Also gave me spoiled cucumbers. Claimed it was the salad dressing that made the cucumbers turn clear and sour. I went over to show them in oerson the disgusting raw chicken and rotten cucumbers. The manager claimed the cucumbers were fresh. Smh. GRubhub gave me a refund and they offered to make a new salad but I don't trust them. I am not sure why the mamager hired inexperienced people in the kitchen who don't know how to cook. She also said she can't fire him because he is sick also that another cool usually handles the chicken. Smh. It was a circus. They were defensive and instead of apologizing that they possibly gave me food poisoning and will cover medical bills, they washed their hands off. Stop by for a quick bite and was surprised by there extensive menu! They have so many sandwich options but I settled on a classic the cheesesteak. The meat was nice and thin and they put a decent amount of provolone. They also add an aioli which im generally not a fan of but it was really tasty in the sandwich. Simple sandwich shop with delicious options. This is a pretty in and out type of sandwich and soup shop. There is a small dining area that has about 4 or 5 tables. During my vist, I ordered the Final Exam, which was a greasy nirvana (a good thing). Also, I have ordered food for catering events, and for the most part, the food was delivered on time. The food is well labeled so people from my event were able to easily identify what they ordered. The price of there food is pretty reasonable - most of the sandwiches come with a soup. If you consider the neighborhood and all the surrounding places for food, it's a good spot in comparison. Otherwise, it would be run of the mill if you compared it to say your local bodega or deli for sandwiches, especially when you take into consideration price. Like I said, location is the big key. They have a 10% discount if you're CU affiliated and they throw in a free soup if you order one of their sandwiches. I think they threw in some of these perks cause they're not as closeby as their competitor, Apple Tree. I ordered the Double Trouble, which was good. The steak and turkey were tasty. The minestrone soup they threw in was okay. Nothing to write home about but you can't really complain if it's free. All in all, a fairly decent spot. It wasn't so strong and bitt that it hurt my stomach and it wasn't sour either. Just the coffee I want. The breakfast set came in an aluminum tray with a lid, so I can take it out if I wanted to. The portion was small, so I ended up eating breakfast at the SubsConsious. After taking my order, they came by a few minutes later to hand me a napkin, fork, salt packet, pepper packet, and ketchup. There were two slices of hashed browns and they were so crispy! That was my favorite part of the dish. The egg lacked flavor, so I squeezed a reasonable amount of ketchup over it. The toasts were good too because they slabbed it over with butter. It was crispy too. In the end, it filled me up and I was quite content with the taste. read more

Clean deli/subs very close to Columbia University Computer Sciences building. I enjoy the walk along the street on a beautiful day and decided to stop here for s sun and grab some water. The place is clean and the workers are friendly. They have very limited seating against the walls and two small tables behind the end counter in the back. Columbia Univ students can show their ID to get 10%. I ordered the turkey sub and a bottle of water. It came out to be close to $10. The sandwich was rather disappointing fir me as the bread is just way too soft. It should be a bit crunchy on the outside texture. The had too much vinegar for me. When I first walked in, I was caught by surprise by how many choices there are. I don't know how it is even possible. But then I quickly realized that the differences are rather minor. The line gets super long during lunch and dinner hours so be patient! They do try to make sandwiches as quickly as possible. I ordered "Double Trouble" and it was okay! So close to work, so far from perfection! So much better than nearby Appletree market for salads/sandwiches/prices. This spot is just up the block from my office, and when the lines aren't out of control, not a bad place to grab a salad or a sandwich. There's a hot line, pre-made sandwiches, salad bar and assorted chips, pastries and beverages. The lines can be really egregious, so I'd recommend getting here earlier or slightly after midday (e.g. 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. and beyond). Otherwise you'll be standing here until your next birthday trying to order. The sandwiches are underwhelming, but unlike nearby Appletree they'll at least remember to include every ingredient you've requested on your sandwich. Salad bar frequently runs out of dried cranberries, which I take personally. Nothing to write home about, but always here for me when I'm hungry. How do you mess up egg salad?! The one and only time I got a sandwich from here and after one bite it went into the trash. SubsConscious place is good for pre-packages snacks; e.g. chips, chocolate bars, etc. However when it comes to hot food they somehow always seem to make mistakes. I used to order my bagel sandwiches from here in the morning but after all three times I got calls because there were changes to my order, I called it quits. The first time they ran out of peach rings so sent some peanut m&ms, the second time they ran out of everything bagels so sent my order on a plain one, and the last time they again ran out of everything bagels so sent my order on an onion one. Not to mention that the delivery took forever when they are only three blocks away from my apartment! Yep, I'll only be back here for pre-packaged food and drink items. read more

I'm not a big fan of this place. The subs both hot and cold really don't taste all that great. Basically they taste like nothing. The salads are OK. The lettuce used on sandwiches is pretty awful, it's way too thick and abundant. I'm also not very happy with the staff. I get lunch here about once every other week, and since I've sort of settled into getting the same sandwich every time (the Lecture), I'm always satisfied. One of my labmates also has his go-to sandwich, so I assume they're doing at least a few things right. The prices are a bit high for simple sandwiches, but they're big and filling. I wish they'd take credit card for orders under $8 so that I could try some of the cheaper sandwiches, but I just hate paying cash that much. They have a buy 10 get 1 free reward program which has been surprisingly effective for me. They have a $5 lunch special for certain sandwiches depending on the day of the week from 12 to 3 (?), which is a great deal, but unfortunately I always go before that time to avoid the rush, so haven't tried most of them. read more

This is my go-to lunch spot when I have class once a week. It's a small space that gets really packed because it's filled with Columbia's law school, social work, SIPA, journalism, and teacher's college students. There are three lines- one to order sandwiches/grill items, one for the salad orders, and the line to pay. The sandwiches are massive and delicious. The salads are made-to-order so they're always great and they put in SO MUCH PROTEIN, it's actually crazy. Plus the prices are amazing. I used to go to Apple Tree Market a block away and the salads were mediocre and they'd skimp out on ingredients but would charge me a few dollars more than Subsconscous. Shoutout to the guys that work the salad and sandwich station. Even during the lunchtime rush they're always smiling and friendly. Not to mention they make some meannnnnnnnn lunches. read more

Stopped here for lunch before picking my daughter up from school. There was no other customers at the time so I took my time to look through all the sandwiches and picked a steak, onions, bacon, and cheddar sub. The roll was very fresh and light. The ingredients were high quality with plenty of everything. Quite yummy and a good size. The staff was friendly and treated me very well. I'd like to eat my way through the menu-very unique sandwiches and many choices. Lots of sides to choose from-I got kettle chips! And plenty of drinks-they had Stewart's diet orange and cream soda! They also have some yummy looking desserts-giant cupcakes ready for takeout and slices of chocolate cake to name a couple. I don't wanna share my email address but they asked me for many times, I just don't understand why a local bagel shop needs to do email campaign. I don't wanna eat the ham wrap again, because it has been there for several days and they still sell it to me. I don't think they trust me because when I answered the cashier there's one egg in the bagel, she still reassure it with the guy who hand the bagel to her. And when I wanna pay by card, the cashier asked me if I have cash, it's understandable, but could you please have a sign to tell us "no credit under xxx dollars"? That will look more professional. I know they are too busy, but they have forgotten to add ketchup for many times, and they cannot hear clearly what I asked for, I didn't know they forgot to add bacon, but I thought it has bacon, so I pay more money than what it really costs. But, even if I ordered correctly, their price is still higher than others... I never knew what it was for a restaurant to deserve a 1-star Yelp review until I had this experience at SubsConscious. My apologies to all the other restaurants to which I've given 1 star in the past. At least the food I ate from your establishments did not have rodent poop in it. Yeah, rodent poop. I regret to have to write this review, because the kitchen staff at SubsConscious are friendly, efficient, honest, and possibly the hardest-working people in Manhattan. However, it is one thing to have good service, another to let hygiene go to hell. I purchased my usual custom lunch salad with mesclun greens, mandarin oranges, goat cheese, walnuts, and balsamic vinaigrette. I noticed while the guy was preparing the salad that the open aluminum container in which they keep the walnuts was almost empty. I got back to my office and munched on my salad. It was only at the end that I noticed some grapeseed-sized black things at the bottom of the bowl. When I squeezed them between a napkin, they turned into brown paste. Let me tell you: the moment you realize you've just feasted on feces is a shitty one. I've had to deal with mice before, and know exactly what the droppings look like - i.e., identical to the stuff in my salad. And mice looove walnuts. While the SubsConscious chefs are away, the culprits must sneak in and feast on the nuts to their heart's content (probably at night). In exchange, they leave their turds. I called the manager, who was defiant. I then took time out of my workday to go back there and show him the stuff. He had no alternative explanation but adamantly denied that the unsolicited garnish was mouse manure. (How could he admit it? He'd have to shut down his restaurant!) So, I did my part as a citizen and reported the incident to NYC Dept of Health. I'm now reporting it to the Yelp Community so you can avoid a similar situation. If you don't skip the restaurant, skip the walnuts. read more

The new management is taking Subsconscious downhill, and fast. The prices have skyrocketed while the quality has become atrocious. I ordered a Final Exam sub a week ago (after spending about 10 minutes on the phone with a cashier who couldn't get it together and kept getting my order wrong), and what arrived was a dry sub with stingy portions of all the ingredients. For a nearly $9 sub, that's unacceptable. Their French fries are now TERRIBLE. While they've introduced some nice new dipping sauces, I can't dip the fries because they are soggy and limp. Not because of the delivery time, but because they were prepared by someone who doesn't understand the concept of how to fry food properly. While the new wraps sound appetizing, they come out as an unappetizing, mono-color blob of goopy chicken/peppers/tomato filling wrapped in a very small tortilla. Most wraps now cost $10 instead of the $6.50 price tag just a few months ago. A couple of other things: - What in the world happened to the awesome bacon bits that used to be on the salad bar? They have been replaced with old shards of bacon that taste several days old. The new brand of croutons is similarly unappetizing. All of these changes have limited my food options here to the subs and wraps, which themselves seem to have become quite unappetizing as well. -Lastly, ordering delivery has become a nightmare. Whereas it used to take about 20-30 minutes to deliver my food literally two streets away, the average wait time has skyrocketed to 75 minutes. Recently, one of the deliverymen asked me for more than the $2 tip that I gave him, after arriving 1 and a HALF hours after I placed my order of a sandwich and a soda. I was shocked as this has never happened in my 2 years of ordering from here, and will no longer order delivery from Subsconscious again. If the other non-delivery-related issues continue, I not order from here again in any way shape or form. To whoever took over this place: you are trying to fix something that was never broken to begin with. The food has become sub-par in flavor, the selection has declined, the ingredients have dropped in quality...but the prices keep on rising. The place isn't even open 24 hours anymore, for goodness sake. And last but certainly not least, the delivery guys are obviously overworked and unhappy, because I've never been solicited for an extra tip, ever...until recently. Something has to change. I don't expect sandwich delis to be super clean, but come on, when some body's watching you make a sandwich, you should have at least some sort of sense about what to touch and what not to touch while you're making a sub. this lady touches a grease-smeared ingredient sheet, the back of her pants, once her underarms (she was wearing a sleeveless shirt... I wanted to faint), her hair, the dirty floor, and the dirty cloth that the sandwich people use for multiple purposes while she's making a sandwich. She sometimes makes the girls at the cashier come and help her out, which is also gross since the girls have been touching money with their bare hands all day and doesn't even bother to wash their hands or put some gloves on while touching and pressing down on the ingredients. (yuck) enough said, once you see the disgruntled lady at the deli, just forget about a sandwich and try again the next day when the guys are there. The food is the best of the local neighborhood delis, and the prices are extremely reasonable: $5.75 cheeseburger platter; $4.50 for french toast and sausage; $5.50 for a triple-decker club sandwich. The only way this place isn't five stars is if you are comparing it to midtown delis that charge more than double. But once I tried their meat options, particularly the GPA and Final Exam, that's when I was sold on how great this place is. SUCKS!!! Subconscious has changed their menu. They've added seating. They've taken most of the Panini's out of there display case. They used to be the best sandwich shop north of Katz's. The restaurant now sucks! The main reason it sucks for me is that they took both my sandwich and my back up sandwich off the menu. I used to come all the way uptown just to get their Cuban sandwich. It's gone. They don't even have an Italian cold cut sandwich anymore, which is the other sandwich there that I like to eat. They've taken about two thirds of the things that they served off of the menu. They've also cut down on their non-sandwich offerings. They don't even offer as many varieties of soda as they used to, and they sell those in bottles. The results seem pretty telling: it used to be 10 people deep at the counter to order a sandwich before they changed the menu. Now the place is mostly empty. For the past two years, Hamilton Deli was my go-to place for sandwiches, burgers, salads, and food on-the-go. But then I found this place. The sandwiches are inventive and stuffed to the brim in the best of ways, and you can easily get two meals out of one sandwich. Particularly love the Final Exam sub, which comes with Philly steak, cheese, green peppers, mayo, and ~a fried egg~. Creamy, melty, and perfectly greasy. But that egg is what really ties everything together into a delicious meal. Dat egg. Recently also tried the Nuclear sub. A sure favorite for people who love all things spicy. Philly steak, a bunch of different peppers, and a ton of hot sauce. The spicy mustard was a bit much and gave a slight an off taste. But that didn't keep me from finishing this still-awesome sandwich. The CC Blue was the heaviest of all the sandwiches that I've tried here. Wouldn't order this particular one again as it was just a bit too much - ham, chicken, swiss, tomato, lettuce, and plenty, plenty of overpowering bleu cheese dressing - but that is just a personal preference. Salads are standard fare with different mix-in options, but given a choice between Subs and HamDel, I would go with Subs as the ingredients seem a little fresher and the options more diverse.
