The service wasn't very good. The place wasn't busy at all but it took over an hour to prepare the food. We left before all the items we ordered were made so it could've been much longer. Management isn't staffing enough. Also, the staff shouldn't loudly laugh about the situation in an open concept. Yes, they were speaking Cantonese but some of your patrons can speak it (even the white ones). Although they were very polite in English and did try to compensate for the delay. Very tiny restaurant. Most of the tables are booth seats. You order off a QR code but our waiter offered us a physical menu which I really appreciated. Overall service was quite good. The food was cheap and nice. The supreme mango pancake was good- it's a crepe filled with whipped cream and mangoes. The size was nice. My boyfriend got the matcha parfait. The matcha ice cream had a really odd flavour to it- it was almost alcohol-like. The parfait was okay, it came with cereal, strawberries and cream. We also ordered the golden mango drink which was nice until I found an odd black substance in my drink. It kind of looked like a scraping of some sort. First time trying Sugar Marmalade because my friend suggested it as he enjoyed their desserts at their Mississauga location. We had the pumpkin seasonal mixed dessert which came with rice cakes, tapioca, and sago. We also had the durian coconut sago dessert. Both desserts were a good portion but for the taste, it did taste quite watered down. For the durian coconut sago, they gave us lots of sago, two small pieces of (real!) durian in coconut milk. Chocolate Egg Waffle: It was not too overly sweet and had a fluffy texture in the egg waffles. Usually I'm not a big chocolate person but the chocolate flavour wasn't too overwhelming. I have dined here 2 times during 2 different occasions. First was to try their dessert offerings, and the second one was to sample their savory meal offerings. Both times were good and memorable experiences. What stands out right away is the look and feel of the place. It is properly furnished and curated. There were enough seating to host the volume of customers. It was also a perfect idea to have a remote button to call the waiter to order, to pay, or for all other service requests since the place's floor plan is long and narrow. Last couple of things is that the food menu is expertly and professionally crafted, and the actual food you select and order comes out the same way it shows. Food presentation is excellent. What just puts me off and what I have observed both times I was here was the level of service you receive could be better. The servers were too dependent on the remote button ringing. Even then by beeping them, you do not get a prompt response. Waiting times are longer than acceptable. The servers also do not routinely walk around and see if there is any assistance they can provide or if there are any glass of water that can be refilled. Lastly, it is inconvenient that they do not have tap and credit card available as modes of payment. It says so in the written sign they have by the counter. The icecream also tasted very artificial so I didn't end up finishing it all. Taro black glutinous rice (5/5) I loved this one! The wait for the pickup took about 10 minutes, which was what they informed us. The Taiwanese chicken was very delicious and was a generous portion. It was still very hot by the time we got the order and it wasn't too fried. I could taste a lot of the chicken and it was seasoned well. I expected more from the black sesame paste. It's one of my favourite desserts and it's really hard to do well. The paste from Sugar Marmalade was too water-y and you couldn't taste the richness of the black sesame. The portion was also small. The tang yuan were quite yummy but I felt it was too chewy compared to what I'm used to. The order this time from SM was experimental and it didn't live up to my expectations. One of my essential orders at Sugar Marmalade include their Teriyaki Fries (first photo). A handful of slim cut fries topped with mayonnaise, teriyaki sauce, seaweed flakes and bonito flakes. If you've ever had the Japanese dish called Takoyaki, this is basically it (except with fries instead of octopus balls). A great dish for sharing! Only let down was that the location did not provide forks and instead gave us two long skewer sticks to pick at the fries (lol that's a first for me) I also ordered the Fresh Fruits with Soya Bean Jelly (second photo). It's basically the Chinese dish Douhua topped with strawberries, mangoes, cantaloupes, watermelons and papaya cubes. One of my favourite places to go to if I want Asian sweets, they have such a huge selection and great costumer service too.

The area of where sugar marmalade is at is kind of sketchy at night and I had an unfortunate and uncomfortable encounter of gang like people coming into the store. The owners however treated us nicely and were very apologetic about it. They dealt with the situation to the best of their ability but I would suggest going there during the day instead. The desserts did take a little longer than usual to come but the taste was worth it. The black sesame paired really well with the egg waffles and the waffle was freshly made so it was hot and crispy. Great pairing of hot and cold ! The mango pudding wasn't too sweet but the mangos were a little sour (bad season?). The desserts were reasonably priced. For a Taiwanese dessert place... I thought it'd be better. Nothing wrong exactly but I had higher expectations. They try to pull off a cool Asian fusion vibe but honestly, given the location in Chinatown and the fact the whole place is just painted black from the inside, it's just not that impressive. For example, some 'cool' or 'hip' things they've done including put a spotlight shining their logo in the front entrance and each table has a 'call' button. Meh, seems superficial in contrast given that we have to write down our orders ourselves in spite of these features. As for the food, couple of my friends got the sago here and it didn't look very appetizing. I got the strawberry shaved ice which I thought was much better. I thought shaved ice would be more icey? It was more like they put ice cream through a slicer. The ice cream was great though. The jam was a little bit extra but tastey as I like strawberry jam. The ice cream bowl was also nice and cold. I also got popcorn chicken to-go here once. They were pretty busy but I waited a LONG time for the popcorn chicken. Wasn't salty enough. I think I'll try the waffle next time if I ever come by again.
