This is the #25. Tons of meat.

There's a handful of these in central and eastern Iowa. The original guy who opened these came from Atlantic City, where some believe subs were born. Nothing was lost in the translation. You get freshly sliced meats that are commonly weighed on a scale to make sure you get enough. Freshly baked bread. A host of different toppings and enough sandwich combinations (even a vegetarian friendly cheese combo) that anyone can find something to eat. There's a couple of hot sandwiches as well; a meatball and I believe a shredded BBQ pork, but I've never tried it. Also, I've never done it, but I've seen other people sub out a meat or cheese for another without issue. Drinks are only 90¢ and $1.10 for rather large cups. They also offer some salads such as macaroni salad and Oreo fluff on a daily basis. The large sandwiches are only about $8-$8.50 on average, and most halves around $4-$4.50. Forget Subway and Jimmy Johns; more restaurants like this are needed. Only con is they do not accept credit/debit cards. The sandwiches are good enough to forgive this. Just remember your checkbook or wallet.

Awesome walk through sandwich ordering watching as they hand cut and build our sandwiches, having a whole Downtown special!!

Last time I was there I got a half sub (bout the size of a footlong at subway) a drink, a t-shirt (yeah I did) and gave the guy a tip and still only paid $15.

Once you order, you might be waiting a little longer than you do at a typical fast food joint because everything is cooked to order. There is a veggie burger, too, if that is your desire. The menu is a bit sparse but covers most of the bases with burgers, hot dogs and a hand-breaded tenderloin. There is also barbecue pulled pork, chicken strips, and chicken sandwiches. There's also an array of grilled cheese with variations. Variations? Can you improve upon the basic grilled cheese sammich? Sure! Add bacon and tomato. Bacon? Sure! Everything is better with bacon! That's what I ordered, it was ooey-gooey as a grilled cheese should be, and the bacon and tomato just added to the experience! Deserts? Of course! Choose from sundaes or, as in my case, a milkshake or malt. I opted for a raspberry malt, which was thick and tasty, but thin enough to pull through a straw. (Unlike a certain fast-food joint where you can hold a malt upside down and it won't budge. Don't try that at Murph's!) I don't get this way very often, but next time I'm in the twin cities of Tama and Toledo, I'll be stopping back here.
