There's a handful of these in central and eastern Iowa. The original guy who opened these came from Atlantic City, where some believe subs were born. Nothing was lost in the translation. You get freshly sliced meats that are commonly weighed on a scale to make sure you get enough. Freshly baked bread. A host of different toppings and enough sandwich combinations (even a vegetarian friendly cheese combo) that anyone can find something to eat. There's a couple of hot sandwiches as well; a meatball and I believe a shredded BBQ pork, but I've never tried it. Also, I've never done it, but I've seen other people sub out a meat or cheese for another without issue. Drinks are only 90¢ and $1.10 for rather large cups. They also offer some salads such as macaroni salad and Oreo fluff on a daily basis. The large sandwiches are only about $8-$8.50 on average, and most halves around $4-$4.50. Forget Subway and Jimmy Johns; more restaurants like this are needed. Only con is they do not accept credit/debit cards. The sandwiches are good enough to forgive this. Excellent subs! I love that they cut the meats and cheeses right in front of you as you order. Good prices, but make sure you have cash $$ they don't take cards! I recommend ordering your sandwich with "the works" - very tasty. I ordered a half sub, and I'm glad I did. It is thicker and wider than a subway six-inch. I would say its closer to a footlong volume wise. The whole sub from sub city is just HUGE. Two of my coworkers thought they could tackle it and ended up taking a half of it home. My husband and I were in town for a nephew's baseball game, so we turned to Yelp for some suggestions. This popped up and with the positive reviews, we thought we would give it a try, we also recalled some friends suggesting this place. We both liked it, but we didn't understand what the hype was about. Yes, they slice meat in front of you and put on toppings like any other deli, but the flavor wasn't amazing or anything about the experience that really made either of want to come back. The service was ok. We weren't greeted with any super friendly anything special (not even our known Midwest friendliness). On top of this, my husband saw noted in small print on the menu that they only took cash. So, we decided to order to go and get cash to come back. We were next in line and the guy slicing/taking orders? wasn't really helpful nor friendly. We were newbies and didn't understand that we needed to go to the end of the counter to get our order in. Hey, if this is your thing, great! We really didn't see the difference between this and Subway (and neither of us get excited about Subway either). You can get oil and vinegar and oregano at other places too. If this truly was a New Jersey style deli, than they would have Boar's Head meat on their sandwiches (that is quality). It should be difficult to ever make a bad sandwich -- meat, cheese, and veggies between bread. Simple. Yet, many sandwich shops fail. There is night and day difference in sandwiches from cheap franchises to expensive "gourmet" sandwich shops... and often I think the cheap places are better. Sub City impressed me for the value for the money. The "small" sandwich was huge, and many choices were available. It reminded me of Manhattan Deli in Des Moines, but I think I liked the openness of this location better. Was this combination of meat and bread better than similar stuff at Subway or Quiznos? It seemed to be. When given the choice, I have no reason to go to any of the franchise sandwich shops in Marshalltown. The price was similar, and the portions were generous. No complaints. This is the best sandwich shop I have ever found! Everything is so incredibly fresh and prepared as you order. The sweet nutty flavor of the wheat roll is a memory I can't escape. The creamy mayo next to the vinegary dressing on the just sliced provolone, oh my! I haven't been to Marshalltown in over 14 years, but this is still the sandwich against which I judge all other sandwiches. I am so glad to see this place is still open and making others happy and full! Not only have I craved sub city sandwiches since I first had one a few months ago, but they are the cheapest I've been to. My family LOVES #25!!!!! We love the fresh bread. We watch as the meat is freshly sliced. Always fresh ingredients. Very reasonably priced. I usually order two of them to take home so I have one for the next day. I told the "guys behind the counter" my daughter lives in Texas and she misses #25. They said they have shipped their sandwiches out of state. I have also ordered an assortment of subs and taken them home to serve at my Bridge Club. I have the women hooked on #25 now. Now first impressions, when I walked up to this place I was oh man this place looks like a shite hole, but I decided to go in due to yelp's 5 star rating by 3 people. Inside this place was cold. It was winter but dang it felt like 60 deg in there so I took the sub to go. To me the sub was slightly better than a Goodcents or Subway with double meat except for one thing way bigger for the dollar! I can't recommend getting off the highway and driving to the middle of the town to get this but if your in town go there it is a decent sub. This is a Marshalltown staple just like Zeno's and Taylor's. I happen to work within spitting distance so I visit on a fairly frequent basis. The bottom line here is there is no better value sandwich for your dollar in town...period. Since I have what the doctor calls "a little bit of a weight problem" I'm a fan of their "Sub in a Tub" which is basically a sandwich without the bread...a.k.a. a salad. I still enjoy porking out on a carb loaded 1/2 #23 on wheat with pepperjack instead of provolone on occasion though. Sub City is a no-frills straight up sandwich shop. If you are from out of town, you need to visit Sub City. They make the subs fresh right there in front of you. Not like subway fresh but like, slice the meat as you order type fresh. They don't skimp on the toppings and being that they about double the size of a subway sub, they are exceptionally priced...$7-$8 for a foot long that you will most likely have to save some for later. You will always find a line here during lunch and dinner times but it moves fast and is extremely well worth it. #25 is my favorite on a garlic herb wrap accompanied by the Sweet hot pepper sauce. I can't argue with all the 5 star ratings here. Sub City is ridiculously good! First off, the sandwiches are huge. I made the mistake of ordering the full just for the heck of it. Needless to say I had enough there for that days lunch and the next. Seriously their full sandwich is about 18" long and about 5-6 inches wide. Nothing compared to Subway or Jimmy John's. Next, the meats and cheeses are sliced fresh right in front of your eyes. Nothing is pre-portioned like other sub joints. You get to watch them grab each block of cured meat from the fridge and thrown on the slicer. Add on the works for toppings and have them spread some of their home made pepper relish on it and you have a masterfully crafted submarine sandwich to be proud of. The only downfall of the place is that they don't take credit/debit cards. It's hard to find places like this that take the time to do everything right. read more
