I'm sure lots of the sandwiches here are delicious. The turkey avocado panini is decidedly not one of them.

SubsConscious is by far one of the best local delis in the Morningside Heights/Columbia University area. Their lines are long at lunchtime for a reason (and it's really not because their service is slow or anything--they're just really popular). The sandwiches are yummy and affordable--the GPA and Final Exam are both great options for hot sandwiches and the Spring Chicken is good if you're feeling something cold. Moreover, Subs is open 24 hours, making it a great place for a late night snack--chips, muffins, cookies, hamburgers, fries, fruit, they've got it all! Ordered from this place on UberEATS the food was absolutely terrible and had to be thrown in the garbage as it was not edible. The order was for three people and no one was satisfied with there food. The quality was poor as well as the taste. We were also missing food items. Breakfast food is easy and it is terrible that they ruined it. We ordered pancakes which was supposed to come with eggs and sausage but those items were missing , corn beef hash with scrambled eggs, and a sausage omelette with home fries. I've been there daily for almost 5 years. The status of this restaurant is getting worse, much worse than before. The price raised so much. One day, they changed the menu, removed some of the options. The prices of other options get higher. Some of my favourite options are removed. Luckily, they retained one option with an acceptable price, so I continued with that. However, later they refused to make that option on a roll, only on a higher-priced sub. The fruit options are also more expensive. I remember that one box of melon was around or less than 3, and now it's around 4. Sometimes the melon inside smells and tastes bad. Sometimes it's overdue. The quality of the cakes has not changed much, but the price also climbed. All these happens after a certain time. It is rumored that they changed the manager. They hired so many new staffs recently, and the quality of sandwiches made by the new staffs vary greatly. read more

Not sure why this place has a 3* rating. In my opinion, these are the best bagels in NYC. Their breakfast sandwiches are incredible, and so cheap! The fact that this place is open 247 and I could get a breakfast sandwich at midnight was the best. I used to bring all my out of town guests here when i lived in the apartment next door and everyone loved it. They have an insane amount of cream cheese options too, my personal favorite is the sun dried tomato one. i was recently discussing subsconscious with a friend who still lives in the area, and he mentioned that the GPA sandwich is pretty damn awesome, so I gotta come back and try that. read more

RE:140TH ST. LOCATION While the food is ok, the service -- or lack thereof -- makes this place one to avoid. I've been there a number of times and the staff seems to get ruder and less professional each time. If they think this type of practice is going to help keep them in business as more and more options open up in the neighborhood, they're surely mistaken. Some of the other reviews make me shudder... but here is mine. Not biased, scouts honor. I was slightly overwhelmed by the naming of their sandiwches, hot or cold, aren't they really the same kind of sammich? I guess it might be subliminal marketing concept brewed up by the owner. Same comment for the name of establishment. LUL. After studying the menu, ordered my Fuggetabouit hot pastrami with melted cheesed, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato and mustard on a sub. yum. It was actually pretty good. I wasn't too thrilled with the texture (nor the look) of squished, warmed up lettuce. Still, the sammich was just fine. I think their lunch combo meals (-$1.50) is a good deal including a drink and a bag of chips. Goes easy on the wallet. I found that the kitchen folks were super helpful and expedited the orders as fast as they could. I don't have much to say about the register folks as it was a quick hand card over, swipe card, and ask for receipt transaction. I wasn't too thrilled that of the two registers only one was working (I don't know why) but I wouldn't say that they were rude or offended me by any means. The space is a bit cramped inside, but I like that there is a variety of options. A deli is a deli, and with many other options nearby, it was nice to check SubsConscious out to see if they match up to the competition. I used to like this place, and after an absence of 8 mos, returned recently for a sandwich. It was a sad experience: huge white roll (clearly 80-90% of what I was eating was just white bread), and the insides (chicken salad and avocado and lettuce) ended up falling out all over the place because I couldn't get my mouth around this enormous bread-y sandwich (I am an adult). The sandwich looked impressive and thus worth the $9 or so it cost, but it was not a satisfactory experience to consume it.... just way too much bread. And the soup, chicken noodle, had really over-cooked noodles: my guess is that the soup sits there heated for hours and hours (maybe even days and days) so everything in the soup -- vegs, noodles -- is just cooked to a soft mass. Maybe some people like it that way. There are much better food options nearby. read more

I'm pretty sure I get food from here at least 2x a week, given that I live nearby and I'm on a student budget. It's all pretty standard sandwich shop fare, but I do like their rewards card (10 purchases and your 11th purchase up to $11 is free), their fresh salads, and their chicken dumpling soup. As for the packaged snacks they have, steer clear of the SMART FRIES. SO GROSS. They taste like styrofoam. read more

The guys that makes the salads and sandwiches are incredibly kind usually and for some reason treat me especially well because I am a vegetarian. I think they assume I'm starving, and most of the time I am if I'm there so it's okay. They give me free cheese and stuff like that. They remember me so that when I ask about soup they tell me off the bat "they all have meat." I like that. They get 5 stars. The ladies at the front get 3 stars. I went in once and an employee named Rene immediately began aggressively flirting with me at a level that is absolutely inappropriate and unprofessional for a customer service worker to engage in with a customer--if I was his manager and I had witnessed this, I would have fired him on the spot for sexual harassing a customer. This made me so uncomfortable that I haven't gone in since, even though I live very nearby and often need a quick dinner. I later emailed the manager to inform them of this incident and never got a response. The mixed set of reviews is deserved. I wish their menu was a bit less...jargony. Too many words don't make me want to struggle through trying to figure out the difference between "The Graduate" and "The Novice," or whatever. Maybe it's a point of appeal for some people, I don't know. I'm pretty literary but I end up just giving up and ordering either based on my own personal preferences or ordering something on display. But beware, for some things you can see the icky crust of time forming on some of the cream cheeses and prepackaged sandwiches. I have heard that the best thing to get here is the salads, so I say do that. The food is merely functional, and sometimes delicious. The food is decent here. It's a good place to go as a student who doesn't want to travel far and the food is fairly quick although it's busy. The choices are overwhelming, but the subs I've had were pretty good. However, on more than 1 occasion the women at the counter were very rude. The service is at best mediocre and have never once had friendly service. They obviously hate their lives, but to take it out on their customers is just unprofessional and wrong. It's shocking how poor service can impact a restaurant's reputation so greatly. Food is decent. I'd recommend any bagel w/ cream cheese and the Ivy League sub. However, don't expect any smiles at this joint. The service here is unbelievably bad. I've visited both this location and the one on Broadway, and I've found the service at the Broadway location to be much better. But for the most part the staff at the Amsterdam location are some of the rudest mofos that I've ever experienced in New York, which I'm sure they would take as a compliment. The salads are actually not bad, but the sandwiches are terrible. The sandwiches are basically the same as Apple Tree (across the street), where they seem ok at first but then you realize they all taste pretty much the same. It's a flavor you get very tired of very quickly. My main objection to this place is the service. The women who work as cashiers during the day are probably the most rude and just plain mean clerks I've ever seen. I've had them throw my credit card back at me (and I don't mean a toss back to me) after they were done charging me. I once watched them mock a customer because she accidentally gave incorrect change when trying to give exact cash. Sometimes they argue with each other, and instead of serving customers they just shout loudly at each other and ignore their job until they feel like getting back to work. They respond to questions like you're not worth talking to. They must be related to the owner or something, because it makes no sense how they don't get fired. Today was the second time I visited SubsConscious. The first time I was pleased with the food, everything came out correctly and the sandwich was good. Nothing was spectacular but all good. Today however I came in behind a woman who had had her sandwich given to her completely incorrectly, and also uncooked. My experience was very similar. I ordered a Pastrami Salami and asked for NO mustard but for russian dressing on the sandwich instead. For my free soup I requested chicken noodle soup, and for dessert I ordered a chocolate cupcake. All three items were incorrect. My sandwich had mustard on it as well as some brownish/clear dressing that looked maybe like french dip? The soup was cream of broccoli not chicken noodle, and the chocolate cupcake was red velvet with cream cheese frosting. I've never had so many parts of a meal messed up, and to be clear it was also a 20 minute wait although the store only had about 5 patrons buying and ordering meals. read more

Seriously, i think this place has a bad avg rating because 1) the sheer number of menu items that might not taste great and (2) the service. If you can deal with no one offering the expected fake smile and if you have the time to try out different subs until you find your favorites, this place is a friggen gem. And open 24/7? I've been having their lunch special subs for lunch for a while now and there's a reason why I keep going back! Their subs are big and if you get the lunch special subs, they're only 5 bucks each! That's a pretty good deal. If you get the frequent customer card too, you buy 10 subs and get one free. This is a great breakfast spot and has a very diverse selection. Yummy plentiful breakfast platters filled with bacon and french toast await, and enticing red velvet and cappuccino cupcakes are good for an indulgent snack. It's a convenient location to pick up a nicely made fruit bowl or customized salad or smoothie when you are feeling in the health nut mood too.
