Best ice cream in Newton. Rumor has it on Tuesdays they make a special dark chocolate ice cream that's apparently really good. All their ice cream is tasty and you can add flavorbursts as well. Family owned, friendly service. Walk up or drive through. They are closed for the winter but usually open up again around Spring break. They also have non-ice cream items like chicken tenders, cheese balls, corn nuggets etc etc. It may look small but they have a big menu! Check them out!

    Flavor blasted ice cream!

So the Cardinal corner has definitely changed over the years. The ice cream was cold and sweet as usual, but the service was not as pleasant. There was a big back who worried more about the inside temperature than making a damn ice cream and one of the other employees was so annoyed to do her job and did nothing but complain about the multiple orders, the customers, even moaned and groaned when the local FD decided to make a pit stop. Then this Pinocchio looking kid stopped making an ice cream just to have a stare down with another employee while they are still busy. Might go again but might have to call and ask who's working first.

I love this neighborhood, family friendly corner spot. It's a town staple. When I crave an ice cold treat, this place serves it the coldest. I like their flurries ans they do not skimp on the flavors/candy/toppings. I tend to get snickers and every bite is ice cold with a mouthful of snickers. Totally delicious and satisfying. They also have other great bites/snacks and lunch and dinner options. They have a drive thru and picnic tables to sit outside and enjoy your treats. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can score some farm fresh tomatoes and cucumbers.

First off, we tried to order 18 blizzards for three families but the black lady didn't even let us finish ordering and said "just pull up to the window." When we got to the window, the white lady was very annoyed with our order, constantly saying "oh my goddd!" and sighing very loudly. After they gave us 13 out of the 18 ice creams with no carriers or lids for the ice creams, the black lady closes the window and starts taking another order while we were still at the window, waiting for the rest of our order. After the lady takes the other order, she opens the window again so I ask for a receipt for the order since we didn't get all of our order. She continues to say no because she already took the order behind us and they can't go back to get the receipt. Mind you they only gave us 13 out of the 18 blizzards while charging us for all 18 and now they aren't letting us get the receipt to check if we got all of our blizzards that we paid for. Overall, very rude, very impatient, DO NOT GO HERE. UPDATE: We talked to them the next day and got a partial refund on our order. The guy we talked to was very nice and understanding.

Before we even finished our order they were telling us to go to the window. They charged us for 18 blizzards then only gave us 13. We asked for the receipt but they refused to give it to us. This than led to a screaming match because they overcharged us and didn't even give us all of our blizzards. They even cussed us out and slammed the window in our face. Not only all of this but they didn't give us any carriers or lids. We ended up leaving because they wouldn't give us WHAT WE PAID FOR. I get we had a big order but that is very bad costumer service. If you see someone working with blonde hair and missing teeth or a woman with dreads go the other direction because they with be super rude and not worth your time. I would not recommend this AT ALL and think they should get fired because they stole our money and are very bad people. Edit: we went the next day asking for some sort of refund. Apparently the people working last night didn't put any record of selling us anything. The person there said that he would look at the recordings to find out. I hope when he does he can see how rude they were. They called and gave us a partial refund. Everyone we talked to was really nice so I think it was only the two people last night. I will probably never go here again.

BUT it is the best burger I've ever had out of a gas station in Iowa...! Actually... I'm not exactly sure which way this place actually goes... Is this a gas station that sells food... Or a restaurant that sells gas? Potato...potatoe! Lol And it IS a very good burger overall too...! But not only do they serve burgers... They have other menu selections... Mostly all deep fried and grill options... And ice cream! I've seen signs for Iowa's Best Burger Cafe for years while running back and forth on I-80 from the Des Moines metro... Kellogg is about halfway between Newton and Grinnell. We've never stopped here until this past weekend when we were on our way home from the What Cheer IA flea market... Iowa's Best Burger Cafe is just off the highway... The first thing I noticed as the GPS said our route was about to end... It looked like it ended at an Amoco gas station... Huh? And then I noticed the signage for the Iowa's Best Burger Cafe on the building... Oh... So we're here...? Not exactly what I expected..., but I eat at food trucks too so it wasn't going to stop me. I did glance at my girlfriend to see if I could tell whether she was feeling it or not... I think she was just really hungry at that point and didn't really care. Lol There's ample parking. As you enter the building it kind of looks like a standard gas station convenience store...until you turn and look to your Right. Red plastic booth seating. There are two counters and a case that sit adjacent to one another. The counter you order at also displays the ice cream. There's a case displaying some ready to eat options. The register is on a shorter counter closest to the entrance. It's an open kitchen. There is also another small room of seating further to the left as you face the counters. The tables are kind of faux marble. Napkins, salt, pepper, ketchup, and mustard are available in each booth. We were greeted as we walked and I let them know it was our first time there and we didn't know the drill. They let us know you order standing there at the counter. Take a seat. They bring the food out to you when it's ready. You pay at the register when you are done. Cash or card...and there is an ATM on site. They bus your table. There are a couple of menu placards on the counter where you place your order... The 16 flavors of ice cream selection are plainly labeled. The two ladies behind the counter were very helpful and were both personable! We ordered: 2x half pound burger combos (one with cheese, bacon, onions and pickles and one with cheese, onions, pickles, mayo, and lettuce) 1x upgraded side to garlic mushrooms 1x upgraded side to onion rings 2x fountain drinks (Coke products...comes with combo) 1x mozarella sticks 1x two scoop bowl of ice cream 1x single cone of ice cream The wait for food wasn't long. Everything was served hot and fresh! They'd asked us if we wanted ranch... My girlfriend always wants ranch! Not only did they bring us ranch... They brought us a HUGE squeeze bottle of ranch! This is how every restaurant should bring you ranch! While we dined in (as did a couple of other customers) most of the business appeared to be take out. One pro tip... The standard half pound burger comes with two patties. I heard a customer ask a guy, at the booth next to her, how many patties he had on his burger... Huh? He had four patties on his burger... A full pounder! So there has to be a way to add an additonal patty (or patties) too... If you want a bigger burger... Ask...! The bathrooms...not horrible. The food was all great. Good service. No complaints. I wouldn't hesitate to stop in here again! And I know what to expect next time...!

As I circled around the block I could see that people's vehicles were not just parked in the lot and across the street. They had also parked all the way down the street and around the corner. I recognized the name as a place to get ice cream, and it was a warm day so I decided to stop. They have a drive-thru, a walk-up window, an indoor soda fountain-type seating area, and overflow seating in a large, attached room. I ordered an M&M Twister, which is their version of the DQ Blizzard. It was just as good any other ice cream I've had. I noticed they also serve regular food, and there were people calling in for pickup orders while I waited for my Twister. I would point out that although there were people all around, I was only second in line at the walk-up window. It only took a couple of minutes to get my order, and the 12 ounce "small" Twister I ordered was only $5.00 plus tax. I know I've paid more for less at other ice cream shops. I'll definitely stop in the next time I'm in the area. MaybeI'll try the food there, too. It sure smelled good.

Sandy at the counter was kind to her Golide's rookies and gave us superb recommendations throughout. It was busy but not chaotic. They enjoy a lot of take-out orders, too. I loved my delicious pork tenderloin sandwich, which included crinkle-cut fries. The onions, pickles, and ketchup made it even better! I dipped my fries in their ranch sauce. I enjoyed my partner's potato salad, and her tenderloin strips were darn good. We were full and couldn't enjoy their ice cream, but we checked out their Flavors of the Week for the Spring and will undoubtedly return.

Per my usual when it comes to deciding factors, the name drew us in to The Flying Elbow. Super cute place - simple. Very clean. Straightforward. The menu is on the wall, above the same counter where you order. Staff was helpful and friendly. My husband got a burger - The Patterson. The gentleman taking his order was kind enough to switch out the bread since my hubs isn't a fan of jalapeño. He recommended Texas toast, which the hubs was grateful for and he LOVED it. It was just the right amount of messy, juicy, and YUM. I got the all-beef hotdog with chili, cheese, and green onions. It was delicious. My only recommendation would be putting the cheese under the chili so that it melts (or run it under the broiler for a sec) and gets super gooey. Otherwise, the chili was awesome and tasted great with the dog. I'd definitely get it again. BUT, the kicker of the whole meal, the absolute "must go back" item was the tots. HO. LY. COW. We got one order to share and just figured we were getting regular old tator tots. But NO. The order was six tots that were each about the size of a ping pong ball and they were the MOST epic little flavor bombs. I know they had potato, cheese, and bacon in them ... not sure what else they add to create that little ball-o-flavor but MAN. If you're in the area, this place should be on your list of "must try." If you're not, those tots are worth the trip.
