Great brewery for beers and food in Catskill! Besides some tables inside, they have outdoor seating with fire pits which is nice during the fall days. The outdoor space is dog friendly. The selection of beers and other drinks has something for everyone. There was a special Oktoberfest brew when we stopped by. The food menu goes well with their beers. Smash burgers, chicken sandwiches, finger foods, salads and seasonal specials make up the menu. We ordered a smash burger, special schnitzel sandwich and a Caesar salad. The burger was made up of two patties on a milk bun with the traditional toppings. Very satisfying. The pork schnitzel sandwich was thin and crispy also on the milk bun and a nice alternative to fried chicken. Worth a stop for a casual meal while in Catskill! read more

Drop by here for a drink and some snacks. The venue is medium sized but there's plenty of outdoor space if it's not raining. It appears to be dog friendly as well. It was self service at the counter. We were disappointed that the onion rings were only offered on certain days but we were able to get some pretzels and beers. I do like that you can order a half pour/small glass to try different beers. I liked the Heritage grape ale framhouse beer a lot but also unfortunately they did not carry them in cans to take away. Nice place to chill for a while if you're in the catskills! read more

First thing you see pulling up to Subversive Brewing is gravel. A whole front lot of it. And behind that, those tall industrial beer tanks. The gravel path pulls you in towards their outdoor area with picnic tables under big black+white umbrellas and there's a tent with white lights that'll be straight-up cozy once the sun goes down. You order at the bar, keep a tab if you're settling in and grab one of those tall number poles so they know where to bring your food. Inside, it's all high-tops and a clear view of the tanks cranking out their beer. Even though I've never been a beer drinker, I didn't mind coming to Subversive B's. Their online menu looked promising especially their vegetarian options. Though it wouldn't hurt if they threw in some seafood options too- but hey. I aimed for the Mediterranean Platter but I was told they "were all out". Grilled cheese the way I noticed online? Nope. Not in here. At this point, I didn't know how else to feel but resorted to their sweet potato+black bean tacos with red onions and Cotija. They slapped actually. Hubs tore into his buffalo wings and these Bavarian pretzels that were ridiculously soft and addictive. He washed it down with an ale, I stuck with a canned Paloma that hit harder than expected. The service is nice. The menu situation? Kinda irritating. Between the "we're out" moments and the website vs. reality mismatch, it's hard not to feel a little side-eyed about it. But the vibe, outdoor lights, beer tanks if you're a beer drinker, gravel under your feet, it's got charm. read more

35.00 for 2 margaritas 3/4 full. The person making them asked if I wanted more ice to fill them up . No ! No I don't want more ice . Okay then if you want to keep a tab open you will need to leave me your credit card. What a way to say I don't trust my customers . 1/2 service 1/2 not but by all means make sure you tip 20 percent for doing most of the work . Oh and don't forget the porta potty that you pass by as you enter . Never again . read more

Awesome brewery with great food and atmosphere too! I visited on a Sunday night in the winter and was blown away with the ample outdoor space complete with fire pits and comfortable seating. It was so warm and cozy to sit outdoors, which was awesome. My boyfriend ordered a beer and I opted for the hot apple cider. We also ordered wings, which were absolutely delicious. You order at the bar and they give you a number if you order food. We were really impressed with their ample food menu and great selection of beers and non alcoholic options. Definitely a must visit in Catskill! read more

Food and music were good. Admittedly we got there 20 minutes before closing (although the sign on site and the website both indicate that the kitchen and taproom close at the same time and then asked if the kitchen was still open. Curly haired young white guy said he didn't think the kitchen was open but he'd check. Then he came right back out and took our order but steered us in the direction of burgers I assume because they're easy to make and they're known for them. Don't know why really but we like burgers. My wife ordered the mushroom Swiss and I got the bacon bbq. Both came with fries! Exciting! Tried to order beers and the curly haired gentleman told me that he wasn't comfortable serving me because I was "wandering around." It's not like there was a sign that said wait to be seated by host. I didn't wander into the kitchen. I walked over a table to sit down. Maybe he assumed I was drunk but I frankly was just irritated that they were trying to close the kitchen on us before the time they advertise they do. I mean I get it. They want to go home. We are very capable of dining quickly and taking off and I'm sure not everybody is. Anyway, he told me he wasn't comfortable serving me and to split the beer my wife had gotten. I had been really excited to try out that golden lime beer and had it taken away from me over a misunderstanding. I even tried to clarify with him. When I walked in, I had been drinking a green tea out of a styrofoam cup from my hotel so I didn't doze off as I often do. I told him it was just tea but I guess he didn't believe me. My wife talked to another member of staff who explained that her curly headed coworker had just misunderstood and she said she'd talk to her boss and get back to us. Then we never saw her again until after the taps were closed at 8:35pm and by that point there was nothing she could do she said. Before 8:30 well after we'd ordered, another customer came up and tried to order and we heard a member of staff say "you're just in time! We're closing our kitchen in 2 minutes!" WHAT?! So the kitchen wasn't closed?! I felt like this guy lied to us to try to guilt us into going somewhere else and then when his boss told us to give us service took out his anger on my beer order. Horrendous service. We ate pretty quickly and left around 8:45pm and as we were leaving we noticed another couple there still dining who my wife told me they had just given them another round of drinks. So weird. Terrible way to start our honeymoon but whatever. Probably not coming back until that guy gets trained on how to tell if somebody is drunk or not and then more importantly, how to behave towards customers. read more

Great burgers, great beer, friendly staff, and a cool, laid back vibe. Outdoor seating under the pavilion or tables & booths indoors.

Can't get enough of the Bacon BBQ Smash burger. Outstanding every time. Showing Jaws last Friday night was fun. Subversive's Saison is my new 'go to'. Crisp, refreshing. Staff is great, as always. Consistently great experience. read more

This brewery has great vibes! It's dog friendly outside, but with ample seating. I liked the riverboat Rickey, my husband liked their nitro dark ale. Good treasured good, the chicken Sammie was immaculate. Pretty quick service. Wish the water cups were bigger.

I think they have changed the NY Nectar recipe. It has tasted more like a lager/pilsner since the Winter. I though they poured me the wrong beer. I had it again the other day and was the same. There isn't any real "hazy" here unfortunately. The burger is amazing though. read more

A small inside but nice outdoor space that was pretty poppin on the Saturday we ventured over. The food and beer was a hit. Nice portion size. Being that the inside is so small it was kind of awkward that the one waitstaff would just be standing waiting by the kitchen(?) It helped to achieve quick service as he was just right there and but also made it feel like he was just watching us eat. I noted that they have a sign on the door to not bring dogs inside yet allowed several people to do so which was annoying. These were clearly not service animals as they were jumping on people and not obedient to their owners. All in all we would probably come back in warmer weather and try the outdoor space. read more

Lucked out in rolling up just in time for trivia on Thursday at 630 (every other week? Would want to verify). Great space with indoor and outdoor (covered) seating. Food so good it feels like an injustice to call it "bar food". The spinach dip and fries were top tier. Great brews according to my partner, and for my sober azz a soda with bitters always works (also have sodas and spindrifts). Staff was friendly and trivia was truly a good time! One of my favorite places to grab a beer and a burger. such a cute beer garden and they often have live music.

A nice village hangout spot, with plenty of options for food, drinks, and patio seating, which I think is the best part! I had their pretty pink beer slushie, made from their Forbidden Fruit Black Currant Sour Ale, and a classic burger with fries. It's a good quality burger with crispy fries. On a warm night, the slushie was the perfect complement to the meal. For a brewery, there's a number of other stuff on the menu if you don't want a burger or need a vegetarian option. After my entire family's order, it didn't take long for all the food to come out. I did not mind enjoying the chill atmosphere and green surroundings while we waited. I'm very curious about how they chose the name for the brewery. (Sounds cool?) I can't wait to come back when I'm in the area! read more

The restaurant was recommended by a local. We ordered the classic burger with the beer flight. Price point was pretty good for the amount of food and drinks we received. Found this place while in the area for garlic fest. Cozy atmosphere. There's seating outside with fire pits and picnic type tables around where live music is preformed. Definitely nice for a date, guys or girls night out. It just happened to be Oktoberfest the day my friends and I came. They offered an Oktoberfest menu for food. Not sure what the food offerings are otherwise as I didn't see another menu. For my beer I went with the local lager. It was light and an easy drinking beer. Their pour sizes are different...7.5 oz, 13 oz or 18 oz. Prices were decent as well. It was $10 for an 18 oz pour. I would be back if I'm ever in the area again. read more

I discovered this place last summer and it's quickly become one of my favorite local spots when we're in the Hudson valley. My family has a wide range of beer preferences and their rotating draft list has something for everyone - though I'm a fan of their New England IPAs and sours myself. Every time I've been there's a little tent outside the brewery with an impressive pizza oven serving a rotating menu of amazing wood-fired pizzas. I was absolutely blown away by how good these are and they're the perfect pairing for the awesome beer this place has on tap. I think they've opened up a full kitchen since I was last here, so I'm dying to go back and give it a try. There's a ton of outdoor seating and a charming heated tent + fire places make it accessible in the winter. The indoor seating is minimal, but I've never needed it. There's a little parking lot + tons of street parking and dogs are allowed outside, so this place is a win all around in my book. read more

Subversive Malting and Brewing in Catskill is a local brewery amongst the only in the world that produce their malts via Floor Malting. We had a flight of beer along with a classic smash burger and pulled pork sandwich. We enjoyed the brews made with locally sourced ingredients and couldn't help picking up four packs of the NY Nectar (Hazy IPA) and Tiny Glasses (Kölsch-style ale) for the road. Subversive was our favorite brewery on our Catskills trip and will def stop if we're ever in the area again read more

We came here after a beautiful hike at the Kaarterskill trail. The place was busy. Food came out quickly. However, we asked for well done burgers and they were half cooked. When he asked them to give us well done burger as they explain how they do this burgers. We could visible see the burger wasn't well done. My wife asked for a side salad instead of fries, it was a spring mix salad and it was old. read more

The town of Catskill is where it's at !! Artist, dreamers, and outdoor lovers all agree. Only an hour drive from the Capital Region and 2 hour drive from NYC. Catskill has it all, 2 breweries, coffee shops, good food and outdoor fun. Bring the dog, dog friendly shops and streets. We walked over from downtown Catskill to Subversive brewery for a long over due hangout by the fire pit. Excellent beer selection to stay or to go, all made with NYS local (hops). Plenty of space for a large group or grad a smaller table for an intimate drinking experience. This holiday season shop locally and drive over to Subversive for perfect gift giving ideas. read more

Pretty good spot. They make the most of the plot of land they have with outdoor seating with fire pits, a heated tent, and some seating indoors. I tried the porter, and it was good. Nothing special, but good. They do have a food menu. Definitely, the best thing is the burger, in my opinion. I tried a bunch of different things. Stay away from the Gruyère Brussel sprouts. They are just under roasted Brussel sprouts with a plop of cheese on top that congeals into a blob. Not very appetizing. The burger was good though. I found the bartenders to be very surly. There was no warm greeting, no assistance with any beers, and that did change my opinion of the place. It would be way better if it was a warm and inviting atmosphere. read more

Food: I had the bacon cheeseburger and the French fries. The burger was cooked well, a little to greasy for me and the rook was hard on the bottom and I almost choked on a piece. The French fries I could make in my oven, nothing new. Service: the service was very quick and pleasant. Ambiance: Not so much. Now I realize it hasn't been open to long but a paint job, nice fencing along the back would be nice. A few too many plants make it a great spot for flies, bees etc. a little better menu with more choices, a paint job and a bug zapper might be nice. read more

Amazing little brewery that we found after hiking in the area. There is really a beverage here for everyone. I had the pub ale and Field Feast which were both 10/10. My wife enjoyed the black currant sour and the Heritage Grape Ale - also a 10/10. There is such beautiful and abundant outdoor space which is perfect for groups or a date. There is also a couple of tables inside. When we went we sat outside and a small band was playing which was lovely. We also ordered food to go which was perfection, so perfect in fact we forgot to take photos of it because it was so delicious! We got an impossible burger and a regular burger, both with mushrooms and Swiss, side salads, and fries with two dipping sauces, BBQ sauce and garlic aioli. I really enjoy the vibe of this brewery. It is built in an old garage and has nice outdoor and indoor seating. Of course I understand that people go to breweries to enjoy their beer or IPAs, but this brewery has a rather limited selection of non-beer/IPA alcoholic drink options. That being said, their moscow mule is very tasty. Their food is actually the star of the show for me. Their french fries are tasty and they have a good selection of sauces, many of which are quite unique. Their chicken sandwich is incredibly good and is very filling. Highly recommend this brewery for a night out with friends or even for a casual family dinner. read more

Cute brewery with good service and good food. The actual beer was ok. Not the best but decent. We had a chicken sandwich which was very good. Deducting points for the interior. Not the airiest/prettiest. Indoors had no AC(it was open to outside) and because they had a tent over outdoor sitting it was pretty hot and stuffy outside too. However I would come back for lunch when it's not too hot out. read more

Cool little beer cafe in the heart of Catskill. They have about 6-7 of their own beers on tap and the two IPAs I had were delicious. Be careful of their Double IPA because it packs a punch at 8% abv. They allow outside food but we were only here for drinks. Decor is interesting ranging from hipster to some interesting but eclectic wild animal heads and hooves. Yes, not a typo. Some couch seating as well as a few high tops. The bar itself has diner style fixed stool with rotating tops which while nostalgic, weren't super comfy so we chose the high tops. A shuffleboard table added to the fun and other board games were available. Clean and neat bathroom. Located on Main Street with limited outdoor seating available. Crowd was mostly hipster and very friendly. I understand this brewery is growing and plan to increase their footprint in Catskill. Tasty beers will help them grow. Their website says they are kid friendly until 8pm when they go to 21+. Peanuts in the shell are free and abundant. Worth checking out. read more

Subversive brewing is a little gem hidden in the heart of the Hudson Valley! We love the beer here - clearly they know how to brew complex and tasty beers- my fav was a sour ipa (I think that's what is was) very very good The ambiance- I tell everyone about this cute place - love the fire places, love the black dramatic feel and twinkle lights! The food - more to be desired considering the caliber of beer produced here.. we ordered 2 different burgers - in honesty they were sad and very, very salty - we like salt but these were too salty .. it was a bun, and a patty -no tomatoes, lettuce no mayo - no presantation one of the sauces we added on the side (paid for) was worse, extremely salty we dipped a couple of times and pushed that to the side We will return for the beer but will likely pass on the food read more

We scored the last parking spot in the lot directly outside the brewery. The outdoor patio was inviting with lighting greenery and logo displays on the facada. There was a ton of seating available with many fire pits and adirondack chairs. The tent had several tables and was warm on a chilly evening. The bartender answered my questions about the floor malting and even let me peak at the malting floor. I like the small drink portions and it allowed me to try the Kolsch and Sour. I recommended ordering the Mushroom Swiss burger with fries, it was crack. Tons of flavor, nice bun and plenty of sauteed mushrooms. We took home two 4 packs from the cooler which was well stocked with 6 varieties to go. The prices are also very reasonable for a craft micro brewery. Five stars all the way. read more
