wrong with that - just don't expect to be able to hold a meaningful conversation amidst the din! I might have been at a business meeting, but that isn't going to stop me from ordering a glass of malbec (Los Cardos - superbly smooth) and a charcuterie plate (the daily special). For $14, the charcuterie plate was a steal. Served with breadsticks and pickled nibbles, the plate offered salami, prosciutto, smoked cheddar, manchego, and a pepper havarti, with a side of olives. I chose not to share. I love going solo on a charcuterie plate in restaurants, and this one was particularly good (anything with prosciutto and manchego will always be good, in my opinion). The smoked cheddar was a nice surprise; if you've never tried it, pick some up from Paddy's or Everything Cheese - it's melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. On a previous visit to the Sugarbowl, I tried the Lamb and Goat Cheese burger, which I would strongly recommend to anyone looking for a heartier meal. Lamb and goat cheese are excellent when paired together, and the Sugarbowl does it perfectly without overpowering the taste of the meat. Give it a try the next time you're there. So, other than the noise, the Sugarbowl is a great place to unwind after a busy school/work day. Park yourself on their patio, pick up a Bulmers, and nibble on some Smoked Paprika Popcorn or a homemade, hard-to-find-after-the-morning-hours Cinnamon Bun. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it? read more

We went for an early afternoon lunch and were disappointed with the Sugar Benny (modified eggs benny on corn bread) and the Belgian waffle. Their menus are pretty small but everything I've tried (most of it) hasn't let me or members of my party down. These days I tend to lean my on favorite though, which is their lamb burger. In my opinion, one of the best burgers in the city. Especially if you like lamb and goats cheese. If you go for brunch go early or be prepared to wait. If you go early enough make sure you get one of their delicious cinnamon buns (and maybe one to go). Don't get upset by the crammed seating, it's one of the charms of the place. My only negative comment I have is that they have a large beer selection but I usually have to order 2-3 different beers before I find one that they aren't sold out of. read more

I had the best meal of my life here! It was a dark and cold winter night and my girlfriend and I had walked over half a km in the freezing cold. When we entered the Sugar Bowl it was so warm and inviting. I feel like there was a fireplace but maybe that is my imagination. We were seated immediately and we both ordered double Caesars, that were spiced perfectly. Then we both had the Lamb Burger. Juicy and hot and slathered with goat cheese...it was just perfect. 3.5 STARS I enjoyed my first experience at Sugar Bowl very much. Very lovely staff, nice table settings and oodles of natural light make this joint a fantastic neighbourhood gem and hangery. Very fresh and local ingredients send your senses to a satisfying setting. I enjoyed the artisan cheddar Mac & Cheese, with a side of cornbread. Carbolicious, yet not over-filling. This was my favorite hang out when I lived in Edmonton. Fantastic beer selection, relaxed and cool atmosphere, great food, and all for a decent price. I really loved the cinnamon buns (come early if you want to get one), the buffalo chili, espresso creme brulee, and the bread pudding. Pretty much everything on the menu is tasty. I've been here for breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee, dessert, dinner, drinks, all times of the day: it's one of the very very few places that make me homesick for Edmonton. read more

The Sugar Bowl is a University area staple. The place has a nice, energetic vibe, and is often packed. Most of the food was in my opinion average... nothing too out there or memorable on the dinner menu. Except... The Lamb Burger. Oh my, put this thing on your list of must try's. It's sooo juicy, and I swear it's got about a 60-40 ratio of meat to goat cheese. It's worth going if only for this burger. read more
