In town for some personal business and had time to kill so we decided to find a local place for lunch. Per my usual when it comes to deciding factors, the name drew us in to The Flying Elbow. Super cute place - simple. Very clean. Straightforward. The menu is on the wall, above the same counter where you order. Staff was helpful and friendly. My husband got a burger - The Patterson. The gentleman taking his order was kind enough to switch out the bread since my hubs isn't a fan of jalapeño. He recommended Texas toast, which the hubs was grateful for and he LOVED it. It was just the right amount of messy, juicy, and YUM. I got the all-beef hotdog with chili, cheese, and green onions. It was delicious. My only recommendation would be putting the cheese under the chili so that it melts (or run it under the broiler for a sec) and gets super gooey. Otherwise, the chili was awesome and tasted great with the dog. I'd definitely get it again. BUT, the kicker of the whole meal, the absolute "must go back" item was the tots. HO. LY. COW. We got one order to share and just figured we were getting regular old tator tots. But NO. The order was six tots that were each about the size of a ping pong ball and they were the MOST epic little flavor bombs. I know they had potato, cheese, and bacon in them ... not sure what else they add to create that little ball-o-flavor but MAN. If you're in the area, this place should be on your list of "must try." A little outside of my normal home base of the Des Moines metro, but Marshalltown is an easy drive... The short. The food is really good...! And it was worth the trip. See the pictures. Now to the long part. If you want to skip that feel free and just go on what is above this line. I grew up a wrestling fan back in the 70s and 80s... When the NWA used to do house shows and setup in high school gymnasiums. I remember the Attitude Era well (1997-2002) and watched it a lot at the time. I took my son to RAW and Smackdown shows at the Well when he was younger... Today I'm not an avid fan, but if I told you I didn't follow things at all...I'd be lying. I mean AJ Lee's epic return alongside her husband CM Punk...! C'mon! The Flying Elbow has been on my list a long time... As "a fan" I wanted to check it out soooo bad. And even though they were awarded Iowa's best burger in 2022... I wondered it was just another gimmick to draw people in to mid food... I don't put a lot of stock in contests. As you walk in the front door there is a small bar directly to your Left. Classic wrestling was playing on one of the TVs above the bar. Football on the other. You'll see a combination of low top tables and chairs and a few booths in front of you and to your Right. There's an Order Here sign at the end of the long counter. The fountain drink station is at the end of the room (Coke products). From the fountain drink station the entrance to the patio is to the Right. Restrooms to the Left. It's order and pay at the counter. Cash or card. It's seat yourself and they bring your food to you when it's done being prepared. Bus your own table when you're done. Staff was quick to clean up as people left to prepare for their next guest. I ordered the following: 24 oz fountain drink (free refills) 3:16 chili dog (all beef) with cheddar cheese and white onion -- Choose up to three toppings: Cheddar, pepper jack, and nacho cheese. Sour cream, nacho Doritos, and chili cheese Fritos. White, red, or green onions... Fried cheesecurds An order of six smoked bone-in chicken wings with buffalo sauce -- Sauce choices. Plain BBQ, buffalo, Korean BBQ, raspberry chipotle BBQ, People's BBQ. and Asian peanut A Bang! Bang! burger as advertised (no modifications) off the Attitude menu -- Pepper Jack, caramelized onion, cactus steak sauce, 4 Horsey sauce, fried jalapeño chips The burgers are smash style and have great flavor. I got the single burger and was wishing I'd gotten the double. Same with the 3:16 chili dog... They offer an Andre sized dog (+$2). But I'd ordered a lot of food...! The buns here! So good. The hamburger bun was a classic sesame seed bun that met the size of the burger. The meat peeked out the edges. The bun for the dog was a potato style...not a cheap flimsy bun. The bun seemed a little big for the regular dog, but I bet it would be perfect for something Andre sized. It held the chili well without falling apart. The smoked wings have a light smoke to them...not too heavy. They are big and meaty. The ranch that came with the cheesecurds was fire. I ordered some blue cheese with the wings. In hindsight I would say that one of the BBQ sauces would probably pair better with the smoked wings v. the buffalo. That's on me. I hit them right in a Saturday lunch rush and fortunately was able to grab a seat as someone else was getting up to leave. Staff was friendly and patient. If you're not patient...I'd probably not hit them right at peak lunch hour on a Saturday. Seating in the main dining area and on the patio was full. Service was great! The food was great! Is the wrestling thing kind of a gimmick? Yes. Yes it probably is. But it's a fun gimmick that hits home for a lot of us! I liked seeing the references that remind me of entertainment I grew up with and enjoyed. It's no different from a 50s diner theme, railroad, or zombies. And they back it up with good food! For me it's kind of like going to Prairie City for Goldie's or going up to Whatcha Smokin' in Luther... I spend a lot of money locally right here in the Des Moines metro, but sometimes it's a good thing to just hit the road and explore our neighbors a little. When we stopped by last week I didn't know until just before our order was served that there was a "Facebook Special" of sorts available called The King of the Ring Burger which features Korean BBQ and slaw...now the burgers we had were great but I knew I'd have to come back soon and try this one! Our server said that they could probably make one on our next visit if we asked for one. So...upon heading up to the counter to order I was very apprehensive about the chances. I ordered the Mrs All American Burger with bacon on Texas Toast and onion rings before asking the question if it was possible to get The King of the Ring as our server had suggested....the gal turned to look at the cook and asked if it would be possible to order a King of the Ring...one quick glance around his station to verify what he had he gave me the "thumbs up" sign and inside I was yelling "YES!!!!!". The burger did not disappoint as the Korean BBQ sauce and the coleslaw combination was as good as the match between the Macho Man and the Ultimate Warrior that was playing on the big screen from a years gone by Summer Slam.... Great service, great food, great atmosphere. I ordered the chili dog and sweet corn and my son ordered the crispy chicken wrap and fries. Everything was so good we did in and forgot to take pictures. I liked the root beer on tap and french fries the best. I'm pretty sure they are known more for their burgers and barbecue, but we weren't up for that today since we had burgers the day before. I'm pretty sure they're delicious since my mom and dad frequent this place. And it's a local hit. If you ever stop in Marshalltown, Iowa, make sure you eat here. read more

We walked in and this place is amazing! The wrestling decor was perfect, the inside was super clean and the atmosphere was fun. We were seated and walked up to order and Liz helped us and she knew the menu and made great recommendations. We got the Jabroni for a burger this is cheddar cheese, pineapple sweet corn relish, Cheddar Ruffles, sweet corn mayo, The People's BBQ sauce & green onion. We skipped the green onion. Well seasoned burger with amazing flavors. Bun held up nicely with all those ingredients. Now we love hot dogs and any item on the menu can be made into a burger or hotdog. For hotdogs we got the The Nature Boy which is Asian peanut sauce, pickled red cabbage, sweet chili Doritos, banana peppers! Omg this is one of my top two hotdogs ever. We also got the Punk, which is neon green relish, pickle spear, sport peppers, red onion, diced roma tomato, mustard & celery salt. This is basically a Chicago dog done perfectly which is my favorite hotdog! As a side we got the Mr. Mac'Man which Mac n' cheese, and flaming hot Cheetos on top of fries. I have been following this place on fb and have been wanting to try for quite some time- because I used to love professional wrestling and became the food and atmosphere looked awesome! I am never in the Marshalltown area but my daughter had a bball tournament and it just happened to end at 11am I noticed outside there's a cool patio that overlooks a creek. When you go inside, you order at the counter. There's a cool bar area with a good craft beer selection that you can send your tab to and pay there after ordering. I noticed a couple weeks ago there was a burger that caught my eye and the post read "*NEW* SPECIAL: KING OF THE RING BURGER / Havarti Cheese, Bacon, Coleslaw, Onion Rings & Korean BBQ. Available as single patty or double. Specials are while supplies last!" I knew I had to get this so of course I ordered the double, my daughter got the regular cheeseburger and we split these fried hash brown tot things with smoked ketchup. The king of the ring burger - I've never had a better burger. My daughter lover her burger and the fried hash brown things were good but I would recommend a different side. Finally made it here! Wow! What great burgers! We felt fortunate to get in at lunchtime & find a table. It's a small place. We started with cheese balls. They're good. Two of us had George the Animal. Mmmmmm...The burgers are fried crispy on the edge but juicy! They are pretty big! Friend's Jerry the King was tasty, too! All a bit messy, so grab napkins! The best burger in Iowa? Well, we had to make the drive to try it! While I wouldn't say it's the best, it's a solid choice. The burgers are smash burger style, and they offer a ton of fun options. I had the Bang Bang, and my boyfriend got the Tombstone. The Tombstone is pretty spicy, so be warned! There is a also a bar with a good selection of drinks. Seating is limited, so you may want to visit at an off time. Service is pretty quick though! I would definitely try again if I'm in the area! read more

Best part of our experience - there's a reason they won best burger patty in Iowa. My wife & I had the All-American burger, Piper's Pit burger (kind of like a Cuban sandwich on top of a wicked-good hamburger). Plus fries & mac/cheese sides. All delicious & not a morsel left! Fries were tasty and had a slightly crunchy texture to them. Atmosphere is clean and simple; outdoor covered deck is nice. Located on a street that has been upgraded by the City for a nice retail experience. The lady at the front who took our order was super nice. 2022 Iowa's Best Burger Award as a write in candidate.....wait that sit in for a minute. So not only were they not in the running, they weren't even in consideration until people started nominating them and won the whole thing!!! That's like the Indians from Major League, winning the World Series! Unheard of! Now onto the tasting. I ended up getting the American burger and I now understand why they have such a huge following. The burger was juicy, meaty, cheesy and just dripping with goodness!!! I did some research and found out that the meat patties are made of chuck, brisket, short rib and Wagyu beef. And holy cow does that flavor come through. (Pun intended ). I also got a side of fries which were also good and the ranch was amazing. Now the ordering process is a little different. You were from the counter and then try to find a seat in the small space in which it operates or, get it to go. The seats do turn over pretty quickly so don't be afraid to wait it out.
