I have never written a Yelp review, but this experience deserves one. If I could give Sugar more than five stars, I absolutely would. My friends and I were celebrating my sister's birthday, and unfortunately the night wasn't going as planned and everyone including my sister was getting upset... I became overwhelmed, and before I even had to ask for help, two waitresses came over with napkins and asked if I was okay. A few moments later, Kirsten, the manager , came over, sat with me, gave me a hug, and genuinely listened while I explained what was going on. She didn't rush the conversation or make me feel like just another customer...she truly cared. She even invited me on a walk around the restaurant to help me calm down, reassuring me the entire time that everything was going to be okay. She showed me the beautiful Tea Room and encouraged me to bring my friends and sister over to enjoy it. That ended up being the highlight of our night. The views, atmosphere, and hospitality completely changed the mood for our entire group. From there, every member of the staff continued to make us feel welcome. The bartender kept us laughing, celebrated with us by pouring shots, and made the experience so much fun. The front host (I'm so sorry I forgot your name!) also checked in on us and made sure we were having a great time. Even the security guard went above and beyond... he held his flashlight up while we were taking pictures so we could have the best lighting for our photos. It may seem like a small gesture, but it perfectly showed how every single person on the team genuinely cared about making our night special. Before we left, Kirsten came back one last time just to make sure everyone was happy... I've been to a lot of restaurants, lounges, and clubs, but I've never experienced service like this, seriously. The staff at Sugar don't just provide great service... they genuinely care about people. That level of kindness is rare and honestly brings tears to my eyes, and it's something I'll never forget. Thank you, Kirsten, and the entire Sugar team, for turning what could have been a disappointing night into one of the most memorable experiences my friends, my sister, and I have ever had. When in Miami for a bachelorette party and you're the maid of honor, you have a lot of planning to do! The first restaurant I chose was Sugar, the rooftop bar. I coordinated ahead of time with the night manager regarding a prix fixe menu that included drinks for our group of 20 ladies. When we arrived, there was unfortunately some confusion. From our prior conversations, I don't recall it being explained that it would be more of a sit-and-stand dinner setup. The space itself was beautiful, but it felt more suited for cocktails rather than a seated dinner for a large group. We were offered another option at the Tea Room on the other side, which had more dining space. I will say the food was excellent--Asian tapas-style cuisine and everything we tried was very good. However, there still weren't enough seats for everyone, and two bridesmaids and I ended up standing for most of the dinner. They did eventually bring out two chairs, but by that point I was already a bit frustrated. Another challenge was communication with the staff. We were being charged for sparkling water when we had asked for regular water, which should have been included with our meal. I also had to remind them that our package included two drinks per person. The drinks came out slowly, while the food came out quickly. I understand accommodating a group of 20 can be challenging, and overall everything worked out with a few bumps along the way. That said, the food really was excellent. Love this place so much! I've been to this bar numerous times and always have a great time. Staff is (usually) nice, with great personable bartenders. There's tons of seating, however, they're sometimes sticklers about you sitting at a table if you didn't reserve, even if the place is empty. They have seating at the bar, and high tops near the bar as well. The views are absolutely amazing both during the day and at night. It does get windy up there but they have windows and lots of trees so it's never that bad. They even take the cushions away when it rains so if you go after it stops raining the couches and seats will be dry. The drinks are all super delicious. I've never had any food here, but it looks good from what I've seen. Anytime my friends come visit Miami I take them here and it's always a fan favorite. read more

However I found that you couldn't get close to the glass if you didn't have a table. So the views I had were obstructed by people and decor. It was absolutely packed, which made it difficult to walk around the rooftop. Also I ordered two tequilas with pineapple juice and paid like $55 after the mandatory service charge. That's insane. My friend and I tried to get a table and went to the hostess, and instead of letting us know if anything would be available, she just told us to check back in 20 minutes it was already 11 PM. We came back because we saw two open tables, and again she told us to wait another 20 minutes. When I pointed out the available tables, she said they were reserved but still wouldn't let us leave our name or hold a spot. It felt really dismissive. Just went for drinks, line was around 45 minutes around 11pm on a Friday but it was worth it when I went up. Few seats on the side that you can take if available without paying table fee. The customer service at this establishment was the worst I have encountered in Miami. I booked a reservation in April for a trip in June. Shortly after I made this reservation, I had a life altering family emergency which caused me to cancel my reservation early May. I made my reservation online, but called to cancel this early May and received a call back a few days after I left a voicemail confirming my cancellation. The original reservation date went by and I receive a $600 CAD charge from Sugar for not attending this reservation (FYI I received a confirmation text of this 'reservation' the day after my reservation was to take place- had I received this on time I would have course corrected). Not only was I still dealing with my family emergency at home, but I now had to deal with the worst customer service I have ever received from the assistant manager at Sugar- Brian. To prove that I cancelled my reservation I had to send my personal outgoing and incoming call logs from my mobile provider to Brian, I had asked to chat on the phone multiple times to have this solved quicker with no response from Brian. I called East Miami, left voice mails for Sugar and emailed Brian to limited responses. I have asked to escalate to the manager- still have not received a response. This has been such a stressful ordeal on top of an already stressful situation, it's been almost a week with no resolution and no refund. If you are looking to spend your money and have a great time with great service, I would highly recommend going elsewhere in Brickell. read more

Sugar is a well known rooftop bar in Brickell. In my opinion the views are limited. To enjoy a view of the city you need to get a table along the perimeter but that requires VIP. Seating is very limited and only for VIP or dining guests. There is one central bar that everyone crowds around. On busy nights you need to squeeze your way to the bar to order a drink and squeeze your way back out to join friends. I've been there a handful of times, each reluctantly due to friends persistent requests, but I am never impressed every time I go, lol. read more

Our server was magnificent, and the food was spectacular. The only thing is, I was wearing a nice outfit: black jeans, a dress shirt, a fedora, and Birkenstocks. They said no sandals. Stay away from this venue. I was extremely disappointed with the employees at Sugar and Tea Room. This is likely why fewer classy, self-respecting patrons are attending compared to the past. Something in their management or operations has clearly changed. I used to visit these venues frequently, but one night I was abruptly escorted out with no explanation or reason given. I later learned from others that if you're not constantly purchasing drinks, they will single you out and ask you to leave. I'm not a big drinker--but had I been treated with respect, I would have gladly made full dinner nights out of it there. On previous visits, security staff would oddly sit next to me and ask if I was "okay," as if something was wrong, despite there being no issue. On another occasion, I was told to leave without any explanation whatsoever. I am a well-dressed, respectful, and well-groomed individual, and the only apparent reason for this treatment was that I wasn't repeatedly buying overpriced drinks or reserving a table. Staff constantly watch and patrol the venue, which creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and discourages guests from ordering at their own pace. This made me feel unwelcome and pressured rather than relaxed. Additionally, having worked closely with city code compliance in the past, I can say that the hallway connecting Sugar and Tea Room appears too narrow during their over-capacity weekend nights, creating a potential fire hazard in the event of an emergency. I'm not sure whether the city has been made aware of this. I am a reasonable and respectful person and would not have posted this review if management had simply provided an explanation or apology after I reached out privately. I received an initial response stating they would follow up, but no further communication ever came. Brickell now offers many better options, and I've been treated far better at other venues. Until I receive an apology and a genuine welcome back, I see no reason to remove this review or return. read more

Then I have also heard they have a dress code, so dress well (you will also fit in better--people were really dressed up). We were only there for cocktails. If you want a table, there is a $100/per person minimum charge that I do not think is hard to meet. Then to get good view, book reservations well in advance. All this is justified. The views are stunning and the whole atmosphere is wonderful, with the trees and plants breaking up the tables. We went to the bar and got our cocktails. The bartenders are super fast and good, but it can be a bit of a wait. It is worth it, all of use really enjoyed our drinks and their menu is interesting. I actually love how they keep a standard. Please keep in mind they have a dress code. Even if you're staying at the hotel it will still be enforced. I've been there several times for drinks and dancing at the tea room lounge but this time I went for dinner for a friend's birthday. We started with a couple drinks at the tea room and then the server took us to our table at sugar. We had a nice table at the corner so we got to enjoy the view. It look a little bit to get the table but once we were there we had a nice space for ourselves. The food was delicious, we had the octopus and sushi. The best part was the big desert platter at the end. The drinks also were good and fresh and the server was checking on us to ensure we had everything we needed. The perfect example that expensive doesn't always mean better. My husband and I visited this place while in Miami because it looked nice from the outside. We expected it to be pricey, but what we didn't expect was the lack of transparency and hidden charges. When we arrived, they asked for our card and had us sign a document in a very dark room without explaining anything. We assumed it was just the usual authorization restaurants require. Big mistake -- always read before signing. Later, the waitress informed us there was a $200 minimum spend, which no one had mentioned before. Apparently, the paper we signed was actually an agreement to that minimum charge, meaning even if you don't spend $200, they still charge you the full amount. On top of that, there is a mandatory 20% gratuity. We ended up paying almost $300 between taxes, forced extra food just to reach the minimum, and the tip. The food wasn't bad, but the lack of transparency completely ruined the experience. My advice: read everything before signing anything here. read more

Our visit to Sugar was the high point (ha ha) of a night bar hopping in the Brickell district of downtown. It was also a brief visit to how "the other half" lives. Brokers, wealthy tourists, Instagram models (or aspiring ones) and others all dressed to the nines filled out the bustling crowd in this rooftop bar on the 40th floor of The East Hotel -- taken all together, it epitomizes the glamour that folks who live outside of Florida and maybe only see Miami on TV and in movies imagine when they think of the city. I can't speak to the food -- we grabbed a bite earlier in the evening at another local spot nearby. But our chosen drink for the evening was excellent. If you're into coffee drinks, check out "Soft. Silk. Sip" on the signature cocktail menu. Once you've got your drink in hand, keep a sharp eye out for a spot to sit or stand along the edge of the space you can enjoy the views. We were there on a beautiful clear night, so the lights of the city spread out for miles. A beautiful rooftop bar in the center of Miami downtown. As soon as you step inside, you're surrounded by a wooden oasis that feels like you've entered a jungle.
