My husband and I always loved this place and have been going and bringing guests to Miami for years! Friends came in town and we knew we had to bring them here. We were aware of the $10 per person limit and were ok with this. First of all we got sat at a table tucked away in the corner with zero views for anything that would make you feel like you're about to drop $400 for DRINKS. We asked to move and it was accommodated although the new table still wasn't up to par (zero views) we made it work. We ordered one round and quickly realized the entire place was full of extremely drunk what seemed like underaged college kids. Not what you expect at a high end rooftop bar in brickell. We asked if we could just pay for the round and leave as we had only been sitting there less than 30 minutes and previous times at sugar they are not always strict on the minimum. Manager was sent to the table and was very rude and not accommodating at all. Our out of town friends ended up leaving because they didn't like bathroom activities of other patrons. My husband and I tried to reason with the waiter (who was very nice) but she insisted her manager would not budge. So we decided to make the best of it and order up on the $400 tab we were required to pay. HOWEVER, when we wanted more top shelf brands they didn't have it. We decided to just order bottles to finish out the tab and they didn't have any of our top picks for bottles. This restaurant certainly offers lovely harbor views--but only if you're standing. The tables are set right up against a somewhat dirty glass enclosure, which detracts from the ambiance. The food was solid, with a Korean fusion menu served tapas-style, giving us the chance to try a variety of dishes. The boneless Korean wings were the standout and surprisingly delicious for their understated name. The crispy octopus and bang bang shrimp were also excellent. Unfortunately, the Thai beef satay was dry and overcooked, while the Korean short rib was undercooked and overly pungent. Cocktails were creative but not well-balanced--either too sweet or too spicy, and all on the weaker side. The atmosphere leaned toward trendy but felt a bit over-the-top, with plenty of Instagram influencers treating the dining area like their personal photo studio. It was hard to relax in the middle of what felt like a non-stop photoshoot. The reservation and payment policies were also unusual. Leading up to our visit, I received five text messages confirming our reservation, reminding me about the dress code (which boiled down to "no beachwear"), and reminders that we arrive promptly on time were mentioned in every single text. Upon arrival, the hostess took my credit card and charged the $100 per person minimum spend upfront--a policy I was aware of, but it felt odd to surrender my card for the entire meal. It gave the impression that they've had issues with customers skipping out on the bill. While there were some highlights, the overall experience was more hassle than it was worth. I've been wanting to come here for quite some time and finally grabbed a reservation. I really decided to come to a rooftop dinner when it was 50° out and windy, but nonetheless they made our time enjoyable. They had a gorgeous selection of cocktails to choose from, as we were interchanging and tasting between each others. For food we got plates of pork belly buns, tuna tartare, boneless korean wings, and thai beef as well, and whew can I say everything was delicious. The location, the food and drinks, the staff and vibe it brings and the city view is everything you want. We came early for a Saturday night in Miami. 9:00 pm. We didn't have a reservation but didn't have to wait long. Once we got to the hostess we were given a couple of options. Two of them were $100 per person minimum (we were 4 people) or one hour at a table with no minimum. Guess which we took? We were seated at a pretty cute table across the bar. For being a rooftop lounge I thought there was way too much greenery, trees, bushes. It's like a forest. I didn't even see a hint of a view. Frankly we could have been at any outdoor lounge and it would have felt the same. Didn't feel like a rooftop at all . I guess the view, or even the feeling of being on the 41st floor of a high rise in Miami is only reserved for those who pay. Our waiter was nice and came a few times. We each had a drink. All have quirky names. I chose an old fashioned that was supposed to have banana infused bourbon but tasted like a regular old fashioned. Not bad at all, but not a hint of banana flavor. Drinks were about $16 which is pretty good for Miami. Let alone a super hyped place. We'd had a few drinks prior, so we just had the one round. No food. I though it was good. Because of all the trees we kind of got lost on our way out. The place is quite small (Or at least it feels that way because of all the trees) so that is saying something. I though all the trees are too much and make the place felt claustrophobic. I have no idea how it looks like in the area that does have the view. Anyhow. My friends and I were really looking forward to our last outing in Miami. Unfortunately, we received unfair treatment from the African American security guard with dreads. In order to secure a reservation at Sugar, it's required for you to leave a card on file. No problem. Once we arrived, the security guard looked my friends and I up and down to make sure we were in dress code. He did not do that to any one else in line which we found odd due to us being very dressed up. When we were leaving the restaurant, he then ran after us asking if we paid! When we expressed how offensive that was to ask us after we spent a $500 bill, he said he asks everyone that when they leave. We knew that wasn't true because there was a table right behind us who he said nothing to when they left. We watched them walk out with no problems. We also mentioned that our card was automatically put on file when booking and when being seated at the table. After spending $2000 to stay at the East Hotel for the weekend and having a $500 tab at Sugar, it's a huge slap in the face for that young man to racially profile us. When mentioning our concerns with the ladies at the check in stand, they brushed us off and stated they do that with everyone. After being escorted upstairs, and waiting in the hallway, we were finally shown our table, which was essentially an outdoor picnic table that was highly coveted as they were squatters in our seats, almost immediately upon arriving. Drinks are relatively standard prices for this type of scene and bottle service ranged from $800 plus with mixers. They also had tapas which we tried a few and were enjoyable, but we were all full from our dinner at Doma to really give them a shot. Being on the rooftop, you would think of you to be spectacular. However, many of the tables and windows are far from each other, and window access is mainly blocked off for the most part so you're essentially just enjoying the rainforest theme with your friends on a rooftop with expensive drinks. My bank account is not qualified to be spending the type of money Sugar demands. The view is great when you can see it. I say that because usually it's pretty crowded and sometimes it's hard to find a good spot on the perimeter where you can post up or take good photos. It's also hot AF. Idk why I flat iron my hair before coming here, because I leave looking like Harmione. If you're in town on vacation and money is not an object, pull through. Otherwise, I recommend coming and just seeing the place, because it really is a nice spot. The elevators are great for pics and the bathrooms are always clean. Wow. Six years after my scathing review and I decide to come back - only because they have the Tea Room which sounded like a different lounge altogether. It was. We arrived around the same time and this time it wasn't the mission impossible to get to the roof. We went to Tea Room and enjoyed the magnificent views. You needed reservations to sit but we were happy to stand by the bar and take in the views. It's indoors so it's perfect for any weather. We were not able to sit outside due to the weather, and their team was incredible at communicating this prior and offering a free cancellation. So we sat inside. This review is about an indoor seating. The food was subpar. The service was kind and missed the mark on multiple fronts: - We asked for beer on tap and then was given a bottle of beer. - We asked for water and they brought us a bottle of still water (we did not ask for a bottle) and were given an open bottle. I noted it was open and they claimed they had to open it at the bar because it was hard to open. It tasted like tap water and the table next to us also had the same issue and asked for a refund. - The cocktail was okay, nothing to celebrate. - If you don't hit the $100/person minimum, you can purchase only white and red wine to go. Sugar is a really beautiful and quaint rooftop bar on the fortieth floor of the EAST Miami hotel. It's decorated uniquely with lots of plant life and resembles a forest. The bartenders were extremely attentive, and very quick with their drink making. Our bartender also offered a few suggestions that were helpful. Of course the cocktails are pretty pricey, as you are paying for the view of the city and the bay. But I would say the drinks are good. Worth the price? Maybe not, but definitely worth the experience. We ordered the B positive, Secret to Happiness, and East of Miami cocktails. Great ingredients and very good! And again you can expect a crowd in the busy season with many seating options reserved, but there are some for those that did not reserve a spot.
