After being out for a hike at one of the parks nearby, I needed to find a place to replenish my energy and took to Yelp to find a diner or something similar to get the job done. Sunrise Cafe immediately piqued my interest, and it was all I hoped for. The sign on the wall when I walked in stated "if you leave here hungry, it's your own fault" and based on my experience that's 100% true. I ordered the meat lovers skillet and the skillet was absolutely overflowing with hash brown, egg, and meaty deliciousness! If I'm in the area again, I know where I'll stop. read more

Today was my 4th or so time here and it just never disappoints!! The Good: Wonderful service, heaping portions that taste absolutely fantastic, clean restrooms, and prices like the time stood still 20 years ago!!! The Bad: None. LOL... The Ugly Truth: Everytime we're within an hours drive we have to stop here for a delicious meal and make sure to support a small local business that depends on its customers to return, which we will gladly continue do. Our food, and we have tried several meals, is always cooked just right and in case something doesn't seem 100% perfect they are happy to make it right any way they can to be sure to continue to earn your business. I hadn't been to the Sunrise for a while. I'm glad we stopped back in. Fried potatoes is the one thing that sets this place apart from others. I remember my Mother frying up sliced potatoes in an old cast iron skillet. Oh so good and they had that crispy crust on the outside. We'll the potatoes at Sunrise are as close as you can get to that old home made delicacy. I'l bet you'll be taking home what you can't eat. They give you so many potatoes that they alone fill the plate. Oh I should mention the American fries aren't the only potatoes there as the hash-browns are equally as good. The rest of the food there is also good. It is your typical small town cafe food. But what sets it apart from most small town cafe's are the portions. This cafe is a a great find right off of Highway 30! We pulled in on a Thursday evening to find the place busy and quite full of customers. We were seated and provided our menus right away. The menu is HUGE and it's even more difficult to choose what to order when you see that breakfast is served all day. There were several specials posted on the board on the wall. We both chose our dinners and got the cup of soup right away. Then the main meals came and they were HUGE! I had the meatloaf dinner with has browns. It also came with a small bowl of cooked carrots (cooked perfectly!) and a dinner roll. I asked for gravy on my hash browns and they came through for me! I had 3 huge slices of meat loaf and a very large portion of hash browns. My boyfriend ordered the Chicken Parmesan pasta dish. Another huge plate. The pasta sauce was incredible - it had a little sweetness to it and I couldn't get enough of it. The only thing that he didn't care for was the large amount of melted cheese on top, but he could easily work around that. His meal also came with garlic bread. To top things off, we also got dessert with our meals. We could choose from rice pudding, tapioca pudding, ice cream, or jello. These serving sizes were the perfect sweet finish to the meal. The most incredible thing? We both ate for less than $20 total. If we lived closer, we would be taking advantage of this place all of the time - so many plates came out of the kitchen that had our mouths watering. Rolling through the area and stopped for lunch (before heading to Gladbrook to visit Matchstick Marvels). Food was plentiful! All 4 of us took 1/2 home with us. Hot roast beef lunch was enough for 3!!! Three of us got sandwiches and substituted soup for fries. We could have all 3 spilt order. Service was excellent and served quick and hot! read more

Food was terrible! I got the seafood platter. the fish tasted like a mix of swamp water and bleach. I took one bite and had to spit it out. The shrimp wa overcooked and hard. The waitress was nice n offered something else to which I declined. She stated that the breakfast food was much better. Nice friendly people here. The food was really good but they give you WAY too much. I ordered a meatloaf dinner. It came with 3 large slices, mashed potatoes, peas, a cup of soup, and a soda all for $10. I guess it includes desert also but i couldnt make it half way through so I decided to skip that portion. I am one happy hurtin unit. This is a must stop if in the area. If there is anything to complain about it is in bad need of a remodel or update and a deep cleaning. read more

Was recommended this place from a co-worker and went on a Friday night with my boyfriend as our usual weekend date night, we drove all the way here from Van Horne which is about a 30 minute drive, but let me tell you, it was worth it. The pictures on Yelp do not do the food justice. It was busy when we went but we were seated pretty fast. Our waitress was an absolute sweetheart and service was prompt. We waited for about 20 minutes or so for our food but considering how busy they were it wasn't an issue for us. The food was amazing, nothing to complain about. Portions are true to reputation, HUGE but absolutely delicious AND CHEAP. I was able to finish my meal (not without some struggles lol) but my boyfriend actually had to take the last bit of his home. We were both really happy with the food, hes a really picky eater so it's definitely a pass if he even eats it let alone wants to take it home after! This would be our go-to every date night spot if it wasn't as far as it was, but for now it's definitely on our list of our favorite places. Only thing good about this place is the American potatoes. Service from the Owner is horrible. Was looking for our waitress seen her bussing tables and I said can I get another soda. And she walks Over and grabs my cup and walks off. Said no thank you or please? She walked off before I could even say anything. She walks back and slams my cup down. And our waitress tell her thank you and Nebbie or what ever her name is said "Atleast someone said it" I explain to my waitress what happen, she apologizes for her behavior. I ask her who the supervisor is and she said that she was the owner. I was shocked for the owner to be treating customers like that. I ordered a French toast that was cold. I asked them to heat up in microwave because we did wait almost an hour for our food. Our corn beef has was burnt completely on one side and not even cooked on the other side. We are from out of town so we took a chance on this place. Outward and inward appearance the building doesn't look like anything special. But the food in this restaurant, run by a Mesopotamian family, is great! I never order spaghetti, so I'm not sure what inspired me to do so. They brought me a warm skillet brimming with a hearty, tomato sauce, a satisfying sprinkle of meat, enveloping thick swirling spaghetti pasta. Gooey cheese heaped on top. Side of garlic bread and salad. Cold Diet Pepsi completed the delicious meal. The only complaint I have is that they don't live closer to where my wife and I live. read more

wow! you gotta try this place. private parking lot. off the beaten path but worth a stop. breakfast served all day. we ordered the 2/2/2 which was 2 bacon, 2 pancakes and 2 eggs. the pancakes were about 12" in diameter. bigger than the plate. we also ordered the full biscuits and gravy and it was huge and they do not skimp on the gravy. $13 for all of that. you simply don't get this anywhere else. fantastic. love it and we will be back. service was great. quiet and full of locals and non locals who keep coming back. 6 motorcyclists stopped by and their table was reserved which means they must eat there a lot. can't say enough good things about this place. try it, love it, return! read more

First of all. let me start off by saying that I hear outstanding reviews of this place all of the time. I will definitely go back and give it another try. However this meal tonight was very disappointing . I was at my daughters and the subject of meatloaf came up. Since meatloaf is my favorite meal ever I decided to stop there on my way home. Yea they have meatloaf. I ordered it without the gravy on top. I chose a salad and mashed potatoes to go with it. Salad comes out right away drenched in dressing. I have never known a restaurant to put dressing on the salad. Anywhere else it comes on the side. Result was able to eat about a 1/3 of the salad. Now here comes the main meal. The meatloaf had 3 huge slabs on the plate.They don't skip on portions that's for sure. So meatloaf looks very dry so I take a bite. Took another to give it another chance. Worst meatloaf I have ever had. That is including a time or two when I make it myself and it doesn't come out right. Potatoes gravy and veggies were good. Come to think of it I think I was supposed to get a roll also. Did not. Waitress never came back to ask how everything was or I would of spoke up about it. instead I she gave me a to go box so I brought the meat home. Asked my son I he wanted it. He tried it and threw the rest to the dog. I am sure there are a lot of people that like the meatloaf there. I just know that I will never make the mistake again. My husband and I have eaten at the sunrise cafe many times and each time was better than the last, until this time. I went there with some friends and ordered the hot beef. About half way through eating, I found a piece of plastic, like saran wrap in it. Yes I did have witnesses. I waved at the waitress and she told me they wrap the beef in it and asked me if I wanted another one with no apology. I declined. She later brought me the check in full. When I went up to pay, I asked the other gal if they charge extra for the plastic and she again told me they wrap the beef up in it, and when I told her I almost ate it, she told me "it happens", and "it's no big deal". Again no apology. I told her I don't care to eat plastic, she smirked and said she could give me 10% off my bill. That was about .97. I told her if you go somewhere else and that happens, they would give you a bigger discount than that. Originally I wasn't looking for a free meal. I just didn't think I should have to pay for a meal that had plastic in in. I didn't finish eating. The 2 sisters started talking in Greece or whatever and never did I get an apology from either one.
