Im really disappointed by my interaction with Ali the business owner. I was excited to work with a local small business and after checking their portfolio, I emailed to inquire about getting a custom cake made for my boyfriends birthday. Initially she responded to my inquiry with information and questions about what I wanted which I answered and never heard from her again. I called the shop repeatedly just to get some answers/information whether she was still willing to do the cake however I was not able to reach anyone. I emailed soon after requesting an update and nothing. This left me scrambling to search for another baker last minute (luckily I found a different one) to get a custom cake made. I would've understood and appreciated an email explaining either they couldn't do it or whatever might be going on so that I may have at least moved on to a different bakery but nothing. Just off of this experience, I would not recommend at least with ordering a custom cake. read more

I visited SLBS years ago when they were in the Vons shopping center. Went back one day and they were gone. Well, turns out they moved practically to my backyard and I didn't even know. A very cute, clean shop that offers various treats and specialty drinks right in the center of the Ventura Harbor. It was enjoyable to sit and take in the scenery on a nice day while stuffing my face full of 3k calories. The flavor of the raspberry cupcake was good, not too sweet. The kitchen sink cookie was outstanding. The counter person was helpful in navigating the menu and chose my coffee drink for me per my request and it was great. I did go before closing so there wasn't a lot left to choose from... but that's the beauty of a small biz bakery! Get on it first or miss out! I'm so grateful I found Sugar Lab a few years ago! Their cakes are beautifully crafted and delicious. I'm not local, but I have family nearby who have enjoyed every cake I've sent them from this bakery. I've been so impressed with the service I've received, as well. My recommendation is not to go later in the day. Dear Hubby and I stopped in after visiting Top This Chocolate. I was saving my chocolate bar for later, and was interested in a baked good dessert after the dinner we were about to have at On The Alley. It was about 4:30 when we dropped by, and they were mostly cleaned out in the bakery case. On a positive note for those that are gluten-free eaters - they do feature a number of GF items, from cupcakes, to muffins, to cookies. As our neighbor requires GF foods, we were able to pick her up a treat as they had more items available for her at that hour than they did for those that don't have that restriction. The cupcakes are on the small side, and are loaded with buttercream frosting. Since I can't have dairy, real buttercream would be a no-no for me. DH ordered the ube cupcake with ube buttercream frosting. I chose a snickerdoodle cookie. I found the cookie to be slightly under-baked. DH let me try a bite of the cupcake, skipping the frosting. It was flavorful, moist, and not too sugary. Macarons are also an item they feature. A little pricey at $3 a piece, since they are so small. I am okay with paying that at Bottega Louie in DTLA, but not so much at Ventura Harbor. At Louie you get elegant atmosphere and gorgeous packaging. Sugar Lab is more basic. We don't have a dog, but if we did, we'd likely treat them to their dog treat cookies. Decorated with colorful, fanciful frosting, they were a visual high point in an otherwise mostly-empty display case. Service-wise, there were three staff members working, and they seemed to be more interested in talking with each other than with greeting us when we walked into the empty shop. Finally, one of them noticed us and offered assistance. Let's say, I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling during our visit. I would visit them again, and I've enjoyed their pre-wrapped cookies at other events and enjoyed them in that setting. My first visit to their brick and mortar location wasn't a big hit, though. read more

We've come to the Ventura Harbor many times, but it's our first time stopping by here! The most adorable bake shop, they have both bake goods as well as various drinks. While we didn't try their baked goods on this visit because we were in search of something to drink, they looked so cute and absolutely delicious - we can't wait to stop by next time to give them a try. Their cold brew, though, was delicious. It had a sweeter flavor to it while still holding true to the coffee flavor. So enjoyable. Bright and cute cupcake shop right in the harbor! I've been picking up cupcakes from Sugar Lab since their old location on Telegraph, it's great they're in an even livelier location. The cupcakes are moist and not overly sweet. My go to cupcake is a red velvet with cream cheese frosting and they do it well here. Also tried the gluten free banana peanut butter cupcake. It was tasty and I couldn't stop thinking "if I was a pup, I'd REALLY love this cupcake". Bf loved the carrot cake cupcake, I did not get to try any because he ate it all. We also enjoyed the vanilla cupcake with buttercream! I love the ease and convenience of online ordering. Pick out your cupcakes and pay online with a quick pickup at the counter. We decided to go with white almond with chocolate buttercream for one tier and lemon with strawberry swiss buttercream for the other tier. Everyone had great things to say about our cake! This company made it very easy to order, as well as scheduling and coordinating delivery to our venue! We wanted a small cake that we could cut during cake cutting for our wedding and get photos of but we didn't want a cake big enough to serve our guests. We headed here on a rainy & cold Sunday morning, right when they opened at 9 AM. Audrey helped us & was so warm & sweet! I got a hot cider & these ADORABLE & super fancy, beautifully decorated sugar cookies! They kind you'd normally have to pre-order. The cider was hot, sweet, with some tartness. It was lovely & so delicious! Great alternative to hot chocolate, tea or coffee. In addition to my free goodies, I got beignets & my hubby got a coffee & red velvet cupcake, which are his absolute favorite! The space is clean, spacious, well organized, bright & cheery. We enjoyed our treats inside as it poured outside. It was nice having the place to ourselves, but we didn't stay long. Sugarlab is an awesome spot to come for treats, grab a friend & have coffee or to buy desserts for your next meeting, party or get together. It's located in Ventura Harbor so it's a beautiful place to grab a treat & walk around. Unfortunately, they do not have any vegan options, or at least when I was there I did not see any.
