Penny has a really great approach to designing wedding cakes! During our consultation, we didn't have a very clear idea of what we wanted. Luckily, Penny was full of great ideas! She asked us questions about what vibe we were going for, what our venue was like, and what was important to us both aesthetically and sentimentally for the cake to reflect. We were already feeling pretty good about Penny after one phone call with her. THEN we tasted the cake. It was MUCH higher quality then the two other bakers we tasted cakes from. After that we were sold. We hired her to a design a wedding cake that reflected the venue (a rooftop farm in Brooklyn). She came up with the really cool idea of designing a cake that reflected the distinctive bluestone pathways and wildflower groves that distinguish the venue. I felt like I had a unique, meaningful work of art at my wedding! Worth mentioning that it is wheelchair accessible as well. Clean, organized and well spaced out are all great descriptors of this venue. The décor is modern, yet quaint, with mini chandelier lights, Blue paint and marble tables which are strangely reminiscent of a large home kitchen. Chef-owner, Penny, is Sweet as pie (see what I did there) but dont let that sweetness fool you as she makes savory treats appear with a slight of hand. It's really difficult to decide what to order here, unless you have issues being disciplined when it comes to sugar consumption... Like me, and order a bit of this and a lot of that... There will be enough that captures your eye from a salt and pepper croissant to peanut butter cookies or Macarons or even macaroons. I think the baker is pretty accomplished to pull off all of this while ensuring creative tweaks here and there: like raisins in the fudgy dark chocolate pecan brownie or the chocolate croissant bread pudding. If you have issues with delayed gratification - like me - it would be advisable to skip the goods in the refrigerated case and stick with room temperature goods for I could barely sink my teeth into the cupcake 15 minute after purchase without escaping the feeling of having eaten a stick of butter... That said, I'm really impressed by the room temperature baked goods with my favorite being the breakfast cookie - it's almost like cookie dough with almonds and chocolate and made me think of it as a quality marzipan product. Highly recommend the macarons and chocolate bread pudding. The macarons were some of the best ones I've had. I had the plum cardamom which looked exquisite and was firm upon bite. Super sweet, would go well with a cup of tea. The chocolate bread pudding was delightful and lasted me two days with its chocolatey goodness. I came for a quick coffee and pastry. They brew Toby's Estate and I have no complaints about my cold brew. But the pastry I ordered - the baked french toast - was just not good. It was served cold and looked almost raw on the inside. Although there seemed to be a lot of attempted flavor complexity, the best bites were just those covered in powder sugar. Came to this bakery after doing a google search for nearby bakeries. My family and I were dining nearby and I wanted to get my brother a birthday cake. Upon walking in, the bakery smelled amazing. I saw a sign that said "ask about what's being sampled" so I asked. I was given a sample of the gooey butter cake and immediately bought 3 of them to share. It was sweet, with a slight crunch on the outside and a delightfully gooey center. I also left with a chocolate mini cake for my brother's birthday. Can't wait to slice into it when we get home! Penny created and made my wedding cake for our October wedding and it was delicious in a way that has made me wonder how many special occasions I can possibly have so I can order more cake from Sugar Couture! Cake tasting with Penny was one of our favorite parts of the planning process--Penny is an amazing listener and artfully intuitive. She knows her stuff, is organized, and made the cake planning process amazing and seamless. We had dreams of a tiramisu wedding cake, knowing it wouldn't be possible for the amount of our guests (we wouldn't want something so yummy collapsing under the weight of all that espresso!). But, she worked with us to create a cake that made our dreams come true--an espresso dipped cake with alternating flavors of espresso and vanilla buttercream. It was so good that even typing that description makes me sad I can't run to Williamsburg as we speak for another cake. Know how most people keep a portion of their wedding cake for their first anniversary? Wellllllll....we took the top tier home, yes. But, we ate it all within a few days after our wedding. It was just far too good to imagine it with freezer burn a year later--but if we're being honest here, it was too good not to eat it all then and there. Alas though! I understand that you have to pay your rent so you charge $3.50 but if I'm getting something that came out of your freezer that is rock hard and not moist please don't call yourself couture. I should have written this review 2 years ago when I first visited the Sugar Couture bake shop. Every year before Christmas, I go back to my old stomping grounds to visit friends before heading home to upstate NY or back to LA. 2 years ago I purchased a mini matcha cake for my friend I was staying with and few cupcakes to bring back to LA. 4 days and a 6 hour flight later, the said cupcakes were still amazing. I also had a gluten free cupcake while I was in the shop, which btw is ADORABLE. Last year I purchased another mini cake for my friend's parents for their Christmas Eve dinner and got rave reviews about it. I brought some croissants and cupcakes back to upstate for my family which also got rave reviews. I bought some truffles to bring back as well but ended up hoarding them all to myself because they were just too good to share. I'm going back to the city again this year before Christmas and plan on stocking up again to bring some goodies back home. Genuinely love this place. read more

Definitely some pros and cons about this place. The space is nice, although there are only two tables. The sweets all look delicious, but they're pretty pricey. $3.75 for a brownie... with raisins. Who puts raisins in brownies? Also, for tiny chocolates it's $1.75. In regards to customer service, one word: TERRIBLE. The young lad in the front did not know how to manage several customers at a time and when I had a question about the chocolates, the owner, Penny, responded in such a rude manner. I'm sorry but I don't like my chocolates served with sides of bitterness and condescendence. We had Sugar Couture do our wedding cake. Our wedding was a fusion of Sri Lankan, with Jamaican and Tanzanian cultures, and essentially it was a Bollywood wedding. ONe thing I really admire about Penny is that she is extremely diligent in what she does and craves originality and creation. Our cake tasting was one of the best things about wedding planning. It was delicious, amazing, mouth-watering, I wanted everything! She sat with the both of us, listened to what our wedding venue was, colors, ideas, and created this beautiful, elegant masterpiece. She created this gold stencil on every other layer, and incorporated our wedding colors into the hand-made sugar flowers that looked SO REAL. It was so beautiful I didn't want to cut into it, but so glad we did because the taste was amazing. In fact, we ended up eating the top layer of the whole cake 2 days after the wedding.
