This is a family favorite place. We love to stop here when we are traveling. It gives off old world nostalgia of a classic pizza parlor with a cozy home vibe. The food is delicious! They are famous for their taco pizza, which I happily ordered. My family also ordered the Bavarian and said that they truly enjoyed it. What's also wonderful is that they have gluten free crust available, which is perfect as one of my family members has a severe gluten allergy. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and seated quickly. It did take a little bit before our server came to take our order. After that, however, the service was excellent and our server was just lovely. The food came out hot and timely and overall we just had a relaxing meal. It was just what we needed! Ordered takeout 14 minutes before closing, as we were staying nearby and got in later. Pizza was done right at closing time and we didn't feel that they were put out with the late order. We regularly visit Zeno's as a central meeting place with family all across Iowa! While it's on the town square, it has a small town feel. They always have plenty of seating available for both small and large groups. They are great at accommodating everyone's needs. We like to order cheese bread and taco pizza. I am from the original town of the taco pizza, so I don't think it's the #1 I've ever had, but it's pretty good! We will continue to visit for years to come. read more

I have never had such a rude server in all my years of traveling weather for pleasure or business. One of the people I was with asked for an additional Parmesan shaker since there was nine of us at the table, and the male server abruptly said no one per table. Next the pizza was absolutely disgusting. It was greasy, very few vegetables on the veggie pizza and it tasted like cardboard. They should take lessons from Casey's!! Spending over $55.00 on disgusting pizza is absured! And last If you have an emergency exit door you need to clearly label it per the fire code! Shame on the town for not sending inspectors out & enforcing this safety issue. WI'll I ever go in there again when I'm visiting family no way! Have eaten pizza at Zeno's since my youth. It is still amazing, the pizza is great and still independent! Pretty cool. All the combo I have had I would recommend except the Beef Brisket Bar B Q. The servers are what you expect from wonderful midwesterners. Pleasant, efficient and always a smile. So glad the tornado damage was minimal and hope the main front sign is lit again soon. read more

A Marshalltown classic. My mom used to work here back in the day, and we always have to snag a pie when we are in town. Zeno's is a bit on the pricey side when it comes to a pie. The crust is thin and crunchy. The combinations are to-die-for. Spend a little extra dough to support a local joint that has been a staple in small-town Iowa. You won't be disappointed. Zeno's Pizza has been around 70 years and has been my favorite since I was a little girl!! It is the gold standard!! My niece Addison, 7 yrs old now, agrees it is 5 stars!! The crust is nice, thin and crispy!! The sauce is a thick, robust tomato paste, and the cheese is part provolone mozzarella mix greasy goodness!! Yes!... This pizza is greasy!... Grease my gracious, the grease was all over the place! I was here about 14 months ago and rated this place a 5 star. Tonight I stopped in for a Zeno's special and I battled grease dripping from my fingers and what a mess! First ate here 50 years ago and NEVER had this problem! I'm sorry but you need to do something about the grease. Could you blot it with paper towels like a great steakhouse does their frites? Wound up in Marshalltown for 2 weeks for business... This pizza place was highly recommended by co-workers from Marshalltown. I had pizza with their butter sauce (not red sauce) and added basil and tomatoes (Was craving bruschetta). Pizza was good, but certainly not the best I've had. I did like that the cheese went all the way to the edge of the crust or slightly over. Very thin crust and seemed to be store bought, but, crispy and tasty. Started our meal out with cheese garlic bread and half sausage/onion/pepper half chicken--er, that was gone just not off menu--pepperoni/pineapple pizza..after we asked for our silverware of course. One packaged container of marinara served with greasy cheese bread (it was edible, but no doubt greasiest cheese bread I've ever had). We carefully split the little container of marinara because we've not seen our server since taking order... Pizza came hot and wrong. Added mushrooms to sausage/onion/pepper side and wanted to take it all back when we told them it was wrong (my half was the pepperoni/pineapple..uh, no! I'm starving!). Manager told server she'd take 20% off....mind you, it's 8pm and we've now waited for 35minutes; we aren't waiting on another pizza! Server throws kitchen under bus. So, my husband picked mushrooms off a blazing hot couple of pieces. Drinks are out, not getting up to track server down again...time to go. Blonde at window smiles while saying 'sorry' when she asks how our food was and doesn't get a textbook answer further irritating the situation. Dark/outdated/odd smelling bathrooms/overuse of table cleaner (when we are right there?!?). Won't be back. read more

I'd like to put a pizza on layaway... Things change, and not always for the better. Been eating here since the 1970s and visit every time I've been home since the 1990s. Seems Terry sold the business as none of his kids were able to run it or wanted to. Prices for pizza reflect that royalties for the "recipe" that was part of the deal. That results in $30 pizzas which is insane. Now I have two categories for pizza: fast food and real pizza. Obviously this isn't fast food pizza (pizza hut, dominoes, etc.) but it also isn't quite as good as it once was, despite having purchased "the recipe." Service was amazingly bad on my visit. Felt like I was in a self serve buffet. For some reason they were playing some 80s sounding punk rock nonsense a little louder than it needed to be. So to recap...subpar pizza, horrible service and sticker shock prices. It's sad what has become of Zeno's as it was once one of my favorite places to eat. It's nowhere near authentic NY style pizza or anything like that, but it was good in it's day. That day just seems to be over. read more

Now, our new pizza joint will be Paglias in Grinnell. Cleanest restaurant, ever! Staff is impressive by being on top of your order and usually they are very busy but get food out hot and yummy! I have been coming to Zeno's with my wife's family for 15 years. It was a regular spot for her family growing up and we come eat here whenever we visit Iowa. Large groups are always accommodated and the pizza is consistent and memorable. Tonight our visit was somewhat diminished by the poor attitude of the host. When 7 of our party of 10 arrived we were told we would have to wait until all were present before they would seat us. Bear in mind this is a Wednesday afternoon in the middle of July - not exactly the peak traffic time for most restaurants. So after spending 10 minutes with hungry squirming kids in the tiny lobby we were able to convince them to seat us, but not without a lot of attitude from the host. The pizza was just like it always is, and our server was great, but the attitude from the host put a bit of a damper on the whole experience. I am no stranger to restaurant etiquette but this was not a reservation, it was not during peak hours and there was plenty of room in the dining area. read more

This is a Marshalltown institution and should not be passed up if coming to town and looking for food. Zeno's is situated in an old downtown building that has been there for ages. The interior is rustic and probably hasn't been changed since the 1960s. The do not have a full bar but they do have beer on tap. Drinks aren't what you come here for however, you come for the pizza, and this is some of the best around. For those who haven't had it before, Zeno's pizza tends to be a little greasier than most pizzas, so if you're a health nut, you may want to keep moving on. It's this slightly greasier pizza that makes Zeno's so outstanding. I personally love the canadian bacon/pineapple pizza however their supreme is also excellent. In all honesty you probably won't go wrong with any toppings you get. Be prepared to pay for this pizza however. I recently ordered for take out a large pineapple/canadian bacon and a side order of cheese bread and the bill was over $30. So, in closing, great pizza that can't be missed, but a little on the pricey side. That pretty much sums it up. read more

Hands-down the best pizza place I've ever been to. Ever. It was opened in the early 50's and is still family-owned (in fact, the owner greeted us at the door last Saturday night!). The place has a great atmosphere that remains unchanged from when it first opened but is still wonderfully maintained and clean. The service was super friendly and attentive (no empty sodas here!) and the pizza itself was just perfect. Zeno's only serves pizza, cheese bread (also fantastic!) and dinner/side salads and they definitely know what they're doing. I love pizza, of all varieties, and Zeno's makes a classic, greasy, crispy thin style pizza. Definitely one of my favorite types, but requires the toppings to be in a perfect balance so as to not overpower the dough (in weight and flavor). Zeno's wasn't the best of this type of pizza for a couple reasons. Zeno's did the one thing that really bothers me and my Dad: they put the cheese on top of the toppings. Perhaps it's an old school thing, but the cheese is the glue that you put toppings onto, just like glitter on a school project. With that said, the pizza was delicious. The toppings were all high quality, and besides having too much cheese, were in decent harmony. Overall, a pretty good pizza that hasn't changed much from how it was made in the 50's (according to my Dad). If you're ever in Marshalltown, IA I'd check it out. A Marshalltown icon. The pizza is very good. My only complaint is that it is a touch on the greasy side. You cannot go wrong with any of the options but the Taco pizza is by far a step above the rest. The service was very good, and atmosphere is casual. Decor is a touch lacking. At recommendation from a local, I tried this place for dinner one evening. Dining alone, it was not the most economical option ($14 for a small pizza, and I had no place to store leftovers), but the Mexican pizza I had was one of the best pizzas I have ever had. It reminded me of the traditional thin crust pizzas like they used to have at Shakees Pizza Parlor in Houston. Service was fine, and decor was interesting. There seems to be much history at this location, and you can tell it has been around awhile. Zeno's is certainly worth checking out, though not the cheapest bet if dining solo. read more

When we moved here her heard about Zeno's Pizza. I get that it's a local hang-out. What I don't get is what the rage is all about. I have tasted better frozen, day-old pizza than this. The super-thin crust was tasteless to us and we didn't care for the sauce either. Our teenage boys wern't impressed either. We went to Zenos after being told it was the "best pizza" in Iowa. It was incredibly overpriced, the decor was nonexistant (they put us in a big open room like a cafeteria) and the pizza was swimming in grease to the point of needing paper towels to soak it all up. I will not go back and I will not recommend Zenos to my friends until the ambiance justifies the price and they find ingredients that don't sweat grease. read more

Without a doubt, this was the worst dining experience we have had in a very long time. We grew up in Marshalltown and moved away many years ago. Since the Busby family bought and started managing this place it has totally gone down hill. The wait staff were about as rude and inconsiderate as can be, the cooks were sneezing in the kitchen, and our order was wrong. When we brought these things up the waitress just shrugged it off like it was business as usual. We will never dine at Zeno's Pizza in Marshalltown, Iowa again. read more
