My wife and I stopped by Sugar Rush Café last Saturday morning, ready to be treated to the same awesome experiences that were shared by our fellow Yelpers. But from the moment we walked in we had that weird feeling that we should have opted for something more else....say IHOP?
The café is extremely tiny; I have to guess that the max guests that can be seated are roughly 20. This wouldn't have been such a problem, except we happen to arrive at exactly the same when there were roughly 30 guests, and more piling in. The hostess offered for us to seat on the sofas in their little lounge area (which could better be used for um, I don't know...more tables?). Ok, no problem, but in the meantime, could we order a cup of coffee while we waited? Sure, no problem, so we thought. The hostess forgot all about the coffee we ordered, that didn't arrive until after we seated.
As we were waiting for a table to open up, we noticed who I would have assumed to be one of the cooks (possibly the owner, he was wearing an apron) mosey on up to an empty table and have a seat. My initial reaction as a patron was sorta...what the hell, who's taking our table before us? We were here first! Until I realized who it possibly was, then it was no big deal. But at that point I think the guy kind of noticed my awkward glance as he sort of responded in giving me the stink eye (which ties into the gross part of my review later).
In any case, we finally get a table and wait almost 10 minutes for someone to come and take our order. I mean, give me a break, its not like we're ordering from a huge menu, there's only like 5 different breakfast items. We could have yelled our order to the cooks in the kitchen with no problems. We were getting ready to leave without ordering when the guy came over to take our order. He was very pleasant and apologetic at least.
We ordered the omelette and happy sunrise or something rather (their version of moons over my hammy). Both arrived smelling great and tasting even better. The hash browns were a buttery slice of heaven, and the coffee that eventually arrived 30 minutes later after we ordered it was a decent cup of Joe, although it should be for $4.00 a pop.
As my wife finished off the end of her omelette (she eats from her left to right), she stopped almost mid chew and gasped while looking at her plate. I looked over and there was this huge, gross, long black hair on her plate, right underneath the piece of omelette that she just scooped into her mouth. The ladies who were sitting next to us saw this as it happened and I'm sure they changed their minds about even thinking about ordering an omelette. I tore apart my breakfast sandwich to see if there was any bodily function that was spewed inside there. We were both like O...M....G, this could not be happening! The hair was so long and thick it could have been a horse hair, or the antennae off a super huge cockroach. Blech!
We waved the girl hostess down, she sees the hair on the plate and keeps on walking...I kinda don't blame her. Finally the guy hostess sees our distress, he comes over and I could see the look of disgust on his face as well. He totally handled the situation right, he offered to re-cook the food (which didn't help because we both pretty much had finished our plates by then), and he also offered to comp out entire meal. I was totally willing to pay for my food and the coffee, but ultimately the guy hostess deleted our check, and comped our food. If only there was a way to comp out our miserable experience as well. If there was one good thing about this visit, it was that the guy hostess handled the problem like a champ; he was the lone diamond in the rough.
So ultimately, I have to give Sugar Rush Café 2 out of 5 stars. It was almost like they were operating on their 2nd day of business, very rookie-like. I'm sure one day they will be worthy of my 4 or even 5 stars, if they are able to correct the size/seating problems, get some better staffing, and execute their service a little better. Not to mention checking to make sure no human parts are on the dishes would be a definite bonus. They have the food down pat, but in the humble opinion of this reviewer:

Lastly, my theory on the hair winding up in the omelette is due to the whole awkward looks I was giving/getting from the cook who sat at our table before we were seated. Maybe it was the owner who gave me the stink eye, and the hair was his way of telling us subtly to not come back. Well, if my theory is incorrect, then chalk it up to someone with some huge ass thick black hair who doesn't wash dishes properly. Otherwise, if I'm right, we won't be returning anytime soon, and hopefully this review leads some other Yelp diners astray to a place with better table manners. If all else fails, no matter where you go, don't piss off anyone in an apron who may be cooking your food. read more
