Ate at Tremont on Main Friday night! The food was soo good! The ambience was excellent! Had the early bird special- salmon fillet- delicious, crispy on edges, side had quartered red potatoes- excellent taste, vegetables- not into those varieties, you even got a garden salad and slices of French bread. The moscato wine was soo good o had 2 glasses. Have been here for dinner several times We also go Tremont grill for lunch! Very good! Tasty! Met friends here for a Saturday night supper. Waiter was excellent. Owner friendly. It wasn't very busy & we were all spread out, which was nice. One bartender & our waiter wore masks. Our appetizers were great: pork egg rolls & a delicious sauce, baked Brie, & stuffed mushrooms. Mmmm... The salads were a nice portion & flavorful house dressing. My swordfish, a special, was nice sized & tasty. The mashed potatoes were good; the veggies were a bit soggy. Hubby's special, a surf & turf, was a 12 oz. ribeye & two shrimp. Same sides. This is a lovely restaurant in downtown Marshalltown. It is connected to the Tremont Inn but has its own entrance off of Main Street. When you walk in you will immediately feel the comfortable and warm ambiance. Low lighting and background music make it feel cozy and inviting. The menu is varied and has delicious entrees. Top it off with a slice of cheesecake and you will feel very satisfied. We live about an hour or so from Marshalltown but gladly make the drive to enjoy this wonderful restaurant and the friendly service. read more

We went there as a recommendation and because it seemed like a really nice looking restaurant, low lighting nice tables and steak. Since we were in the Midwest we figured it to be a good choice for a nice upscale dinner. Well... the service was okay at best. The steak was the worst! And we were paying top dollar for Marshalltown. We all ordered NY Strip cooked medium. Mine was medium well, the worst part was that it was maybe 1 inch thick and full of fat and loaded with grizzle. Not at all what we expected. It was extremely disappointing! Everyone knows a true well made NY Strip steak should be 2 inches thick and little to no grizzle. The steaks were 40 percent grizzle. I can say they had good flavor but that's it. The ambiance was not really as nice once you took a look around. Certainly not nice enough for a restaurant charging $40-$50 for steak. read more

The Tremont (TT) sounds to be a popular restaurant among a group of people in the town, and it may look good if I ignore my other experiences (even in this state). Otherwise, TT looks like a premium payment experience for a regular food and a very regular service. Instead of going to TT, I may recommend an 80-100 miles drive (round trip) to a restaurant in a nearby town. If difficult, maybe better to just stay home. I think this is the restaurant of a hotel. Supposedly these hotel-based restaurants are known for their high quality, highly fresh food (small portions are always expected at hotels and should not be an issue when you go to TT) as well as service in return of a premium payment. My experiences say that only that payment is the case here. The food quality was extremely regular at TT. There was a bar. I could see that those waitresses spent "extra" time at bar (talking to people that probably they knew from past). Maybe, by intention or not, they forgot/ignored other (unknown) customers eating dinner on the tables. I understand that it feels good to talk to people (that they know), but they should be aware that "tip" is not a given, it depends on the quality of their service. ... To keep it short and clear, for several times I asked myself to pay tip or not (I did pay, but could easily refuse). read more

I'm a loyal Hilton Honors member when I travel for business, except for when I stay in Marshalltown. I've stayed here three times and look forward to returning each time. The Tremont Inn is a beautiful and lovingly restored Inn located downtown. They also own the coffee/breakfast café and The Tremont restaurant. The owner, JP & Jennifer, are visible and will go out of your way to make sure you have everything you need. Their hospitality is unmatched. Each time I've eaten dinner at The Tremont, I've been pleasantly surprised by the offerings. Service here is always excellent too. For a small town like Marshalltown, they always exceed my expectations. I was surprised on this recent visit that they had a delicious French rose wine - a summer favorite. The café offers gluten-free toast, if requested. The rooms are well appointed, clean and comfortable. We all know that feeling of not being able to sleep in an unfamiliar place. This wasn't the case on my most recent trip. I slept like a hibernating bear in that bed. The kitchenette, off the hallway, is stocked with beverages and snacks. Robes are provided for making the short trek down the hall in the morning to make a cup or two of coffee or grabbing a yogurt. I really appreciate this amenity since I often work in the room upon waking and need my caffeine. One of the things I love about The Tremont Inn is that I can check-in and "check-out" of responsibility for awhile. I will always stay here when I'm in town. read more

This is the "fanciest" and most upscale restaurant in Marshalltown!! Ambience is great, old world charm with a very nice bar area. I had the porkchop, as I was told there 20 million pigs in Iowa and only 3 million people, so they did pigs right! Excellent choice, flavor was great, perfectly cooked and a nice size. Can't comment on the other dishes as everyone in our party (5) had the porkchop. Wine prices are unbelievable low. We had a couple of bottles of Bella Glos Las Alturas for $62.00; I pay $50 for it a total wine!!! Service was excellent; very attentive, knew the menu, and super friendly. I've been here several times. Probably the nicest restaurant in town, decor-wise. But, careful on the menu. I highly recommend calling in advance to make sure they have plenty of food in stock. On a recent visit, they were out of an appetizer, several entrees...and mashed potatoes. And the place was not that busy. I asked them: why not just drive to Hy-Vee and restock? I've had dinner a couple times over a couple years, and the service & food are exceptional. This last visit I started with a lobster bisque, very smooth and balanced flavor, a nice start to a meal. Provided with the meal is artisan bread, flavorful and serve with olive oil, balsamic vinegar & cracked pepper. The main dish was a special that night...a small portion of baked(?) fresh (never frozen) wild caught salmon that just melted in my mouth like whipped butter...it was heaven. Paired with that were two jumbo scallops seared and topped with a light sirracha berry Demi glaze plus a light house pilaf and lightly steamed fresh vegetables (pea pods, asparagus, mushroom) that retained the perfect crunch. Dessert was a salted caramel cake that provided a nice light end to the meal along with a splendid shot of espresso. I will continue to patronize them whenever I'm in town. read more

We have stayed at the Tremont for the last two years. It is on the second floor of a century old building and in its prior life was offices for a law firm. It is a rare find. The rooms are large and furnished in plush excess. JP and Jen own and operate and are attentive to your needs. It has two restaurants on the street level with a bar. It would be perfect except for one thing. It has no elevator. If steps do not bother you STAY THERE. read more

We ordered some appetizers and salads to eat over at The Fiddle and Whistle. The flatbread was lovely with the perfect amount of rosemary and the grapes are a lovely addition. The Brie was nicely heated, some rosemary would have been fabulous to flavor the Brie. Our two dinner salads (the apple and walnut) were nice and fresh, but quite small. We expected dinner sized salads, but as they were cheaper than the appetizers, perhaps they are meant to be side salads. Dinner salads and more vegetarian and ideally vegan options would be great additions. read more

I was in town for work and my team decided to go out for a nice meal. We went to the Tremont on Main. I ordered a filet with mashed potatoes and vegetable, the house salad, lobster bisque, and pork egg rolls for an appetizer. The app was really good. Lobster bisque had good flavor, but the consensus from the table was that it was not hot enough when it came out. I thought it tasted more like crab than lobster for some reason. The vegetable was 2 pieces of asparagus on top of some mushy mixed veggies... not amazing but not bad. My filet confused me. I ordered it medium rare. It came out in 2 pieces, not butterflied but cut in half. I'm not sure why that was done when I ordered it med rare. it was very juicy and tasted fine, but it was not med rare. I would call it med-well or well done. there was no pink. Like I said, it was still very tender which confused me- maybe they tenderized it a lot? Either way, it was confusing. Overall, we were satisfied with our meal here. Best place in Marshalltown for a nice dinner. read more

I've been staying here on and off for the past 2 years when I'm in town for business. This is one of those rare places that you will occasionally find during your travels. The Tremont is a small B&B type of motel that is housed in an early 1900's era building. Every room is exceptionally clean and spacious with most of the rooms overlooking Main Street. My husband and I visited family, and were delighted to find out about the Tremont Inn! Our 2nd floor spacious room, with high ceilings and windows overlooking historic Main Street, was somehow still cozy with our overstuffed chair, antique desk and complementary robes. Our decorative king bed, was comfy with luxury pillows. The hardwood hall, lined with original paintings led us to a butlers pantry and breakfast nook bathed in sunshine overlooking a rooftop garden. A well stocked fridge with beverages, beer, and the rest, and a historic safe stocked with books was a treat. We met family for breakfast downstairs at the Tremont Grill. Sunny, wide open, with a extensive tasty breakfast menu and specialty coffee's. The next night we had panko almond crusted Walleye next door at the Tremont restaurant. Wow! This weekend was certainly an unforgettable wonderful unexpected treat! We are looking forward to a repeat coming back from Virginia next summer! read more

Tremont on Main is fabulous! We stopped in, almost at closing time, and they could not have been any more welcoming. The server explained their evening specials, got our drinks, answered our questions, gave us the right amount of time to peruse the menu- all in a professional, friendly manner. The owner or manager stopped by and chatted for a few minutes. They made substitutions for my gluten free diet with no problem. Then the food arrived and it was excellent! We had a cold apple soup, baked Brie cheese with crustini and apple slices and their Combo Del Mar (mussels, shrimp, and scallops). We stopped in for lunch when on a business trip to Marshalltown. It was about 11:15 in the morning and only one other table had people there. By noon, the place was packed!! We were glad we got there early! They have a huge menu for lunch and a daily special. I got a grilled chicken salad which was yummy. The greens were so crisp and fresh. My coworker got a burger and fries which she said was very good! I think there was 6-7 different kinds of burgers. The server was prompt and helpful. A very pleasant lunch experience! read more

Visiting from out of town. Somebody recommended Tremont. Severely disappointed with food. Ordered mushrooms with cream cheese for appetizer, completely bland. I ordered steak medium well and it was more medium rare. It was covered with some sweet sauce which totally destroyed the taste. Dessert was even worse, it was some caramel cheesecake and was clearly bought from somewhere and frozen. I even chewed on some paper still attached to it. The only good thing was that the server was nice and friendly, but for this substandard food I was 60 bucks lighter when I left. read more

This place is an incredible find. I spent a week at the Tremont while working on a presidential campaign during the depths of an Iowa winter. I stayed in the hotel for 12 days and never saw another living soul, however the bed was very comfortable and the room was large and tastefully decorated. The main downside was that I had a do not disturb sign on my door which was repeatedly ignored and staff were no where to be found when you needed them. read more
