We eat here all the time. We luv Jesse! But tonight's dinner was awful. I ordered a stuffed spud with burnt ends. It came, and all it was was the spud, beer cheese and extremely fatty burnt ends. If I could give zero stars I would! First about me, part time chef, I took cooking classes, grew up with a mother that was a gourmet cook. Visited friends on April 7 & 8, 2026, went here. YUCK, is this FOOD?!?! I order a lot of French Dips, and I have had prime rib dips many times, but this, really?!?! This was absolutely the worst one I ever had in my 60 years of going out to eat and ordering at least a hundred dips! I bet they microwaved the meat to warm it because the meat was tough and had gristle, or they put on their grill with oil and made it tough but it also lost its flavor and just tasted like a round roast meat. Then they had to insult the sandwich by putting that awful, AWFUL artificial cheese that was ABSOLUTELY terrible on it!!!! Our friend got the dip also and my wife, but he pushed off as much of the 'cheese' he could, and didn't finish the dip sandwich. All three of us thought it was terrible!! If we weren't with our friends I would have sent it back after the first bite and got something else!!! As for the au juice for dipping, when the sandwich was dipped in you could not taste it, bland, no flavor, I finished the juice by drinking it straight and finally got a hint of flavor! I got the garlic red skin mashed potatoes for the side, there was so, much, garlic, it WAAAY over powered it, after only about two forks full, I really didn't want to finish, and burped it up for the next 4 hours, but I didn't want to make a scene in front of our friends in their home town!!! Now, how can you ruin a soft drink, big tall glasses, guessing about 20-22 ounces, FILLED with ice, the rest with soft drink, so really only got about 5-6 ounces of root beer. And yep, had to get another one to wash down the terrible food!! My wife had the onion rings for her side, onion rings from a bag from a supplier?? not even 'home made'?? for such a high priced food joint?? I guess by now people reading this will understand we will never be back!!! And now a completely different subject, a LOT of controversy today on tips etc. I tip well, but, when a restaurant puts how much you should tip like 18% is this, 20% is this amount etc etc on the bill, my server will get 10% and that's it! Remove the how much people should give for a tip from the bill, and my server would have gotten more. Of course that's my opinion, but tips are a thank you, people & restaurants, should NOT say how much should be expected to tip!! In our state they haven't started doing this, yet, at the restaurants we go to, if they do there will be a lot of disappointment for tips in our state. read more

The ribs and the brisket were dry. The ribs had very little taste. Because of the dryness and the lack of taste, I had to drown it in barbecue sauce. My wife and I were in the Marshalltown area this past Saturday and were looking for a restaurant where we could have dinner. We both love BBQ, and Smokin G's BBQ had great ratings on Yelp, so we headed over. I suppose there must be some legitimacy to the reviews, so I will give Smokin G's the benefit of the doubt. But, If this is the case, I think someone locked the recipes in the huge safe by the restrooms that night, and everyone forgot the combination. Let me state up front: I do my own smoking on several different types of smokers, I've actively competed in the past, and we are somewhat BBQ snobs. My wife ordered the Pick 2 with ribs and pulled pork. I ordered the Pick 2 with ribs and brisket. To start with the pulled pork. The pork was overcooked, extremely dry, and no tenderness was to be found anywhere in the general vicinity. Chewing the pulled pork became an aerobic exercise. Not to mention, flavor was nonexistent. The ribs were overcooked and very dry for both my wife and I. They, too, had little taste, the bark was tough, and to get to any tender meat, we both had to dig down through the bark to get close to the bone. The meat close to the bone did have a good bite through and didn't come falling off. My brisket was dry, overdone, and had no crust. I love good brisket, and this was far from that. In all of the meats, neither of us could detect much of a smoke flavor. On a positive note, the front-of-house staff were great. Our server, Detrice, was excellent and did her best to make the experience enjoyable. As I'm sure you can detect by now, the entire meal was very disappointing. To return to my opening statement, if this was an off-night, I blame kitchen management for allowing food of such low quality to exit the kitchen in anything other than the garbage can. read more

I have eaten BBQ at some of the most famous places in the country. From KC to Austin, and believe me when I say that Smoking Gs is a gem of a restaurant to have in a town this size. I love the flavor of their meats. Been going here for years and the service has only gotten better. There are some waitresses that are fantastic. You cannot go wrong by eating here on a date or a family gathering. Everything is good, but the real highlights for me is the smokestack, the pretzel, and the ribs. Great place in the downtown area, restaurant is pleasant decor with decent lighting and seating is good. Service has been excellent and the food well seasoned, smoked and presented on the plate. I opted for the 2 meat dinner pulled port and brisket and both were exceptional the brisket is thick sliced and has a great smoke ring. The pork os tender and pulled well, both meats cane un sauced, which allows me to slather on the sauce flavor as I like. Baked Beans come with some brisket mixed in, but the beans are a bit sweet. Both portions of meat were hefty and doubtful anyone would walk away hungry. The bar is small and seats 7, it looks like the wait staff runs the bar, not a set bartender. If I had one complaint it would be the corn muffin, to me is was a sticky, sweet muffin with little flavor of a corn muffin. It was the only disappointment with an otherwise stellar dinner. This place is amazing especially when the server comes out and tells you how many racks of ribs they have or briskets that they are cooking just to let you know that it might be a little while. I have been here multiple times and the service and the food has been freaking amazing!!!! For those of you that have read any of my reviews, I love my ham and cheese sandwiches and this was spectacular!!! Cheddar, American, Gouda, and Pam all I'm a buttery bun +2 sides. The coleslaw was out of this world, and the sidewinder fries are what you would expect for sidewinder fries but the ranch kicked ass. Not only was the food great here, but the price to portion ratio was very reasonable. I chose the pick three with the half smoked chicken, brisket, and the smoked bone-in pork chop. Everything was great including the appetizer we had of the nachos with sub of the sidewinder fries for the chips. The locals at our table said that the place is hit or miss, but on the day we went it was definitely a hit. Can't comment on any misses because I've only been there twice and the other time was many years ago. The sides were delicious. The beer was cold. Unfortunately, the meat seemed to be of very low quality. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich. The menu shows a nice sandwich with strips of brisket with a nice pink smoke ring to it. I got a sandwich with lots of gristle on it and didn't seem to be very close to brisket. Very disappointing, considering everything else seemed to have gone well. My server was very attentive, however, and the cheesy potatoes had a proper ratio of cheese/potato. My first visit to Smokin G's BBQ was for lunch while visiting the family in Iowa, and it was really impressive. The servings were large, and the prices very reasonable. Our table ordered the brisket sandwich, the pulled pork sandwich, and the BBQ Three Cheese Grill with pulled pork. The meats all tasted great, and the grilled cheese gave you three cheeses out of a selection of five or six kinds and a selection of a few different meats. The rattler sauce was my favorite of the sauces, similar to a Carolina mustard sauce but much better that any I've had to date. The sides were all tasty, with the sweet pepper cole slaw being my favorite. This is now a must-stop place each time we come to M'town. read more

Ordered take out on a Friday night and everything was ready in time. My husband had the full rack of ribs and he had plenty for lunch the filling day. The ride were juicy and tender. His sides were beans which were tasty and Mac & cheese which was rather bland. I had the beef brisket & pulled pork sandwich, both meats were juicy and tender with just the right amount of smoked flavor. My sides were the tasty baked beans and average mashed potatoes ( was supposed to be potato casserole but oh well). Our daughter wanted cornbread muffins and green beans, they forgot to pack the green beans. The cornbread was delicious. We also ordered carrot cake and the cake was really good.
