I absolutely loved my time and meal at sugar grits. Prices very reasonable. I had the rise and shine and I never had cheese in my grits but my goodness it was delicious. My husband had the whole farm omelet which was amazing. Their biscuits are sooo soft. The drinks were definitely strong and good. Service was great. The grits were pretty good but that is the only positive about this place. It was warm and stuffy inside so seems like they don't want to keep it comfortable for diners. I think the 3+ rating is pretty accurate. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Yesterday's breakfast was cool I'm not a breakfast eater but I did enjoy the grit fritters. As this was my first trip to the Deep South, I wanted to try food that was local to the area. I stopped at Sugar Grits for lunch and saw chicken and waffles on the menu. I had never seen that combination offered before. My order came, and it clearly exceeded my expectations. The waffle was done perfectly. That was not such a surprise, since you can get perfectly done waffles almost anywhere. However, the waffle was topped with chicken which, as I found was customary in the South, was fried perfectly. My order was wrong three times. Each time something on my breakfast plate was wrong. First time- they accidentally bring toast en lieu of the biscuit I ordered. Didn't take a bite of anything. They were apologetic, offer to bring me a new plate. Second time, I begin am able to begin eating. biscuit tastes great, grits taste great, I noticed the omelet I ordered, I am a strict vegetarian has meat in it. I inform the staff who is again so apologetic and sweet. I was going to continue eating the parts of the meal that were good- I was only a few bites in to the biscuit and grits, but my whole plate is taken once again. I then wait 20 minutes for the third plate where everything is wrong but the omelet. Toast (I did not order), grits (sans the cheese I ordered), and the veggie omelet. At this point, I'm starving and am just gonna eat without sending it back especially since the staff "personally checked" to make sure the order was correct. Two stars for taste of food that I could eat while I briefly had it and another for the comped bill due to all the errors. I didn't even tell them the third plate was the most wrong, bc what was the point. I just left the toast and half eaten sides there as evidence that they messed up for the third and final time. Stumbled upon this place by accident while visiting Memphis and since I love grits had to check it out. We arrived at lunch time and there were so many things on the menu we had a hard time deciding what we wanted. We started with the fried pickled okra which was so yummy! The buttermilk sauce on it was outstanding, we were dipping our fries in it. My friend, who is basically a biscuit connoisseur, ordered a biscuit and declared it was one of the best he's ever had. He also loved the chick-a-doodle-doo sandwich. I ordered the gardners grits, a vegetarian grit dish that was incredible. Nonna's Old Style Grits bowl. Substituted parm grits for yummy cheesey cheddar grits, included pesto chicken, sautéed garlic spinach, and I had the tomato gravy on the side. Everything was delicious. I was skeptical about the tomato gravy but it was a very nice compliment to the chicken. Our waitress was very nice, checked on us just the right amount of times and gave nice recommendations.
